In this episode of Occupied Thoughts, FMEP Fellow Peter Beinart speaks with Jaser Abu Mousa, a 2025 Yale Peace Fellow and past Program Officer working for the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in Gaza. The two discuss life and death in Gaza on personal and collective levels. They look at Hamas, which Jaser calls a "symptom" of the problem of occupation; at how the past two-plus years of war have destroyed not only all the infrastructure needed for life in Gaza but also the social fabric, as starvation and deprivation have broken human bonds and relationships; and the ways in which Israel works to make Gaza unlivable. On a personal level, Jaser speaks of his experiences in Gaza, from the violence he witnessed as a child during the second Intifada to the devastation he experienced on and since October 7, 2023: his wife, Heba, and two of his children were killed by Israeli missiles in mid-October 2023; after two years of starvation and deprivation, his mother, sister, and sister's children were killed in the war in July 2025; and his family suffered other losses, including the killing of a nephew in the beginning of the war, injuring of his father, and arrest, detention, and violence against his brother along with other medical workers. Navigating these unfathomable losses, Jaser points to his faith in God and religion as guides as he seeks to protect his living children and look towards the future. Finally, Jaser reflects on how he relates to Israelis and declares that "if I strip him from his right to tell his story, that does not make me more just, but will make me less human.” Jaser Abu Mousa is a Yale Peace Fellow examining how Gaza's postwar reconstruction can reflect Palestinians' priorities while repairing the social fabric of society. Most recently, he was a Program Officer working for the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in Gaza, Palestine until the breakout of the current war in October 2023. During the war, Jaser lost his wife, Heba, and two children, Hmaid (18) and Abdulrahman (8), and left Gaza with his remaining two children, Abdallah and Sham, for treatment in the United Arab Emirates. Prior to his work with Swiss, Jaser served in the UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS), working under immense pressure during the 2014 war to report incidents, coordinated and communicate movements and follow intense political developments. Prior to that, Jaser worked as a social worker for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in the aftermath of the 2009 war, including leading a team of 50 social workers to run the poverty survey for UNRWA in the area of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. He also led a team of engineers to verify the work of a European contribution 30 million Euros known as the Private Sector Reconstruction in Gaza (PSRG). Between 2006-2009, he worked extensively as a political researcher in a Gaza-based think tank; during this period he reported on and analyzed Hamas' rise to power in the Strip. Jaser holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the Islamic University of Gaza and a Master of Science degree in Project Management. In addition to his work as an analyst and a development/humanitarian practitioner, he has worked as a civil engineer at private construction companies and UN agencies. Peter Beinart is a Non-Resident Fellow at the Foundation for Middle East Peace. He is also a Professor of Journalism and Political Science at the City University of New York, a Contributing opinion writer at the New York Times, an Editor-at-Large at Jewish Currents, and an MSNBC Political Commentator. His newest book (published 2025) is Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza: A Reckoning. Original music by Jalal Yaquoub.

The global landscape is rapidly changing, leaving economies, businesses, and workers in a state of uncertainty. In response, Canada is focused on what we can control: securing new trade and investment partnerships so we are not reliant on a single country, but more resilient to global shocks. We are positioning Canada as a strong, reliable partner to secure new capital, develop new export markets, and create new opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses. To advance that mission, the Prime Minister, Mark Carney, travelled to Doha, Qatar – the first-ever visit by a sitting Canadian Prime Minister to the state. The Prime Minister met with the Amir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to discuss increasing trade, commerce, investment, and security cooperation. Upon concluding the visit, the leaders announced a commitment from Qatar to make significant strategic investments in Canadian nation-building projects. These investments will get major projects built faster, supercharge our clean energy, health, AI, and defence industries, and create thousands of high-paying careers and sustained prosperity for Canadian workers. Building on this momentum, the Prime Minister and the Amir issued a joint statement committing to accelerated two-way investment and collaboration across AI, quantum computing, aerospace, defence technologies, advanced