This system, adopted by Sustainable Beef LLC, is set to transform the industry by offering competitive premiums for upper two-thirds Choice carcasses, regardless of hide color. Angus, Red Angus & Charolais Cross Cattle Receive Same Premium Tom Brink, RAAA CEO, announced that Sustainable Beef LLC, opening in April 2025 in North Platte, Nebraska, will implement a color-blind grid system, equally rewarding Red Angus, Black Angus, and smoky cattle. “This system levels the feeder calf market, allowing feedlots to confidently invest in Red Angus and black-hided cattle, knowing both will qualify for top premiums,” Brink said. Kelly Smith, RAAA Director of Commercial Marketing, emphasized RAAA's efforts to connect Red Angus producers with feedlots through its feeder cattle network. He highlighted that FCCP-tagged cattle will meet the Angus label's genetic verification standards, ensuring seamless access to premium marketing opportunities. Mark Nelson, Sustainable Beef's Director of Cattle Procurement, reinforced the company's commitment to sustainability and producer profitability. Sustainable Beef will provide an exceptional work environment and favor moderate carcass sizes, which naturally benefits Red Angus genetics. The RAAA-Sustainable Beef collaboration represents a significant step forward in ensuring equitable market opportunities for all quality cattle. This initiative will drive profitability for producers while delivering high-quality beef to consumers. For more details, visit RedAngus.org. Cattle Industry News JBS Sees Strong Demand Despite Challenges In The U.S. Cattle Cycle According to JBS executives, JBS expects a more challenging US cattle supply scenario in 2025 compared to last year, when strong beef consumption and initiatives to improve commercial and operational efficiencies contributed to the performance of the US beef business unit. Executives commented saying that the U.S. cattle cycle will likely be more challenging this year, regardless of the speed of herd replacement, specifically saying that JBS Beef North America's margins still have room to improve by 1% to 1.5% in 2025 due to the company's initiatives to improve commercial and operational efficiencies. Robust demand continues to support the company's investments in expanding its US meat processing and prepared food facilities. In February, JBS announced $200 million in investments to expand its beef production facilities in Cactus, Texas, and Greeley, Colo. In the other regions where JBS operates, demand for all animal proteins also remains strong. While avian influenza had already been detected in cattle and other mammals, including in the United States, the infection of a sheep will increase concern over the potential impact of the disease's spread. There have been cases among humans which have ranged in severity from no symptoms to, in rare cases, death. But there has not yet been any confirmed transmission between humans. The virus is spread through contact with infected birds or other species, including through touching their droppings and bedding, although people can also catch the virus by killing or preparing infected poultry for cooking. Avian flu has been detected in cattle in the United States, with the Centers for Disease Control reporting 41 cases and 989 dairy herds affected as of last Friday. Experts say the risk of avian flu to the general public is very low. Mexico Pushing For More Domestic Pork Facing Trade War Mexico has become a huge importer of U.S. pork, but the government in Mexico City is now talking about self-sufficiency as trade tensions with Washington are about to intensify. In a recent meeting with domestic producers, the Mexican Agriculture Minister pointed out that the country's own pork sector only meets 53% of demand. Imports last year reached 1.4 million metric tons, a large majority from the neighboring United States. President Donald Trump, in early February, threatened 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada, imposed taxes on large numbers of imports from both countries in early March and has vowed to tariff most other products on April 2. Canada has already retaliated against some U.S. products including chicken, while Mexico is poised to impose tariffs on exports including meats if the United States carries out its threat next week.  Pork demand has soared as Mexico has become more affluent. Last year, 38% of U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports went to Mexico. By value, exports to Mexico jumped 10% in 2024 to nearly $2.6 billion, more than the next two markets, China/Hong Kong and Japan combined. The value of U.S. pork exports to Mexico has more than doubled from $1.15 billion in 2020, and the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service projected further growth this year before trade policy disruptions. Sustainable Beef Plant Comes To Nebraska A crowd estimated at more than 1,200 people witnessed a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a $400-million cattle processing plant this week in North Platte, Neb., a project that Sustainable Beef LLC originally announced in 2021. The new facility is expected to provide about 850 jobs and expand beef processing capacity in the area in addition to establishing more long-term sustainable growth for local cattle producers and family farms. The facility is expected to process an estimated 1,500 head per day, according to Sustainable Beef officials.  We will have more on Sustainable Beef LLC and its new fed cattle grid pricing system with Red Angus Cattle on next week's program.   RanchChannel.Com Now Has The Futures Markets & New Listings Futures Markets RanchChannel.com now has futures markets at your fingertips!  Feeder Cattle, Live Cattle, Corn, Wheat, Soybeans, Soybean Oil, Milk Class IV, and Ethanol.  Information is provided by DTN and market information may be delayed by as much as 10 minutes.  