In this episode, Cassidy Johnston shares her journey from growing up in the city to becoming a first-generation large scale beef producer and ranch consultant. She talks about a college research project exploring the relationship between environmentalists and ranchers and how that led her to an internship where she met her husband, and eventually to her life on a farm. She discusses the complexities of ranching at scale, the importance of animal welfare, her thoughts on regenerative and organic practices, and the communication challenges that arise ag people and non-ag people make assumptions about each other. Cassidy advocates for building a more resilient food system that prioritizes collaboration and understanding among all stakeholders, and dreams of a better world where more people have access to high quality food.Takeaways:Cassidy Johnston is a first-generation beef producer and consultant. She transitioned from urban life to ranching, finding her place in the rural community. The importance of understanding the relationship between ranchers and environmentalists.Regenerative practices in agriculture are complex and vary by region.Communication between agriculture and corporate sectors is crucial for progress.Quality of food production should be prioritized over sheer efficiency.Hands-on experience is essential for those looking to enter the ranching industry.A better food system requires collaboration and understanding among all stakeholders.Sound bites:"I have an environmental studies degree from CU Boulder, which is a hippie degree from a hippie school.”“ That happened to be the day that I met the guy who would later become my husband.”“That paper really focused on the fact that ranchers and environmentalists have many of the same goals.”“I think the trouble with regenerative is it's really difficult to wrap it up in a neat bow and say this is regenerative and this isn't.”“We have to be really, really cognizant of the fact that a lot of people are struggling to afford groceries and telling people that they should be paying nine or $12 or $15 a pound for regenerative ground beef is absolutely ridiculous.”“I've heard people say the cow is just a means to an end. No, she is her own sentient being. She deserves quality care.”“People will kind of look down on us for being the big guy, but when something goes wrong in their place, they call us to help because we have the skills.”“In order to understand how you can do things differently, you have to understand where we came from first.”“I think there's a lot of people in the corporate sphere who don't care. They're focused on making money. But, I also think there's a lot that do care, and it's our job to find them and help them do the best that they can with the power that they have.”“I would like to see a higher quality of pretty much everything. I don't care if you're large or small. I don't care if you're first gen or sixth gen. What is the quality of your operation?”“What are the things we can scale to fix these problems for everybody? Not just an elite few that have the money to pay for it. How do we make this better food more accessible? For this special Christmas episode of The Beef Edge, we're re-visiting our 300th episode of the podcast that was recorded earlier this year with Matt Dempsey, whose career spans multiple decades and various roles in agricultural journalism and beyond. Matt has been instrumental in driving innovations in Irish agriculture through his work as a journalist, farmer and chairman of various industry groups and he gives his outlook for the Irish beef industry.  Matt discusses intervention, suckler incentive scheme, beef tribunal, BSE and Foot and Mouth to name but a few. Matte highlights the work done by the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation as a significant breakthrough as well as the emphasis on easy calving, and also of marbling of beef. He also comments on the emergence of grazing management, fertiliser, and especially grass varieties and reseeding that have been revolutionary. Matt discusses a previous campaign that the Farmers' Journal and the IFA carried out in relation to Brazilian beef which succeeded in getting the actual import regime changed at Brussels level when the beef trade in Ireland and Europe looked as if it was going to be fundamentally undermined. A huge thanks to everyone that has appeared on the Beef Edge podcast over the past 300 episodes and to all the listeners for making the podcast such a success - wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas. For more episodes from the Beef Edge podcast, visit the show page at:https://www.teagasc.ie/thebeefedge  Produced on behalf of Teagasc by LastCastMedia.com

Beef Industry News Tyson Announced The Closing Of Beef Plant In Nebraska The beef business has been a buzz this past week when Tyson, one of the Nation's largest meat packing companies, announced plans to close a large beef plant in Lexington, Nebraska.   The news of the possible closing comes just weeks after President Donald Trump claimed the four largest companies are driving up the prices on purpose, to keep meat prices high for the consumer. On November 7, Trump took to social media to call for a DOJ investigation into the price fixing claims by saying “I have asked the DOJ to immediately begin an investigation into the Meat Packing Companies who are driving up the price of Beef through Illicit Collusion, Price Fixing, and Price Manipulation. We will always protect our American Ranchers, and they are being blamed for what is being done by Majority Foreign Owned Meat Packers, who artificially inflate prices, and jeopardize the security of our Nation's food supply.” Back in October, Tyson and Cargill agreed to pay more than $87.5 million to settle a federal lawsuit for "inflating" beef prices by limiting the supply to the public. Trump's most recent claims earlier in November call out the foreign owned meat packers, as well as the American-owned ones, like Tyson. The White House website also posted about how much influence the top four meat companies have over the price of beef saying "The “Big Four” meat packers — JBS (Brazil), Cargill, Tyson Foods, and National Beef — currently dominate 85% of the U.S. beef processing market, up from just 36% in 1980. Two of these companies, including the largest meat packer in the world, are either foreign-owned or have significant foreign ownership and control." References: https://thenationaldesk.com/news/nation-world/report-tyson-to-close-large-meat-plant-just-weeks-after-trumps-collusion-claims Price Fixing In The Beef Industry According to agricultural economists and the National News Desk, beef prices at the grocery store aren't expected to budge, even after Tyson Foods announced it will close one beef plant and scale back another. Texas A&M economist David Anderson says government investigations into meat-packer collusion are also unlikely to lower prices. He notes that cattle prices are at record highs, and even the big processors are losing money. “If they had real market power, they wouldn't be losing money,” Anderson says. Right now, ground beef averages $6.33 a pound, up more than 11% from last year. The core issue, Anderson says, is tight cattle supply—the smallest U.S. beef-cow herd since the early 1960s. Anderson explains that every beef-packing plant, not just Tyson, is operating in the red because live cattle prices are rising faster