manufacturing, agriculture, and agri-food. After years of stalled negotiations, the leaders agreed to conclude negotiations on a new Canada-Qatar Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) by this summer. This will enable Canadian businesses to more easily expand their operations in, and attract investment from, Qatar – a country with an economy worth nearly $290 billion. Building on this progress, Canada and Qatar agreed to immediately deepen work together on:Bilateral trade and investment through the establishment of a Joint Canada-Qatar Commission on Economic, Commercial, and Technical Cooperation.Information technology, expanding investment opportunities in areas such as AI and information and computer technology.Defence and security, launching negotiations on a framework to facilitate the exchange of expertise on military, security, and defence matters.A new double-taxation agreement to make it easier for Canadians to work and invest in Qatar and vice versa, with negotiations starting soon.To further build this partnership, Prime Minister Carney announced that Canada will: Expand air services between the two countries under the Canada-Qatar Air Transport Agreement.Establish an office for Canada's Defence Attaché in Doha to increase the frequency and depth of bilateral engagements that increase exports from Canada's defence sector.Exchange security-related best practices and lessons learned in preparation for the FIFA World Cup 26, as Canada, Mexico, and the United States prepare to co-host this global sporting event. As Qatar marks the beginning of its 2026 Year of Culture, Prime Minister Carney emphasised the important and growing people-to-people and cultural ties between the two countries. He extended an invitation to His Highness the Amir as well as Qatar's Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, to visit Canada in the coming year. While in Doha, the Prime Minister met with the Minister of Public Health of Qatar to reinforce shared priorities in health and life science. He underscored the potential for Canadian companies to grow their footprint in Qatar's healthcare ecosystem, including in biotechnology and groundbreaking AI-driven health technologies. He also met with Qatari business leaders and heads of the Qatari Investment Authority to explore more opportunities to collaborate, further positioning Canada as a premier destination for global capital and investment. Canada and Qatar are both economies with preeminent resources, with common goals to diversify trade and investment opportunities, with complementary strengths in technology, security, and international leadership. As Canada works to build major new energy projects, scale up our defence capabilities, and build on our leadership in AI and innovative technologies, strengthening our partnership with Qatar will accelerate these missions. January 20 2026 Annalena Baerbock said her priorities for the remainder of the session focus on institutional defense and reform. She said, “I invited Member States to symbolically recommit to our shared principles and values by signing the 80th Anniversary Charter poster ahead of Charter Day.” She added Member States echoed that call. Baerbock said changes in global politics require new approaches. She said, “The political and diplomatic ecosystem has undergone drastic changes, and we can't expect the old ways of working to suffice.” Baerbock said Member States are engaging with reform efforts, “The UN80 initiative, while not coming at the most desirable time or in the best condition, is overdue.” Baerbock said the selection of the next Secretary-General is another priority this year, with interactive dialogues with candidates are scheduled for April. She said the process will include Member States and civil society. PGA said, “Our choice of who will lead this organization is a chance to send a clear message in this turbulent time about who we are and what the United Nation stands for.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/policy-and-rights--3339563/support.
War was never the plan. So how did the situation change so quickly? The Muslims left Madinah intending to intercept a caravan. But once the caravan escaped, new information reached both sides, and the direction of events shifted. In episode 76 of the Seerah, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan explains how matters developed as Quraysh continued advancing toward Badr. Their numbers, leadership, and intentions become clear, as does why some tribes chose to turn back while others pressed on. The episode also follows the decisions made by the Prophet ﷺ as the reality of a battle became unavoidable. Consultation takes place, different opinions are voiced, and firm commitments are given by the companions, especially as responsibility settles on those who would bear the greatest cost. You'll learn how the Muslims prepared on the ground, how information was gathered, how positions were chosen near the wells of Badr, and how Allah supported them through the night with calm, rest, and stability. The Prophet ﷺ spends the night in duʿa, while the army prepares for what lies ahead. The battle has