Click Here for more information! The Co-op is launching a new scheme to encourage its beef producers to cut emissions. The Beef Sustainability Pilot, which will run for two years, will pay farmers who reduce the carbon footprint of the beef they rear. It'll initially cover up to10% of the beef supplied and could mean an extra payment to farmers of between 6 and 12p per kilo. The supermarket says the data will form part of its plans to be net zero by 2040.Since we left the EU, different agricultural policies are being developed and introduced at different speeds in all four nations of the UK. They are all, in their own ways, shifting towards rewarding farmers for benefiting the environment, rather than the old EU system which largely paid farmers based on the amount of land they farmed. We speak to four farmers from around the UK who are all part of the Nature Friendly Farming Network, a group "working to mainstream nature-friendly farming as the most sustainable way of producing food" to hear their views on the current policy landscape, and whether they're able to have an influence on the new schemes. All week we've been talking about family farms - the joys and the challenges of running a business with your closest relatives. For the younger generation taking over the business can be tricky, doubly so when it happens suddenly and unexpectedly, which is what happened to the Pollock family who farm in Fife. Claire Pollock now runs the farm while her mum and sister run the on site farm shop. Presenter = Charlotte Smith Producer = Rebecca Rooney

We're giving away up to five books per episode! Terms we discuss in this episode:Scope: How companies categorize their emissions. Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions from owned or controlled sources, sometimes called “operational emissions.” This includes reducing emissions from facilities or vehicles owned by an organization.Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions from electricity, heating, cooling, or steam purchased by an organization. (For additional guidance on Scopes 1 and 2, see the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency' website.)Scope 3 emissions are all indirect emissions (that aren't included in Scope 2) in an organization's value chain. These are sometimes called “supply chain emissions.” Scope 3 emissions include both upstream emissions (from production processes) and downstream emissions (consumer use of a certain product). With Jenny, we talk a lot about Scope 3 — in McDonald's case, the emissions from its supply chain and franchisees. Since franchisees make up 95% of McDonald's restaurants, scope 3 emissions are significant. Science-Based Targets (SBTs)SBTs provide a clearly-defined pathway for companies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help prevent the worst impacts of climate change. McDonald's uses SBTs. Absolute and Intensity TargetsThese are two ways to measure emissions reductions.Intensity Target: Emissions relative to some other factor, such as the number of employees or revenue. Intensity targets account for economic growth. For example, McDonald's could reduce the emissions per chicken nugget, while continuing to sell more happy meals each year.Absolute Target: An attempt to reduce all emissions, regardless of other factors. For example, an absolute target at McDonald's would be saying that no matter how many chicken nuggets they sell, McDonald's will reduce the amount of total emissions associated with chicken nuggets.Resources:Environmental Defense Fund Climate Corps program, where Jenny McColloch was a fellowMcDonald's 2021 Risk & Resiliency reportMcDonald's Climate StrategyMcDonald's Net Zero by 2050 AnnouncementGlobal Roundtable for Sustainable BeefU.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef Yesh Pavlik Slenk is Degrees' host. Everything we eat has a direct impact on the environment. Debbie Lyons-Blythe is a cattle rancher from Kansas and has been working on sustainability for years. She is the chairman elect of the US Roundtable for Sustainable Beef. Debbie highlights how beef is good for the environment. Cattle sequester carbon from land that cannot be used for anything besides grazing. She calls on dietitians to overcome the misinformation about meat - people have been bullied to believe that going vegan for a day will. This rancher also touches on concerns around early puberty and development. A mom herself, Debbie understands concerns about girls developing early and highlights the science that shows caloric intake has led to that. She shares the process of why hormones and antibiotics are used - and how your food is safe. She wants RDNs and consumers to know "Ranchers care! We spend our entire life doing the right thing for cattle and the land." Debbie works daily to help give people insight about how beef is really raised and finds all of the misinformation about methane, hormones, and antibiotics in beef disheartening. Ep 375 - Beef Industry's Commitment to Carbon Reduction  Guest: Ruaraidh Petre    The beef industry is feeling the heat. That heat is the ongoing campaign directed at cattle as a negative force upon the environment and in particular climate. While the industry in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and North America is already striving to reduce the environmental impact of cows, the rest of the world is also getting on-side.   The Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef is a worldwide organization that has set an ambitious 30% greenhouse gas reduction target through responsible and innovative agricultural practices, coupled with the use of new technology.  Ruaraidh Petre, the Executive Director of GRSB says, “Paramount in our mission is animal health and welfare. Cattle require an environment in which they can thrive.”   Essential elements in ensuring the industry meets its targets are grassland management and herd size. Professor Myles Allen, an IPCC climate scientist and professor at Oxford University says, “A stable herd size is one that is not adding new methane and therefore has a minimal impact and, more interestingly, if the herd size declines, the impact on climate will actually be a reduction in global temperatures.”   For the Global Roundtable, it says that is just one element of its comprehensive plan to address climate and environment. Petre says, “Many producers and farmers are already net positive contributors to nature and for those that need assistance in making positive changes, the GRSB offers financing, and developmental support.”   We invited Ruariaidh Petre to join us from Nelson, New Zealand for a Conversation That Matters about the global effort underway to ensure cattle are a sustainable nutritional and environmental part of the world food supply.
