CBS EYE ON THE WORLD WITH JOHN BATCHELOR THE SHOW BEGINS IN THE DOUBTS ABOUT THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION'S PLANS FOR THE DOD 10-1-25 FIRST HOUR 9-915 Colonel Jeff McCausland observes that Europe is preparing to deal with Russia's hybrid warfare (drones, cyber, incursions) independently, driven by the belief that the Trump administration is prioritizing homeland defense. European leaders are discussing a "drone wall" and achieving 5% GDP defense spending. McCausland also analyzes the 20-point Gaza peace plan, which involves an immediate hostage release, phased Israeli withdrawal, and a multinational peacekeeping force, noting Russia would likely gain from regional stabilization. 915-930  Colonel Jeff McCausland observes that Europe is preparing to deal with Russia's hybrid warfare (drones, cyber, incursions) independently, driven by the belief that the Trump administration is prioritizing homeland defense. McCausland also analyzes the 20-point Gaza peace plan, which involves an immediate hostage release, phased Israeli withdrawal, and a multinational peacekeeping force, noting Russia would likely gain from regional stabilization. 930-945  Andrew McCarthy and Thaddeus McCotter discuss James Comey potentially being a target of the Trumpadministration, focusing on charges of lying to Congress under the broader false statements statute (1001), rather than traditional perjury. Proof of "willfulness" is required, which signifies a heightened mental state and understanding of illegality. They also analyze the Supreme Court's delay in ruling on President Trump's effort to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, deferring oral arguments until January.Preview: Andrew McCarthy and Thaddeus McCotter discuss James Comey potentially being a target of the Trumpadministration, focusing on charges of lying to Congress under the broader false statements statute (1001), rather than traditional perjury. SECOND HOUR 10-1015  Colonel Grant Newsham assesses South Korea's leftist President Yoon Suk Yeol, describing him as pro-China and anti-US, despite his vow to increase defense spending. Newsham views this spending partly as a tactical ploy to avoid reliance on US troops. Separately, he highlights Chinese influence and rampant corruption in the US territory of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), which is brazenly seeking $100 million from the USdespite $1.6 billion having vanished. 1015-1030  Colonel Grant Newsham assesses South Korea's leftist President Yoon Suk Yeol, describing him as pro-China and anti-US, despite his vow to increase defense spending. Separately, he highlights Chinese influence and rampant corruption in the US territory of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), which is brazenly seeking $100 million from the USdespite $1.6 billion having vanished. 1030-1045 Brandon Weichert analyzes the growing threat of space warfare, referencing Russia's satellites shadowing German intelligence satellites and the Sino-Russian "no limits partnership." He explains that co-orbital satellites can render ground forces "deaf, dumb and blind." Weichert suggests developing small, cheap "bodyguard satellites" alongside France to protect sensitive US military constellations, acknowledging that space technology is inherently dual-use. 1045-1100 David Maxwell discusses South Korea's military spending increase, the largest in over 15 years, which supports the goal of developing independent warfighting capabilities and transitioning operational control (OPCON). He clarifies that the complexity of OPCON transfer is often misunderstood as a sovereignty issue. Maxwell notes that North Korea is thriving due to growing support from China and Russia, making Kim Jong-un less motivated to normalize relations with the United States. THIRD HOUR 1100-1115 Preview: Professor John Yoo examines US missile attacks on alleged Venezuelan drug boats, differentiating military force (war) from law enforcement (crime). He suggests that if the Maduro regime is using drug cartels like Tren de Aragua as instruments of attack against the US, it constitutes a state of war, justifying military action. Yoo argues that the president can use force defensively without seeking a declaration of war if the US is attacked first, even unconventionally. 1115-1130 Professor John Yoo examines US missile attacks on alleged Venezuelan drug boats, differentiating military force (war) from law enforcement (crime). He reports significant setbacks for competitors, including an explosion during a Firefly Alpha static fire test and NASA canceling the cargo contract for Sierra Space's Dream Chaser due to over a year of unexplained silence and delays. 