not begun yet. But everything needed for it is now in place. Feeling at ease. Still sinning. Still telling yourself, Allah is Forgiving. But what if that calm is exactly the danger? In this powerful reminder, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan uncovers why the Quran warns against feeling safe from Allah's plan, and why delay, comfort, and "I'll repent later" have destroyed people before. Why were the Salaf afraid when doors of Dunya opened? When does ease stop being mercy? And why does punishment often come when people feel least threatened? A sobering wake-up for anyone relying on time instead of repentance. A young Pakistani man who quietly carries out his responsibilities in the forests, mountains, and deserted paths, who has neither the backing of any major organization nor any special support from home, but has the courage to save countless lives.
The journey to Badr didn't begin with a battlefield. It began with small moments that tested the companions one by one. Some were told to return, others tried to stay hidden, and lessons were given on the road that shaped the mindset of the entire group. What seemed like a simple march became a series of decisions that revealed what each person carried in their heart. Meanwhile in Makkah, a sudden wave of news moved through the city and forced Quraysh to react. What they chose next set both sides on a path neither could step away from. Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan explains how these moments built the lead-up to Badr and why they changed the direction of the story. The clash hasn't begun yet, but the turning point is close. Every Muslim tries to make sense of life's mistakes, its setbacks, and the moments that test patience and character. The Prophet ﷺ didn't leave us to figure these things out alone. His short, comprehensive words teach us how to walk through life with clarity, balance, and wisdom. In this fourth part of Jawami' al-Akhbar by Imam al-Sa'di, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan explains ahadith that speak directly to your daily reality: reminders that shape the way you think, react, and grow as a believer. This episode explores: - How a believer learns from painful experiences instead of repeating the same mistakes. - How planning, discipline, and self-control protect your time, your focus, and your worship. - How to recognise arrogance before it settles into the heart. - How contentment turns even limited provision into sufficiency. - How certain doors of good open or stay closed, depending on the choices you make. - Why temptations feel strong, and how to meet them with strength. - How simple acts of goodness carry weight with Allah and reshape your character. - How to guard your salah, hold your tongue, and control your anger, especially when it's hardest. - How to treat people with fairness, even when emotions run high. These ahadith aren't theoretical. They're practical guidance for anyone trying to live with sincerity, protect their habits, and build a character that will stand firm on the Day they meet Allah. A caravan returning from Sham set the stage for the first major battle in Islam. In this episode, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan explains how a simple attempt to intercept Quraysh's wealth became Yawm al-Furqan, the day Allah separated truth from falsehood. He covers the precise date of Badr (Friday, 17 Ramadan, 2 AH), why the Prophet ﷺ left Madinah without calling for a full mobilisation, and how a small group of Sahabah was chosen for a test they never expected. You'll also hear why the people of Badr were given a unique status, along with early incidents that showed Allah's support for them. This session establishes the cause and context of Badr before the military details continue in the next episode. 0:00:00 - Precap and Introduction 0:03:52 - The Greatness and Virtue of the Battle of Badr 0:08:07 - Distinct Features of the Battle of Badr 0:15:42 - The Background to the Battle 0:22:23 - Setting Out for the Caravan 0:28:09 - How Many Were the Sahabah? 0:33:04 - Those Who Didn't Participate 0:43:50 - What We'll Cover Next AMAU Junior: https://amaujunior.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amau... Imagine waking up one day and realising everything you believed was true… was a lie. The scariest part? You were convinced you were right the entire time. Ignorance isn't harmless. It's the disease that blinds a person while they believe they can see. Across the world, Muslims have endless access to knowledge - reminders, verses, hadith, fatawa - all just a scroll away. Yet never has confusion been so widespread. Sins parade as "freedom." Music is suddenly rebranded as "halal" by modern du'āt despite clear proof to the contrary. Zina, alcohol, and misguidance are no longer shameful - they're personal "choices," "differences of opinion," and "no big deal." The signs of the Hour flicker around us while people argue online. The guardians of knowledge diminish, and ignorance confidently rises to take their place - shaping beliefs, corrupting morals, and slowly dismantling the Ummah from within. People feel confident discussing