Slovenija se stara hitro – in tega trenda ne bo mogoče ustaviti. Že skoraj pred 10imi leti je številčnost starostnikov 65+ preseglo število naše najmlajše populacije, stare do 18 let. Do sredine stoletja bo skoraj vsak tretji prebivalec Unije starejši od 65 let. Število starejših od 80 let pa se bo v tem času skoraj podvojilo. Hkrati bodo naraščali stroški pokojnin, zdravstva in dolgotrajne oskrbe, največji pritisk pri nas je pričakovati okoli leta 2060. Urška Valjavec se je o posledicah demografije pogovarjala z dr. En este episodio nos adentramos en una de las estructuras más fascinantes y peor simplificadas del sistema nervioso: el tálamo. Durante años se nos ha enseñado como una gran “estación de relevo sensitiva”, pero esa metáfora se queda corta. El tálamo no solo transmite información hacia la corteza: la filtra, la organiza, la modula y participa en el estado funcional en el que esa información llega al cerebro consciente. A lo largo del episodio recorremos su historia, su lugar dentro del diencéfalo, sus principales núcleos y su papel en sensibilidad, visión, audición, movimiento, memoria, atención, cognición y conciencia. Pero el episodio no se queda en la anatomía clásica. Entramos también en la neurofisiología moderna del tálamo: entradas drivers y modulators, núcleos de primer orden y de orden superior, bucles cortico-tálamo-corticales, modos de disparo tónico y en ráfaga. Finalmente, aterrizamos todo en clínica: ictus talámicos, dolor central, afasia talámica, negligencia, alteraciones cognitivas, trastornos del movimiento, arteria de Percheron, mesocircuito de Schiff y la idea central del episodio: el tálamo enferma como nodo, no como simple estación.
