For our 34th episode, I sat down with Sharon Salzburg. Sharon is a world renowned meditation teacher. We’ve never met in person but I follow her work. I listen to her podcast, The Metta Hour and I’ve been reading her book Real Love, The Art of Mindful Connection. Although the book has been out for a while now, love has always been a difficult concept for me to fully grasp and this book was full of ah-ha moments, of explanations and ways of putting things I could really relate to. It gave me hope and tools for the future, so I thought it would be a great subject for us to tackle today.5 BIGGEST TAKEAWAYS OF THIS EPISODE1. Love is not a feeling it's an ability we all have to connect deeply to ourselves and others. The love you experience is in your own hands, it's inside you, it's yours to tend.2. Loving kindness is the antidote to fear and mindfulness gives us the ability to understand our emotions and the space to experience and move through them.3. It's correct to want to be happy. Everybody wants to be happy. Don't be ashamed of that quest. Our beliefs, our conditioning and our habits either enhance or hinder our ability to be happy.4. The ability to see and the willingness to be seen is the key to having loving relationships with others.5. You cannot fail at meditation. Your goal is not to make your mind blank or keep certain experiences from happening, our goal is to change the relationship we have to each of these experiences. Meditation is a resilience training. We learn to constantly begin again.QUESTIONS SHE ANSWERED DURING THE EPISODE :Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your journey to meditation? What is Loving Kindness vs Mindfulness and why you chose to focus your teachings on these practices instead of any other types of meditations? Why did you choose to write a book about love. What is real love? How did these practices change your life? What are the mistakes we do that keep us from genuine happiness? How do we avoid them? How can we use mindfulness as a tool to move towards it?Why is it so hard to love ourselves? How does self-love or a lack of affect how we show up in the world and how we enter in relationships? What’s the importance to understand our inter-connectivity with the world around us?In the book you talk about the concept of you-me-and the space in between. What’s in that space? Why should we care about it?How do assumptions tint our capacity to be open, to listen and be in relationship with others? How can we cultivate a Love that is more an unconditional, sustainable ability, rather than a fleeting feeling. What’s your hope for the future of meditation in this country? What do you say to people that say they can’t meditate?SUBSCRIBE, RATE & REVIEW!GIVEAWAY WINNER. Sharon Salzberg is a NYT best-selling author and teacher of Buddhist meditation practices in the West. She also cofounded the Insight Meditation Society and is the author of 9 books, the most recent being Real Love: The Art of Mindful Connection. In this episode of The Psychology Podcast, we get to learn about why Sharon has devoted her life to these ideas, how meditation has impacted her consciousness, what characterizes "real love", what differences exist between the modern-scientific notions of attachment and Buddhist notions of nonattachment, what Loving Kindness practice is, how you can love someone even if you don't like them (and why you should), how to extend compassion to people who are already self-satisfied, why an important component of self-love is accountability, empathy burnout, how stories play a role in love, why love isn't a state, why excitement vs. familiarity in romantic relationships is perhaps a false paradox, and how mindfulness can help you reframe even the most emotionally difficult situations. Sharon also takes us through her RAIN model for mindfulness: R -recognize A - acknowledge I - investigate N - nonidentification Enjoy! Cathy and Todd discuss how to embrace a challenging past by accepting it as a given rather than viewing it as a “gift” (which can sometimes feel inauthentic). This concept is taken from Sharon Salzberg's book, Real Love: The Art of Mindful Connection, and it allows us to acknowledge our experience and move forward as a force for good. They also discuss how kids can be sensitive to clothing and why it's important to find ways to keep them comfortable. They share why joy+sadness are a team, why trying to defend our emotional state can cause conflict, and explain why The Soupdragons I'm Free is Todd's empowerment song.

“You can search throughout the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself, and that person is not to be found anywhere. You, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.”Sharon SalzbergWe all yearn for connection, yet often feel trapped by our sense of isolation, anger, or envy. But there is a key that can free us from this prison of despair.Love.The problem? Love is just hard to talk about. Harder to understand. And perhaps even harder to practice. How we get it? How we give it? How do we attract it? How do we cultivate it?To answer these questions, first we have to define it.What is love, exactly? Ask Sharon Salzberg and she'll tell you that it's not an emotion we should be trying to extract from another. In fact, don't even think about love as a feeling at all. Instead, consider it as an ability. An aptness or facility that resides within all of us that can be cultivated to create real, profound connections with others, with all, and most importantly ourselves. And it is that connection that will nourish the very sustenance of life itself and ultimately set you free.Today I sit down with Sharon to redefine our limited interpretation of love. To dispel the misunderstandings that confine and circumscribe it. To plumb the eternal truths within it — love based on direct interactions rather than preconceptions. And to explore how we can better cultivate and expand our experience of real love in our daily lives. For the uninitiated, Sharon Salzberg is a towering figure in the field of meditation. A world-renowned teacher and multiple New York Times' bestselling author, she has played a central, crucial role in bringing meditation and mindfulness practices to the West and into mainstream culture dating back to 1974 when she first began teaching. Sharon is also a regular columnist for On Being, a contributor to Huffington Post, and the host of her own podcast, The Metta Hour. One of the many striking things about Sharon is that she's just cool. Like, really f*$king cool. Despite her undisputed luminary status in the meditation space, conspicuously absent is any hint of pretense or artifice. Down-to-earth and fun to be with, her approach to Buddhist teachings is modern, secular, and accessible, rendering the wisdom and it's practical applications relatable to all. This conversation is a deep dive into Sharon's extraordinary life. In an entrepreneurial world where being a billionaire is a yardstick for self-worth, and unattainable goals can give us a false sense of responsibility, control and drive, what is the collateral damage to ourselves? As we chase a sense of perfectionism, and measure ourselves against big goals, how do we counteract the sense of self-loathing we can impinge upon ourselves when we fall short of the images we’re up holding? In this conversation, Jerry sits down with Sharon Salzberg, on her new book "Real Love: The Art of Mindful Connection" to discuss the ways in which love might be a counter-intuitive antidote to the ups and downs of entrepreneurship. We learn that as we cultivate a sense of love and compassion for ourselves in our ambitious pursuits and adventures in life, we bolster our resiliency to face life as it is.