matters that once made the greatest Sahabah pause. Opinions replace evidence. Impulse replaces forbearance. Foolishness replaces understanding. Ignorance isn't just "not knowing." It is turning away from the truth when it comes. It is rejecting what saves the soul. It is the very reason past nations fell - even after witnessing miracles with their own eyes. It is why some Muslims cannot recognise truth anymore - even when it stands clearly in front of them. It is why sins feel easier than obedience. It is why misguided voices sound convincing. It is why the heart feels dark, heavy, and spiritually dead. This lecture by Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan dives deep into the Qur'an and Sunnah to expose: • How ignorance destroys Iman • Why it leads to shirk, sin, and moral collapse • The spiritual blindness that blocks truth • Why Allah turns away from those who turn away from knowledge • The simple, powerful cures Allah has given us So now, the real question comes to be - are you okay being ignorant? Or will you revive your heart with the light Allah revealed? Every day, Muslims chase something. A better job, a higher position, a name that people recognise. We tell ourselves it's just “for financial stability” or “to give my family a good life”. But somewhere along the way, that chase stops being a means and becomes the purpose. The Prophet ﷺ warned us about this chase in one terrifying image: two hungry wolves let loose upon a flock of sheep. Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali, one of the great scholars of Islam, unpacked this hadith in his timeless work Dhamm al-Maal wal-Jaah — showing how the hunger for money and fame tears into the heart more viciously than wolves ever could. But Ibn Rajab didn't stop there. He explained how these desires quietly grow, how they disguise themselves as “hard work” or “success,” and how they can make even acts of worship lose their sincerity. He exposed how wealth can blind, how status can corrupt, and how seeking leadership can ruin a person long before they realise it. This 8-hour explanation isn't just an old book lesson. It's a mirror. A mirror for the 21st-century Muslim drowning in work, bills, and social media noise - chasing promotions, likes, and validation, all while the soul grows emptier. Can your sins affect your lifespan? If they do, is it your years that get reduced or the barakah that disappears? In Episode 22 of Ad-Daa' wa Ad-Dawaa' (The Disease and the Cure), Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan explains how sins quietly drain a person's life. They block acts of obedience, make worship heavy, and turn repentance into a struggle. One sin opens the door to another, until the heart grows numb and the years pass with little to show. Sins waste what could've been a life full of khayr, while obedience brings ease, clarity, and barakah - even in a short lifespan. Watch this episode. It might show you what's been taking the life out of your worship, and how to bring it back. For sixteen months, the Prophet ﷺ and his companions prayed toward Jerusalem. Then, in the middle of Rajab, everything changed. But what happened when the revelation came down during Asr prayer? And what about those companions praying miles away in Masjid Quba who had no idea the Qibla had just shifted? In this episode of the Seerah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan takes us through one of the most pivotal moments in Islamic history: the day the Muslim Ummah turned toward the Kaaba. Discover the dramatic scene of companions mid-prayer, the single messenger who changed everything, and the Jews of Medina who called the Muslims "dimwitted" for this divine command. But that's not all. Why did the Prophet ﷺ long to face the Kaaba while still honouring Jerusalem? What hidden fiqh rulings emerged from this single event? And how does the fasting of Ashura connect to this momentous occasion? The stage is now set for the greatest battle in Islamic history: a battle where Allah Himself promised forgiveness to its participants. Are you ready to witness what happens next? Born Muslim or a revert for years. Praying five times a day. Yet you still Google “is my prayer valid?” at every mistake in Salah. You trade daily but barely know the forms of Riba. You make business deals without learning the rulings of Buyu'. You'll debate world politics with confidence, but when it comes to Taharah or the fundamentals of the Deen? Silence. The scholars of Islam memorised on their deathbeds, still learning until their last breath. Meanwhile, you keep putting it off, living as if knowledge is for “later,” while every day takes you closer to meeting Allah. Allah raises the people of knowledge above all others. So what are you waiting for? In this reminder, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan unveils the one reason you were created, exposes why “ChatGPT fatwas” and shortcuts are ruining your Deen, and revives the tried and tested method of seeking Islamic knowledge that the Ummah has forgotten. Don't let another day slip away. Every delay is meeting Allah with less. Watch now, and make this the day your journey