Sound Waves is the official podcast of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is a national charity that empowers young people aged 8-24 to embrace their future after cancer. When treatment ends, the Trust’s work begins as, for many young people, picking up where they left off before their diagnosis isn’t possible. On Sound Waves, the Trust community comes together to discuss themes and spark conversations relevant to anyone impacted by cancer in young people. From mental health to staying safe in the sun, from survivor's guilt to reflecting on where life has taken people since their diagnosis. All the while sharing tales from the Trust, and all the life-long memories made together. Come aboard!

Sailing is lovely, but at the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, we want young people to feel better at the end of their time with us than they did at the start. That's what impact is. Joining us in this episode are Omar and Jess. Omar came on his first four-day sailing adventure with the Trust last year, and he tells us about the impact he felt across that week and afterwards when he went back home. Jess has been with the Trust for some time, she was first supported 11 years ago, and has since become a volunteer and makes up part of the Trust's Youth Advisory Group. She has seen impact happen across years of supporting young people who have returned for multiple trips. Also joining us is Karenza, the Trust's communications manager. The Trust aims to be open to everyone who is looking for support, and for some, that isn't a one-and-done thing. As young people feel more accepted, independent and optimistic, that might take place across their teenage years or into young adulthood. First up, 17-year-old Libby tells us about having been supported by the Trust since she was 10. She talks about why she keeps coming back and how her adventures with the Trust continue to provide her with what it is she needs and is looking for. Then Lucy, the Trust's Lead Return Trips Coordinator, gives an overview of why people come back, what the difference is between first time and return trips, what next year's new trips look like, and why young people not coming back is also fine too. Living through and beyond cancer takes time, changes shape, requires different things, and is completely unique to everyone. There are amazing people who donate to the Trust monthly. We call them Friends of the Trust. They provide long-term support to young people, which in turn leads to making a long-term difference to those young people's lives. We thought, wouldn't it be nice if a Friend of the Trust could sit down with someone who's benefitted from that long-term support, and who feels that Friends of the Trust have made a long-term difference to their life?So that's what you're about to hear. At the time of recording, Josh had been on three trips. Since then, he's completed his training to become a volunteer with the Trust. He spoke with Stuart, a Friend of the Trust who has been donating monthly since 2014. He is a generous person through and through and exceptionally good company. With this episode we hoped to communicate to Stuart the difference he was making, but we couldn't have imagined what the conversation turned out to be like. We hope you feel as privileged as we did to be part of this conversation, and that you enjoy the longest episode of Sound Waves yet. A shorter version of this conversation appears in this year's edition of the Trust's annual magazine, Inspire, which will be out in the next few weeks.

They may express it differently, they might not have the words to communicate how they're feeling, but it doesn't mean it's any less present. In this episode we talk about noticing ways under 13s display their mental health, what support there is out there, and the importance of listening, as part of Children's Mental Health Week.Joining us is Gavin Sterry, a mental health first aider and good friend of the Trust. His insights are eye-opening: from a cancer diagnosis to a national lockdown, a young person will be impacted by what's going on in their lives, no matter how young. Gavin signposts to a number of support services during the conversation, including:Childline - https://www.childline.org.uk/ Samaritans - https://www.samaritans.org/ Kooth - https://www.kooth.com/ Young Minds - https://youngminds.org.uk/

It's not every day you raise over £4.7m, but that's just what Lewis did when he was part of this year's Rickshaw Challenge for Children in Need. He returns to Sound Waves to talk about what it was all like, from having to cycle at home after someone in the crew contracted COVID-19, to bonding with his teammates over Zoom.Joining him is Pam, a regional grants officer at Children in Need and good friend of the Trust, who pulls back the curtain on how our invaluable partnership works. Holly from the Trust team joins too, whose role is linked with Children in Need's support. She's integral to piecing together everything needed to put young people in touch with the Trust so they can access the support they want and need. This is our final episode of 2020. Thank you so much to everyone who's checked out an episode and listened along since we launched Sound Waves in the spring. We'll be back in the new year. Until then, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

The Luke Gilbert Volunteer of the Year award was created to recognise when someone goes above and beyond to ensure young people in recovery from cancer have the support they need. The award was named for Luke Gilbert, a young man who sailed with the Trust while in recovery and who went on to become the kind of volunteer everyone loved and looked up to. It was set up in his name to remember him and his contributions, which will forever play a part in shaping the Trust as we continue to look to his example, embodying what it means to be an irreplaceable part of the Trust family.Joining host Scott this week are three of the four previous recipients of the Luke Gilbert Volunteer of the Year award, Paul, Rosa, and Alex. From the Trust team, Lorna joins them to give an overview of what volunteering has been like in 2020, and how things are shaping up for 2021. Rosie, who received the award for 2017, was unable to join the gang on this occasion, but we send out our love and look forward to her joining Sound Waves again in the future. While listening to their conversation, if you joined the Trust for any events this year or have listened to previous podcasts, keep in mind the volunteers you've come across in 2020. It would mean a lot to them if you put them forward for Volunteer of the Year, which you can do on the Trust's website here: https://www.ellenmacarthurcancertrust.org/volunteer-with-us/

