Scripture: David's Psalms. This is the final teaching in the “David…and the Heart of God” series. We will explore David's Psalms today. In 2 Samuel 23:1 we read that David is described as the sweet psalmist of Israel. David's psalms have influence and spoke to the hearts of people for millennia. C.S. Lewis said, “The most valuable thing the psalms do for me is to express that small delight in God which made David dance.” And Billy Graham said, “I used to read five psalms every day - that teaches me how to get along with God. Then I read a chapter of Proverbs every day and that teaches me how to get along with my fellow man.” 75 of the 150 Psalms were written by David. Some themes in David's Psalms with a few examples: Praise - Psalm 95:1-2, Psalm 57:9-11, Psalm 103:1-3. We are encouraged to begin everything with praise, it honors God and brings refreshment to our souls. Praise takes our eyes off ourselves and putts them on God. True meaning for life is found only in God our Savior. David teaches us to praise the Lord from the heart even when we feel like we're at the bottom of the pit, because God heals and His name is to be praised. Penitence - Psalm 32:1-2 & 5, Psalm 139:23-24, Psalm 51:1-2. David's psalms help us recognize we are spiritually poor and needy and we are to be humble before God because we are all sinners. David shows us words of confession for transgression because we can be confident that through faith in Christ, God forgives. Our sins are paid for through Jesus' sacrificial death. The Lord is merciful, He washes away our sin. Presence - Psalm 32:7, Psalm 145:18. God is near, He is present, we cannot flee from Him. His presence gives hope and healing. He is near to all who call Him. He is unfailingly present in our lives. Prayer - Psalm 25:4-5, Psalm 141, 2-4. Psalms are used for prayer, and are a good way to begin our day. They guide us in how to pray honestly before God and we see that through David's prayerful words we can draw near to the Lord. David's Psalms are filled with words asking the Lord for guidance, direction, strength against sin, power for the spiritual battle, and prayers seeking God and His face. Protection - Psalm:1 & 3, Psalm 18:1-2, Psalm 55:18 7 22. The Lord is our Protector and the One who defends us and we are to call upon Him. He is the Stronghold of our lives. God is our Rock, Shield, our Strength, our place of Refuge, our Fortress, our Deliverer. The Lord sustains us and He cares for us. Prophecy - Psalm 110:1, Psalm 22:1 & 16018 & 29-31. David spoke much prophecy about the coming Messiah. David shared prophetic words even about the day that Jesus would be on the cross a thousand years before Jesus' death. David understood prophetically the love of Jesus who would say, “It is finished.” And through prophetic understanding David saw the finished work of Christ. Pastor ends by encouraging us to read through David's Psalms this week: 2-9, 11-32, 34-41, 51-65, 68-70, 86, 95, 101, 103, 108-110, 122, 124, 131, 133, 138-145 Now What? There are countless sources of distress in our lives. External tragedies and brokenness that threaten our sense of well-being along with our inner sins that take away our peace. But we are not ones who face these things alone or without hope. We have a God we can turn to in our distress, a God who hears us and who comforts us as nothing and no one else can. In this psalm, David cries out to God in his distress. “His holy trust, his many conflicts, his great transgressions, his bitter repentance, and his deep distresses are all here;” comments Charles Spurgeon. In addition to being another acrostic psalm (with each line representing a letter from the Hebrew alphabet) this psalm contains a rhythm of movement between prayer and meditation on God's character. - Prayer – Psalm 25:1-7 - Meditation – Psalm 25:8-10 - Prayer – Psalm 25:11 - Meditation – Psalm 25:12-15 - Prayer Psalm 25:16-22This is a pattern we can copy to bring comfort and restored hope in the midst of our crying out to God in our distress. Prepare for this weeks teaching by reading Psalm 25.

Series: Living By Faith: Daily Spiritual Rhythms Title: Daily Prayer Passage: Psalm 86:1-13 Date: 6.15.25 Message By: David Adams
David's life story was shaped by conflict. He was a wartime king and answered a warrior calling from the days of his youth. For this reason, in fact, David was not permitted to build the house of God (I Chron 22:8). David was a conqueror, his son Solomon would be a builder. Their respective callings would present unique challenges. For David, the incessant threat of Israel's enemies drove him time and again to prayer. Psalm 140 is a classic example. Both David and Solomon prefigure messianic glory of their future son's exploits. The one to whom David prays for deliverance will send His only Son to ultimately fulfill the calling given to Jeremiah (1:10) “See I have set you this day over nations, and over kingdoms, to pluck up, and to break down, to destroy, and to overthrow, to build, and to plant.” In the meantime David beseeches the Lord.

Psalm 138 is the first of 8 songs written by David which appear as a set in the closing chapters of the Psalter. These Davidic psalms are followed by the final collection of S songs which all begin and end with the refrain: "Praise the lord!". These closing medleys swerve to reprise two central themes of the entire book - prayer, and praise. David's songs are structured according to the former followed by the crescendo psalms emphasizing the latter. It seems appropriate that this greatest of song books would culminate with a universal call to worship and 8 songs penned as examples by Israel's greatest king.

The content of our worship is regulated by God himself through the Scriptures, and is expressed in we call the “ordinary means of grace” – word, prayer, and sacrament. Worship – public, personal, and household – is saturated by prayer because prayer is a means of God's grace and connected to promises of God's presence, provision, and power for his people.

Send us a textIn the summer of 2023, Sappir Cohen, a young woman from Ramat Gan, felt an overwhelming sense of foreboding. Despite countless visits to doctors, she found no explanation for her anxiety. In desperation, she turned to prayer, reciting Psalm 27 daily. Months later, she was abducted by terrorists during the October 7th attacks in Israel. Miraculously, her prayer became her source of strength and resilience throughout her 55-day captivity in Gaza. Her experience serves as a reminder of the power of trust in G-d, especially during times of fear and uncertainty. The Psalm she recited isn't just for her—it is for all of us, as we too are hostages, seeking to break free from the shackles of our material world and reconnect with the Divine.Takeaways:Power of Prayer: Psalm 27 gave Sappir the courage and hope she needed in unimaginable circumstances. Our prayers can uplift us in our darkest moments.Unity and Strength: Even in the midst of her captivity, Sappir's story demonstrates how the unity of the Jewish people is a source of strength, as recognized by her captors.Spiritual Hostages: We are all, in a way, hostages in this material world. Our soul's yearning for G-d is fulfilled through mitzvot and spiritual growth.Overcoming the Yetzer Hara: The battle against our inner enemies—the distractions of material life—is constant. Trust in G-d and spiritual resilience can help us overcome it.Hope in G-d: The message of Psalm 27 encourages us to maintain unwavering faith, knowing that G-d will guide and protect us in times of need.Support the showGot your own question for Rabbi Bernath?
