Thinking Transportation: Engaging Conversations about Transportation Innovations
Tracing its origins to the Air Commerce Act of 1926, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) was established in 1967 as an independent agency inside the U.S. DOT charged with investigating why transportation accidents happen. In 1974, it became an independent federal agency separate from the DOT. Although largely focused on aviation, the agency also investigates roadway, marine, pipeline, and railroad accidents, as well as those involving commercial space. Today, we talk with Robert L. Sumwalt—currently executive director of the Boeing Center for Aviation and Aerospace Safety at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and former chair of the NTSB—about that agency's ongoing mission to investigate accidents and recommend improvements that make travel safer for everyone who uses our transportation network.

We'll trade you a four-pound sledge and a twitchy STi for the time to get more episodes published... This one's full of traffic thinking, with a knobby-tired look at why good alignment matters (and dying end-links don't). There's an in-depth analysis of how it's essential to be in an offensive state of mind when commanding your place in the flow (and why bubbling yourself off from those selfsame traffic physics makes you the problem we've been waiting for). There's also a few thoughts about how "Broken Windows Policing" could do wonders for incompetent motoring. Don't fret: how about some Amon Tobin, Die Krupps, Deep Purple and Blue Oyster Cult (no "White Room" or "Yellow Submarine", however), plus killer Bronco audio, Mom's Camry, cars in garages and TVs in dashboards.

Send us a textBalancing the chaos of work and life can feel like a high-wire act without a safety net, especially when weekends are commandeered by job demands. Join us as we kick things off with some humor and honesty about our frantic workweeks and the critical need for personal time amidst it all. We share stories of tracking hurricanes affecting loved ones and introduce you to "Lieutenant Dan," a man whose decision to stay on his boat during a hurricane unexpectedly catapulted him to public attention, GoFundMe success, and a whirlwind of controversy. From there, we dive into the murky waters of workplace drug testing, questioning the fairness of current policies on alcohol and cannabis use. We discuss personal stories that highlight the inconsistencies, like a relative's refusal of medical treatment after a health scare. We don't shy away from sharing our own tech mishaps during recording, revealing the struggle of piecing together an episode without a dedicated tech team, and the humorous notion of having a project that starts with a Yeti Rambler and aims to trade up to something much more significant. The episode doesn't stop at personal stories and technical blunders; we also tackle futuristic topics like robotics and the promise of solar roadways. Picture a world where robots cut your grass or serve you at your favorite restaurant, and roads made of solar panels power our cities. We explore the economic implications of these technologies while offering light-hearted musings on the influence of figures like Elon Musk. From the intricacies of workplace accident reporting to the potential societal shifts with solar roadways, this episode is packed with stories and discussions that promise to engage and entertain.Cammo Comedy Show Podcase Military shenanigans, pranks & mistakes! In this episode of Expanded Perspectives, the guys kick things off by discussing the upcoming deer season and their plans to visit the Texas State Fair. Kyle shares his love for donuts and chocolate milk, admitting that he has to avoid donut shops to resist temptation consciously. Then, the show turns into the strange as an upstate New York resident recounts a sighting his partner had, followed by the witness's eerie encounter with an upright goat-human hybrid. Next, an Oklahoma teen has a chilling experience when he wakes up for a drink and spots a red-eyed humanoid outside his window, radiating malevolence. In another disturbing encounter, a young boy faces a strange humanoid figure crouched in the corner of his bedroom, its features unnervingly inhuman. After the break, Cam delves into bizarre encounters with what can only be described as "Road Trolls." These unsettling creatures, explored in detail by author Jerry D. Coleman in his books Strange Highways and More Strange Highways, are frequently reported by truckers traveling along dark highways in the Southern and Midwestern U.S. Witnesses often describe a prominent, hairy, troll-like figure dressed in tattered clothing, sometimes with a wooden peg leg. What begins as a sighting of a drifter quickly escalates into something far more disturbing as the true nature of these road-dwelling creatures becomes apparent. All of this and more is on this installment of Expanded Perspectives! On January 11, 2020, in Lubbock, a driver from the opposing lane of travel crossed the median while emergency crews were working the scene of an accident. Firefighter Lieutenant Eric Hill and Police Officer Nicholas Reyna were killed. Firefighter/Paramedic Matt Dawson suffered many broken bones across his legs, arms, and torso, a cracked skull along with multiple orbital fractures, and a traumatic brain injury. After working tirelessly to recover, Dawson also ultimately passed away in 2024. In this episode, Scott visits with Lubbock Firefighter Brady Robinette about the use of specialized helmets by first responders working roadway incidents. “If those involved were wearing helmets constructed according to standards designed to protect their heads against the impacts they experienced, would the results have been different? Would the head injuries have been less serious?” Those questions have led Robinette to make it his mission to educate local officials on the issue. Todd Curtis and John Goglia discuss the February 9, 2024 crash of a Challenger 604 jet on I75 in Florida. The plane landed on the road, but then crashed into a wall, killing the pilot and copilot. John and Todd discuss why a better outcome was possible. The jet, which had three crew members and two passengers, was nearing the end of a flight from Columbus, Ohio, when the flight crew declared an emergency to air traffic control. They lost their engines and could not make it to the airport.Little official information was available at the time of the recording. It was not known whether the aircraft was equipped with a cockpit voice recorder or flight data recorder. The engines appear to be intact, which will help with the investigation.John and Todd compare this accident to a 1997 Southern Airways DC9 crash in New Hope, Georgia. In that accident the crew was able to land on a road, and the aircraft caught fire after running into obstructions near the road.In both accidents there were survivors among the cabin crew and passengers. Todd and John encourage pilots to assess their options for making an emergency landing so they are prepared to take action if an emergency occurs.
