In this episode, I discuss the importance of self-respect over self-love. I explain that self-love can feel fluffy and hard to grasp, while self-respect provides concrete actions one can take to show care and kindness towards oneself. I also provide examples of embodying self-respect through taking care of one's health, pursuing meaningful goals, honouring one's experiences, and surrounding oneself with good men who can provide support and challenge. I encourage you to share this message of self-respect with the men in your lives who could benefit from it. As usual, I trust you'll get something from this episode. Musings on the nature of true love and how it looks in everyday life.
One of the toughest things is love. It's hard sometimes to love people. And of course, Jesus is our best example because God is love, right? In Matthew, he says to his disciples, “Don't let your love grow cold. In the last days, the love of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to the end will receive a crown of life.”Jesus demonstrated his love for us in this, that while we were still sinners, while we were still enemies of God, he died for us. He died for us.That's his nature. His nature is to love. That's the nature that I want. And his death is the only way that we can change and be made different, that we can be transformed.Because he died for us doesn't necessarily mean that he accepted all of our ways, but he certainly accepts us in spite of the fact that we are obviously sinners falling short of his glory.Jesus affirms us, but he doesn't affirm everything about us. He doesn't affirm everything that we do or every wicked thought that we have. Why does he affirm us?Because he created us, and we are his.Read John's blog post here.Huge thanks to Mike Bridgewater our engineer, JD Miller, our musical wizard, and Mt Gilead Church, our home to record.Thank YOU for listening. What does it mean to love your best friend? Is it the same as the kind of love you have for your spouse or romantic partner? How about the kind of love that God gives us, or that we can give God? These are questions that people have been asking in the Christian tradition for millennia. Eros is one of the Greek words for love that people have argued about. In this episode, we talk with medieval literature scholar Kathryn Mogk Wagner about how people have defined eros, from Plato, to C.S. Lewis, to a recent conference podcast from pastor Robert Cunningham. This episode is part 1 of 3. __________ Timestamps 3:30 - What's important about the word “eros”? 4:15 - Eros in C.S. In this homily given at St Pat's on May 1, 2022, Fr. Mathias preaches about free speech and perennial attempts by those who resist Jesus to try to silence or censor Christian truth. Like the Sanhedrin who ordered the apostles to stop preaching Jesus in Acts of the Apostles, we too find people today who seem to resent the fact that the truth of God revealed to us by Jesus is spreading today. How are we to respond in this cultural moment in which Christians are bullied, harassed, marginalized, and even called names for simply teaching Christian truth? Fr Mathias offers two ways we can respond like the early Church in the face of just efforts to silence us.

John 19:25-27 Standing near the cross were Jesus’ mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary (the wife of Clopas), and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to her, Dear woman, here is your son. And he said to this disciple, Here is your mother. And from then on this disciple took her into his home. (NLT) When you’re having a bad day, you can either breakdown or bounce back. 1 John 2:5-6 But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus. (NLT) John 19:26-27 Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to her, Dear woman, here is your son. And he said to this disciple, Here is your mother.” And from then on this disciple took her into his home.” (NLT) John 1:27 Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you. (NLT) Jesus on his bad day could have focused on his pain – but he chose to show love to his family. John 1:12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave them the right to become children of God. (NLT) Love when you don’t’ feel like it. Matthew 22:37-39 Jesus replied, You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: Love your neighbor as yourself. (NLT) 1. WE LOVE BIG. we don’t fight back we love back. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. (NLT) 1 John 4:8 But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love (NLT) 1 Peter 4:8 Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins. (NLT) Romans 12:10 Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. (NLT) Ephesians 4:2 Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. (NLT) John 13:35 Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples. (NLT) 2. WE GIVE BACK. When you give back it will help you bounce back. John 3:16-17 For this is how God loved the world: He gave[a] his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. (NLT) Acts 20:35 And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive (NLT) Proverbs 11:25 The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed. (NLT) Helping others, helps you. Luke 10:37 The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy, Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same. (NLT) Your bounce back can come from helping others. 3. What's better than talking about love on the first episode of a near adult's mediocre podcast? We will be discussing the phases of having a crush and what I like to believe is a universal experience between all human beings. While I share embarrassing stories of myself, I hope y'all feel better about yourselves.

I wanted to catch up on his projects and offerings. And I was hoping for his ideas on how an ordinary gal like me could serve the community in these trying times. So we sat for a chat. I hope you enjoy the conversation + I hope you find a little motivation for serving in your little corner of the world. Oh, yeah. He also has some advice for humanity.

