When dictatorial leaders use talk of peace as a smokescreen to conceal their plans for war and destruction, what are the people to do? Believe in a vision of peace and freedom that is muscular, sturdy, and protective — and pray that it holds, as Ernesto Cardenal does in his poem “Give Ear to My Words (Psalm 5),” translated by Jonathan Cohen.Ernesto Cardenal (1925–2020) was a Catholic priest and poet who was born in Nicaragua. From 1979 to 1988, he served as the Minister of Culture there. Cardenal was the author of several volumes of poetry, including Pluriverse, Zero Hour, Apocalypse, and In Cuba.Jonathan Cohen is an award-winning translator of Latin American poetry and a scholar of inter-American literature. He has translated Ernesto Cardenal, Enrique Lihn, Pedro Mir, and Roque Dalton, among others, and his own poems and essays have been widely published. He is the author of pioneering critical works on Pablo Neruda and Muna Lee.Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.We're pleased to offer Jonathan Cohen's translation of Ernesto Cardenal's poem and invite you to subscribe to Pádraig's weekly Poetry Unbound Substack newsletter, read the Poetry Unbound book, or listen to past episodes of the podcast. Job has lost everything but his wife, his life, and a handful of friends who have gathered around him. After sitting together in silence for seven days, Job opens up about the sorrow and agony he feels. His friends, however, greet him with calls to repent, suggesting that God would not punish someone like this if he were indeed righteous. Bildad rebukes Job, pointing to God's justice and argues that God does not reject a person of integrity. Job, in turn, considers God's power and sovereignty and declares that it is futile to try to bring any case against God Almighty. Job 6 - 1:02 . Job 7 - 4:54 . Job 8 - 8:13 . Job 9 - 11:48 . Today we get to see the Lord's faithfulness to a sinful man who doubts, who wavers, who makes poor decisions, but who ultimately responds to the Lord's instruction. It would be hard to argue that the Lord chose Abram because of his upstanding moral qualities, however, as his flaws aren't covered up or diminished. Instead, in God's own kindness, He makes promises to Abram, promises that will last from one generation to the next, on and on through the ages. The Lord makes these promises, not because Abram deserves it or because His holy hands would be tied without Abram's cooperate; instead, through his work in Abram's life God will show the world his steadfast love and sovereign provision.Genesis 14 – 1:17 . Cancelled. It's easy to think of this as a 21st century phenomenon, but three millennia ago, David is deeply concerned about reputational damage. These songs speak of the king's desire for peace, his distress and his need for healing, but most of all they demonstrate his deep need for - and love of God.What's more, these psalms demonstrate remarkable humility for a proven military conqueror and one of the most powerful kings in the ancient Near East.Written and produced by Chas BayfieldMusic by Michael Auld and Jon Hawkins MusicCover art by Lisa Goff

Welcome to Day 2410 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Wisdom Nuggets – Psalm 5:7-12 Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2410 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2410 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. In today's Wisdom Nugget, I will guide you through the vast landscapes of biblical wisdom. Today, we're delving into Psalm 5:7-12 from the New Living Translation. In this part of the Psalm, David continues his prayer, focusing on God's steadfast love, guidance, protection, and justice. Let's walk through these verses together and uncover the rich insights they offer. Psalm 5:7-12 (NLT): 7 Because of your unfailing love, I can enter your house; I will worship at your Temple with deepest awe. 8 Lead me in the right path, O Lord, or my enemies will conquer me. Make your way plain for me to follow. 9 My enemies cannot speak a truthful word. Their deepest desire is to destroy others. Their talk is foul, like the stench from an open grave. Their tongues are filled with flattery. 10 O God, declare them guilty. Let them be caught in their own traps. Drive them away because of their many sins, for they have rebelled against you. 11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them sing joyful praises forever. Spread your protection over them, that all who love your name may be filled with joy. 12 For you bless the godly, O Lord; you surround them with your shield of love. Worship and Awe: David begins this segment of the Psalm with a profound acknowledgment of God's unfailing love: “Because of your unfailing love, I can enter your house; I will worship at your Temple with deepest awe” (verse 7). This verse highlights David's awareness that it is only through God's steadfast love that he can come into His presence and worship. David's response to God's love is one of reverence and awe. Worship, for David, is not a casual act but one filled with deep respect and amazement at God's goodness and grace. This teaches us that our worship should stem from understanding God's unfailing love for us. Recognizing His grace and mercy should fill us with awe and gratitude, prompting us to approach Him with a heart full of reverence. In our own lives, it's important to remember that worship is a response to God's love. When we gather to worship, whether in a church setting or our personal devotions, we should do so with a heart that is deeply aware of His love and grace. This awareness transforms our worship from a routine activity into a profound encounter with the divine. Seeking Guidance: David continues in verse 8 with a plea for guidance: “Lead me in the right path, O Lord, or my enemies will conquer me. Make your way plain for me to follow.” This request underscores David's dependence on God for direction and protection. He acknowledges the presence of his enemies and recognizes that without God's guidance, he is vulnerable to their attacks. This verse highlights the importance of seeking God's guidance in our daily lives. Just as David needed God's direction to navigate the threats he faced, we, too, need God's wisdom...
Welcome to Day 2408 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Wisdom Nuggets – Psalm 5:1-6 Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2408 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2408 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. In today's Wisdom Nugget, I will guide you through the vast landscapes of biblical wisdom. Today, we're delving into Psalm 5:1-6 from the New Living Translation. This Psalm, written by David, is a poignant prayer for guidance, protection, and justice. So, let's journey together through these verses and uncover the profound truths they hold for us today. Psalm 5:1-6 (NLT): 1 O Lord, hear me as I pray; pay attention to my groaning. 2 Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for I pray to no one but you. 3 Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord. Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly. 4 O God, you take no pleasure in wickedness; you cannot tolerate the sins of the wicked. 5 Therefore, the proud may not stand in your presence, for you hate all who do evil. 6 You will destroy those who tell lies. The Lord detests murderers and deceivers. A Cry for Attention: David begins this Psalm with a heartfelt plea: “O Lord, hear me as I pray; pay attention to my groaning. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for I pray to no one but you” (verses 1-2). These opening verses are rich with emotion and desperation. David is not just speaking words; he is groaning, crying out from the depths of his soul. His appeal to God as “my King and my God” reflects a deep, personal relationship and acknowledges God's sovereign authority over his life. In our own lives, there are moments when we feel overwhelmed, and our prayers become more than words—they become cries for help. David's approach teaches us to bring our deepest emotions and needs before God, recognizing His sovereignty and His readiness to listen. This encourages us to be honest and vulnerable in our prayers, knowing God is attentive to our cries. Consistency in Prayer: Verse 3 reveals David's commitment to regular prayer: “Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord. Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly.” David makes it a habit to seek God every morning, starting his day with prayer and bringing his requests before the Lord. This verse highlights the importance of consistency in our prayer life. Starting our day with prayer sets the tone for the rest of the day. It aligns our hearts and minds with God's will and reminds us of our dependence on Him. David prays and waits expectantly, demonstrating his faith that God will respond. This serves as a reminder to develop a regular prayer routine. By beginning each day with prayer, we acknowledge God's presence and invite Him to guide us through the challenges and opportunities ahead. Waiting expectantly shows our trust in God's timing and His answers to our prayers. God's Stance on Wickedness: David transitions in verses 4 and 5 to reflect on God's nature: “O God, you take no pleasure in wickedness; you cannot tolerate the sins of the wicked. Therefore, the proud may not stand...
