Healthy Churches Have Healthy Members Romans 12 12 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. 3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. 4 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; 8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. 9 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. John 10:3-4 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. John 10:16 And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. Romans 3:10-12 None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one. James, in chapter two, continues to get all up in our business. He continues to warn us about the dangers of showing partiality. He says that God will show His spiritual riches to the poor, but we so often dishonor them by how we treat them. This is a constant refrain from James and all across the Bible. Then he calls us to obey the royal law - love your neighbor. We are legalistic about so many things. But what if we were legalistic about love? What if love was the non-negotiable for us? What would things look like? What if we focused on keeping the royal law? We return today to the Gospel of Mark (12:35-44) and find again that Jesus/Mark have packaged 3 stories together that seem unrelated at first but in fact interpret each other. Jesus first quizzes the people about the Messiah, a descendent of David, somehow also be David's Lord. Then Jesus warns against desiring attention and influence like the religious teachers, many of whom prey on naive widows for income. Then the stories pivot on the character of widows, as the most famous widow of all time drops her two small copper coins in the offering box. She is all in. Jesus is all in. Are we?To investigate this most important of stories further, go here.

In our journey with Jesus through the Gospel of Mark we have recently arrived in Jerusalem after Jesus' triumphal entry on a donkey. (Mark 11:11-25) As Mark's structure passes from Act II to Act III, the joyful pilgrims who'd shouted Hosanna! to Jesus have gone their separate ways and He is now concerned with the Jewish leaders and with how the worship of the entire nation has been structured so as to be as unwelcoming as possible to outsiders. Jesus renders judgment by overturning the tables of commerce, aiming His ire not only at transactional worship but at their disregard of those to whom they were called to witness. To make sure we understand, Mark and Jesus structure this story as the meat of a sandwich, with Jesus' judgment of a fig tree before and after to make clear the meaning at the temple. We are faced with our own ease and convenience in worship, tailored to our preferences and our frame of reference, in ways that can be quite inaccessible to someone from "outside" coming in for a visit. Just as Israel's prime directive was to "be a light to the Gentiles," so we are called to be ambassadors for Christ whether we are out in the world or comfortably snuggled at home.To investigate this most important of stories further, go here.

SWM 147 - How do you know if you're sexually compatible? Check out the blog post here for more details and links. The most common argument I hear for premarital sex is, "You need to know if you're sexually compatible before getting married. Otherwise, you might end up stuck in a sexless, unfulfilling relationship."And it sounds like sound reasoning. We test-drive cars before buying them. We have probation periods for people we hire at work. We sample foods before purchasing them. Shouldn't sex, which is one of the most intimate parts of marriage, be tested beforehand to make sure you're a good match? It's a compelling argument that convinces many people to abandon their principles. It makes you question your morality. It promises both immediate and long-term gratification. However, it's based on a flawed premise.Links in the episode:Becoming More Sexually Engaged (Course)The Art of Edging (eBook)Legalistic vs Loving Approach to Marriage (podcast)National Longitudinal Lesbian Family StudyLet's talk about sex... and ADHDDeterminants of female sexual orgasmsShould Couples Live Together Before Marriage?Cohabitation Experience and Cohabitation's Association With Marital DissolutionThe Pre-engagement Cohabitation Effect: A Replication and Extension of Previous FindingsFollow us on Facebook, Instagram and TwitterIf you'd like to discuss the questions as they come in, consider joining our private forum.Thank you to all our faithful supporters! If you like that there are no ads in our podcast and want to keep it that way, check out our support page for more info. Check out the blog post here for more details and links. In my work as a marriage coach, I often see couples transition from one type of marriage to another. There's no clear line between these states, no set of rules that definitively places someone in one category or the other. Yet, by observing how they handle conflict, express themselves, and interact in small ways, you can often tell which state their marriage is in.A big part of my job as a coach is helping people shift from one type of marriage to another as most issues in marriage are resolved by doing so.Free webinar for Christian wives - Jan 26, 8pm ESTMarriage CoachingFollow us on Facebook, Instagram and TwitterIf you'd like to discuss the questions as they come in, consider joining our private forum.Thank you to all our faithful supporters! If you like that there are no ads in our podcast and want to keep it that way, check out our support page for more info. The most important city for the Roman Empire in Asia Minor was Ephesus. It was a port city with great wealth and influence. And their influence largely came from their worship of the goddess Artemis and their practice of magic arts - black magic. Their entire economy was built on idolatry and magic arts. When the Gospel transformed the Christians in Ephesus, the economy felt it. When the church in Ephesus was first founded, they shook the core of the darkness of Ephesus by their bold proclamations and work in the community.Over time, they became less concerned with bringing light to the darkness and instead grew more concerned with protecting their light. In Revelation 2, 45 years after the church in Ephesus was established, Jesus sees what is happening and calls them out on it. He calls them back to the works they did when they were a young church.

