Send us a textIn recent decades, women's roles and self-expression have strengthened significantly. Eleanor Roosevelt said, “A woman is like a tea bag. You can't tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water.”Women deliver a unique emotional perspective on life, expanding consciousness and creating connection. They blossom with strength and confidence when they receive support and recognition. A strength needed to share roles with men and step into leadership.Their emotional wisdom connects us to life and our humanity. I've often heard a new mother say, “I didn't know I could love this much!” No mother sends her son to war. Instead, they teach them how to love.In this episode my guest artist Andrea Smith, shares her personal journey while deciphering the major blocks to peace, love, and celebrating our differences. My take away from these last two interviews with female artists is, that women represent what we may soon be ready to acknowledge. The path to healing our world is empowering them to lead.Original Music by Will Taylor, Kenda Taylor & Strings AttachedSongs: Sister and Sam feat, Logan Waterstringsattached.bandcamp.comSponsors:Sedona's New Day Spa3004 W State Rte 89A, Sedona, AZsedonanewday.com928.282.7502The Copper Heart Art for Heart SenseArtist Catherine StefanavageWebsite: iamcatherine.comEmail: iamcatherine16@gmail.comA huge Thank You to all our Sponsors! Send us a text**Below is AI generated**Is "cheeky" the most overused word in our everyday vocabulary? We kick things off with a humorous exploration of this label being slapped on everything from muesli bars to sports drinks. As we chuckle through language missteps, we also tackle an advertisement from the Victorian Cancer Council that boldly claims "one in two is too many." This prompts a serious reflection on the effectiveness of such messaging in cancer awareness and the potential for these tactics to oversimplify complex issues. Switching gears, we dive into the evolving landscape of breast cancer advocacy, spotlighting Andrea Smith's push for visibility for those living with long-term metastatic breast cancer. Our conversation then takes a critical turn as we dissect a controversial UK government proposal advocating weight loss injections to reduce obesity-related unemployment. By unpacking the assumptions and socio-economic factors tied into this initiative, we raise questions about the erosion of public trust in health policies. Is this the first full-length Shakespeare on the BBC I see before me? Yes it is. And the first radio comedy personality, in John Henry. We're in late May 1923 - 28th to 31st to be precise - and the BBC has suffering from a boycott of theatre producers. Performers are hard to come by, so the Beeb brings drama and comedy in-house. The result? Cathleen Nesbitt (later from Upstairs Downstairs, An Affair to Remember and The Parent Trap) produces and stars in the first of many full-length Shakespeare plays, Twelfth Night on 28th May 1923. Prior to this, there had been scenes and Shakespeare nights. But this was a chance to broadcast the longest and most ambitious play of this new medium. Illuminating us on this, the return of Dr Andrea Smith of the University of Suffolk - the expert on the BBC and Shakespeare. She'll tell us all about the legacy of Auntie and Shakey, including the only one of his plays that to date has still not been adapted for BBC radio. And three days after that first Shakespeare, another BBC debut: comedian John Henry, set to become broadcasting's first comedy personality. His comic monologues, often surreal and downbeat, evolved into tales of his family life, then a dialogue with his beloved Blossom... while off-air, their domestic life became more tragedy than comedy. Comedy historian Alan Stafford tells all. It's quite a tale. John Henry surely deserves mention in the history books... ...on which, both Andrea and Alan have books out soon. See below shownotes for details - and we'll mention more of them on the podcast and on our social mediums when they're published. SHOWNOTES: Look out for Dr Andrea Smith's book 'Shakespeare on the Radio: A Century of BBC Plays', published by Edinburgh University Press in 2025. Look out for Alan Stafford's book 'Bigamy Killed the Radio Star - John Henry: BBC Comedy Pioneer', published by Fantom Publications in late 2024. Did you know that women suffer from burnout at higher rates than men do? This is also true for women in leadership positions, including dentistry. Today's episode sheds light on the pressing issue of burnout, particularly among female dentists. My guest is Andrea Smith, an advocate for well-being and empowerment, particularly in the healthcare field. After a decade in the corporate world, she became exhausted from juggling the roles of employee, mother, wife, and friend. Andrea decided to create her own business, offering sales training to the Med Tech industry, but the burnout remained. Ultimately, this motivated Andrea to create the Thrive by Design Group, which supports and empowers women to embrace their true selves and break free from the situations causing their burnout. She brings important insights for addressing this pervasive challenge, strengthened by her own personal journey. We talk about the root causes of burnout, emphasizing the compounded pressures women face, such as the high stakes of managing a dental practice and family life. Andrea also offers practical advice and strategies for women to navigate these challenges, advocating for a balance that fosters well-being and success. Through “The Awaken Your SuperHERo” course she designed, women can learn how to create a sustainable and balanced life. Episode 68 and STILL in March 1923 - March 26th to be precise, as Major Arthur Corbett-Smith is hired to be the 5th Cardiff station director in about as many weeks. It's not going well there... ...Corbett-Smith to the rescue? Trouble is, he's a little divisive. Some say he's the greatest gift to broadcasting (well, he does - he wrote his memoir in the third person), others say he's best out of the BBC (Reith, some newspaper correspondents). Listen - make your own mind up. To help you decide, two fab guests - Shakespeare-on-the-air expert DR ANDREA SMITH of the University of Suffolk (as Corbett-Smith aimed to be first to broadcast all his