On October 31, 1517, a monk named Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses on the door of the Wittenberg Cathedral in Germany. This day is often referred to as the spark that started the fire. For, out of the actions Martin Luther took that day in 1517 came an entire Protestant Reformation against Roman Catholic traditions, teaching, and authority. But what role has the Reformation played in church history since then? How has the Reformation helped Christians today in understanding their Bibles and knowing the Lord's will? These questions and more are answered in this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast. Join Dr. Richard Caldwell and Dr. Josh Philpot as they dive into the significance of the Protestant Reformation. Dr. Caldwell tells us that the most significant ongoing influence of the Reformation is represented in the principles and the truths, the doctrines, that were rediscovered. The Reformation didn't invent anything, so it isn't the beginning of anything in that sense. It was the rediscovery of gospel truth that had been buried under Roman Catholic tradition and teaching for nearly a thousand years. The greatest contributions of Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, and others were to drive people back to the source, to the Word of God. The main messages of those men and that time are commonly referred to as the 5 Solas, five Latin phrases that represent the core positions. They are Sola Scriptura, Sola Christus, Sola Gratia, Sola Fide, and Sola Deo Gloria. Each sola represents biblical Christianity that the Reformers emphas...
Reformation Day, celebrated on October 31, commemorates Martin Luther's pivotal act in 1517 when he posted the 95 Theses on the Wittenberg Cathedral's door, sparking the Protestant Reformation against the prevailing Catholic traditions. This episode of the Straight Truth Podcast with Dr. Richard Caldwell and Dr. Josh Philpot explores the Reformation's enduring impact, particularly the rediscovery of key gospel truths represented by the five Solas- Sola Scriptura, Sola Christus, Sola Gratia, Sola Fide, and Sola Deo Gloria. These principles, emphasizing salvation by grace through faith in Christ and the authority of Scripture, fueled a revival of biblical preaching and a movement for making the Bible accessible to laypeople in their own language, a legacy revered and continued in the Christian faith today.

We live on a pluralistic world. To many, one choice seems just as good as another. Is it really that wide open? The world has differing opinions of Christ. Some are competing claims about Him. Who do you say that He is?
We continue our two week study of the foundations of the reformation and why our faith is so unique.
Sola Christus-- only Jesus. Is a critical piece of doctrine we often try to jump through because it seems so simple. But is skipping through the most important part what we are called to do? Central Baptist Church in Kansas City Sunday sermon with Jesse. Hebrews 8:13-9:14
We believe you have direct access to God because of Jesus. You don't need a priest, or a pastor. You need faith in Christ and a community to confess to. Solas Christus reminds us that we are not Christian because of something we do but because of something done for and to us. Jesus Alone has saved us. We do not have to fear or feel insecure about what happens after we die because we have placed our hope and trust in Christ alone! For entire sermon notes, tap here: http://zionclearlake.org/1-15-23
The Reformation is often summarized by the five Solas—Sola Scriptura, Sola Gratia, Sola Fide, Sola Christus, Soli Deo Gloria. Each one is a bold confession, each one is a battlefield, and each one finds expression in John 8. Nevertheless, as Jesus teaches these eternal truths restored in the Reformation, the five are reduced to one: In Christ alone, the Word of God comes creating faith and granting grace. This is God glorifying Christ, and in him God alone is glorified. All who believe this truth are freed from sin, death, and the devil. They will walk in the light of life forever. Thank you for joining us for Reformation worship to receive and celebrate the freedom we have in the Son of God.

We're continuing our NEW series for the month of October! This week we're talking about another hero of the Protestant Reformation. As we mentioned, this was a time when Christians within the church decided to stand up for what they believed by going AGAINST the church! Sounds crazy, right? But it actually made a LOT of sense! Special Episode this week, with our first book review. We are giving an overview of the book "Just Thinking: About the State" by Darrell Harrison and Virgil Walker, the creators and hosts of the Just Thinking Podcast. We have been listening and greatly blessed by this podcast, the amount of research, thought and preparation Darrell and Virgil put into each episode and to dissect and unpack each cultural or social topic and point back to scripture and the Gospel as our highest authority and God as our source of truth. NOTES: This Weeks Whiskey: Clyde Mays Straight Rye Whiskey - Alabama - 94 proof Buy Just Thinking: About The State - https://press.founders.org/shop/just-thinking-about-the-state/ Book Chapters: Government Socialism Capitalism A Social Savior The Born Alive Act Black Lives Matter and Abortion Politics and the Black Church Reparations The Equality Act of 2019 Elections This is book is important for several reasons. It rightly identifies the problem (sin) It is interpreting our current times and social issues through a biblical lens. It is properly identifying and dissecting the sin that is at the center of major social issues. It is applying scriptural truth to real world problems (racism, marriage, sexuality, divorce, etc) It is calling for significant increase in biblical literacy It calls for men and women to engage in worship of Christ, as opposed to worship of a political party. It calls for children of God to disengage from the sin of partiality It emphasizes the Imago Dei It rightly places scripture into a category of one “Sola Scriptura” Sola scriptura Sola Christus Sola fide Sola gratia Sol deo gloria i. These five statements of the evangelical faith lay at the center of what distinguished the theology of the Reformation from the theology of the Roman Catholic church in the 16th century. Sola scriptura is the belief that because Scripture is God's inspired Word, it is the only inerrant, sufficient, and final authority for the church. Solus Christus is the assertion that Christ alone is the basis on which the ungodly are justified in God's sight. Sola fide maintains that the believer receives the redemption Christ has accomplished only through faith. Sola gratia proclaims that all of our salvation, from beginning to end, is by grace and grace alone. Because of these things, the Reformers held fast to the phrase soli Deo gloria, that only God receives glory for our salvation. (et al. "It's all about Jesus" is a motto of ours at Harbor Church. In this sermon by Pastor Seth Winterhalter, we learn about the reformation cry of "Sola Christus" or "Christ Alone." What does "Christ Alone" mean for your life? Do you know who Jesus is? What he has done? And what he is doing today? May our lives be all about Jesus.

Jason Cherry | Five hundred years ago this October, in an effort to call out the theological abuses and false teachings within the Catholic Church, Martin Luther, a German theology professor, publicly posted what came to be known as The 95 Theses; a list of rebukes aimed at Catholic policies and procedures. What began as a local protest, quickly grew into a worldwide dismantling of the institutional church, ultimately resulting in what is known today as Protestant Christianity.
We all wanna be happy and wanna have joy—the more we trust in Christ alone—not ourselves, or what we do, or what we know, or even what we want—the more we will come to realize that He will never let us down. Romans 5:1-10, John 8:31–38
