There was a post on Reddit about how RPGers read rulebooks for new RPGs before they ran a session. The answers at first were vey like minded. People stating that they read the rulebook completely. From reading it once to reading the rulebook from cover to cover multple times. Saul was a bit shocked at reading these posts since he had never read a RPG Rulebook that way. As Saul read more he found posts more aligned with his style of reading a rulebook. If you consider jumping from section to section. Jolene and Saul discussed this topic and decided it was a good one for an episode. Jolene read a post from a father of three young daughters who he wanted to run a roleplaying game for but one daughter was very adverse to combat and violence. Jolene talked to Saul about the post and they discussed the various games they had run for very young and new RPGers. When their son was young, Saul regularly ran games at local con for kids. From D&D to Gamma World, Saul ran "kids" games at con for several years. Jolene has run games for her son and his friends at home. She also has run games at local Northern California game cons. Though Saul ran more traditional RPGs for Kids at local Cons he has toned down the violence and used alternatives to combat in many of his kids and adult games. From their discussion of how they ran games for kids and the Reddit Posting dad's predicament they decided to do an episode on the subject. Jolene asked Saul, "What do you think the most played character class is?" Saul immediately said, "Fighter." Jolene asked how he came up with that guess. A discussion followed about the most popular character type and why people like to play Fighters. Saul and Jolene decided to record an episode about this topic. Why are "Fighters" so popular? Saul and Jolene say their favorite class in most games no matter the genre is a sorcerer or wizard. Yet fighters are the most played character type according to 2020 D&D Beyond data that was published. For many reasons the Fighter in any genre seems to hold a lot of appeal. The D&D, to Feng Shui, to Shadowrun the down and dirty fighter types are the character type of choice for many RPGers. Saul and Jolene discuss why this might be in this week's episode. Acomi and Turk182 discuss the recent announcement by Wizards of the Coast (WOTC), maker of the Magic the Gathering card game and owner of the Dungeons & Dragons licence, to fight systemic racism in the fantasy worlds. They plan on doing this by removing racial lore, attributes, and alignments from the coming 6th Edition. No longer will Orcs be carnivorous, unkempt, beasts that live to fight and would eat a human raw if it took more than five minutes to cook them. Now, they can be peaceful, vegan, fat-free soap makers that travel from town to town preaching love and meditation. Dwarves are no longer drunks with battleaxes. Trolls are no longer greedy. Centaurs are normally endowed. Characters will not be bound by their history and culture and geographic location. Festivals where attendees show up in Drow-face will be against the law. Leash laws no longer apply to manticores. And, RPGers will find a different system. The changes WOTC is enforcing are uncalled for. Meaning nobody called for this! RPGs give players the freedom to play any race, class, and alignment as they see fit. Removing the lore destroys character traits, rips the heart out of the worlds, and reduces everything to a grey palette where everyone is potentially equal, and removes incentive to play and race but human. Acomi and Turk discuss why addressing real life issues in a fantasy world is ridiculous and unnecessary. Not to mention making a mockery of true racial issues. #OMTWF #Acomi #Turk182 #KorovaEntertainment #Wizards #WizardsoftheCoast #WOTC #DnD #GaryGygax #roleplay #RPG #HelmofDisintegration #Paladin #BlackGuy Follow Acomi on Twitter at @AcomiDraws and on Instagram at AcomiDraws. Season 1 of the Canon Cantina was focused on exploring the journey of Luke Skywalker through both Canon and Legends materials. We sought to explore the question "who IS Luke Skywalker?" by comparing the two different storylines in the time leading up to Episode IX. Now that the Skywalker Saga is complete, we have expanded the scope of the show beyond Luke Skywalker. Everything after our Force Awakens-style soft reboot can be found in Season 2. Cheers, and may the Force be with you! ___________________________________ This is it - the culmination of the Thrawn trilogy! Find out how the premier Legends story concludes, and tune in for our discussion about Luke's growth by the time the series ends. Will you side with Mike who levels some criticisms against this sacred trilogy, or with Jesse who thinks it still stands up almost 30 years later? We also talk about new updated to Battlefront II - Mike WANTS microtransactions back! - and the first 3 episodes of Star Wars: Resistance. If you'd like to submit questions or topics to the show in addition to chatting with us, join the Discord server at https://discord.gg/wuCCuv. Next week we'll release our Episode VIII: The Last Jedi commentary, and will return with canon Marvel comics coverage in two weeks. ____________________________ Join Star Wars fanatics, Mike and Jesse each episode as we breakdown the character & development of Luke Skywalker throughout both Legends and the Disney canon. If you're a long time role player or if you have a friend who would rather spend their evening playing D&D than a new board game you bring over, we have six games this week that might bridge that gap. Before diving into the feature, we kick things off with our question of the week, asking you, the listeners, "What's the weirdest way and least expected strategy with which you've ever won a game?" For our acquisition disorders this week, Anthony looks at Periodic: A Game of the Elements, a new science game from Genius Games on Kickstarter, and Chris looks at Arthur, the first expansion for Stefan Feld's Merlin. At the table this week, Anthony reviews Dwar7es Winter and Archmage, and Chris looks at Whistle Stop and its expansion, Rocky Mountains. Finally, in our feature, we share six games you should check out if you're a big fan of RPGs or if you're trying to convert wayward friends to the board game fold. Question of the Week: 4:39 Acquisition Disorders: 8:30 Dwar7es Winter Review: 13:45 Archmage Review: 19:17 Whistle Stop w/ Expansion Review: 24:17 Best Board Games for RPGers: 33:08 If you haven’t yet, be sure to connect with us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/boardgamersanonymous), Twitter (http://twitter.com/bgapodcast), and on our website (www.boardgamersanonymous.com). In a slightly shorter episode we look at Roll Player. First we look at some games we've played : Railroad Revolution Letters from Whitechapel Gold Raiders Fox in the Forest We then move on to Roll Player. We've got 2 RPGers in the group, so does the theme sway them? For the other 2 who are not roll players, is there enough in the game to keep them interested? Can an aspect of the game, which is not the games fault, affect the score? Sure it can, listen to find out!
Episode 23 – Urban Fantasy & Unknown Armies (a.k.a. Urban Armies) Urban fantasy seems like a big old piece of the genre, so we dig around in it a bit before taking an in depth look at our favourite example; Unknown Armies. With a 3rd edition on its way, we can look back fondly on the days before ubiquitous WiFi and iPhones, when the occult underground was a dangerous yet alluring playground for RPGers. There may be six ways to avoid a fight, but zero ways to avoid your enjoyment of this cast from your genial hosts, Baz and Gaz. If you like what you hear and want to boss us about, why not become a Patreon and send us more topics you want us to explore?
In episode 87 the gang gets down and dirty with a great worker placement game called The Ancient World! Then they take a look back at Euphoria one year later. Tony T gives his gaming news roundup while the rabble gives their two cents. We talk about board game hooks, innovation and gimmicks. The show ends with a discussion about an age old problem that always plagues RPGers, how to make your first session great for the players.