When Jesus addresses each of the seven churches, He follows the same structure:1.) Intro2.) Encouragement3.) Rebuke4.) Repent5.) Consequences6.) RewardSo for each church, we are going to go through this structure, and we're going to unpack what Jesus says. So what's Ephesus' deal? What does "the one who holds the seven stars in His right hand, and walks among the seven golden lampstands" have to say to this church? And most importantly, where has the love gone??We're glad you're here with us! Let's get into it :)
If anything, the religious rulers of Jesus' day were Antinomians, not Legalists. They did not “stretch” the Law of God, they “shrunk” it.

Has legalistic leadership adversely affected you? Welcome to the Daily Devo. I am Vince Miller. This week, we are in 1 Samuel 14. I've titled this chapter "A Contrast Of Leadership Between Jonathan and Saul." In the first part of Chapter 14, we witness Jonathan, who acted in faith, and God did some incredible things through him. In the second part of Chapter 14, Saul engages in and flubs up a really great thing that God had been doing. Saul cuts off the priest, who is in the middle of his duties because he sees the chaos in the enemy camp. So they head off in hot pursuit. But before they go, Saul makes the people swear an oath not to eat until his enemy is defeated. We saw last time this was an unnecessary oath promoted from self-interest, and his son Jonathan knows it. Now the people are weak, and here is what happens in 31-35: They struck down the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon. And the people were very faint. The people pounced on the spoil and took sheep and oxen and calves and slaughtered them on the ground. And the people ate them with the blood. Then they told Saul, “Behold, the people are sinning against the Lord by eating with the blood.” And he said, “You have dealt treacherously; roll a great stone to me here.” And Saul said, “Disperse yourselves among the people and say to them, ‘Let every man bring his ox or his sheep and slaughter them here and eat, and do not sin against the Lord by eating with the blood.'” So every one of the people brought his ox with him that night and they slaughtered them there. And Saul built an altar to the Lord; it was the first altar that he built to the Lord. — 1 Samuel 14:31-35 Let me say here that it sounds like they were eating raw flesh, like cannibals. But they are not. They simply had not allowed all the blood to drain from the animal before they cooked it. They were starving, so it led them to rush and sin. We have all encountered a moment like this. We have all been so hungry or waited so long to eat that when we are sat before a buffet, we cannot stop eating. Plenty of times, I have been so hungry that I have eaten an entire family-size bag of chips. There have been times I have waited so long for a meal that when food is finally in front of me, I eat too fast and beyond my capacity, to the point I cannot move. When you sit excessive amounts of food before hungry and exhausted men, we should expect them to rush and overeat. That's what happened here. The people were tired and hungry. They now had excessive food and rushed into an act of sin. But Saul led them into this unnecessary sin and blamed them for it. This is terrible leadership. Saul ruined a great story and a great moment. Had he not mandated this vow, think about how awesome this story would have ended. Jonathan and his armor-bearer sneak away. They take steps of courageous faith. They seek God. They climb a cliff into battle. Two men slaughter twenty men. Then, the Hebrew turncoats in the Philistine ranks turn on the garrison. Then, outside tribes join in from every direction. Saul sees the commotion and hustles over. Even in the moment of need, God provides some natural provision in the form of honey for a last push in battle. And finally, there is a complete defeat and plunder. Six hundred men defeat 36,000 men and send them running, but the whole story is ruined by an oppressive and selfish vow that should have never been issued, and then Saul blames his men for rushing to eat. Legalistic leaders forbid freedoms that God grants. They forbid freedom to control situations, people, and outcomes. However, sometimes, these restrictions backfire, tempting people to break with legalism and do things God forbids. This is exactly what Saul did here. His vow led the people into sin. Even worse, Saul doesn't take ownership of the policy that led his people into sin. He blames them. Saul played god, thus ruining a great moment where God did something great. One tension in leadership is knowing how to best lead a person or people to victory. Some only need to know the goal, others need tangible steps, and still others need protective boundaries. It is different for everyone. But as leaders, we have to make sure our attitude and heart are in the right place as we make these decisions. Saul instituted his vow out of selfish intent. He wasn't concerned about God or his victory. He was only worried about himself, his image, and his victory over "his enemy" (1 Samuel 14:24). If you lead one or many, pay attention to your heart today. There may be one who is challenging for you to lead. Be careful how you speak and lead them. Let the Spirit have control, and stop being purposely oppressive or passively aggressive. If you do, your legalistic plan might backfire and draw unneeded attention to your selfishness and sin. #LeadershipLessons, #FaithOverLegalism, #AvoidLegalism Ask This: In what areas of your life or leadership have you found yourself imposing unnecessary restrictions or rules? How can you lead with more grace and trust in God's guidance instead? Reflect on a time when legalistic attitudes caused more harm than good. How can you ensure your leadership fosters freedom in Christ rather than restrictive control? Do This: Watch your legalistic tendencies in leadership. Pray This: Lord, help me to lead with humility and grace, avoiding the pitfalls of legalism that stem from selfish motives. Guide my heart to prioritize Your will over my own, trusting You in every decision I make. Amen. Play This: Yet Not I But Through Christ In Me.