begins. You're crushing it at work or uni, but can't stop looking at what you shouldn't when you're alone. You give charity publicly but backbite privately. You know the names of all the Premier League players, but "not much" about the scholars of Ahlus Sunnah. Your parents think you're the perfect Muslim child while you're drowning in guilt cycles you can't break. Religious enough to feel shame, worldly enough to keep sinning. Don't you think it's time to change? Watch Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan break down this forgotten treatise by Ibn Taymiyyah's student Ibn al-Habbal - battle-tested advice from someone who survived real consequences. He explains how to protect your heart and your time, the only two things that actually matter. How to stop trying to please everyone and focus on pleasing Allah alone. The brutal reminder: You're ageing but your sins aren't decreasing. Every breath is documented. You'll answer for every moment you had health, free time, and youth. What's your response going to be? Learn what's destroying Muslims today that's worse than private sins - the same extremism that ruined past nations. Going overboard with righteous people, and drifting towards shirk by asking dead saints for help instead of making dua directly to Allah. We spend years working on our careers, chasing promotions, saving for homes, building comfort for our families. From the outside, it looks like growth. But in the sight of Allah, what's our real balance sheet? At every Janazah, we feel it for a moment: watching someone lowered into the grave and thinking, “One day that'll be me.” Yet within hours, we're back to the grind. Back to chasing the same wealth and routines that won't follow us past the soil. The Prophet ﷺ told us that three things accompany every person to the grave: family, wealth, and deeds. But only one remains. The other two - the very things we obsess over - abandon us the moment we need them most. So what are you really investing in? Your children and wealth, which stay behind? Or your deeds, which remain with you forever? In this reminder, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan unpacks the Akhirah investment strategy every believer needs to hear: - Why Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه became the greatest in just 30 years - not through more worship, but through the state of his heart. - Why Hassan al-Basri warned that time with family and wealth is devastatingly short. - What it means to own two houses - the one you obsess over now, and the one you'll live in forever. - And what really decides whether your grave becomes a garden of Jannah or a pit of Fire. This isn't about Dunya's net worth. It's about the only net worth that matters. The one revealed when you're lowered into the ground. What are you leaving behind? We wake up running after deadlines, studies, careers, and distractions that never end. We scroll for hours, but never feel fulfilled. We complain about the weakness of our Ummah, yet struggle to see where strength begins. And at the back of our minds sits a question we try to ignore: what if death comes before we figure it out? This khutbah cuts to the heart of that struggle. It's about the gap between what we live for and what we were actually created for - and why that gap decides everything. And when the answer finally comes, it circles back to the very first command in the Qur'an, and the last words every believer longs to say: La ilaha illallah, the shahada. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Diplomatic correspondent Lazar Berman joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is in Israel and at recording time has just finished his meeting in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Jerusalem office. On Friday, Trump and special envoy Steve Witkoff had dinner with the Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani in New York, after al-Thani held a four-hour-long meeting with Vice President JD Vance and Rubio at the White House. We learn what Rubio has so far said during his meetings in Israel about Israel's strike on Hamas leaders in US-ally Qatar last week. We also speak about the stated agenda for Rubio's visit to participate in the opening of the Pilgrims' Path excavated tunnel that leads from east Jerusalem's City of David to the Temple Mount plaza. Qatar is still fuming over last week's attack on its soil. Qatar’s prime minister accused Israel of “state terrorism,” and said its attack in Doha last week targeting Hamas’s leaders was “an attack on the principle of mediation itself,” but nevertheless vowed to continue efforts to reach a ceasefire. Berman explains why the country will continue to serve as a mediator, even as it may attempt to stir trouble for Israel in other realms. Israel is building two new aid distribution sites, which, according to the military, will be handed over to the US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation in the coming days. The IDF invited journalists to visit the sites on Wednesday before they become operational. Berman was there and reports back on what he saw, and how the war may look moving forward. Every Muslim, at