As fallout from a massive fight at Fresno High continues, a 16-year-old has started a student led organization called "United Safety Protect" to create communication and accountability with administration. David Beckham, a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2005, gave control of his 71.6m Instagram followers to a neonatal doctor in Ukraine's second largest city so that she may share firsthand experiences of her and her staff trying to save babies during the Russian invasion. My guest today is Priyanka Chopra Jonas – arguably one of the most famous people on the planet. She’s a household name in India, a country fast approaching a population of 1.5 billion and not only has she climbed to the submits of the Indian film industry, she is now doing the same in Hollywood. She became Miss World, all the way back in 2000 and since then has developed a bit of a reputation for continually breaking through glass ceilings. She has become the first South Asian lead on a major US TV network show and she’s also a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. Her resume is long and varied – not only is she an actor, she is also a singer, an entrepreneur, a producer, an activist and now, she is also an author.During the downtime afforded to her because of the global pandemic and travel restrictions, she decided to write her very first book, Unfinished: A Memoir. I spoke to her right in the middle of her launching this book in four different time zones and despite the exhausting schedule, she remained resolutely upbeat. Priyanka and I really connected during this conversation and we went deep into many different areas. We talk about where her drive and positivity comes from, how she defines success and the powerful effect her childhood has had on the choices she makes and the way she interacts with the world. From a young age, Priyanka was taught to walk her own path and that her opinions were valid and important – something she encourages all parents to foster in their own children. She was also taught that finding the good in any situation takes away the power of the bad. This came into question when, like myself, Priyanka suffered the loss of her father in 2013. The name “Ani Choying” symbolizes charity, humility and empathy. She is a Nepalese Buddhist nun and musician, internationally renowned for bringing many Tibetan Buddhist chants and feast songs to mainstream audiences. Her musical career began in 1994 when U.S. guitarist Steve Tibbetts during a visit to Nepal met Ani Choying and listened to her chanting. He was immediately impressed with her singing talents and eventually managed to record it on a cassette recorder in a small shrine room. The result was a collaborative album Cho, which was released in 1997. Ani Choying has been involved in several humanitarian works. She has been recently appointed as the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador to Nepal. 2019.10.23 Ishmael Beah was recruited as a child soldier to fight in the Sierra Leone Civil War when he was thirteen years old. This talk explores how he survived the brutality of the war to become the renowned author of A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier and UNICEF’s First Advocate for Children Affected by War in 2007. Advertising today  spends a lot of time telling you what you deserve even though you haven’t  done anything to earn it.   I remember some friends who were a few years younger than my wife and  myself who spent all their time saying if someone would give them a  chance like we got life would be great.   First of all, the chances we got happened at the point that we earned  them. When we bought a house, it was because we had waited long enough  and our finances were in order to do it.    When they reached a similar age and financial status, they bought a house  too. Then it all went south. He got fired from a couple of great jobs,  then they divorced and everything went to pot.   What was so different about the two situations? One thing is that we  never felt we were owed anything. It never occurred to us that we would  or should be given a chance. We made our own, and to this day continue to  do what it takes to maintain what we have earned.   This is not to “toot our own horns” so to speak, but it seems that most  of our society believes they are owed more than they ever have the  intention to earn.   Ginger Rogers   “The only way to enjoy anything in this life is to earn it first.”   Have you earned what you have? Or are you just sitting hoping someone  will give you a handout? I remember hearing stories about the Great  Depression in the 1930’s where farmers committed suicide when faced with  taking a handout from the government. Have you believed  the advertising hype that says you are owed a living? Although contributing to the  organisation since 1954, she worked in some of the most profoundly  disadvantaged communities of Africa, South America and Asia between 1988  and 1992. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in  recognition of her work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in December 1992.    A month later, Hepburn died of appendiceal cancer at her home in  Switzerland at the age of 63.   What an amazing contribution to make for good in this world. When most  with her fame and success simply live the good life, she devoted herself  to helping those whose circumstances made it impossible for them to help  themselves.   While there are few who are as noble as that, there are many things we  can do to help others around us as we travel through this life. Our best  is to help others learn to be self sufficient so that when no one is  around to help, they can learn to live on their own. Don’t simply give  someone a fish, TEACH them to fish. Then you have fed them for a  lifetime.   One organization that fulfills this mission is the Project Self Sufficiency Foundation.
