Includes a HIP HOP song I wrote about our guest. I was introduced to him by our mutual friend Damian Lewis, he's starred in award winning films and he became close friends with Hollywood actor Tom Hardy who's since been nominated for an Academy Award. They've acted together and even set up a theatre company together. My guest's also a stand up comedian who's performed with stars like Harry Hill, Stephen Merchant and Russell Howard. I run with him and I wrote a rap about our guest DAVID WHITNEY that you can hear at the beginning of this episode. As we draw towards the end of our 6th Season and chalk up 440+ episodes, it's time we reach into the archive to feature conversations and creatives previously featured on STAGES. We spotlight such episodes, in case you missed them first time ‘round - or so you can simply savour a second listen. The STAGES podcast opens an essential doorway to access precious oral histories from the people who were, and are, on and around our stages. Conversations with Creatives about Craft and Career! In this return episode, we spotlight a conversation with Jonathan Biggins from February 2019.Jonathan Biggins loathes all forms of social media. When I invited him onto STAGES, he told me he'd never listened to a podcast! So, I was thrilled to introduce him to the form.Mr Biggins is charming, and armed with a wit we relish and crave. He is one of the creators and performers of the Wharf Revue – a popular entertainment that has demanded a date on the calendar annually.Well, it's that time of the year once again, when the silliness and satire takes centre stage, in a season at Sydney's Seymour Centre. This year's offering, The Wharf Revue: Pride in Prejudice, has been written by the team we adore - Jonathan Biggins, Drew Forsythe and Phil Scott (incidentally, who all have been featured on the podcast and can be found in the STAGES archive!).The cast consists of Mr Biggins, Mr Forsythe, Mandy Bishop, David Whitney and Andrew Worboys. Bookings at seymourcentre.com. From November 8th.The STAGES podcast is available to access and subscribe from Spotify and Apple podcasts. Or from wherever you access your favourite podcasts. How do we make open source work for everyone? While at NDC in Oslo, Carl and Richard talked to David Whitney about his experiences working on open-source projects, and the challenges of making them sustainable. David talks about how many projects start with an individual making something for themselves, which then evolves into many people utilizing the project, but not contributing to it. And when companies depend on that software, the pressure on the creators gets serious - but without compensation. How do we make open source better? And how do the tech giants make the situation better or worse?

Waiter, is there a ghost in my soup? The Whitney, one of Detroit's great restaurants, began life as a grand 19th Century mansion. David Whitney, one of Michigan's richest lumber barons, would be startled to learn not only that the public is dining on Faroe Island salmon and shrimp and scallop sauté in his Woodward Avenue manor, but tales of paranormal activity have long been a popular menu item. We explore the subtext of "spirits" served at the Whitney.
David Whitney moved to Detroit and made his mansion from all of the lumber money he had made. That mansion changed hands a few times before becoming the restaurant it is today. Jake, Lisa, and Davis decide to take a bite out of this haunted location in the Motor City, The Whitney in Detroit.Stained Glass Windows, some scary EVPs and a history that is more confusing than factual. Today host George Smart and special guest cohost Kate Wagner of McMansion Hell dives into two Modernist house museums by internationally famous architects: Richard Neutra’s VDL house in LA and Philip Johnson’s Glass house in New Canaan CT. Richard Neutra became one of the most important architects in the world. In fact, Time Magazine featured Neutra on its cover and ranked him second only to Frank Lloyd Wright. Our first guest is Sarah Lorenzen, Director of the Neutra's VDL house in Los Angeles, a place where he experimented with new Modernist building materials and techniques. Philip Johnson was an architect but he thrived on being a kingmaker to the growing Modernist movement. He organized the profoundly influential exhibition on International Style at the Museum of Modern Art in 1932 which introduced important Modernist architects such as Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, and Mies van der Rohe. Joining the conversation is Cole Akers of the Glass House, former home to Johnson and his partner David Whitney in New Canaan CT.