1145-1200 Bob Zimmerman details SpaceX's target of October 13th for the next Starship Super Heavy orbital test flight, which will focus on testing various engine firing configurations during the Super Heavy booster's return. FOURTH HOUR 12-1215 Patrycja Bazylczyk defines the Golden Dome as a reorientation of US missile defense policy to counter next-generation threats from near-peer adversaries, Russia and China. The defense, which involves a space component (HBTSS), supports the nuclear triad by strengthening deterrence through both denial and punishment. She notes that critics argue the program is unaffordable (estimated $175 billion) and destabilizing, but stresses the need for sustained, bipartisan funding to build the necessary architecture. 1215-1230 Patrycja Bazylczyk defines the Golden Dome as a reorientation of US missile defense policy to counter next-generation threats from near-peer adversaries, Russia and China. He emphasizes the critical need for procurement reform and securing domestic supply chains for materials like steel and aluminum. Holt also addresses the military's shift back to a "warrior ethos" away from "woke" culture, suggesting this change is already leading to honorable resignations and retirements among senior officers. 1245-100 AM Preview: Rick Fisher describes Victor Gao as a "Han envoy" used in China's "cognitive warfare" to spread propaganda, including the claim that China has the world's most powerful military. Gao falsely claimed China possesses a "super weapon," the DF-61, armed with 61 nuclear warheads, capable of reaching any global point in 20 minutes. Fisher also analyzes the propaganda surrounding the new Fujian aircraft carrier, noting that claims of its superiority over the USS Ford are easily refutable.

Elsa Fouragnan is an Associate Professor and UKRI Future Leader Fellow at the University of Plymouth. We talk mainly about her work on focussed transcranial ultrasound stimulation, a new non-invasive way other stimulating (human) brains, including deep areas that can't be reached with TMS. We also discuss her childhood in French Polynesia, how she started doing research, what it's like seeing a brain during surgery, and much more. This was the first episode I recorded in-person. And our long, conspiratorial discussion in this episode about seasonal windows might mean our tinfoil hats were on a little too tight!  But this new info comes from a good source, so we're passing it along. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for August 19, 2025 is: euphemism • YOO-fuh-miz-um • noun A euphemism is a mild or pleasant word or phrase that is used instead of one that is unpleasant or offensive. // The HR department advises using the euphemism “let go” instead of saying that someone was fired. See the entry > Examples: “The new model supposedly has fewer hallucinations—a common euphemism for when AI models produce inaccurate or misleading results.” — Antonio Pequeño IV, Forbes, 27 Feb. 2025 Did you know? There are times when circumstances call for a gentler or pleasanter word or phrase rather than the most direct one. Such words and phrases are known as euphemisms, with the word euphemism coming, fittingly, from the Greek word eúphēmos, meaning “sounding good.” Powder room, for example, is one of many euphemisms in the English language for a lavatory, aka the place where one goes when one requires the use of a toilet and sink. (Actually, we are hard pressed to find a non-euphemistic word for such a room; like powder room, the terms bathroom, restroom, and washroom all tiptoe around the often-primary reason one has for visiting it.) Similarly love handles is a euphemism for fatty bulges along the sides of one's body at the waist, though as everyone who's ever snuggled up to a loved one endowed with such bulges knows, love handles is a much better descriptor for what makes a person extra snuggly.

Krave Beauty isn't your average K-Beauty brand. “[Our mission] resonates with a lot of people who are really tired of the beauty industry's narrative of ‘more is more,'” CEO and co-founder Liah Yoo told Glossy.  After getting her start working for Amorepacific in Seoul, South Korea, Yoo joined YouTube to share her own skin challenges. “I was documenting my acne skin struggles in my mid 20s, and I literally tried everything,” she said. “Nothing worked until I pressed reset and simplified my routine, going from a 14-step skin-care routine to a super minimal three-step skin-care routine [with] super gentle, minimal, hydrating ingredients.” In today's episode, Yoo walks us through the process of sourcing tamanu oil, a main ingredient in Krave's best-selling $28 Great Barrier Relief Serum. But first, Lexy Lebsack is joined by senior reporter Emily Jensen to discuss the news of the week. This includes Rare Beauty's foray into fragrance with Rare Eau de Parfum, a $75 fragrance created with famous nose Jerome Epinette. It launches at Sephora on August 7. Lebsack and Jensen also discuss a lineup of new C-suite appointments, including new execs at Herbivore and Saltair. Finally, they discuss L'Oréal's latest earnings and a shift happening within the in-office injectable marketplace.

