This week we bring the series about the reformation before the reformation to an end. It is time to take stock. What changes did 20 years of opposition to the established church and 15 years of war bring to Bohemia? How did Jan Hus, Jan Želivský, Wenceslas Koranda and Petr Chelčický influence Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, Müntzer and von Hutten? How did Zizka's reform impact the Swiss mercenaries and the German Landsknechte? The music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by Michel Rondeau under Common Creative Licence 3.0.As always:Homepage with maps, photos, transcripts and blog: www.historyofthegermans.comIf you wish to support the show go to: Support • History of the Germans PodcastFacebook: @HOTGPod Threads: @history_of_the_germans_podcastBluesky: @hotgpod.bsky.socialInstagram: history_of_the_germansTwitter: @germanshistoryTo make it easier for you to share the podcast, I have created separate playlists for some of the seasons that are set up as individual podcasts. they have the exact same episodes as in the History of the Germans, but they may be a helpful device for those who want to concentrate on only one season.

Embracing the Lord's Supper as a Joyful and Communal Event Luke 15.23 “Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate.” This is why we come here—to celebrate! Part of that celebration is what we call ‘the Lord's Supper'. Another part is prayer - what can we celebrate in prayer this morning? Let's pray together... Part 2: Let's have a feast and celebrate Hand out capsules at start Introduction Today, we will focus more deeply on the Lord's Supper / Communion. We will take more time over it after some teaching and discussion. QUESTION: What is the Lord's Supper? QUESTION: Why do we do it? What is it for? 1. What Did Jesus Do and Expect His Followers to Do, and Why? Luke 22.19-20 “And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” ‘do this' - what is the ‘this'? Why - in remembrance of me What remembering? His servant, sacrificial heart. His acceptance. His love. Leads to - fresh inspiration out of gratitude 2. What Did the Early Church Do and Why? They gathered on the first day of the week to break bread Acts 2.46 “Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,”- Acts 20.7 “On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul began talking to them, intending to leave the next day, and he prolonged his message until midnight.”. . Proclaimed Christ 1 Corinthians 11.26 “For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.” Demonstrated and strengthened their unity 1 Corinthians 11.27 “So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.” Context - eating together as Lord's Supper while being selfish and mean to one another About not respecting Christ's body by treating one another in a Christ-like way Easy to have a smouldering resentment towards someone at church when taking communion while looking at the back of their head, or in a large church where you can easily avoid them Different when sitting around a table next to them or opposite them. Resurrection day Probably weekly Involved a meal Not restricted to that? 3. Traditions Around the Lord's Supper Traditions and further theological understanding Transubstantiation, the idea that the bread and wine become the actual body and blood of Christ, based on one scripture. Preserving mysticism developed into a kind of magical-ism Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli, had different interpretations. One cup or many? One prayer or several? Silence, music, prayer.... Wine or not? Who can serve it? Priests? New Testament tells us that we are all priests 1 Peter 2.9 “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.” Who can take it? Sometimes, children or laypeople were denied the elements, but is that what Jesus intended? 4. Conclusions for Us Here and Now Five key issues It is about Jesus: Remembering Him is the primary purpose. It is a community meal: We gather together as a family of faith. We feast on Christ—together: It strengthens our community unity. ‘Unworthy' is not about sin per se: It's about treating each other with Christ-like love. Strictly speaking, no one is 'worthy'! Not about the elements or the rituals: Focus on Jesus and community. Conclusion We eat together, with Jesus, as sinners Luke 5.29 “Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them.” Luke 14.13 “But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,” Jesus ate with anyone who would eat with him. He would come to your place for dinner - only problem- he would bring all his friends! Last supper: Apostles would desert him, Peter deny him; Judas betrayed him Any questions or brief comments? Discussion with neighbour about anything God revealed to you today Open prayer I pray after 10 minutes Break bread and give out - what difference does it make that I do this? As we conclude, let's take time to pray, reflect, and sing. Let's prepare our hearts before we take the bread and wine, remembering the love and sacrifice of Jesus and the unity we share in Him. Prayer Please add your comments on this week's topic. We learn best when we learn in community.  Do you have a question about teaching the Bible? Is it theological, technical, practical? On October 31, 1517, a monk named Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses on the door of the Wittenberg Cathedral in Germany. This day is often referred to as the spark that started the fire. For, out of the actions Martin Luther took that day in 1517 came an entire Protestant Reformation against Roman Catholic traditions, teaching, and authority. But what role has the Reformation played in church history since then? How has the Reformation helped Christians today in understanding their Bibles and knowing the Lord's will? These questions and more are answered in this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast. Join Dr. Richard Caldwell and Dr. Josh Philpot as they dive into the significance of the Protestant Reformation.   