No Common Ground: Confederate Monuments and the Ongoing Fight for Racial Justice

When it comes to Confederate monuments, there is no common ground. Polarizing debates over their meaning have intensified into legislative maneuvering to preserve the statues, legal battles to remove them, and rowdy crowds taking matters into their own hands. These conflicts have raged for well over a century—but they've never been as intense as they are today. In No Common Ground: Confederate Monuments and the Ongoing Fight for Racial Justice (UNC Press, 2021), Dr. Karen L. Cox offers an eye-opening narrative of the efforts to raise, preserve, protest, and remove Confederate monuments. Dr. Cox depicts what these statues meant to those who erected them and how a movement arose to force a reckoning. She shows the forces that drove white southerners to construct beacons of white supremacy, as well as the ways that anti-monument sentiment, largely stifled during the Jim Crow era, returned with the civil rights movement and gathered momentum in the decades after the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Monument defenders responded with gerrymandering and "heritage" laws intended to block efforts to remove these statues, but hard as they worked to preserve the Lost Cause vision of southern history, civil rights activists, Black elected officials, and movements of ordinary people fought harder to take the story back. Timely, accessible, and essential, No Common Ground is the story of the seemingly invincible stone sentinels that are just beginning to fall from their pedestals. Our guest is: Dr. Karen L. Cox, who is professor emeritus of history at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Her other books include Dreaming of Dixie: How the South Was Created in American Popular Culture and Dixie's Daughters: The United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Preservation of Confederate Culture. Our host is: Dr. Christina Gessler, who works as a developmental editor for scholars, and is the producer of the Academic Life podcast. Gangnam is an exclusive zone of privilege and wealth that has lured South Korean pop culture industries since the 1980s and fueled the aspirations of Seoul's middle class, producing in its wake the “dialectical images” of the modern city described by Walter Benjamin: sweet dreams and nightmares, visions of heaven and hell, scenes of spectacular rises and great falls.  In Polarizing Dreams: Gangnam and Popular Culture in Globalizing Korea (University of Hawai‘i Press, 2024), Pil Ho Kim weaves together dissident poetry and protest songs from the 1980s, B-rated adult films, tour bus disco music, obscure early works by famous authors and filmmakers, interviews with sex workers and urban entrepreneurs, and other sources to show how Gangnam is at the heart of Korea's global-polarization. "I didn't hit a rock bottom. I just got tired of digging…Tired of digging myself out of messes.” Lane Kiffin, Head Coach Ole Miss Football  It's a football Friday episode with the fellas as Ryan, Channing and Fred chat with one of the most polarizing figures in college sports, Coach Lane Kiffin, who's sharp wit fans have come to expect, but this conversation reveals a side of him that few get to see, full of humility, gratitude and tremendous respect for the men who helped shape his career from Nick Saban to Pete Caroll to most important his father, the late Monte Kiffin. From once being the NFL's youngest head coach at just 31, to public scrutiny in his hirings and firings to now becoming the Head man at Ole Miss football, Kiffin reflects on the peaks and pitfalls of a career that's seen everything from sideline success to very significant setbacks. Now older, wiser, and grounded in both his personal life and his coaching philosophy, Kiffin opens up about the man he's become, both for himself, his players and children. He talks candidly about getting sober, becoming a more present father, and rebuilding his life off the field, explaining how change didn't come from a breakdown, but from a decision to be better. Losing his father, his life-long hero, is a something Coach couldn't measure the impact one person could have on so many people and so many aspects of life until he had time to let his legacy sit in and guide him through the next phase of his life. The guys ask Kiffin about the ever-changing landscape of college football, NIL, the transfer portal, and what it takes to keep a team together when everything around it is constantly shifting. Kiffin isn't shy about the challenges, but he's also clear-eyed about what matters most, connection and relationships with these young men. He speaks on his Quarterback, a top NFL Draft prospect, Jaxson Dart and why any of the 32 teams isn't just getting a talented stud on the field but a massive star in everyday. Reflecting on his time working with mentors, Pete Carroll and Nick Saban, Lane offers a rare look into what shaped his football mind and how getting fired from USC, the job he once idolized, became a major pivot, forcing him to grow not just as a coach, but as a human. The guys go beyond X's and O's. From laughing about yoga poses and NIL drama to unpacking grief, fatherhood, and the need for emotional sobriety, Kiffin shows that vulnerability is not weakness it's evolution... “You don't have to figure it out forever. You just have to do it today,” he says. Getting prepped for the 2025 season after Spring ball, Coach Kiffin is already scheming, tweeting and quietly building something powerful in Oxford. He may not be calling Cover 2 like his dad, but he's got a few plays dialed up you won't see coming on this episode of the Pivot. Don't forget to like and comment as you follow us on YouTube! With that we go over Florida's run and talk about our disappointment in Duke while asking ourselves if this year's 'money' bracket was actually worse than last year's monstrosity. Moving on to the NFL we take a look at some of the most recent rumors surrounding the NFL Draft. From the Browns leaning towards Travis Hunter to Shedeur Sanders potentially sliding down the board, we touch on every recent report prior to April 24th's draft. We then look at some of the most polarizing prospects in this year's class, focusing mainly on Alabama's Jalen Milroe who has seen his stock go back up in recent days. Finally, we go over some of the positives and negatives in selecting Louisville's Tyler Shough while also glancing at Mel Kiper's final mock draft. Enjoy!
