Many Christians desire a deeper daily walk with God, yet it is easy to fall into a routine that leaves our spiritual life untouched. In this episode of "Abiding Begins in the Morning," we explore what it truly means to practice daily Christian discipleship and move beyond a comfortable, surface-level faith.Drawing from recent prayer request themes, Dietrich Bonhoeffer's The Cost of Discipleship, key NIV Scripture passages (John 8, Luke 9), and Ralph Spaulding Cushman's morning devotional poetry, this episode covers:Cheap Grace vs. Costly Grace: Understanding Jesus' call to deny self, take up your cross daily, and hold to His Word (John 8:31–32).Morning Prayer Routine & Anchor Moments: How starting your morning in quiet prayer and Bible study protects your heart from daily stress and distraction.Faith in Action: How abiding in Christ every morning transforms your daily relationships and models biblical love (John 13:35).Whether you are looking to build a consistent morning quiet time, deepen your daily Bible study, or live out an intentional faith, this episode offers practical spiritual encouragement for your daily walk.Subscribe and listen weekly for fresh reflections on biblical discipleship, daily prayer, and living God's Word.Share the WordIf this episode encouraged you, please consider sharing it with a friend and leaving a rating or review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. MY Devotional: Daily Encouragement from Leading The Way

Satan's deception is subtle: he entices people into slavery by calling it freedom. In today's episode of the MY Devotional Podcast, Dr. Michael Youssef turns to 2 Peter 2:17–22 to warn believers against false teachers who twist God's grace into a license for sin. Peter exposes the danger of a counterfeit freedom that promises liberty while leading people back into bondage. Scripture makes clear that before Christ, we were slaves to sin—but through His saving power, we have been set free from that merciless master. Christian freedom is not the ability to indulge every desire; it is the power, by the Holy Spirit, to say no to unrighteousness and yes to joyful obedience. Dr. Youssef reminds us that cheap grace is not Biblical grace. Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commands.” True freedom is found in belonging to the Son, serving Him with a whole heart, and walking in holiness. It is never too late to receive Christ's freedom. Ask Him to free you, train your heart to reject unrighteousness, and live today as one who is truly free indeed. Prayer: Lord, I rejoice in the freedom You have secured for me in Christ—freedom to live in the peace and joy of holiness. Show me how I can serve You today. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.  “They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for ‘people are slaves to whatever has mastered them'” (2 Peter 2:19).  Learn more in Dr. Michael A. Youssef's sermon It Is Never Too Late, The Curse of Compromise: LISTEN NOW | WATCH NOW   The voice you hear on the MY Devotional podcast is digitally generated with Dr. Youssef's permission. We read Zechariah 9–11 and watch prophecy build a future picture that lands directly on Jesus, from the humble King on a donkey to the thirty pieces of silver tied to betrayal. We also wrestle with what that price tag says about our hearts and why Bonhoeffer's warning about cheap grace still stings. • reading Zechariah's oracle of judgment and rescue across the region • the coming King described as humble and peaceful while riding a donkey • God's promise to gather and strengthen His people like a shepherd • the acted-out shepherd lesson and the breaking of the staffs • thirty pieces of silver and the potter connection as a foreshadowing of Judas • the question of how we value Jesus' sacrifice on the cross • Bonhoeffer's definition of cheap grace and why it distorts discipleship • a challenge to respond to grace with surrender rather than flippancy  At outloudbible.com, you can find free resources to help you study the Bible. Friends, this week we're diving into something that's been eating at me for a while now—how the architects of Christian nationalism have had the audacity to claim Dietrich Bonhoeffer as one of their own. I'm talking about Project 2025 invoking "costly grace" as if Bonhoeffer wasn't writing about them. Here's the thing: when Bonhoeffer penned those famous words in 1937, he wasn't crafting a devotional for suburban book clubs—he was running an illegal seminary under Nazi surveillance, training pastors who were forfeiting their careers, their pensions, and their safety to follow Jesus instead of the Führer. The German Christians of his day fused faith with national identity, blessed political power, and demanded loyalty to a strongman who promised to make their country great again. Sound familiar? The brutal irony is that those who now quote Bonhoeffer are functionally aligned with the very forces he resisted—they're the German Christians quoting the Confessing Church, and that's about as theologically obtuse as Caesar celebrating the cross while forgetting he's the one who put Jesus on it. Costly grace is still available, y'all—it just actually has to cost something. Read the full essay and subscribe for more at my SubStack, Process This You can subscribe to the Audio Essay podcast feed here. Join us at Theology Beer Camp, October 8-10, in Kansas City! UPCOMING ONLINE LENT CLASS: Jesus in Galilee w/ John Dominic Crossan What can we actually know about Jesus of Nazareth? Is it possible that many believers have settled for something less than what God offers? What does it truly mean to move beyond simply believing into actively following? Drawing from Dietrich Bonhoeffer's concept of "cheap grace," this exploration challenges the difference between easy believism and genuine discipleship. When Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee and simply said "follow me," fishermen left their nets immediately—but how many others heard the same invitation and chose to stay where they were? What might be holding you back from stepping out of the boat? Recorded Sunday, October 12th, 2025
