My guest today is Dan Nicholson, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at George Mason University, here to talk about his little book, What Is Life? Revisited. Erwin Schrödinger's What Is Life is a famous book that people point to as having predicted DNA and influenced and inspired many well-known biologists ushering in the molecular biology revolution. But Schrödinger was a physicist, not a biologist, and he spent very little time and effort toward understanding biology. What was he up to, why did he write this "famous little book"? Schrödinger had an agenda, a physics agenda. He wanted to save the older deterministic version of quantum physics from the new indeterministic version. When Dan was on the podcast a few years ago, we talked about the machine view of biological systems, how everything has become a "mechanism", and how that view fails to capture what modern science is actually telling us, that organisms are unlike machines in important ways. That work of Dan's led him down this path to Schrödinger's What Is Life, which he argues was a major contributor to that machine metaphor so ubiquitous today in biology. One of the reasons I'm interested in this kind of work is because the cognitive sciences, including neuroscience and artificial intelligence, inherited this mechanistic perspective, and swallowed it so hard that if you don't include the word "mechanism" in your research paper, you're vastly decreasing your chances of getting your work published, when in fact the mechanistic perspective is one super useful perspective among many.
Welcome back to another episode of the Online Warriors Podcast! Happy Halloween! This week were going to revisit Schrodinger's Cat Burglar! We'll get an inside look at the development of Schrödinger's Cat Burglar. Schrödinger's Cat Burglar - Tell us a about yourself - I understand you're an animator turned game designer, so kind of walk us through your personal journey a little bit? (0:54) - When developing the game, did you start with the story and character animations, or did you jump right into the programming and let the game sort of build itself? (3:57) - Do you have any personal attachment to cats or animals in general that might have influenced the creation of Mittens? (5:23) - The game clearly suggest heavy use of quantum physics. Beyond the classic Schrodinger's cat example, did you find yourself really studying this topic to deepen your own understanding and then use that learning to create new challenges/ abilities? (6:18) - The demo gives players a taste of what's to come. What are you most excited about for players to experience in the full version of the game? (8:52) - Are there any other animals in the game like rats since they are common test subjects? Does lazy Susan have abilities for example? (10:31) - You started this project as a solo developer, but your team has grown over time. What were some pros and cons to working alone versus having a small team behind your work? (12:01) - So, you described some moments during the development process when you had to step back and rethink a design choice or direction. How did you approach making those tough decisions? (15:20) - *Schrödinger's Cat Burglar* allows for both couch and remote co-op. How did you approach designing the gameplay with multiplayer in mind, and what sort of challenges did that present? (18:11) - How did you approach designing the various puzzles in the game? What was the process of making them challenging but fair? (19:59) - For others interested in making their own game, any words of wisdom? (21:52) - Any last words he wants the listeners to know - when we might be able to expect a release date? Today's episode is a bit heavier than past episodes of this show. I have been inspired by life and death and the beautiful art we make in between. From an amazing Twenty One Pilots concert to the loss of a friend's relative, these past few weeks have opened my eyes again. Be intentional about loving and appreciating your friends and family, let the fire of inspiration drive you, but don't be afraid to slow down and savour the moment. Life is precious. Geno Suarez Shanked Grand Slam Proves Your Kid Needs Bat Speed TrainingWe first take a deep dive into MLB's new Amateur Recovery Period (October 15th-January 15th), breaking down why the league is using its leverage to force rest and development time for high school players. The episode pivots to Shohei Ohtani's transcendent postseason performance (two 116+mph batted balls, three homers, pumping hundreds on the mound), using it to illustrate why youth players should train as two-way athletes and move around the field instead of getting pigeonholed. Deven connects Geno Suarez's late, shanked home run to the bat speed training argument, then tackles the Mariners' devastating Game 7 loss and Dan Wilson's old-school closer decision. The core of the episode centers on Orion Kerkring's throwing error and Rob Thompson's response—hand on chest, picking the kid up—which Deven holds up as the coaching standard, contrasting it with his own past failures as "kind of a dick" in games. He challenges coaches directly: when a kid fails publicly and the game is already lost, how will you respond? The episode closes on A-Rod's commentary, national personalities who can't celebrate the game, and a preview of the tongue-in-cheek "How to Ruin a Hitter/Pitcher" video series.Timestamps00:00 – Intro, AxeBat code & first vacation in 20 years04:01 – MLB's Amateur Recovery Period: October 15th-January 15th breakdown10:45 – Fatigue, super-compensation & why kids get hurt without rest13:41 – On-ramping 101: marathon analogy & 4-6 week build-up protocols19:03 – Showcase economics vs. player health: "matters concerning health comes first"22:16 – Shohei Ohtani: 116.9mph, 469ft & the billion-out-of-a-billion performance30:17 – Two-way paradigm & moving kids around the field: why Danny got varsity reps34:26 – The disaffected right fielder stuck there "all the mother effin time"37:07 – Geno Suarez shank homer: low smash factor argument for bat speed41:15 – Dinger to Springer & Dan Wilson's old school closer decision46:12 – Orion Kerkring play: Rob Thompson's hand on his chest & what coaching should look like53:32 – "What's happened, happened": the game is lost—how will you respond?56:04 – A-Rod commentary & why national personalities hate the state of the game58:04 – Outro: "How to Ruin a Hitter/Pitcher" video series previewLinksStart training with Driveline now with Academy Flex:https://www.drivelinebaseball.com/academy-flex/Develop bat speed with our Youth Power Bat for just $99!https://www.drivelinebaseball.com/product/youth-power-trainer/Skills That Scale: The Complete Youth Baseball Training Manual is out now!https://www.drivelinebaseball.com/product/skills-that-scale-training-manual/Train bat speed and barrel accuracy with our Youth Underload Smash bat - just $79!https://www.drivelinebaseball.com/product/youth-underload-smash-bat/⬇️ Host ⬇️Deven Morgan https://twitter.com/devenmorgan

The Toronto Blue Jays are going to the World Series! Justin and Patrick share their game 7 experiences, discuss how this Blue Jays team got here, and how they can win against the Los Angeles Dodgers. We'll be back again on Friday once the rosters are announced to preview games 1 and 2!