complete works) and GARETH GWYNN (writer of sitcom The Ministry of Happiness, all about Corbett-Smith and Cardiff 5WA). Plus the first National Anthem on the BBC... the first time signals... and an early Newcastle station director so popular that when he moved to Bournemouth, Geordies bought more powerful radio sets just to hear him from the south coast. HIM professionals and nurses can get along, after all. There has long been a divide in the clinical documentation integrity (CDI) profession over who can/should serve in the CDI role. Though it has lessened with the passing of years, that divide still exists today. Recent ACDIS survey data shows that 72% of CDI professionals are nurses. Nothing wrong with that; nurses make wonderful CDI professionals. But I know of many fine CDI professionals with HIM/coding backgrounds who have also succeeded in the role. As well as MDs, even the occasional respiratory tech or CPHQ. With this episode of Off the Record I wanted to prove that an RN and an RHIA can not only exist side-by-side, but get along, quite amicably. As friends, even. Turns out I did not have to look far or dig too deeply. At a reception at the ACDIS national conference earlier this year I ran into Andrea Smith and Rebecca McDade. I made my way over to their table, and a half hour of conversation (and a bit of wine) later, invited them on to a podcast that did not yet exist, except in my mind. What struck me was that they were friends, despite their very different backgrounds. Five months later I had them on Off the Record. And can now bring you this show, and revive a part of the conversation we had that evening at ACDIS. Andrea is the CDI Director at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas, a nurse who moved into CDI eight years ago. Rebecca meanwhile is Director of Revenue Cycle Integrity for the same organization, and an RHIA. Despite their differences they work very well together, complimenting each other's unique strengths and skills in adjacent roles (note: Rebecca is not directly in CDI but works closely with that department). We cover the lay of the land at Washington Regional Medical Center, including the staffing of its CDI and coding programs, metrics for success, and assistive software. Then a day in a life of each, their roles and responsibilities, and respective origin stories. Things get interesting when we talk about the historical RN/HIM divide, how they've bridged that gap, and the unique strengths each profession brings to the table (this starts at about the 37-minute mark of the show). Hosting this conversion reinforced that we can get along, at least some and perhaps most of the time, if we're willing to acknowledge differences and be generous. Andrea and Rebecca are proof.

In today's episode, I have a conversation with Andrea Smith of Smith Social Company about successfully hiring and working with social media and digital marketing contractors and agencies of any kind with your med spa. Smith Social Company provides social media management and virtual assistant services to med spas. The inspiration for this episode came about because Andrea and I were both sharing recent war stories of horrible experiences our clients have had with agencies in our industry that aren't really practicing ethically. In this discussion, we unpack how you can successfully hire contractors of any kind when you are looking for help in your med spa. Once upon a time, a Shakespeare play on BBC Radio would inevitably feature actors with perfect received pronunciation. Now that has all changed. Actor Samuel West, no stranger to Shakespearian roles, is joined by Dr Andrea Smith to hear how horizons have widened and productions enriched by new voices and new settings for the plays. We'll hear about plays set in India, plays recorded in Welsh, those with characters clearly from Africa or the Caribbean and voices that are far from the cut glass of RP. Presented by Samuel West and Dr Andrea Smith Produced by Susan Marling A Just Radio Production
By the time the BBC had come of age in the 70s and 80s, radio production had become a creative art. The Radiophonic Workshop could famously transport listeners to imagined worlds and this was certainly the case with productions of Shakespeare. Actor Samuel West and Dr Andrea Smith celebrate the creativity that gave us everything from the magic of Puck and Oberon in A Midsummer Night's Dream to battle scenes and the horrors of the gouging of eyes in King Lear. Presented by Samuel West and Dr Andrea Smith Produced by Susan Marling A Just Radio Production
Actor Samuel West, who has played many Shakespearian roles - some of them on the radio - is joined by Dr Andrea Smith as they take a trip through 100 years (nearly) of Shakespeare on the 'wireless'. Today they focus on one returning character - Juliet from Romeo and Juliet. This is without doubt the most popular play and there are wonderful very early clips of actors such as Fay Compton taking the role in 1944. We hear how sometimes the part of 14-year-old Juliet was taken by an actor old enough to be her grandmother and about the snobbery attached to the idea of how exactly Shakespeare should be spoken. Presented by Samuel West and Dr Andrea Smith Produced by Susan Marling A Just Radio Production
Actor Samuel West is joined by Dr Andrea Smith in a journey through 100 years (nearly) of Shakespeare on the radio. You might think that the years of the Second World War would have given listeners a thirst for history plays and great stirring speeches such as those in Henry V. But in fact it was pastoral comedy that was most popular - a reminder perhaps of the idealised, imagined Britain that people were fighting to protect. We hear too how production techniques gained sophistication and that theatricality slowly gave way to realism. Presented by Samuel West and Dr Andrea Smith Produced by Susan Marling A Just Radio Production
Landing on centenary day (well, 100 years aince the BBCompany was formed), episode 55 is the tale of the first Bard on the Beeb. Dr Andrea Smith joins us to talk us through the first broadcast Shakespeare - but it's only part 1, as on Feb 16th 1923, it's just excerpts: scenes from Julius Caesar and Othello. Andrea will return for the first full-length play, when we reach May 1923 in our podcast timeline.
