In this episode of the TopSoil Podcast, Mitchell and Rory sit down to discuss sustainability from a global perspective. Their conversation is specifically tailored around beef and livestock production which has taken a bad wrap when it comes to sustainability. However, animal agriculture can play a vital role in improving the sustainability of the world driven by agriculture. Listen in for a new perspective outside of the row crop space and tune in to hear what is happening from the global ag industry perspective. There is arguably more land under the management of people producing beef, sheep, and goats than under any other industry. Having access to all these people and the land they manage provides an opportunity to impact a significant percentage of the world's land area. Creating the incentives to encourage and reward climate friendly and nature positive livestock management practices is both one of the greatest challenges and largest opportunities to limit global warming. The Global Roundtable on Sustainable Beef (https://grsbeef.org/) has grown to include 24 countries across 12 Roundtables. In 2021 GRSB set three goals, to reduce the net global warming impact of beef by 30% by 2030 on the pathway to climate neutrality, to become a net positive contributor to nature by 2030, and on animal welfare, to Provide cattle with an environment in which they can thrive. GRSB is now adding a fourth goal focusing on the social role of beef production from both the producer side and more broadly across society. Livestock have a key role in the maintenance of landscape, provision of nutrition, employment, religious and cultural events, and social status. This is especially relevant in many arid and lower income countries where livestock frequently is a cornerstone of food production and rural economies. When the precursor to the GRSB first met in Denver in 2010 many people at the meeting had never sat in a room together. The meeting included a number of fairly beefy security guards because Ruaraidh was concerned things may get heated. It was a question of trust. As people continued to meet over the next 10-12 years and got to know each other trust was built, especially as people realized they all wanted to head in the same direction, and they could actually learn from each other.Methane emission is something that the industry has the ability to limit. Breeding companies are currently looking into using genetics to limit methane emission, improved grazing management also has a big role to play.I recently caught up with Ruaraidh to hear more about his work. You can listen to his conversation here.
Some young people really take to the sailing part of the Trust. That's what happened with Emily. Being registered blind has impacted her life, she says, but she deals with it by throwing herself into a whole load of activities to prove to everyone she can still do them.Emily recently completed her RYA Day Skipper course and will be joining the Trust for Round the Island Race this year. Two of the Trust's skippers who helped Emily along the way join the conversation too. Andy was on Emily's most recent trip and spoke to her about going for her Day Skipper. Ruaraidh was on the same trip and it was at his London School of Sailing that she took the course. With Emily also hooked on dinghy sailing and training for Blind GB match racing, we just had to invite her on to talk about her achievements.Support her dad Ian as he takes on the Largs to Cowes Brighter Futures Cycle Challenge in June: https://largs-to-cowes.blackbaud-sites.com/
Ep 375 - Beef Industry's Commitment to Carbon Reduction Guest: Ruaraidh Petre The beef industry is feeling the heat. That heat is the ongoing campaign directed at cattle as a negative force upon the environment and in particular climate. While the industry in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and North America is already striving to reduce the environmental impact of cows, the rest of the world is also getting on-side. The Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef is a worldwide organization that has set an ambitious 30% greenhouse gas reduction target through responsible and innovative agricultural practices, coupled with the use of new technology. Ruaraidh Petre, the Executive Director of GRSB says, “Paramount in our mission is animal health and welfare. Cattle require an environment in which they can thrive.” Essential elements in ensuring the industry meets its targets are grassland management and herd size. Professor Myles Allen, an IPCC climate scientist and professor at Oxford University says, “A stable herd size is one that is not adding new methane and therefore has a minimal impact and, more interestingly, if the herd size declines, the impact on climate will actually be a reduction in global temperatures.” For the Global Roundtable, it says that is just one element of its comprehensive plan to address climate and environment. Petre says, “Many producers and farmers are already net positive contributors to nature and for those that need assistance in making positive changes, the GRSB offers financing, and developmental support.” We invited Ruariaidh Petre to join us from Nelson, New Zealand for a Conversation That Matters about the global effort underway to ensure cattle are a sustainable nutritional and environmental part of the world food supply. Jeroen met Rory Peter back in 2009 when he was working as a consultant with Advance. Now, he is the Executive Director of the Global Roundtable on Sustainable Beef. And that allows for an interesting discussion on the sustainability challenges of animal proteins. Halving the livestock in the Netherlands, the permafrost in Siberia or lab-meat as a potential alternative to animal protein, everything is up for debate in this podcast.
It's NZ AgriFood Week and speaking this Thursday at the AgResearch: Our Food Our Future event, is the executive director on the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef.

I want to interview everyday people that I find extraordinary. Not the celebrities we often hear interviewed who, following the death of a parent, went on to make millions setting up a start-up of some kind or another. But ordinary, relatable people. My friends. Losing a parent is surely one of the hardest things any of us will have to deal with in life. And yet, it is one we will all experience at some point. I want to talk to those who experienced this all too soon. Those who lost a parent in their early formative years. How has it changed them? What are they doing now? And most importantly what was the best thing their friends or family said to them during this time? How should we react on hearing a great friend of ours has suffered such a loss? There isn’t a guide book for this and many feel at a loss as to know how to react. Should I encourage them to talk about it? Or would they rather speak about anything but it? How do I not treat them differently whilst showing them that they have my full support? In short what helped and what didn’t help them? I am not coming at this from the angle of a psychologist. And I understand the incredibly sensitive and personal nature of the interview. I am approaching this from the angle of a friend trying to encourage the interviewee to share their experiences and give some helpful advice both to those going through the same thing and those trying to help their friends. In this weeks episode I interview my own Dad. We explore (for the first time!) the challenges he faced losing his father so young, how it differed to losing his mother 20 years later, and how it may have affected the way he has acted as a parent himself.