In this special summer episode of the Remarkable Retail podcast, recorded live at the CommerceNext Growth Show in New York, we welcome Jeannie Yoo, CEO of Draper James, for a wide-ranging conversation on the brand's growth trajectory, the power of celebrity in retail, and the rise of human-centric retail experiences.Jeannie brings two decades of fashion retail experience to the table, from her early days at Michael Kors and Coach to leading the luxury house Adam Lippes. Now nine months into her role at Draper James, Yoo is steering the Southern-rooted lifestyle brand—founded by Reese Witherspoon—through its next stage of growth, marked by its 10th anniversary "decade tour" and a sharpened focus on customer connection.Yoo discusses how Draper James defies the "digitally native" label, thriving through retail stores, with licensing and pop-ups that foster personal, local, and sensory experiences. While the brand's celebrity origin story is foundational, Yoo emphasizes how its growth is now powered by inclusive pricing, joyful storytelling, and a culture of Southern hospitality. Reese Witherspoon remains involved, but the brand is scaling under Yoo's operational leadership and with the backing of Consortium Brand Partners.Central to the conversation is Yoo's take on "human-centric retailing"—a strategy rooted in community engagement, elevated in-store experiences, and product innovation informed by customer passions for gardening, books, and food. She describes how Draper James curates joy through both product and experience, emphasizing quality over quantity in an era of fashion abundance. Technology, particularly AI, plays a role, but not the leading one. The focus, she notes, is on enabling smarter, more efficient work—not replacing human intuition or creativity.Looking ahead, Yoo sees North American expansion—especially retail and licensing—as the brand's most significant opportunity before tackling global markets. She also reflects on her leadership style, which has been forged in both large organizations and niche luxury brands, allowing her to scale thoughtfully without losing the emotional resonance that makes Draper James special. COSMO (Shrugs, at a loss) Look— Timmy. TIMMY This is wild! COSMO I need you to make a wish! TIMMY …what. COSMO A wish. A wish, Timmy! TIMMY Oh, no— not this again. COSMO It's the only way! TIMMY But you're not even my fairy anymore! COSMO Timmy Turner, I will always be your fairy. *sniffs* (Kind of awkward, heartwarming moment— they hug; the guard peeks through the window and squints at them, grimacing) Wide shot of two dudes hugging in prison. TIMMY Okay… COSMO Yeah, let's. TIMMY Yeah. COSMO Anyway, Tim, I need you to make a wish. TIMMY “Tim” don't call me that! COSMO Well, it's weird calling you “Timmy, you're like 40.” TIMMY Yeah, but— COSMO Make a wish, Timmy. [beat] The guard peers in through the window, this time with popped corn TIMMY and COSMO both squint awkwardly. COSMO Uh… TIMMY Yeah, okay— COSMO Hurry. TIMMY I wish… *POOF* Suddenly, Cosmo and Timmy are back in Timmy's old room— not much has changed, but it seems off and kind of odd; TIMMY and COSMO are still— well— aged. Just then, TIMMY'S FATHER enters through the door. TIMMY'S DAD (Chris Parnell) enters, leaning into the door. TIMMY'S DAD Timmy?! TIMMY Uh… DAD! TIMMY'S DAD (He squints suspiciously at Cosmo) …and who's this? TIMMY Uh, this— TIMMY'S DAD …it's Wednesday… isn't it? TIMMY This, uhm… COSMO I'm uh— TIMMY This is my— COSMO Ahem. Parole officer. TIMMY Yeah. TIMMY'S DAD