Director Mark AC Brown and actor David Whitney talk about how they made their new indie film Guardians. We also chat about how Mark made a film for his degree but it was a great experiment and not to be seen again. How he wrote a feature script for Nu Image but the 'Expendables' ruined it and how it is best to write something to make yourself for free or on a micro budget with what you have available to you. How when making an indie film, continuity is not as important as the story. How the establishing scene of a character is so important. But don't waste time on drone shots. Then get the most amount of permissions you can get. And if not shoot anyway. Suzanne Smith - their DoP was a runner on a Brainehound short and worked her way up. Made short film Beard with David and Mark and proved herself as a brilliant DoP and How having great all rounders like Fred Fournier and Joe Starrs as editor and 1st AD respectively is vital as is keeping your ‘team' from your shorts/music videos and bringing them with you. With low budget movies you have to juggle and workaround peoples schedules and how 'Withnails' - Richard E Grant's marvelous book was an inspiration (as was The Wah Wah Diaries) When you are supposed to be doing he scene in 4 shots but end up doing it in one due to time constraints but it's one of the best moments in the film so it's not always best to stick to your shot lists. Why post can take so long when you are asking for favours on a micro budget film. How they learned from other filmmakers on how they distributed their films - Ben Cookson, Fizz and Ginger's Two Down and James Rumsey's Drunk on Love. In Detroit, Michigan sits a grand home with a gabled roof, arched windows and a beautiful rose hue emanates from the facade. This upscale dining establishment was once the David Whitney House and is known today simply as The Whitney. David Whitney, Jr. was such a successful lumber baron that people would remark that he was "the man who could out-lumber Paul Bunyan." He was one of the wealthiest men in America and he would leave his mark in Detroit in a very positive way. Some believe he remains in the home he had built in the afterlife. They seems to be other spirits at The Whitney as well. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of The Whitney! The Moment in Oddity was suggested by listener Teresa Slaven and features the Mortuary Railroad Station and This Day in History is by Richard Schaffer and features Pierre Barrière's Attempt to Assassinate King Henry IV of France. Our location was suggested by listener Emily Ridener and she provided pictures! A minister for 32 years he is currently the Pastor of Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church of Pasadena, Maryland. Nat and Dan rock up to the studio to find that HdP has managed to either break the studio or sell most of it for drugs, leaving only one microphone for them to huddle around. It’s an intimate gig, made even more intimate and far more awesome thanks to comedian, star of stage and screen and all-round gent Mr David Whitney who adds even more ideas to an ideas-heavy show this week – if there’s a sport, the guys have a way to make it even better... In other news: there’s a competition happening, listen ot find out what it is; Dan wants to run another competition, definitely one you don’t want to enter –or do you David has been reading about habits; the NFL East is worst division in the entire history of all professional sport and we’re not prone to hyperbole; insane punt returns are becoming the norm and records continue to tumble while Carolina just get things done; Dan comes up with some great ways to improve the game and encourage laterals; in the NBA the Cavs lead the East from the Pacers, the Warriors continue to lead the West; Cleveland went to Miami, where they always lose, and lost for the 10th straight time in South Beach; in the NHL Montreal lead the East from New York, Dallas lead the West from the streaking LA Kings; rough week for the Habs - they’ve lost three of five games since Paul Condon took over from Carey Price; out West it’s all Jeff Carter and Tyler Toffoli, as they beat everyone put in their way this week; loads of Mancave Mailbag goodness and much, much more...
Nat and Mike often fain happiness when Dan has to bow to his busy schedule and miss a show but this week Mike actually breaks into song. You've been warned. In other news: All-Pro (just) David Whitney brightens the studio with his presence; David's loyal support of the New York Football Giants kicks things off very nicely indeed; Mike talks police procedurals; Nat talks about the exploitative nature of wrestling; Iron Mike delivers a Manziel-free round-up; then a Kobe-free round-up; it's almost like he knows there are other players in their respective sports, who knew? Loads of great questions; HdP prepares a Twit or Twat for the guys and of course there's much, much more...
Nat and Dan are back in Camden and Mike appears to have vanished since Sunday. Luckily for them but sadly for fans of the After Dark spin-off not one but two fine gentlemen also turn up - recently-minted All-Pro (minus gold jacket) friend of the show David Whitney and new friend of the show Anthony Richardson, a writer and comedian whose prolific output includes... Bad British Sports COmmentary. Seemed like a win to us... In other news: lots of Way Wice; lots of the New York Football Giants; loads of good stuff from the Bodeans Mailbag; a great game from Dan and much, much, much more...
Nat and Dan are getting into the swing of pre-season and have decided to talk about it, record the results and put it on the internet. They have vague memories of doing this before but with someone else too so are over the moon when an extremely funny man who's a big fan of the New York Giants comes to the studio too. His name is David Whitney and they like him a lot. In other news: The show gets offered yet more advertising products, Nat cannot control his excitement at this; David talks booze and why you should love it; Dan talks about a time when he wished no-one had drunk a thing then the discussion turns to how to keep the right side of pissed on those long stints*; Johnny Football is a very naughty boy; Brian Orakpo, who had been mockingly doing Manziel’s ‘money’ symbol every thime he threw the ball away, said the gesture was hilarious; Jadeveon Clowney showed why he was first pick overall and he decimated the Atlantas running game; nothing in the NBA but Team USA beat Brazil in an exhibition game in Chicago, Derrick Rose returned, Anthony Davis put up 20 plus 4 blocks and 7 rebounds, KD pulled out and the team wore jerseys in support of Paul George; loads of Bodeans Mailbag goodness; a discussion on how to improve shit jokes and much, much more... *Americarnage does not endorse all-day drinking, mainly because we're lightweights.
