In our latest episode, Andres Gonzalez, the vice president of community engagement and chief diversity officer at Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin, discusses how to be a catalyst for change and lifts Milwaukee as a place where organizations are intentionally investing in the community. Gonzalez also says that, too often, people in positions of power try to prescribe solutions to communities without first understanding their lived experiences and that this undermines trust. Finally, Gonzalez shares personal stories about what it was like being uprooted from his beloved home country of Puerto Rico to move with his family to Cleveland and how he supported his mom as she attempted to access health care with limited English skills.Episode Highlights11:31 - It's about building trust and understanding what's the lived experience in the community. So, again, we understand what is happening, what people are living through, and then we have a better insight and understanding of what we might be able to actually offer. 21:09 - Let's unpack the pledge. Let's understand what we're signing on to here and then let's make sure that we stay the course and that we are accountable, and also transparent about our journey and how we're either delivering or not on those efforts.33:31 - I oftentimes remind a lot of the folks that I'm mentoring because I'm actually right now in the face of my career where I can pay it forward, but I'm trying to build the next cadre or leaders that will probably pick up the mantle and run with it, and we'll continue this work forward.Connect with Tammy Belton-DavisLinkedInConnect with Andres GonzalezLinkedIn

Tools for facing adversity When teachers at Robert W. Coleman Elementary in Baltimore are struggling with a student's behavior, the educators have an alternative to detention. Instead, they can refer the student to meditation. The Holistic Life Foundation keeps three staff members in a “mindful moment room” ready to help a frustrated student with a 15-minute active listening, breathing exercises, or meditation session. Andres Gonzalez is the Director of Marketing and Communications for the Holistic Life Foundation. He says that in the elementary schools they work with, the teachers must refer the students, but in the high schools, the students can self-refer. Over time, their program becomes part of the school's culture, says Gonzalez. “The kids kind of know what they're getting into, and they want to be there.” The Holistic Life Foundation believes that students are sometimes going through something that's making their behavior a little off. It may be trouble at home or something internal, but either way, the students are screaming for attention, and they're screaming for help. “Instead of you punishing a kid for something, you probably don't even know what he's going through,” says Gonzalez. “Why don't we let the kid talk and give him tools that he can use in the future when he's faced with adversity, stress, or trauma.” Listen to Episode 219 of the Class Dismissed Podcast on iTunes to hear our full interview about replacing detention with meditation. Andres Gonzalez is the VP and Chief Diversity Officer Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin where he oversees a number of initiatives linked to advancing health equity. Our conversation focuses on the emerging organizational changes that health systems are making to link workforce diversity and talent development with quality of care for diverse populations. We discuss the value of breaking down those silos and how important it is for health equity to be integrated into quality of care. An important element of this work is how much Andres forged important collaborations among the leadership team, with employee resource groups and key community stakeholders who worked collaboratively and strategically together to address health inequities.

George Mumford’s deeply moving personal story is unforgettable. An aspiring basketball player at the University of Massachusetts (where he roomed with Dr. J, Julius Erving), injuries forced Mumford out of the game he loved. The medications that relieved the pain of his injuries also numbed him to the emptiness he felt without the game and eventually led him to heroin. After years of making meditation on and off the cushion the center of his life and getting clean, Mumford enrolled in Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program and collaborated with him to create the Inner-city Stress Reduction Clinic in the early nineties. When Michael Jordan left the Chicago Bulls to play baseball in 1993, the team was in crisis. Coach Phil Jackson, a long-time mindfulness practitioner, contacted Dr. Kabat-Zinn to find someone who could teach mindfulness techniques to the struggling team—someone who would have credibility and could speak the language of his players. Kabat-Zinn led Jackson to Mumford and their partnership began. Mumford has worked with Jackson and many of the teams he coached to become NBA champions. His roster of champion clients has since blossomed way beyond basketball to include corporate executives, Olympians, and athletes in many different sports. Special Guest: George Mumford.