You never cease to disappoint me, son. TIMMY Thanks. TIMMY'S DAD. I'll leave you to it. Before he gets exits, he pauses for a moment and stares into Cosmo // parallel (as) Chris Parnell / as Jimmy Fallon. TIMMY'S DAD (To Cosmo) …do I know you? COSMO No, I don't think so. TIMMY'S DAD Are you sure? COSMO Positive…pretty much. TIMMY'S DAD You're probably right— you just TIMMY Uh, dad— TIMMY'S DAD You look so familiar. COSMO (Flatly) …no, I don't. TIMMY All of it?! COSMO Obviously not all of it— enough to get us out of that last mess! TIMMY Oh, this is awful. We have to find Wanda! COSMO no, wait! As TIMMY attempts to leave, a loud ringing from his ankle begins to ring; TIMMY'S FATHER returns just to squint, scowling at his son before murmuring TIMMY'S DAD you know the rules. TIMMY steps back inside the room, his father shuts it, at first normally, then slamming it at the last moment. COSMO Yeah, that. TIMMY What is this?! COSMO You're under house arrest! Obviously! TIMMY What!! What gives?! COSMO I granted your wish! TIMMY Like, half of it! COSMO Half is about all I've got—! TIMMY Are you kidding me?! COSMO I wish! COSMO Well, I can leave. You can't. TIMMY Okay… COSMO Yeah, that's. TIMMY What If I wished for Wanda to be here, then? COSMO … I don't know. TIMMY That's what I'll do. COSMO I don't know, Tim. TIMMY Stop calling me that. COSMO It's very weird calling you “Timmy” TIMMY That's my name. COSMO Whatever! TIMMY I wish Wanda was here! COSMO No! TIMMY What! Why not, COSMO She might get mad. In this episode of Crossing Faiths, John Pinna talks with Joseph Yoo, an Episcopalian pastor, about a wide array of topics, beginning with their shared, humorous appreciation for professional wrestling, which serves as a recurring touchstone for discussions on belief, community, and the nature of fandom. Yoo shares his journey from a Methodist upbringing (his father was a preacher) to becoming an Episcopalian priest and his current work planting a new, inclusive church in a former bakery in Texas, emphasizing the importance of belonging before believing. They explore themes of faith deconstruction, the interpretation of scripture (using Jonah as an example), the challenges and nuances of church leadership, and outreach in the modern world, all interwoven with personal anecdotes and lighthearted banter about cultural differences in religious practice and the human need for meaning. Law Talk returns and in this excursion,  Charles C.W. Cooke, Richard Epstein, and John Yoo tackle a grab bag of constitutional issues with their usual mix of legal scholarship and exasperation (typically with each other). First up: the state of Maine, apparently auditioning for a role in a dystopian novel, bans a legislator from speaking because her views on gender in sports offend the ruling party. Epstein and Yoo are, unsurprisingly, not impressed. Then it's on to Trump's latest target—Harvard—where he wants to yank their tax-exempt status for what he sees as race-based admissions sins. Yoo says, “Hey, Bob Jones University got smacked for less,” while Epstein warns that burning down universities to own the libs might be a bit much. Things get even spicier with the arrest of a Wisconsin judge who allegedly helped an illegal immigrant sneak out the back door—Yoo and Epstein agree it's legally justified, but question whether perp-walking a judge was really necessary. Finally, the gang ponders whether chatbots have First Amendment rights, with the consensus being: no, and let's hope the robots don't hear us say that.