some point, asks deep questions in their heart: "Can I ever be close to Allah when I'm struggling with sins?" "Is being a Wali of Allah only for the righteous people of the past?" "How can someone like me, caught up in work, family, mistakes, and distractions, even dream of this?" You might be struggling to stand in Qiyam al-Layl. You might be feeling spiritually low, scrolling endlessly on your phone, or carrying regrets from your past. Yet deep inside, you still want to feel that closeness to Allah and to know that He loves you. This is exactly why Miftah Tareeq al-Awliyaa' was written - to show that the path to becoming beloved to Allah is not locked away in history. It's open to anyone today who sincerely wants Allah above everything else. In this session, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan explains this heart-softening work of Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Wasiti, outlining the qualities of the Awliya of Allah, the traits to develop, and the pitfalls to avoid on this journey. You woke up, reached for your phone before Fajr. Reels, DMs, crypto charts, news - heart still heavy. You prayed… fast. Parents' WhatsApp is still unread. You posted a Qur'an clip to your story, then checked who viewed it. By Maghrib, you're drained and wondering: why haven't I tasted the fruits of Iman yet? In this talk, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan delivers a wake-up reminder: what true Iman actually looks like, the fruits Allah promises in the Dunya and the Akhirah, why Shaytan has no authority over those who believe and rely on Allah, how Allah Himself defends the believers, and why ikhlas (sincerity) is the make-or-break behind every deed. He also shares the story of the Three Men in the Cave, and highlights the everyday obedience many of us overlook: Salah on time and Birr al-Walidayn (dutifulness to parents). If you've ever felt your Iman slipping, performed for people instead of Allah, or chased recognition more than repentance, watch this. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. US bureau chief Jacob Magid joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. In an interview conducted in the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, Emirati special envoy Lana Nusseibeh warned Israel that annexing the West Bank would cross a “red line” that would “end the vision of regional integration.” Today, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is meant to hold a major ministerial consultation on whether to advance. Magid sets the scene and explains what Nusseibeh and the Emiratis are trying to get across to the Israeli public. Earlier in the week, on Monday, in Doha, Magid spoke with Majed al-Ansari, the spokesperson for Qatar’s lead negotiator, Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, and heard the backstory of their frustrations over the negotiation process. We reset the scene and delve into the role of Qatar as negotiator for the Gaza war -- and other global conflicts. The United States said on Friday it will not allow Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to travel to New York next month for a United Nations gathering of world leaders, where several US allies are set to recognize Palestine as a state. A State Department official told Magid that a US visa ban on Palestinian officials planning to attend the United Nations General Assembly, would cover Abbas along with 80 other PA officials. Magid explains the mechanism of withholding the visas and how it dates to a report written during the Biden administration. Last week, Magid spoke with Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon about the impending slew of recognitions of a Palestinian state. Borschel-Dan notes that his remarks could be construed as dismissive: “These countries want to show that they are doing something, so they blow off steam by coming up with these declarative statements.” We hear Magid's takeaways from the conversation. Right now, Israel's military is invading and obliterating what remains of Gaza City. After 700 days of genocidal bombing, shooting, forced starvation, and the systematic destruction of schools, hospitals, farms, refugee camps, roads, houses, and the entire infrastructure of civilian life, the Palestinians clinging to life in Gaza City are being exterminated, while others run or limp for their lives with nowhere safe to go. Amid the horrors of Israel's military onslaught, with starvation and illness spreading, Mohamed Abu Tawila, a former English teacher, and his nephew Abdul Rahman, a would-be college student, have been raising money online and risking their lives and safety to secure and transport clean water to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. In this urgent episode, we speak with Mohamed and Abdul Rahman from Gaza about their daily struggle to live in the midst of genocide. The beauty of fiqh is that it saves you from memorising 60,000 separate rulings. Instead, it teaches principles that apply to countless matters. Time to explore this treasure. Study a Manzoomah on al-Qawāʿid al-Fiqhiyyah (the legal maxims of Islamic jurisprudence) authored by Shaykh Ibn al-‘Uthaymeen