About the Guest(s): Mike Abendroth is the seasoned pastor of Bethlehem Bible Church in West Boytston, Massachusetts, where he has served since 1997. He brings a wealth of pastoral experience and theological insight to his ministry. Mike is also the voice behind No Compromise Radio, a platform dedicated to discussing theological truths and contemporary church issues, which can be found at nocompromiseradio.com or on popular podcast-catching apps. Episode Summary: In the latest episode of Renewal Cast, listeners are treated to a thought-provoking conversation with Mike Abendroth, who brings nuanced discussions on antinomianism and neonomianism to the table. The episode promises more than theological jargon; it delves into concepts critical to understanding gospel proclamation and the Christian life. The conversation begins by examining the historical and theological underpinnings of neonomianism and antinomianism—terms that discuss adherence to and the addition of laws in Christian doctrine, respectively. Abendroth eloquently navigates through the implications of these ideologies on salvation and Christian living, striking a balance that eschews legalism and licentiousness. The discussion seamlessly incorporates practical pastoral advice, affirming the priority of faith in Christ alone for salvation, while clarifying the roles of repentance and obedience as fruits of genuine faith. Key Takeaways:Neonomianism involves adding prerequisites to the gospel, suggesting that actions such as forsaking sin are required to come to Christ, which complicates the free offer of the gospel.Antinomianism challenges how Christians should live after salvation, questioning if obedience to God's law is necessary since they are not justified by it.True repentance and faith are closely linked, almost simultaneous in experience, yet distinct in order, with faith logically preceding repentance.Assurance of salvation should primarily rest on the person and work of Christ, not on the level of one's sanctification or good works.Legalistic preaching can obscure the generous grace of God, substituting the joy of the gospel with a burden of performance.Notable Quotes:"Jesus justifies the ungodly; His grace preceeds repentance and faith.""You're saved by faith alone, but that faith's not alone." (Paraphrased from Martin Luther)"Christians do sin…we don't have to pray enough or evangelize enough to be acceptable in God's eyes…Jesus did all that enough and we can just rest in him."Resources:Bethlehem Bible Church: Bethlehem Bible Church WebsiteNo Compromise Radio: No Compromise Radio WebsiteLet this episode be not just an academic venture but a heartwarming reminder of the profound grace that defines the Christian life. Read the blog here: http://dougapple.blogspot.com/ +++++++ I’m Doug Apple...and my heart is on fire. (Luke 24:32) “The bathtub has arrived!” A huge man waddles in carrying a heavy bathtub. It’s a new house. The walls are up. The smell of sawdust is in the air. And it’s time to install the bathtub. The man sets it down in the only place it can go, touching the walls on three sides. Then he looks down the drain and says, “Uh oh.” Uh oh. That is something you never want to hear. You don’t want to hear it from your dentist. You don’t want to hear it from your potty-training toddler. And you sure don’t want to hear it from your plumber. What happened was, he set the bathtub down, looked down the drain hole, and what did he see? He should have seen nothing but a black hole, but instead he saw the floor. No hole. No drain. What he didn’t know was that a few weeks earlier, when his assistant was installing the tub drain pipe, he didn’t follow the blueprint. He installed the drain where he THOUGHT it should go. He followed his gut, not the blueprint. That’s a disaster, right? But we do that daily with the blueprint of life. What is the blueprint of life? Jesus talks about the blueprint of life at the end of the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapter seven. He actually gives us a construction analogy. He said, “Whoever hears these sayings of mine and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who builds his house…” There’s your construction analogy. He compares building our life to building a house. And he compares His teachings to the house’s blueprint. A blueprint tells you how to build a house, and God’s word tells you how to build your life. A blueprint is drawn up by an architect. The architect is the designer. In life we have an architect with a capital A. It’s the Lord God Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. And we have a blueprint with a capital B. It’s the Word of God, the Scriptures, the Bible. But we often don’t treat the Bible like a blueprint. We treat it like an optional book of wisdom that we don’t really have to pay all that much attention to. And we pay a price for it. To the