Episode 73: Comedy tonight! And comedy back then, particularly 26 April 1923... It's a royal wedding so the BBC celebrate in style, with a gala concert, sponsored by Harrods (yes, sponsorship on the BBC!), given by The Co-Optimists, the legendary interwar comedy troupe. The cast includes Stanley Holloway (later of My Fair Lady) and, weirdly, the ex of the prince getting married. Whoops. We also explore a landmark pre-BBC broadcast by The Co-Optimists, in the summer of 1921. It's London's first broadcast, and pretty much the only legal broadcast of 1921. We'll explain why, and you'll hear them in full flow. Plus, for those who prefer their comedy more recent, we've got comedy writers James Cary and Simon Dunn, as well as Hi-De-Hi's Jeffrey Holland, telling us about later BBC comedy from The Goons to Bottom, via Steptoe, Dad's Army and Roy Clarke's ovens. It's a lot to pack in, so it's a longer episode than we usually go for, but we trust you'll be entertained, or at least informed about being entertained, or educated about being informed about being entertained... SHOWNOTES: Simon Dunn's books include Proctology: A Bottom Examination. James Cary's books include The Gospel According to a Sitcom Writer. Paul Kerensa's books include Hark! The Biography of Christmas - also available as an audiobook. Hear The Co-Optimists via this Youtube channel. Alan Stafford's article on John Henry and the first BBC topical comedy. Happy Halloween Listeners! J.D.'s back and in this spooky special, Simon Dunn returns to discuss Andrew Marshall's criminally underrated supernatural drama starring Richard Coyle and Samantha Womack!
Today we're joined by Simon Dunn, Co-founder at The Lighthouse Retreat. Middle East's first year-round holistic wellness and detox retreat that believes in balance. And works to be part of your lifestyle to enhance your life and change your perspective.
Livehealthy editor Ann Marie McQueen speaks with Simon Dunn, the co-founder of The Lighthouse Retreat in Ras Al Khaimah. This is the Middle East's first year-round holistic wellness and detox retreat – I've been there for a day and it was pure bliss. We talk about what burnout feels like, Simon's personal story, and why so many of us who are living on the edge really do need a break.
Following the success of 2point4 Children, Andrew Marshall wrote two series of the hospital sitcom Health & Efficiency. Despite one of the most impressive cast of actors ever brought together for a sitcom, a politically charged premise and a darkly comical look at the challenges facing the NHS in the 1990s (which, without doubt, remains relevant today) it has been all but forgotten about. In this special episode of Don't Slam Your Podcast, Andrew Marshall shares memories of his underrated sitcom and J.D. is joined by new guest Simon Dunn to give it a post-mortem examination.
Simon Dunn is a sporting venn diagram. Growing up in Wollongong, he played rugby union for his entire life; before one day, whilst on trials in Canada, he was recruited for the Australian bobsled teamSimon went from charging into people and trying to hurt others, to slugging a sled, and trying his best not to get hurt. He's also the first openly gay man to represent his country in bobsled, and coming from a sport like Rugby, where hypermasculinity is rife, Simon overcame a lot to get where he is, find his champions and now, be a champion for others.Thank you to Uncle Jack Charles for the acknowledgement of country. For more calming ideas head to our website.Subscribe to BRAVE, your new favourite free monthly newsletter here See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Iszi Lawrence (Terrible Lizards, The British Museum Membercast) and Simon Dunn (setisoppO podcast) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Iszi’s choice Galaxy Quest. Galaxy Quest is a 1999 comedy homage and parody of sci-fi of the 70s and Star Trek and its fans. It stars stars Tim Allen as Commander Taggart/Jason, Sigourney Weaver as Lieutenant Tawny Madison/Gewn, Alan Rickman as Dr. Lazarus, Tony Shalhoub as Tech Sergeant Chen, Sam Rockwell as Crewman #6 and Daryl Mitchell as Lieutenant Laredo/Tommy collectively the cast of 1980s tv sci-fi show - Galaxy Guest. While at a sci-fi convention the group are visited by aliens (in human form) and believing the crew to be real enlist their help to fight of the evil alien Roth'h'ar Sarris