The U.S. has sent people it has detained — people it calls terrorists — to a prison overseas — indefinitely. This is true in 2025, after the Trump administration deported at least 261 foreign nationals to a maximum security prison in El Salvador. And it was also true two decades ago, following the attacks of Sept. 11, after the U.S. government began to house captured Taliban and al-Qaida fighters in the military prison at the U.S. Naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.During the George W. Bush administration, John Yoo wrote the legal justification for the treatment of Guantanamo detainees, now widely referred to as "the torture memos."Yoo argues that there are key legal differences between what the Bush administration did – and what the Trump administration is attempting in El Salvador. For sponsor-free episodes of Consider This, sign up for Consider This+ via Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org.Email us at considerthis@npr.org.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTH *Producer note: a listener has explained to me how PO boxes work* A woman walks into a bar as Oliver narrates over the scene. We see that she ends up in the background of a selfie while she's walking around. She sits at the bar, writes a letter, and puts a stamp on it. When she notices the cops looking around, she quickly leaves, causing the letter to fall to the floor and get kicked under the bar. Fast forward five years: the gang is at brunch. Ramon brings them a letter he found under the bar — it turns out this brunch spot and the nightclub from five years ago are one and the same. They can't make anything out from the outside of the letter, so they open it. Unfortunately, the letter couldn't be less helpful — it's even signed "Me," almost as if it's written in code. We also find out that Shane and Rita are both pregnant! Yippie! Oliver and Shane go to tell Oliver's dad that they're expecting. Oliver is also working with his dad to open a postal museum. While going through the attic, Oliver's dad finds a box labeled "For Oliver Someday" and quickly tries to hide it. The next day, they're back at the office when Charley reads the letter and immediately realizes that the author is talking about the now-famous artist Nate Hallaway. Shane looks him up and sees he's playing a gig in Vegas. ROAD TRIP! Oliver and Shane go to a doctor's appointment, and everything is looking good with the baby. However, Oliver realizes he knows very little about his family history. He goes to talk to his dad, who then gives him the "For Oliver Someday" box. Meanwhile, the gang makes it to the Vegas show. At first, Nate acts like he doesn't know what they're talking about. But after the show, he admits the truth: the letter is from a woman named Tracy Rio. She wrote his best songs. That night, she had suddenly disappeared without telling him why. Since then, she has been sending him songs and he sends money via a P.O. box every month. The team stakes out the P.O. box until someone matching Tracy's description shows up. They follow her and discover that she's now a caregiver. She invites them in and shares her story: she's been on the run ever since her dad robbed a bank when she was a child. Her whole family has been "wanted" ever since. When she turned 18, her mom gave her money and stamps, and they communicated through a postal box. After that fateful night, she assumed the box no longer worked and never wrote again. She asks the team to find her mom and tell her she's okay. While working on this, Oliver reads through the letters his dad kept and begins to question why his dad held onto them all these years. As he's processing all of this, Oliver tracks Tracy's mom to a nearby church. He delivers Tracy's letter and tells her he must report her to the police. However, he finds out she has another daughter who will turn 18 in six weeks, so he agrees to give her that time before reporting her. Oliver and his dad have a heart-to-heart about fatherhood and reconcile. Six weeks later, it's time for the gala to raise money for the postal museum. Tracy — whose real name is Lilly — shows up, and her mom is there too. Lilly goes on stage to sing. Meanwhile, Oliver tells her mom that it's time: the feds are waiting. She turns herself in, and Oliver reunites Lilly and Nate backstage. The movie ends with the gang hanging out, drinking Yoo-hoo, and Rita finding out that the baby they're adopting was just born — so they rush off together.

President Trump's executive actions are being blocked left, right, and center by federal courts issuing nationwide injunctions – or orders for the government to halt a given policy that judges deem unlawful. However, the constitutionality of these national injunctions is up for debate. Should the Supreme Court decide that judicial policy pronouncements are indeed unconstitutional, what will that mean for Executive power? Could it mean that Congress will need to resume doing the work it has shirked for years? And what will it mean for the Trump agenda?John Yoo is the Emanuel Heller Professor of Law at the University of California at Berkeley, a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, a Senior Research Fellow at the Civitas Institute, and a Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution and Stanford University. Yoo was a law clerk for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, the general council of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and the former head of the Office of Legal Counsel in the Justice Department.