رحمه الله. In this explanation, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan takes us through this beautiful sub-science. It's not a set of abstract theories. These are practical principles shaping rulings on worship, contracts, business dealings, certainty and doubt, benefit and harm, and much more. You'll see how Islam doesn't list rulings for every single case, but lays down timeless maxims that apply until the Day of Judgement. From conditions and reasons in worship, to why fasting is made up while prayers aren't, to how scholars balance benefit against harm, this study opens the door to the science of fiqh. If you want to move past surface-level answers and witness the beauty and consistency of Allah's law, this poem will give you the tools to connect the dots. Salum Abdul-Rahman: Learning to Communicate Value in Public and Non-Profit Sectors' Product Development Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. The Great Product Owner: The Systematic Value Communicator Salum describes working with a Product Owner who had a PhD in data science on a public sector visualization project. This exceptional PO was extremely systematic in working with stakeholders and possessed a unique ability to bridge abstract concepts with concrete implementations. In the public sector, where monetary feedback is absent, this PO excelled at thinking about value achievement and communicating it effectively to the team. They had the magical capability to involve stakeholders while demystifying complex requirements, helping the team understand not just engagement metrics but how their work would change society and the world. The Bad Product Owner: The Absentee Specialist The most common anti-pattern Salum encounters is the absentee Product Owner - typically a specialist assigned to the PO role while maintaining their full-time job as a domain expert. With only 10-20% time allocation, these POs lack the capacity to fulfill their responsibilities effectively. They often don't have the time or knowledge to develop essential PO skills, requiring extensive hand-holding to understand even basic concepts like user stories. Salum's approach involves booking time directly in their calendar for backlog refinement sessions and providing comprehensive guidance to help them understand the role, though this intensive support is necessary due to their limited availability for skill development. In this segment, we refer to the concept of ‘enshitification' by Cory Doctorow, and refer to Tom Gilb's bonus episode on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast. Self-reflection Question: How do you ensure your Product Owner has both the time allocation and skill development needed to truly serve the team and stakeholders effectively? Salum Abdul-Rahman: The SECI Model of Knowledge Management Applied to Team Retrospectives Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. Salum explains how the key role for Scrum Masters is to help teams develop themselves to the point where they can learn and grow without constant guidance. Success means building team resilience and operational capability while knowing when to step back. He emphasizes the importance of recalibration workshops to maintain shared understanding and the balance between supporting teams and challenging them to become self-sufficient. When teams reach this level of maturity, Scrum Masters can focus their efforts elsewhere, knowing the team has developed the capability to continue evolving independently. Featured Retrospective Format for the Week: The 5-Stage Retro Format From the book "Agile Retrospectives," this format captures the complete learning process and aligns beautifully with knowledge management principles. Salum connects the three central phases of this format to the SECI model of knowledge management, particularly referencing Nonaka and Takeuchi's work in "The Knowledge Creating Company." This retrospective structure helps teams create new knowledge and behavioral change by following a systematic approach that transforms individual insights into collective team learning and action. In this segment, we also refer to the seminal article by Takeuchi and Nonaka: “The New New Product Development Game”, which originated the work on Scrum as a framework. Self-reflection Question: How do you recognize when your team has developed enough self-sufficiency that your role as facilitator can evolve or step back? Salum Abdul-Rahman: From Lunch Conversations to Company-Wide Change—The Power of Creating Communities of Practice Within Organizations Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. Salum shares how he organically built an Agile community within his company by recognizing a shared need for discussion and learning. Starting as a software developer who took on Scrum Master tasks, he felt isolated in his Agile journey. Rather than waiting for formal training or external events, he sent out a simple invite on the company Slack for a lunch discussion during a work day. People showed up, and what began as informal conversations about different approaches to Scrum and Kanban evolved into monthly gatherings. Over time, this grassroots