Lee Gatiss, James Cary, Rob Munro and Ros Clarke consider the various ways in which the Church of England can be reformed and renewed.
The second in the mini series looking at the Church of England featuring Charlie Skrine, James Cary, George Crowder, Lee Gatiss and Ros Clarke.
Talk on 'The Church That England Needs' by James Cary, at the Junior Anglican Evangelical Conference 2023 (The Church for England).
Episode 73: Comedy tonight! And comedy back then, particularly 26 April 1923... It's a royal wedding so the BBC celebrate in style, with a gala concert, sponsored by Harrods (yes, sponsorship on the BBC!), given by The Co-Optimists, the legendary interwar comedy troupe. The cast includes Stanley Holloway (later of My Fair Lady) and, weirdly, the ex of the prince getting married. Whoops. We also explore a landmark pre-BBC broadcast by The Co-Optimists, in the summer of 1921. It's London's first broadcast, and pretty much the only legal broadcast of 1921. We'll explain why, and you'll hear them in full flow. Plus, for those who prefer their comedy more recent, we've got comedy writers James Cary and Simon Dunn, as well as Hi-De-Hi's Jeffrey Holland, telling us about later BBC comedy from The Goons to Bottom, via Steptoe, Dad's Army and Roy Clarke's ovens. It's a lot to pack in, so it's a longer episode than we usually go for, but we trust you'll be entertained, or at least informed about being entertained, or educated about being informed about being entertained... SHOWNOTES: Simon Dunn's books include Proctology: A Bottom Examination. James Cary's books include The Gospel According to a Sitcom Writer. Paul Kerensa's books include Hark! The Biography of Christmas - also available as an audiobook. Hear The Co-Optimists via this Youtube channel. Alan Stafford's article on John Henry and the first BBC topical comedy. A photo of 'Listening to the Gala Concert at Harrods' (thanks Andrew Barker!) - 26 April 1923. A photo of the Beaver Hut, Strand (the site of the later Bush House) - Summer 1921. Sidney Nicholson's wedding anthem - Beloved Let Us Love One Another - hosted by the English Heritage Music Series at University of Minnesota. Episode 59 is the final part of our trilogy of info-dashes through the first British Broadcasting Century. Here we span 1988-2022: the digital years. Enjoy hearing from experts, those who were there and contributions from you marvellous podcast listeners. (Part 1 was more archive-heavy - but rights issues get trickier as we get more recent - oh and do go back and listen to part 1 (1922-54) and part 2 (1955-87)). Some excerpts are from longer interviews that you'll hear on the podcast soon (eg. ex Radio 1 boss Johnny Beerling, sitcom star Jeffrey Holland). Some are from previous episodes (go back and hear Lee Mack or Chris Jarvis). Some have been specially sent in for this episode (thanks Jon Dear, Alan Stafford, Dr Andrea Smith). Art and humor can be difficult to define, but we all know it when we see it. But how should Christians think about the arts and humor? Are there boundaries and rules to what Christians produce and consume? In this episode we're joined by BBC comedy writer, author, and podcaster, James Cary. We discuss the importance of enjoying the arts, how comedy is about truth-telling yet still seems to be at odds with religion. Cary discusses his view that Art is important, life is poetry, the Bible is funny (and that Jesus is too). He answers questions on the risks of reading the Bible without a sense of humor, and the essentially human component of humor. This one's a collaboration! Our friends over at the Keswick Convention Podcast had Ed join them for an episode their and we just had to share it with you!We want our kids to be grateful, right? We keep telling them to say 'thank you'. But how do we make it a heartfelt habit, rather than just lip-service. The truth is that parents have to be grateful themselves! Ed joins James Cary and Rachel Redeemed exploring how this works out in our messy families lives, along with comments from Anna Putt and Girma Bishaw. You can have a look at Keswick's publications and further resources here.People: Ed Drew - is the Director of Faith in Kids. James Cary is an unusual mix. He is a writer of situation comedy for BBC TV (eg. Miranda, Bluestone 42) and Radio (Think the Unthinkable, Hut 33) and blogs about the technicalities of the process. He has also produced a video course called Writing Your Sitcom. In case you're wondering, his favourite sitcoms of all time are Yes, Prime Minister and Seinfeld. James Cary is also a Christian, with tendencies towards Calvinism (see? I warned you he was odd). He is also a member of the House of Laity of the General Synod for the Church of England for the Diocese of Bath & Wells, and a Lay Representative of Synod on The Archbishops' Council. He has a degree in Theology from the University of Durham, preaches at his church from time to time and has no plans to become a vicar. For over a decade, he wrote a column for the now defunct Third Way magazine.James is especially interested in the interaction between church, faith, culture and politics. His heroes include GK Chesterton, CS Lewis, William Wilberforce, PG Wodehouse, PJ O'Rourke and David Gower.
Abigail and Tilly are joined by two British blokes to talk about stories and the Christian home. How can we tell stories in our homes that will strengthen our faith and plant seeds in our children? What narratives do we tell ourselves throughout the day, and how does this affect our joy? What are the false narratives our culture is telling, and what how does the Great Story contrast with those false narratives? James Cary and Barry Cooper are Reformed Brits with a background in comedy and writing who host a podcast together: Cooper and Cary Have Words. Abigail and Tilly are both fans, and now you get to enjoy them as much as we have.