Believe in Me: Lyrics and vocals: Diane Stafford Musical composition: Ainsley Harris This episode takes you through the lyrics and the story behind the song. Listen to the chorus on Buzzsprout. Transcript: 0:09 - Anchor Ad, Greeting - Hello, everyone and welcome to another episode of an uplifting song each week. Have you ever felt like you were at the top of the world? And you were just doing everything right? And then all of a sudden everything takes a downturn and you don't know what happened. That's the state of mind I was in when I wrote this song called Believe In Me (God speaking). And we're going to share that today. Come on back. 0:46 Question of the Week - So according to Oxford Dictionary, believe means to accept something as true, feel sure of the truth of it. So today's song is about believing in God, or God saying to me Believe in me. I've known in life that if we believe something, we do it automatically. We get up out of bed and we stand on our feet because we believe that they're going to hold us up. And we sit in a chair because we believe it's going to hold our weight. So what would happen if we believed like God said that He's the one who loves us most? 2:04 - Song of the Week Intro - Ever since I wrote the song in about 2004/2005 I've been working really hard to believe and trust, have faith in the fact that God loves me. Because sometimes, I don't know about you, but sometimes we all can feel unlovable, or unloved. 2:26 - Not because the people around us don't love us or not because we're not lovable. Because of the lie that devil tells us and the remains of things that we experienced as children. So today, let's work on our belief system. 2:45 - And now for the song lyrics to Believe in Me. 2:47 - Verse 1- I know sometimes it's hard to love. I know sometimes it's hard to give your trust. But when fear overcomes you, and you're tempted to give in, just remember that There's really no fear in love. Because My perfect love casts out fear. 3:06 - Chorus- Believe in me. I'm the One who loves you most. Believe in me. I'm the One who died for you. Just believe in me. I'll meet you halfway if you try. If you just believe. I'll meet you halfway if you try. You just believe. 3:24 - Verse 2 - Things are not always what they seem. The trials that you bear don't mean that I don't really love you or that I have forsaken you. Just remember that I don't allow more than you can bear. 3:38 - Chorus 3:56 - Verse 3 - It doesn't matter what you've done. It doesn't matter what's been done to you. All it takes is the belief that I died on that cross for you. Then there's no need for guilt, shame or fear. My child be of good cheer. 4:13- Chorus 4:33 - Exposition - So the lyrics were born way before the music was added. I don't know about anybody else but my creative juices begin flowing when I'm in angst, and boy was that an angst-ridden time. My only child was away at college in another state. I was in business for myself and my booming profits had begun to take a hit due to the competition that decided to set itself up right beside me. 4:58 - My mom who lived with me at the time was just beginning to exhibit signs of Alzheimer's. So the strong kick-butt woman with whom I lived, began to become an uncertain shadow of herself right before my very eyes. 5:11 - I remember going out to my usual corner, setting up my book stand and waiting and waiting and waiting for my customers to show up. A few did and actually bought a few items. But at the end of five hours, I only had $50 to show for time spent out in the cold. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/diane-stafford/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/diane-stafford/support

This week Sam and Paddy do their first deep dive into the dating world. They normally talk with people who are already in committed relationships and married, but what about navigating the dating scene this day in age? Really, this conversation is a deep dive into self-love with their guest Jonathan Aslay. The Not So Perfect Couple knows that self-love is the key to success in any and all relationships and more...so they believe you're going to LOVE this episode as much as Jonathan knows about the topic itself. Jonathan is one of America's Leading Mid-Life Dating Coach and his passion and focus has expanded into a deeper, essential philosophy of what it truly means to LOVE. After losing his 19-year-old son Connor in 2018, Jonathon Aslay's grief led him on a soul-searching inner journey, where he became aware of an often-overlooked dimension of the dating conversation. He realized that the process of dating reveals the most common emotional health issue faced by many singles seeking a partner: a distressing lack of self-worth, self-regard, and self-love. Today, he is on a mission of encouraging both men and women to fully love themselves with a new book, "What The Heck Is Self-Love Anyway?"—packed with fun, engaging spiritual and personal growth practices—and his dynamic Mid-Life Love Mastery mentorship program, that inspires hundreds of people daily, around the world. This week's episode features a discussion about the new film about the organization Preemptive Love. Jeremy and Jessica started Preemptive Love Coalition during the middle of the Iraq War in in 2008. Over the past decade they have been a non-profit on the front lines, providing relief and serving and working for peace in conflict rich areas of Iraq, Iran, Libya, Syria, Palestine and Israel, Korea and at the Mexico/U.S. border. Recently a short documentary was released that features their story and the work they do. My friend Charity hosted a viewing event to share this film with our community. We sat down to chat about what stood out to us about this documentary and to encourage you all to take a half an hour this week and watch it for yourself. Preemptive Love is doing some tremendous work and we want people to know about it. First and foremost, watch this short film about Preemptive Love! And check out Preemptive Love's work, follow them on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