Nat, Mike and Dan are pure athletes, able to accomplish any feat to which the human body is equal. Thing is, Mike isn't here this week so the conversation OBVIOUSLY turns to what the largest animal he could throw over a building might be. Adding substantially to this earnest debate is the simply brilliant Mr David Whitney, master of stand-up, acting and bagpipes. Mock if you dare, he's better than you. In other news: Everyone cares about Nat, which is nice; Americarnage is sending a Camden goth to the podcast awards in Vegas to collect our award for us, y'know, 'cos we're bound to win; the city of Atlanta gets a long discussion and even a little love; in the NFL the week started on Thanksgiving – the Lions destroyed the Packers and took control of the NFC North, more so when the Minnesota Vikings beat the Bears on Sunday despite their attempts to tie for the second time this season; Matt Flynn got sacked 7 times, DeAndre Levy picked him off for his 6th of the season; in the NBA Indiana lead the East, still, and they’re now enjoying the best start to the season in franchise history; Miami are 10 straight, but still in second and besides Washington, everyone else in the Eastern Conference has a losing record; in the West the Trailblazers lead from the Spurs. Last night the West met the East in Portland and despite Paul George putting up an insane career high of 43, the Pacers still lost thanks mainly to a Lamarcus Aldridge double double; in the Hockey Boston lead the East from Pittsburgh and Montreal; Chicago lead the West from san Jose and Anaheim; most of the chat is about last week’s law suit, with the backlash beginning apace. Don Cherry calls it a money grab, while Jeremy Roenick said of the players : "They can go after the league that they craved to be in since they were little kids and paid their salary,"; Dan says the internet is full of lies big-ticket players get discussed ferociously; loads of Bodeans Mailbag goodness and a gane to boot, what more do you need? Much, much more perhaps...?
Mike and Dan are gentle, sensitive and ferociously moral guys, despite often coming off as mostly the opposite of all those things. With Nat away on work-y travels they're brought more than up to strength by the fabulous David Whitney who brings, amongst many other things, the world's greatest laugh... In other news: Several films get thoroughly debated, including a detailed analysis of Grown-Ups 2; Mike's been watching Firefly; Lucozade cures AIDS; Football is back! Tebow gets a run out for the Patriots and managing only a 50% pass completion rate against the Eagles, for whom Michale Vick starred; Nick Foles fumbled and Riley Cooper managed to avoid calling anyone the N Word, more on that later; in Detroit, Sanchez started terribly – being picked off by rookie Ziggy Ansah, before he picked up and threw a TD; in better news for him Geno Smith looked shaky and rolled his ankle on a wobbly scramble; things happen in the baseball, Mike tells you about them; basketball is coming soon, Dan tells you more about that; Dan comes up with a cracking game based around smack-talk; a member of the Department of History, Race and Race Relations stars in the Bodeans Mailbag and the gang clarify some of their position on the whole Washington thing and much, much more...
Nat, Mike and Dan love discipline - flags, fines, police action - they love it all! After last week's deeply offensive outing Nat has decided that he's better off at the darts for ESPN and Mike appoints himself the new sheriff in town, come to clean up acts and take names. The first name he takes is of this week's guest, Giants fan and very funny man David Whitney. In other news: Dan mistakes Mike's injury for personal violation; Mike tests the limits of his love for Kelly-Ann; Wildcard weekend is over, but not before claiming some casualties; in Houston – entertainment was the casualty, as the Texans ground out a repeat of last year, beating the dogged Bengals; the Vikings surprise everyone by starting Joe Webb who started well but collapsed in a horrifying pile of misses and interceptions; Baltimore got all sentimental over the return of Chuck Pagano and Ray Lewis’ last home game ever. Playing with a bizarre metal claw, Lewis looked patchy as Ray Rice gave up two interceptions before the Ravens finally pulled away; RG3 lost out to Russell Wilson in Washington and may have lost more than the game; in the NBA Miami lead the East from New York, OKC lead the West from the LA Clippers who are back on form with two straight; the Bostol Celtics are busy slapping referees around; Atlanta Hawks GM Danny Ferry was fined 15,000 dollars for handing officials a copy of the game on DVD. It was deemed to be inappropriate interactions with officials; The NHL is back and likely to start a 48 game season on the 19th January after 16 hours of negotiations on Saturday; without boring you the details are: the players share of revenues is down from 57 to 50. The owners wanted them to take 46%; lots of fun from the Bodeans Mailbag and much, much more...
It all boils down to one question: To whom do the children belong? Some people think they belong to the state and their parents belong to the state as well. This perspective is horribly misguided and the ramifications on the family are destructive to the core. Today, I interview Pastor David Whitney from the Institute on the Constitution. He shares with us a historical perspective on the public school system and offers sound advice to parents on how to protect themselves and their children. The post Education Systems with David Whitney appeared first on Home Front with Cynthia Davis.
In this week’s episode I have my first professional comedian on the show! David has been a stand up for about 6 years now, and gives us his insight into how the comedy world works, and explains how he got into comedy and his hope and dreams for the future. A very enlightening episode
In the spirit of examining the big picture of 9-11, this broadcast features an informative overview of the Constitution with Constitutional expert Pastor David Whitney of the Institute on the Constitution, www.iotconline.com.