community grew to organize company-wide events and even found new leadership when Salum moved on, demonstrating the power of identifying shared needs and taking initiative to address them. Self-reflection Question: What shared learning needs exist in your organization that you could address by simply reaching out and organizing informal discussions? Salum Abdul-Rahman: From Isolation to Integration—Rebuilding Agile Team Connection For Remote Teams Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. Salum describes working with a grocery ecommerce team during COVID that fell into the trap of prioritizing individual convenience over team collaboration. Remote work led team members to design their work around personal preferences, with the lead developer becoming increasingly isolated and unresponsive to team communication. This anti-pattern of "what works for me" over "what works for the whole team" created significant dysfunction. Despite management intervention, the situation required creative solutions like organizing face-to-face sessions and shared working sessions with digital whiteboards to rebuild team cohesion. Featured Book of the Week: Agile Retrospectives One of the most important roles of Scrum Masters is to help teams develop themselves. Salum emphasizes that you can't tell the team what to do - you have to help them discover it themselves. "Agile Retrospectives" provides the foundation for running meaningful retrospectives that become the key tool for team self-development. The book's emphasis on variation and building retrospectives to match your team's needs and maturity level makes it essential for empowering teams to grow and evolve continuously. Self-reflection Question: How might your team's current work arrangements prioritize individual convenience over collective effectiveness, and what steps could you take to shift this balance? Salum Abdul-Rahman: The Expert Who Couldn't Connect: An Agile Team Integration Challenge Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. Salum shares a challenging situation where a software architect with deep expertise struggled to integrate with the team. Despite the architect's technical knowledge, his expert-based communication style and inability to justify reasoning created friction with other developers. The conflict escalated when the architect disengaged from teamwork and ultimately left the company. This experience highlights the importance of understanding organizational dynamics in large corporations and recognizing when separation might be the best solution for everyone involved. In this episode, we refer to Nonviolent Communication, a topic we've discussed often here on the podcast. Self-reflection Question: How do you balance respecting expertise while ensuring all team members communicate in ways that foster collaboration rather than create hierarchies? So many Muslims today are passionate about studying Islam. But let's be real: most of us start off the wrong way. We binge random lectures on YouTube, scroll through reminders on Instagram, or even ask ChatGPT to explain complex issues, thinking that's enough to make us grow. Others jump from one book to the next with no plan, memorise nothing, never revise, and want to dive into evidences and differences of opinion from day one. But that's not how the scholars sought Islamic knowledge. And that's not the path that leads to understanding. In this lesson, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan shares the blueprint for seeking knowledge the right way: sincerity before anything else, the Qur'an as your foundation, teachers over self-study, and the gradual stages every student must pass through. He explains the dangers of skipping ahead, why structure is more important than hype, and how true knowledge should raise you in rank with Allah when it's paired with action. If you've ever felt unstructured, stuck, or unsure how to move forward, this is the roadmap you've been missing. We live in a time where Muslims can lift 200kg at the gym but struggle to lift a blanket for Fajr. Where hearts drown in endless scrolling, doubts, and desires. Where practising Islam is mistaken for harshness, or where perfection is demanded until people burn out and give up. But Allah never asked you to be perfect. He asked you to be steadfast. To have Istiqamah. What does that really mean today? How do you stay on the straight path when temptations, distractions, and pressure to imitate others are everywhere? How do you protect your heart and actions - the very things Allah looks at - when they're being pulled in every direction? In this 45-minute talk, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan uncovers the reality of Istiqamah: - Why it's a gift only Allah can give, not something you earn on your own. - Why consistency matters more than perfection. - How desires grow into doubts, and doubts into leaving the Deen. - Why gentleness attracts hearts more than harshness. - How your steadfastness today decides your footing on the Sirat on the Day of Judgement. If you've ever fallen, struggled, or wondered whether you're “good enough” to stay firm on this Deen, this is for you.
