Actor, writer, and disability advocate, Alicia Grace is a spark of joy! She joined us to talk about living with blindness and a brain tumor. We talk about How to Train Your Dragon, the first film that helped her connect to her disability, and the limited series, All the Light We Cannot See, which included a blind character (and actor) who was more than her disability.  Alicia really wants to have more authentic representations of people living with a brain tumor on film and TV. Brain tumors are often used to have a character suddenly on their deathbed or show a miracle cure moment, but often people with brain tumors live on a wait-and-watch period, like Alicia, who has had her brain tumor her whole life. Her mantra is No Day But Today – a song in the musical Rent by Jonathan Larson. He inspired her to live her life in love and not fear, as she lives through six-month periods between MRI scans.  Contact us: BraaainsPodcast.com Follow: @BraaainsPodcast Music: @_Deppisch_ Support this show: Patreon.com/BraaainsPodcast

Can a needle and thread mend more than fabric? Ceramic artist Leah Jensen joins Grant Gibson to discuss the radical pivot in her practice after a brain cancer diagnosis — and how stitching became a daily act of survival, documentation and repair. In this episode, we explore making as medicine and the quiet power of slow, analogue craft. We discuss:Renaissance Patterns: The unexpected art-historical roots of Leah's intricate, geometric ceramic surfaces.'Anti-Digital' Making: Why she rejects screens and software in favour of the hand, the eye, and the hour-long stitch. The Brain Tumour Book: How embroidery became a diary of diagnosis, surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy — exhibited this April at London's Fitzrovia Chapel with Cavaliero Finn.'Sewing is an act of emotional repair': Using thread — and her own hair — to process trauma, memory loss and identity.Return to Clay: Re-entering the ceramic studio after illness, and how the two mediums now speak to each other.Leah also reflects on collapsing behind a bar in the moment that changed everything, the role of her parents and partner in her recovery, and what making has taught her about being present. You can support The Brain Tumour Charity via the Brain Tumour Book fundraising page: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/braintumourbookcharityfundraisingexhibitionExplore more: Visit materialmatters.design for more on our fairs and conferences.Support the show

Bob Thwaites had called a caravan on Swanscombe Peninsula home since 1991, but the structure - and everything inside - has been levelled to the ground by the landowners of the site. Also on today's podcast, a dangerous driver who led police on a 20 minute chase after refusing to stop in Edenbridge has been jailed. The 23-year-old was spotted acting suspiciously on Mont St Aignan Way last month and followed into south London. The chief executive of South East Water has resigned. David Hinton has been under fire since water outages affected thousands of customers in Kent before and after the new year. A Faversham man who lost both of his parents to brain tumours has revealed how it's now inspired his career. Ollie Payne's dad passed away when he was just seven and his mum died just five weeks after being diagnosed 10 years later. Send us Fan MailHeadache in the consultation room is common; a brain tumour is (thankfully) not — and that's exactly why we're so prone to worry and to miss the subtle clues. In this episode, Nik and Fi cut through the noise on headaches, red flags and brain tumours. They explore how no single symptom reliably hits the NICE “refer” threshold, what to do with “headache +” and “cognitive +”, when to push for urgent imaging/referral, and how to safety net adults and children. Then they move on to a quietly game-changing topic: cancer and frailty — how to spot it, why it alters investigation and treatment risk, what to include in suspected cancer referrals, and practical steps that primary care clinicians can start today to reduce harm and improve outcomes.Useful LinksPrehabilitation resources for healthcare professionals | Macmillan Cancer SupportMalnutrition Universal Screening Tool: MUST Macmillan Cancer Support - healthy eating and cancer GP Trainee Essentials support package information, and the Red Whale CalendarSend us your feedback podcast@redwhale.co.uk or send a voice message Sign up to receive Pearls here. Key Points Jesse was diagnosed with grade 2 astrocytoma in March 2023 after experiencing a grand mal seizure at 4:30 AM with no prior symptoms indicating something was wrong.Surgery successfully resected approximately 85% of the brain tumor located in Jesse's left frontal lobe, but complete removal would have caused permanent paralysis on his right side.Conflicting medical opinions emerged as the neurosurgeon recommended watch and wait approach while the radiation oncologist insisted on immediate radiation and chemotherapy treatment.Decision was made to postpone standard cancer treatment in favor of holistic approaches including cannabis oil after learning about a promising trial drug called voracitinib.Contact with Corrie Yelland was established through a Facebook group recommendation from another astrocytoma patient who had success with RSO cannabis oil treatment.Initial cannabis protocol included one gram of RSO daily by suppository, CBD-CBG oral combination, eight-strain mix with 20-25% CBD, nasal spray, and comprehensive vitamin supplements.Remarkable improvement occurred within six weeks as MRI scans showed complete disappearance of tumor enhancement areas and one crescent-shaped tumor section, leading oncologists to unanimously approve watch and wait approach.Growing and producing cannabis oil became necessary due to cost considerations, requiring significant learning curve for indoor and outdoor cultivation within legal medical license framework.Medical team acknowledged Jesse's inspiring approach to taking health into his own hands, though they did not request documentation of the successful holistic protocol.Final MRI results showed no evidence of disease after over 900 days, which Jesse processed emotionally over the course of a week before feeling significantly lighter and more optimistic.Perspective on life priorities fundamentally changed with greater focus on meaningful activities and relationships while reducing stress over previously important but ultimately trivial matters.Recommendation emphasized patients should actively research treatment options, make informed decisions about their own healthcare, and seek medical teams who will listen and support patient choices.
