Mindfulness meditation, which involves becoming aware of the breath in the present moment, has been a core part of Eastern contemplative practices for thousands of years. Over recent decades however, it's ‘exploded' throughout the West as scientists have sought to prove the physical and mental benefits of regular practice - like feeling calmer, less stressed and feeling better able to manage emotions. This week we look at some of the more surprising places where these simple techniques are having a big impact. In Kenya, we learn about the ‘mindfulness revolution' that took place in a men's high security prison outside Nairobi after a group of inmates and guards were taught mindfulness techniques in 2015. They soon started teaching each other and ten years later it's spread to prisons throughout the country and beyond. And we visit Baltimore in the US, where a non-profit organisation has been teaching mindfulness and yoga in inner city schools for over twenty years, giving children growing up with violence and deprivation the tools to manage their emotions and heal trauma.People Fixing The World from the BBC is about brilliant solutions to the world's problems. Tools for facing adversity When teachers at Robert W. Coleman Elementary in Baltimore are struggling with a student's behavior, the educators have an alternative to detention. Instead, they can refer the student to meditation. The Holistic Life Foundation keeps three staff members in a “mindful moment room” ready to help a frustrated student with a 15-minute active listening, breathing exercises, or meditation session. Andres Gonzalez is the Director of Marketing and Communications for the Holistic Life Foundation. He says that in the elementary schools they work with, the teachers must refer the students, but in the high schools, the students can self-refer. Over time, their program becomes part of the school's culture, says Gonzalez. “The kids kind of know what they're getting into, and they want to be there.” The Holistic Life Foundation believes that students are sometimes going through something that's making their behavior a little off. It may be trouble at home or something internal, but either way, the students are screaming for attention, and they're screaming for help. “Instead of you punishing a kid for something, you probably don't even know what he's going through,” says Gonzalez. “Why don't we let the kid talk and give him tools that he can use in the future when he's faced with adversity, stress, or trauma.” Listen to Episode 219 of the Class Dismissed Podcast on iTunes to hear our full interview about replacing detention with meditation. George Mumford’s deeply moving personal story is unforgettable. An aspiring basketball player at the University of Massachusetts (where he roomed with Dr. J, Julius Erving), injuries forced Mumford out of the game he loved. The medications that relieved the pain of his injuries also numbed him to the emptiness he felt without the game and eventually led him to heroin. After years of making meditation on and off the cushion the center of his life and getting clean, Mumford enrolled in Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program and collaborated with him to create the Inner-city Stress Reduction Clinic in the early nineties. When Michael Jordan left the Chicago Bulls to play baseball in 1993, the team was in crisis. Coach Phil Jackson, a long-time mindfulness practitioner, contacted Dr. Kabat-Zinn to find someone who could teach mindfulness techniques to the struggling team—someone who would have credibility and could speak the language of his players. Kabat-Zinn led Jackson to Mumford and their partnership began. Mumford has worked with Jackson and many of the teams he coached to become NBA champions. His roster of champion clients has since blossomed way beyond basketball to include corporate executives, Olympians, and athletes in many different sports. Special Guest: George Mumford.

It's not an adults only tool, and in fact, it can be quite exhilarating to teach kids about the power they have over their own body and nervous systems. In this episode, I was joined by Atman Smith, co-founder of the Holistic Life Foundation to talk about how parents can help their children regulate their anxiety through breathwork. We covered so much in this episode including tips for getting grounded, using mirroring to empower children and what NOT to do when your kid is having a breakdown (and actionable advice to implement instead).    Inside this episode, Atman shares: How Atman grew up and how that shaped his path His breathwork journey and how he's bringing breathwork to kids Tips for getting present and grounded  The incredible transformations that can take place through breathwork How mirroring empowers kids Why it's important to teach kids these tools The worst thing parents can do when kids are having a tantrum His thoughts on meditation vs. breathwork when first getting started   For full show notes, resources and links: https://www.hungryforhappiness.com/episode-195   Join the Pause Breathwork Facilitator Training today and become an expert-level breathwork facilitator! 2020 Election Cybersecurity (0:33)Guest: Eric Jensen, JD, Professor of International Law, BYU J. Reuben Clark Law SchoolA year from now, President Trump will be celebrating a second term, or someone else will have been elected to replace him. Will Russia attempt to meddle in the 2020 election like it did in 2016? How secure will our electronic voting machines be? E-bikes in National Parks (20:50)Guest: Kristen Brengel, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs at the National Parks Conservation AssociationThe fastest growing bicycle type in the US right now is the electric bicycle. I actually didn't know this was a widespread thing, but apparently Boomers, in particular, are buying them at a fast clip. E-bikes are not scooters or motorcycles. Usually you have to pedal to engage the motor, which gives you a boost so you can go further or tackle trails that'd be impossible for you, otherwise. And speaking of trails, e-bikes are officially allowed in National Parks wherever regular bikes are. That's a new change in the last few months, as a result of an order from the Secretary of the Interior. Conservation groups have come concerns. Screen Time Doesn't Account for the Rises in Depression and Anxiety in Teenagers (38:08)Guest: Sarah Coyne, Professor of Family Life at Brigham Young UniversityYou may have heard that spending so much time on social media is making teenagers anxious and depressed. If you're the parent of a “screenager” addicted to a smart phone, I'm sure you've worried about this. Well, maybe worry a bit less. An eight-year study of teenagers led by BYU family life professor Sarah Coyne finds no evidence that time spent on social media is “destroying a generation.” The Holistic Life Foundation Teaches Schools to Replace Detention with Meditation (51:09)Guest: Ali Smith, Executive Director of the Holistic Life FoundationStudents who disrupt class or get into fights are usually sent to detention, but some schools in Baltimore are using a different technique--meditation. They've teamed up with a non-profit called the Holistic Life Foundation that runs mindfulness programs to help bring calmness into the classroom. And it seems to be working—these schools have lower suspensions and higher grades. Caring Moms May Prevent Teen Dating Abuse (1:05:32)Guest: Jennifer Livingston, PhD, Associate Professor, School of Nursing at the University at BuffaloThere's a cycle of conflict that's pretty well documented –if a teenager grows up in a house where parents fight a lot, that teen is more likely to experience abuse in their own dating relationships. But some young people manage to break the cycle. How? University at Buffalo researcher Jennifer Livingston has found that the relationship a teenager has with his or her mom is a particularly important buffer against household conflict.