who has destroyed their home planet. You don’t have to be a Trekkie or a sci-fi nerd to appreciate and enjoy Galaxy Guest. Underneath the parody - there are some solid laugh out loud moments - is a huge heart for fans, who without it the shows and genre wouldn’t be what it is today. Scores [supsystic-tables id=208] Galaxy Quest scores pretty highly across recommendability and small screen to score a fairly decent 3.98 overall. What do you guys think? Have you seen Super 8? Simon Dunn (setisoppO podcast) and Iszi Lawrence (Terrible Lizards, The British Museum Member cast) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Simon’s choice Parenthood. Parenthood is a 1989 Ron Howard comedy ensemble film starring Steve Martin, Mary Steenburgen, Rick Moranis, Martha Plimpton, Keanu Reeves, Dianne Wiest, Jason Robards, Tom Hulce, and Joaquin Phoenix (in one of his earliest roles as Leaf). Martin plays Gill who is having a family crisis as his eldest son is having emotional problems and his wife Karen (Steenburgen) is expecting their fourth child. His older divorced sister Helen (Wiest) is having her own family problems with her children. Her younger son Garry (Phoenix) is withdrawn and secretive and her older daughter Julie (Plimpton) is dating Tod, presumed no good but turns out to be a dude while dealing with loneliness and lack of sex life. Their younger sister Susan is married to Nathan (Moranis) and is neglected as he is more interested in spending time with his precocious daughter. If that wasn’t enough life drama their younger brother Larry (Hulce) returns with gambling problems and his secret biracial son. Parenthood mixes some feel-good moments with some surprisingly bleak visions of parenthood. No film about parenthood would be with sentimentality and it just about gets away with it because it's actually genuinely funny. Iszi hated it, whereas Simon, Kobi, and Helen all enjoyed it - both as a nostalgia watch and as a good Steve Martin film. We did all agree that it should have ended on the ‘life is rollercoaster’ metaphor rather than the maternity ward end. Scores [supsystic-tables id=199] Despite Iszi not enjoying anything about it Parenthood still manages to score a very respectable 3.95 overall. What do you guys think? Have you seen Parenthood? Join a fun-filled podcast with design wiz Simon Dunn, from Keen As Mustard Marketing, as he and Priscilla discuss holistic marketing strategy methods, data visualization, and the importance of industry networking. Simon, with Keen as Mustard, has been finding new ways for agencies to understand research and insights for the past ten years, with an indisputable understanding of the complexities of the field. “You don’t just do a new brand, or launch a new website, sit back and wait for the work to come in. It’s all about actually doing all of those things, joining them up, having a plan - segmentations - targeting. It’s a whole joined-up web of stuff that you’re doing - and you do need to be doing all of them. And for quite a long time!” In addition to providing marketing research PR and media relations, Keen as Mustard also helped develop Viz-Fest, an annual 4-day webinar full of market research insights. While the discussion is rife with extremely serious industry discussion, Simon and Priscilla find time to reminisce about Simon’s classiness, laugh about rebranding difficulties, and share a moment of sadness about Priscilla’s missed opportunity for Scotch eggs. Clare Balding is walking the whole of The Nidderdale Way, a circular fifty three mile walking route in North Yorkshire. In this edition she walks from Heathfield to Bewerley in the company of Robin Hermes and Simon Dunn, two self-styled, grumpy old men. They have been walking together, along with their friend Richard, every month for over thirty-five years and this is the first time they've actually invited anyone to join them. The Ramblings team don't make the most auspicious start by being several minutes late, a sin Robin holds against them right until the end when the joys of the afternoon allow him to forgive and forget! This section of the walk takes in the site of the disused lead mines at Ashfold Side Beck. Robin and Simon discuss their walking history with Clare, their favourite and least favourite routes and how they score the perfect walk. The route can be found on OS Explorer 298 Producer Lucy Lunt.