Bessel van der Kolk MD spends his career studying how children and adults adapt to traumatic experiences, and has translated emerging findings from neuroscience and attachment research to develop and study a range of treatments for traumatic stress in children and adults. In 1984, he set up one of the first clinical/research centers in the US dedicated to study and treatment of traumatic stress in civilian populations, which has trained numerous researchers and clinicians specializing in the study and treatment of traumatic stress, and which has been continually funded to research the impact of traumatic stress and effective treatment interventions. He did the first studies on the effects of SSRIs on PTSD; was a member of the first neuroimaging team to investigate how trauma changes brain processes, and did the first research linking BPD and deliberate self-injury to trauma and neglect in early childhood. Much of his research has focused on how trauma has a different impact at different stages of development, and that disruptions in care-giving systems have additional deleterious effects that need to be addressed for effective intervention. In order to promote a deeper understanding of the impact of childhood trauma and to foster the development and execution of effective treatment interventions, he initiated the process that led to the establishment of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN), a Congressionally mandated initiative that now funds approximately 150 centers specializing in developing effective treatment interventions, and implementing them in a wide array of settings, from juvenile detention centers to tribal agencies, nationwide. He has focused on studying treatments that stabilize physiology, increase executive functioning and help traumatized individuals to feel fully alert to the present. This has included an NIMH funded study on EMDR and NCCAM funded study of yoga, and, in recent years, the study of neurofeedback to investigate whether attentional and perceptual systems (and the neural tracks responsible for them) can be altered by changing EEG patterns. His efforts resulted in the establishment of Trauma Center that consisted of a well-trained clinical team specializing in the treatment of children and adults with histories of child maltreatment, that applied treatment models that are widely taught and implemented nationwide, a research lab that studied the effects of neurofeedback and MDMA on behavior, mood, and executive functioning, and numerous trainings nationwide to a variety of mental health professional, educators, parent groups, policy makers, and law enforcement personnel. "Personally in ten years I see mindfulness implemented in every aspect of life -- whether it's school -- like a school will have like a mindful moment at the beginning of the day and at the end of the day and have alternative suspension rooms where kids de-escalate themselves. It would be cool if you know every business started their day off with the practice. I'm not saying that it's definitely going to get there, but you know I can have high hopes and be optimistic." Special Guests: Ali Smith, Andres Gonzalez, and Atman Smith.

Sharon sits down with Ali Smith, Andy Gonzalez and Atman Smith of the Holistic Life Foundation at the JCC Manhattan to talk about their work bringing mindfulness and yoga to inner city youth in their hometown of Baltimore, MD. The Holistic Life Foundation has been serving Baltimore’s underserved communities since 2001 with high quality programming focusing on yoga, holistic health, environmental advocacy and education, sustainability, oneness, and interconnectedness. In this episode of The Metta Hour, Sharon talks with the HLF about how they began this inspiring work, and it’s expansion in their community after 15 years. Show Notes: 00:55 – Sharon jokes about feeling like her life is kind of like “mercury in retrograde” at the moment. She welcomes her audience and introduces her guests Ali Smith, Andy Gonzalez and Atman Smith, founders of the Holistic Life Foundation (HLF). 3:50 – Ali tells about their struggles growing up in the streets of Baltimore. The Smith brothers were raised vegan with yogas and mindfulness. This created a unique dichotomy that the two worked to keep secret from those who would shun them for it. Their practice faded into their teenage years, but was reignited in college where they meet co-founder Andres Gonzalez. After college the three spent their time reading on spiritual practice, meditating, and working on personal growth. 14:53 – Atman shares the story of HLF and their first group of “problem children”. How introducing those kids to the same practices they learned had a dramatic effect. The project grew beyond expectation. Growing from 25 to over 125 kids in one school the program has continued to expand in scope reaching over 5000 students in 15 schools. 19:30 – Beyond reaching out to inner city youth, HLF works with all underserved communities in Baltimore. HLF goes to drug rehab, mental health facilities, and elderly homes to bring them mindfulness practices to help deal with their situation. 21:00 – In schools HLF developed an alternative suspension program called the “Mindful Moment”. A room where kids are sent to calm down and reflect on their actions. They practice breath-work, stretch, and are given time to meditate and reflect. They come out of the room calm and ready to work. 28:00 – Sharon asks the brothers about the trauma that they are helping others overcome. The topic of undiagnosed PTSD in their community is discussed. How they learned to address the trauma affecting their students. Their own experiences on the streets and witnessing the hardship of others. 37:30 – How does love figure into changing things in such harsh circumstances? Atman and Ali return home in the heart of the Baltimore riots and lead their neighbors in meditation and rally them through the clean up effort. Reminding everyone that spreading the love and compassion can make the difference. 49:30 – Sharon turns the floor over to her audience who ask about HLF’s relationship with local churches, spreading HLF throughout the country, maintaining a personal practice, and more 1:17:00 – Atman leads a two minute guided meditation. This breathing meditation is a favorite of his kids because it gives them enough space to to relax, but enough guidance to keep their minds from wandering.