degree that we follow God’s blueprint is the degree to which we build our life well. And to the degree that we don’t follow God’s blueprint is the degree to which we build our life poorly. A good architect thinks of all the details ahead of time. He fits everything together perfectly, but the builder has to follow the blueprint or things WON’T fit together perfectly. In fact, if the builder messes up just a few things, that building project will become a royal disaster very quickly. The same is true for our life. If we follow God’s Word fairly well, but we decide that we know better in just a few things, it’s not going to work. Some people say, “Oh, I don’t want to be all LEGALISTIC.” But imagine this. You’re spending a half a million dollars to build your new dream home, and your architect has cooked up a beautiful blueprint. Do you want the builder to be legalistic about following your blueprint? Of course you do! This is your home and you want it done right. And when it comes to our life, don’t we want to build well? Don’t we want a good life that is solid and holds up under the pressure of the elements? Jesus told us how to do that. “Whoever hears these sayings of mine and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.” We can build our life well if we build according to the Blueprint with a capital B, drawn up by the Architect with a capital A. And this is what I call The Construction Principles of the Carpenter. May God bless you today. I’m Doug Apple.

What is one of the greatest threats to our fulfilment of love, romance, and sex? Single – Married – Complicated Desire: Love – Romance Sex Fulfilment: Love – Romance – Sex Choosing the path of self-gratification sabotages our hopes for fulfilment. Failure is NOT final! God's grace & love has the power to redeem every area of our lives. What path leads to fulfilment without damaging our dreams? Don't throw the baby out with bathwater In our passion to rid ourselves of something unwanted and harmful, don't accidently get rid of something valuable and important to ourselves. God's path to healthy fulfilment in love, romance, and sex is purity. Purity distorted: Culture – Boring & No Fun Church – Legalistic & Shameful Purity is not just do's and don'ts It's a heart posture of honor and selflessness “Don't you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? For it doesn't go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.” - Mark 7:18-23 “For it is from within, out of A PERSON'S HEART, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person.” - Mark 7:18-23 “And now I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” - John 13:34 Using something made to be selfless in a selfish way just becomes exploitation. 1. Surrender to God's version of good, not our own 2. See all people as image-bearers not objects of wants 3. Serve one another without weaponizing legitimate needs Trusting God's goodness and boundaries through obedience protects us from the trap of self-gratification that harms fulfilment
But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.” So, brothers, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman. — Galatians 4:30-31 CALL OUT: Today's call-out goes to Jay Turner from Seabrook, SC, and his group, who is using our study Attributes for Men on RightNow Media. Thank you so much. Are you hearing voices that are competing with the truth? Paul's words in this text pierce through the legalistic voices we all hear. He urged us to cast off the shackles of slavery that entangle our souls. Just as Sarah demanded the expulsion of Hagar and Ishmael, so too are we called to purge our lives of legalism and legalistic voices that come from anywhere or anyone who would speak anything but the truth. As you travel your spiritual journey, you will encounter people and voices that seek to ensnare you. Certain Jewish teachers in Galatia did. They sought to impose circumcision and obedience to the law as requirements for salvation, which was a denial of the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice on the Cross. Some believers silently accepted this, assuming it was the truth. But Paul's voice rose louder. He spoke back to these people and their voices, proclaiming that legalism has no place in the life of a believer. Today, instead of passively accepting everything you hear, it may be time to test these people and their voices. When they do not align with Scriptural truth, speak back to them. Preach the truth to them and know that sometimes just saying it is enough to reject the voices and people who entangle us all. God, give the believer listening today the strength to reject and speak back to any untruth that is stirring in their mind or resting on their soul. Liberate them from legalism. In Jesus's name, amen. #FreedomInChrist #RejectLegalism #VoiceOfTruth #CastOutShackles #EmbraceGospelFreedom ASK THIS: How can you discern between voices that align with Scriptural truth and those that promote legalism or falsehood? In what areas of your life do you feel the pull of legalistic pressures or voices? How can you actively cast out these influences and embrace the freedom found in Christ? DO THIS: Speak back to the voice of untruth. PRAY THIS: Lord, grant me discernment to recognize and reject the voices of legalism that seek to entangle my soul. Empower me to boldly embrace the freedom found in Your truth. Help me to speak out against falsehood and stand firm in the liberty secured for me by Christ's sacrifice on the cross. Amen. PLAY THIS: Truth I'm Standing On.