Dr. Caldwell tells us that the most significant ongoing influence of the Reformation is represented in the principles and the truths, the doctrines, that were rediscovered. The Reformation didn't invent anything, so it isn't the beginning of anything in that sense. It was the rediscovery of gospel truth that had been buried under Roman Catholic tradition and teaching for nearly a thousand years. The greatest contributions of Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, and others were to drive people back to the source, to the Word of God. The main messages of those men and that time are commonly referred to as the 5 Solas, five Latin phrases that represent the core positions. However, just as quick was his rise to prominence as his fall from grace. After dying in battle, many of his contemporaries distanced themselves from him, and despite being contemporary with Luther, he receives only a small fraction of the attention other Reformers do in current studies of the Reformation. Dr. Bruce Gordon, Titus Street Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Yale University, joins me in this episode to discuss the life and legacy of Ulrich Zwingli, which he outlines in more detail in his groundbreaking work God's Armed Prophet. I grew up around Frederick, MD where I eventually ended up working my first job at a church. They made the mistake of letting me try my hand at teaching, and instantly I fell in love. That set me on a path for further education, and I'm currently a student at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL, studying theology. Reformers and Congregational Singing

When the various movements of Reformation came the worship services of the churches were transformed. Out with the old form of singing by choirs and monks and other clergy and their musical instruments. Any thing that was only for entertainment and passive worship in Latin was to go or be transformed into the language of the people in a style that was easy to memorize and sing. Based on the principle that what the church did in the worship of God must be based on the Scripture alone two schools of thought emerged. One could do in the service what was glorifying to God and upbuilding to the church if it was not prohibited by Scripture. This normative principle was followed by Luther and later the Anglicans.  Luther himself wrote 37 hymns many based on the Psalms but all containing truths of Scripture. This was a major way the Reformation truths were taught and spread. The second principle followed by the Reformed such as Zwingli and Calvin is known as the regulative principle. Therefore one could only do in the congregational worship what was clearly authorized by the Scripture. So at first due to reaction to what was considered idolatrous no singing was done. Calvin however made the restoration of congregation singing a condition of his return to Geneva. He introduced the singing of psalms with the human voice only. He produced the Geneva Psalter. The scripture authorizes and commands singing in the assembly gatherings.  Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, Ephesians 5:191 Corinthians 14:15  What is the outcome then? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also.Hebrews 2:12 applies Psalm 22:22 to Jesus when it says, “In the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.Bible Insights with Wayne ConradContact: 8441 Hunnicut Rd Dallas, Texas 75228email: Att. À cet égard, existe-t-il un bloc papiste ou cette idée relève-t-elle d'un fantasme ? Comment le parti huguenot monte ses réseaux de correspondance et d'actions à travers l'Europe et dans quel but ? Peut-on parler d'une diplomatie huguenote, et comment le roi de France réagit-il au fait que ses sujets protestants agissent avec des puissances étrangères ? Doit-on enfin parler d'une propagande protestante, et quel a été le résultat de cette politique européenne ? In the early 1500's the various church reform movements led by Luther, Zwingli and Tyndale tore apart the political landscape of Europe. Although many recognized the corruption and moral laxity of the Roman Catholic Church, they only advocated  clean- up  actions within. Why was it necessary to separte from Papal Rome? At an Imperial Diet at Speyer John Calvin's letter to the Emperor Charles V was read. In it he sets forth the necessity of reformation and why the Protestants are not guilty of schism. On the contrary, the Papists had so corrupted the church in the vital areas of worship  and salvation that a total reformation was needed. The church needed to return to the Bible as its standard and authority.  So the Protestant Reformation was a necessity in order to rescue the church from the fatal disease of extraneous doctrine and practice that had engulfed the Roman Catholic Church. Bible Insights with Wayne ConradContact: 8441 Hunnicut Rd Dallas, Texas 75228email: Att. Martin Luther and Huldrich Zwingli were the first of the Reformers in the 16th century. Both were Roman Catholic clergy. Luther was a monk and theology teacher; Zwingli a parish priest. Both of them obtained hot off the press a copy of  Erasmus's  Greek New Testament in 1516. Encountering the raw text of the Bible in Greek helped uncover and correct mistranslations in the Latin Vulgate.  Ultimately Luther was converted as he came to understand Romans 1:17. Zwingli became greatly influenced from preaching through the text of the Gospel of Matthew. After he recovered from near death in the plague of 1519 his breakthrough is recorded in his "plague poem." God's Word is powerful and works the miracle of regeneration and conversion as the Holy Sprit moves in the heart of people.Bible Insights with Wayne ConradContact: 8441 Hunnicut Rd Dallas, Texas 75228email: Att. The different conception of human nature and our relationship with God held by Protestant reformers such as Martin Luther, Zwingli, and Calvin led to a completely different perception of mysticism.