American League Championship Series Game Seven RecapSeattle Mariners @ Toronto Blue JaysIt all comes down to this. Game Seven. One team looking for their first AL Pennant in 32 years. The other looking for their first pennant ever. The Blue Jays survived game six thanks to a gutsy outing from youngster Trey Yesavage, as well as homers from Addison Barger and Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. Manager John Schneider will hand the ball to former Cy Young winner Shane Bieber, who delivered a strong start in game three. Expect the leash to be short, and for everyone outside of Yesavage to be available. On the offensive side, do not be shocked if postseason legend George Springer makes a mark, as he often has in previous game sevens. The Mariners have never been closer to a World Series, but they missed their first opportunity to advance. And since they didn't take care of business in Seattle, this is their last shot. Rodríguez, Raleigh, Naylor, and Suárez have done their part at the plate, but the rest of the lineup has practically been nonexistent in this series. If they want to close this series out, the big bats will need some help. Despite getting shelled in game three, George Kirby will take the mound in a winner-take-all game, as he did against Detroit in the ALDS. It will be his first ever playoff start on the road, which may cause some jitters for the righty. Manager Dan Wilson has a lot of options out of the bullpen; however, they've been heavily taxed in the postseason so far. Gabe Speier and Eduard Bazardo have been used in nearly every game, and their effectiveness has waned. The big question is how many outs can Andrés Muñoz get, and will the Mariners have a lead when he enters?Game Seven, here we go!Seattle Radio KIRO - Rick Rizzs and Aaron GoldsmithToronto Radio SN590 - Ben Shulman and Chris LerouxAudio clips from MLB.tvAs always, thank you to Baseball Reference and SABR for statistics, box scores, background information, and much, much more.Catch you next time,P.C.O.

Ron takes us on a tour of his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA, and Luke Bryan's "That's My Kind of Night" is our JAM OF THE WEEK! This one's a real humdinger! Give us a listen, folks. Hello! Here's a short teaser for the final episode in our De Valera series. Over on Head Stuff+ we did more of a deep dive into his birth (and his dad), the so called "Dev's Vice Act" (which led to a good Dundalk man getting fined for shifting), Dev's relationship with the physicist Erwin Schrödinger, and his ultimate legacy with the Mother & Baby homes, Haughey, and Bertie. If you want to hear the rest of this episode, as well as all our old bonus content (Bertie / Sean Quinn / the FAI etc.), all our Film Club episodes, remastered versions of related Dev / Collins episodes, and ad free versions of every episode, you can get it all for ~€5 by following this link to Headstuff+ Learn more about your ad choices. Robert Abel, chief scientific officer at Schrödinger, says advanced computational tools are changing the pace and accuracy of drug discovery. In a recent episode of The Top Line podcast, Abel outlined three areas where AI and machine learning are making the greatest impact: understanding disease biology, predicting protein structures and designing drug molecules. Schrödinger’s platform uses physics-based simulations alongside AI to evaluate millions of molecules in days, compared with the thousands traditionally synthesized in a year. Abel pointed to real-world results, including a program that reached a clinical trial candidate in just 10 months — far faster than industry averages. He said the technology also helps overcome challenges such as improving drug selectivity and reducing the need for animal testing, aligning with FDA priorities. Abel will share more insights during his upcoming talk at AAPS PharmSci 360 in San Antonio this November. His session abstract is available here. This week, James and Antony kick things off with a wild story out of New York City: ATMs spitting out millions in cash thanks to a government blunder. From there, they turn to political absurdities, including a congressman who thinks presidential term limits are optional. Finally, the guys dive deep into recession talk—what it really means, how it's measured, and why even the experts can't agree. Along the way, they cut through media spin, call out political nonsense, and remind listeners why economic reality is always more complicated than the headlines. Learn more about your ad choices.
