Lindsay Clancy, 34, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, is standing trial in Plymouth Superior Court for the deaths of her three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan. Prosecutors allege she strangled them with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023, then allegedly attempted suicide by jumping from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. She faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation, has pleaded not guilty, and her attorney, Kevin Reddington, is mounting an insanity defense built on severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.Wednesday's testimony picked up right where the defense wanted it to. Clinical psychologist Dr. Paul Zeizel, called by Reddington, told jurors Clancy was gripped by intrusive thoughts so persistent she believed people could hear them — and that if they did, her children would be taken from her. She called a suicide hotline twice in December and was turned away because she didn't have a plan, which apparently was the bar. Zeizel didn't sugarcoat what these thoughts do to a person: they don't ease up, they don't take breaks, and by January, his testimony went, they'd escalated into her mind telling her to kill herself. He also made a point jurors will have to sit with — that someone can be in psychosis and still function well enough to get through a day. After extensive testing, Zeizel says he found no psychopathy, but did find bipolar disorder with postpartum psychosis, and no indication she understood the wrongness of what she was doing.Her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out running errands when it happened and has since relocated to Manhattan. Lindsay Clancy saw her psychiatrist fourteen times in four months. Her nurse practitioner, who was also prescribing her medications, had no knowledge of those visits. When Clancy checked herself into a locked psychiatric unit, neither outpatient provider was notified.Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer joins Tony Brueski on True Crime Today to cover what these provider coordination failures mean in a case where three children — Cora, five, Dawson, three, and Callan, eight months — are dead.The trial at Plymouth Superior Court is in its third week. Testimony has shown Clancy searched "hallucinations" on her phone five days before January 24, 2023. She messaged providers that she felt completely hopeless and was experiencing unfamiliar intrusive thoughts. A postpartum treatment program she reached out to declined to accept her because of the number of medications she was already taking.Peer-reviewed literature documents postpartum psychosis as a rare condition — roughly one in every thousand births — with a four percent infanticide rate. Clancy's defense argues she was in the grip of that condition. The prosecution argues she was deliberate.Clancy attempted to end her own life immediately after. She jumped from a window and shattered her spine. She is permanently paralyzed. A person on the autism spectrum leaves a file-sharing program running overnight because they want cartoons or anime. By morning, thousands of images have downloaded onto their hard drive, some of them child sexual abuse material they never chose and, in some cases, never even opened. Months later, the FBI is at the door. A judge stares at the download count and asks how anyone could not understand what they were doing. My guest Dr. Mary Riggs Cohen, spends her working life answering that question in courtrooms across the country. She is a clinical psychologist with thirty years specializing in autism spectrum disorders and has conducted forensic evaluations of autistic defendants since 2009. Her new book, co-written with defense attorney Elizabeth Kelley and digital forensics expert Michele Bush, is Cybercrime and the Autism Spectrum: How the Online World Creates Victims and Offenders. I met Dr. Cohen at the International Academy of Law and Mental Health Congress in Montreal, and I asked her on the show the moment her presentation ended, because so much of what she described maps directly onto the recruitment tactics I have studied for five decades. Dr. Cohen's first point cuts against the instinct to sort people into predators and prey. “Most people on the spectrum are both victimized and offenders at some point,” she told me. Cyberbullying, financial scams, and sexual exploitation run in one direction. Chat rooms that ask for “a picture of a child in your family” run in the other, quietly moving an autistic person into possession of CSAM they may never have sought out. Child sexual abuse material (CSAM) is not “child pornography.” It's evidence of child sexual abuse—and it's a crime to create distribute or possess. CSAM includes both real and synthetic content such as images created with artificial intelligence tools. Because many autistic individuals catalog and organize obsessively, agents who search a seized computer often find the material sorted into folders, which reads to an outsider as intent rather than what it frequently is: a hyperfocus trait turned against the person who has it. Some time before the November general election, Fargo voters will have a special election concerning a proposal to city government from an at-large commission, where each member of the commission (except for the mayor) is elected by the whole city, to a ward system, where the city is split into jurisdictions each with a specific representative. "It would establish six wards and one person elected from each ward," former city commissioner Arlette Preston, an organizer behind this issue, said on this episode of Plain Talk. "The candidate would have to live inside the ward and be elected by people in the ward. So, it would also change from a commission form of government to a council form, which that will remove the commissioners as they are currently assigned certain portfolios and daily interactions with certain departments. It would remove them from that and allow for the city administrator to actually have direct oversight." Former Mayor Tim Mahoney has opposed this proposal, and one of his complaints is the cost. He's said it could cost the taxpayers as much as $500,000 to make the switch, but Preston dismissed that claim. "I have no idea where he got his numbers and he never really specified where they came from," she said. "There would be two additional people on the council versus what is currently the commission. So there'd be a total of seven people including the mayor versus now it's five. So those two additional people would add probably around 80,000 total in salary and benefits for two of them. That would be an annual cost." She also pushed back on Mahoney's claim that the proposal would lead to a weak mayor. She said that state law actually defines a system like this as promoting a strong mayor, because while the mayor would only participate in council votes as a tie breaker, he or she would have veto power. Also, with the mayor's job already having moved to a full-time position, whoever is elected to that position will be more involved in day-to-day administration. Preston says the change toward wards would make Fargo's leaders more accountable. "What this allows is to make sure that somebody does advocate for you," she explained. "Right now, when communications come into the commission, it goes to all five people." Living in a district that has a specific member of the city council to represent your area means they should be more responsive. "It really, I think, establishes a stronger sense of accountability to the constituents," Preston told us.
