Today, Bob begins this new week by remembering that today is Memorial Day here in the United States, where we remember those who have died in the service of our country. He then turns his attention to the “cheap grace” often sold to us by many of today's “fallen churches.” This begins a theme that we will be talking about more this week. Now, do you believe in this ministry? What is the meaning of the parable of the wicked servant? What would you say to those who hurl accusations of cheap grace, hyper-grace, and easy believism? It feels like some worship services are way over the top! What are your thoughts on worship?
DOING LIFE: Daily Devotions For Finding Peace in Stressful Times
Born again means WANTING to be obedient and demonstrate the love of Christ to others
We read Zechariah 9–11 and watch prophecy build a future picture that lands directly on Jesus, from the humble King on a donkey to the thirty pieces of silver tied to betrayal. We also wrestle with what that price tag says about our hearts and why Bonhoeffer's warning about cheap grace still stings. • reading Zechariah's oracle of judgment and rescue across the region • the coming King described as humble and peaceful while riding a donkey • God's promise to gather and strengthen His people like a shepherd • the acted-out shepherd lesson and the breaking of the staffs • thirty pieces of silver and the potter connection as a foreshadowing of Judas • the question of how we value Jesus' sacrifice on the cross • Bonhoeffer's definition of cheap grace and why it distorts discipleship • a challenge to respond to grace with surrender rather than flippancy At outloudbible.com, you can find free resources to help you study the Bible. Friends, this week we're diving into something that's been eating at me for a while now—how the architects of Christian nationalism have had the audacity to claim Dietrich Bonhoeffer as one of their own. I'm talking about Project 2025 invoking "costly grace" as if Bonhoeffer wasn't writing about them. Here's the thing: when Bonhoeffer penned those famous words in 1937, he wasn't crafting a devotional for suburban book clubs—he was running an illegal seminary under Nazi surveillance, training pastors who were forfeiting their careers, their pensions, and their safety to follow Jesus instead of the Führer. The German Christians of his day fused faith with national identity, blessed political power, and demanded loyalty to a strongman who promised to make their country great again. Sound familiar? The brutal irony is that those who now quote Bonhoeffer are functionally aligned with the very forces he resisted—they're the German Christians quoting the Confessing Church, and that's about as theologically obtuse as Caesar celebrating the cross while forgetting he's the one who put Jesus on it. Costly grace is still available, y'all—it just actually has to cost something. UPCOMING ONLINE LENT CLASS: Jesus in Galilee w/ John Dominic Crossan What can we actually know about Jesus of Nazareth? And, what difference does it make? This Lenten class begins where all of Dr. John Dominic Crossan's has work begins: with history. What was actually happening in Galilee in the 20s CE? What did Herod Antipas' transformation of the "Sea of Galilee" into the commercial "Sea of Tiberias" mean for peasant fishing communities? Why did Jesus emerge from John's baptism movement proclaiming God's Rule through parables—and what made that medium so perfectly suited to that message? Only by understanding what Jesus' parables meant then can we wrestle with what they might demand of us now. The class is donation-based, including 0, so join, get info, and join up here. Is it possible that many believers have settled for something less than what God offers? What does it truly mean to move beyond simply believing into actively following? Drawing from Dietrich Bonhoeffer's concept of "cheap grace," this exploration challenges the difference between easy believism and genuine discipleship. When Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee and simply said "follow me," fishermen left their nets immediately—but how many others heard the same invitation and chose to stay where they were? What might be holding you back from stepping out of the boat? Recorded Sunday, October 12th, 2025

In this powerful message, Pastor Guy breaks down:
Today, Bob takes on the thorny issue of what Bob calls the “cheap grace entertainment churches” that are filling the landscape formerly held by Christ-Centric and faithful churches. It's not just the churches that have pivoted to openly rejecting and teaching another gospel; it is the ones that have the appearance of truth but are selling the world a lie. It's time to call them out, and Bob does. Now, do you believe in this ministry?