Colton Beach is a Christ-follower who's also a gay New Yorker who grew up secretly struggling with same sex attraction' in the Independent Fundamental Baptist church. He grew up ignoring his sexual identity for the sake of his Christian identity which allowed sexual sin to fester in darkness until it could no longer be ignored. He is passionate about calling the church to be honest about the reality and extent of our brokenness to invite those around us to do the same. This episode is special. When we heard that widely-beloved writer John Green was rallying his online community around a fight over drug prices — and apparently making a difference — we were pumped. And this story took us in so many different directions: Literally around the world, and then straight back home. The drug in question is bedaquiline, made by Johnson & Johnson. It treats drug-resistant tuberculosis, and its price has been a huge obstacle to getting it to places it's needed most — primarily places far away from the U.S.But the reason this TB drug costs so much overseas is also one of the main reasons that important drugs here are so expensive — drugs like insulin, Humira and… well, just about everything: Legalistic patent games that pharma companies have mastered. So, in addition to John Green — and yes, we talked with John Green — we also talked with one of the world's leading experts on drug-patent games, Tahir Amin. Also, John Green is a great storyteller. So hearing him tell the story of how he became obsessed with tuberculosis is bittersweet. And in order to make sense of any of this, we had to dig into the story of how John Green and his brother Hank became (and remain) YouTube superstars. For more than 16 years, they've been building a community of “nerdfighters” — nerds fighting to make the world a better place. It's a profoundly sweet and fun story, and everything we're trying to do here owes them a debt. Oh, finally: This is, as you're probably guessing by now, an epic story. It's gonna take two full episodes of An Arm and a Leg to tell it all. So, we hope you enjoy part one. There's more coming in a few weeks. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Some critics accuse Apostolic Pentecostals of being "legalistic" because of our insistence on water baptism in Jesus' name and our pursuit of personal holiness. Is this accusation warranted? UPCI General Superintendent Dr. David K. Bernard responds to this charge with a defense of Apostolic Pentecostal teachings on both salvation and holiness. For further study, see Dr. Bernard's book Practical Holiness: A Second Look, available at PentecostalPublishing.com.If you enjoy this podcast, leave a five-star rating and a review on iTunes or your preferred podcast platform. Mark's Gospel is powerfully and precisely written. It packs a ton of information into shorter spaces than the other Gospels. (A great Gospel for ADHD sufferers!). Mark also uses the power of COMPARISON to make his points super strong. In Mark 2, he compares the Pharisees with Jesus by showing the questions they asked Him. We will look at those today, as well as the one question Jesus asked them to start chapter 3.It is often said of the church, that there are Pharisees and we are sometimes Legalistic, too Judgmental, or Traditionalists to a fault. There may be truth to that at times, but if we can't be specific on what that looks like, we can't fix it. Some of us may just not have the heart to fix it... you know... like the Pharisees. But for those of us who do want to be more like Jesus and less like the Pharisees, we need some guidance. Today's episode may be a good place to start. Be prayer and give it a listen. - Why were the Pharisees so doubtful and unkind toward Jesus?- How was His heart for people nearly nothing like their heart?- Why was Jesus simple teaching of salvation in Him such a threat to them?- Should mercy triumph over judgment and what does that look like?- How can you be more like Jesus and less like the Pharisees?