than wholesale beef prices—a normal pattern when herds are low. When cattle are plentiful, the roles reverse: ranchers lose money and packers profit. Despite concerns about the dominance of a few large meatpackers, Anderson says there's little evidence they can artificially inflate grocery store prices. “To push prices higher, you have to control supply,” he says. “And packers don't own the cattle or the feedlots.” So what is driving today's high beef prices? A shrinking cattle herd, shaped by years of drought, rising costs, and previously low prices. And rebuilding that herd takes time. A calf born last spring won't have its first calf until 2027, and that next generation won't reach market weight until late 2029. “It's hard to beat biology,” Anderson says. “We can't speed that up.” Until then, experts say beef prices at the grocery store will likely stay high—no matter what happens in the packing plants. As of November 24, the EDCC has confirmed 29 EHV-1 cases associated with the event. The cases are located in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Colorado, New Mexico, Washington, Arizona, and South Dakota. Herpesvirus is highly contagious among horses and can cause a variety of ailments. In many horses, the first or only sign of EHV-1 infection is fever, which can go undetected. In addition to fever, other common signs of EHV-1 infection in young horses include cough, decreased appetite, depression, and a nasal discharge. Pregnant mares typically show no signs of infection before they abort, and abortions usually occur late in gestation (around eight months) but can be earlier. Abortions can occur anywhere from two weeks to several months following infection with EHV-1. Herpesvirus is easily spread by nose-to-nose or close contact with an infectious horse; sharing contaminated equipment including bits, buckets, and towels; or clothing, hands, or equipment of people who have recently had contact with an infectious horse. Routine biosecurity measures, including hygiene and basic cleaning and disinfection practices, should be in place at all times to help prevent disease spread. Already, some equine events have been cancelled or postponed due to EHV-1, while others have been put on high alert, including the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.  If your horses show any  concerning signs or abnormalities, especially a fever or neurological symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately. Proveye Awarded European Space Agency Contract to Deliver Nature-Positive Precision Fertiliser Solution to the Dairy and Beef Industry

Proveye, an Irish agri and climate tech company headquartered at NovaUCD in Dublin, today announced that it has been awarded a European Space Agency (ESA) contract to complete the development and deployment of ProvVari. ProvVari is a breakthrough precision fertiliser solution designed to increase productivity and reduce costs for farmers and significantly cut the environmental footprint of grassland farming across Europe. For decades, artificial fertilisers have been central to European food production, but their widespread use has also contributed to nutrient loss, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. The mission of Proveye, which is pioneering AI-driven remote sensing for grassland management, is to change that. With ESA's backing through the ESA Spark Funding initiative, ProvVari will harness space technology to guide the precise application of fertilisers, reducing waste and environmental impact while maintaining productivity and profitability for farmers. Built on Proveye's ProvGrass platform, ProvVari will combine satellite imagery from ESA's Sentinel-1 SAR and Sentinel-2 multispectral missions with high-resolution l imagery drone, GNSS guidance, and soil and meteorological data. The technology will generate variable rate application maps that optimise fertiliser use, safeguard water quality, and support national and European climate and biodiversity goals. "ProvVari has already drawn strong engagement from agri-advisors, machinery manufacturers, and seed and fertiliser companies, as well as a growing community of progressive Irish farmers. Together, these stakeholders reflect the urgent need for tools that help agriculture deliver food security while protecting natural ecosystems," said Jerome O'Connell, CEO, Proveye. He added, "At Proveye, we see little trade-off between farming and nature; our technologies are designed to enable both to thrive, and this ESA contract is a major step forward in our mission to align agricultural productivity with environmental stewardship, biodiversity protection, food security and climate resilience." Peter Finnegan, Manager of ESA Space Solutions Centre Ireland, which administers the ESA Spark Funding mechanism, welcomed Proveye's most recent ESA contract award and said, "The development of the ProvVari platform is an exciting new solution that will yield benefits for farmers and the environment alike, and is a timely intervention when positioned against the challenges of both increasing productivity and reducing negative environmental impact simultaneously." ProvVari will be launched first in Ireland in Q1 2026 before expanding to international markets. Alongside supporting farmers, ProvVari will also provide regulators and policymakers with a powerful mechanism to manage fertiliser use sustainably, contributing to healthier soils, cleaner waters, and more resilient landscapes across Europe. Cattle Industry News NCBA Calls Out Supreme Court Decision on Corporate Transparency Act: A Blow to Family Farms and Ranches The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) voiced strong disappointment following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to lift an injunction that had temporarily halted enforcement of the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA). The CTA introduces new reporting requirements that some say could impose significant burdens on small businesses, including family-owned farms and ranches. NCBA Executive Director of Government Affairs, Kent Bacus, expressed concern about the potential impact by saying the Corporate Transparency Act will blanket family-owned farms and ranches in excessive red tape, placing millions of small business owners at risk of legal trouble.  He went on to say that he is urging President Trump and the Treasury Secretary to intervene and protect small businesses from these onerous requirements by delaying enforcement until a workable solution is found. While NCBA's advocacy primarily focuses on farmers and ranchers, the Act's implications extend beyond agriculture. NCBA's Director of Policy Communications highlighted how the law could also weigh heavily on small and family-owned meat processors, adding to their regulatory challenges. The U.S. Supreme Court's decision overturned a nationwide injunction, allowing the Department of Treasury to enforce the Act while ongoing federal court cases challenge its legality. What This Means for Small Businesses The CTA would require entities to disclose detailed ownership information to the federal government, which could pose administrative and financial challenges for smaller operations.  Given the complexity of these new requirements, it is recommended that whether in agriculture, meat processing, or other industries—seek advice from legal or tax professionals to ensure compliance and mitigate risks.