Thank you. For making sure we were there to support young people throughout 2020. For ensuring we'll be there for them in 2021. For being there with us through the most difficult year the Trust has faced. Thank you.Host Scott is joined by Trust CEO Frank Fletcher, as well as Leanna, Morven, John, and Ed, who all planned to join us on trips this year. Instead, they were at the heart of the Trust's Virtual Summer, getting involved in all sorts of activities together while we were apart. It's down to your support that young people were still able to access the support they wanted this year. If you can pick up a Christmas gift from our online shop or take part in some festive fundraising, that will continue to make a massive difference. But things aren't easy at the moment, and we understand completely if you can't. What matters this Christmas is that we know you're with us.

This past weekend saw World Mental Health Day. The day itself will mean lots of different things to different people, but what we've chosen to do is have a chat about what 2020 has been like, with a positive twist.Wen is a volunteer and was supported by the Trust when she was younger, and joined us on the first episode of Sound Waves earlier in the year. Jack has been supported by the Trust on a number of trips and was due to sit his volunteer training this year. Chatting with Wen and Jack, even though we wish for things to have been different, it felt good to take stock and be thankful. This conversation is us sitting down and noticing the ways in which we have looked after ourselves and each other, and will continue to do so.

We know recovery doesn't end when treatment does. Survivor's guilt can hang over a young person as they move forward with their lives, remembering their peers who passed away. And despite being a difficult and conflicting feeling, often it goes unshared and unsupported. Teenage Cancer Trust Nurse Consultant Sue Morgan MBE & Annie, who has sailed with the Trust, have given talks on survivor's guilt. They share with Sound Waves why it's important we all acknowledge it - young people and practitioners alike - to make sure no one is made to cope all on their own.

The UK was in full lockdown the last time we talked about how people still can give their support to changing young lives. Now, we're starting to see some normality return. What was happening two months ago is no longer applicable, but all the same, who knows where we will be in two months' time? We've said it before and we'll keep saying it – once all of this is over, young people are going to need the Trust more than ever. We have to be here in 2021 and beyond to make sure those young people have access to what they need during their recovery.  There's no one way of giving those young people your backing. Simon tells us about fundraising from home. Tim, a rotarian, tells us about how he and his district will support the Trust after choosing us as one of their charities of the year. We hear about how spreading the word, directing people to our website, sharing our posts on social media – every little helps. So join us for the season two finale of Sound Waves as we pin down exactly what kind of support is possible right now while staying COVID safe. In case you hadn't heard, let us let you in on a little secret: applications are now open for mates and medics. With this episode, we're taking you behind the scenes. You will know, if you've been on a Trust trip, that mates and medics help everything run smoothly. We want to open that up today. What do mates and medics really do? How do they feel when they're on trips? What makes a good medic and a good mate?If you're tempted to apply, this is the episode for you. But if you're nervous about coming on a trip for the first time, it's for you too. Hearing what the roles involve and the kind of people who take them on is really fantastic.Which is why we have Marion, a medic and a keen sailor, here to tell you about her experiences so far. We have James too, the Trust's operations manager for the north, who runs trips from the Largs base.Maybe you're not applying to be a mate or a medic, and maybe you've already been on a trip so you know what to expect as a young person. This episode offers a glimpse into what it's like from a perspective we don't get to hear often, and we hope you agree our amazing volunteers are essential to the magic that happens on every Trust trip.

Almost ten years ago - to the day! - Izzy Ball came on her first Trust trip. She sailed from the Isle of Wight while in recovery from Hodgkin lymphoma. Every year since, she's made space for the Trust. She became a regular at residential trips as she returned to sail time and again. Then, when the time came, she became a volunteer, able to provide support from the perspective of someone who had been there herself.Alongside all this, she and her family have been dedicated fundraisers for the Trust (and our close partners CLIC Sargent). As well, she's graduated with a degree in teaching, having began her journey with the Trust before she even started secondary school. We hope you enjoy Izzy sharing her story. It's a fantastic insight into a long-term and ongoing relationship with the Trust and how that changes over the years. It's also eye-opening to hear about the different ways the Trust fits into people's lives as they grow and and bring something different with them every time. Cheers to ten years, Izzy. We can't wait for the next one.
