Seja talks to her guest Luke Steele (Empire of the Sun, the Sleepy Jackson, DREAMS, H3000) about growing up in a blues club with his dad and learning some valuable lessons. Luke tells Seja about production ideas that never made it into a show, his experimentations with illusions and the mistakes he made as a young person. Seja shares her first memories of the Sleepy Jackson and they chat about Luke's friendship and creative collaboration with Daniel Johns, working with Beyonce and Jay-z and what it means to think about music as a business. Luke's strange show experience was illustrated by Liam Barling (@leleleroy). You can see all podcast illustrations on instagram @hearsejpodcat or on the HearSej Facebook page
Luke Steele knows how to create magic. From his accomplished work in the early 2000's with The Sleepy Jackson to the grandiosity of Empire Of The Sun and the bold musical exploration and experimentation of his project Dreams with Daniel Johns from Silverchair, Luke has written some absolute first class tunes that contain that inexplicable quality which transcends language and trend and resonates with people of all ages. His new project H3000 is a collaboration with producer Jarrad Rogers and is a meritorious continuation of Luke's musical journey. We talk about Luke's new bushman beard and his bear-proofing skills, waiting for the right musical calling, ignoring the fear of people's opinions, meeting Rocky and a bunch more. Luke Steele was born into music – growing up in Perth his childhood involved watching his guitarist dad play in pubs and clubs and, when he was old enough, joining him onstage at weekly blues jam nights. By 19 he'd formed indie band The Sleepy Jackson, with whom he toured the world and received widespread critical acclaim. His big break, though, came with Empire Of The Sun, the outfit he formed in the mid-2000s with Nick Littlemore from electronic outfit PNAU, and whose song "Walking On A Dream" became an international hit. Now he's launched his latest project, H3000, with fellow producer/songwriter Jarrad Rogers. We talk about all of these different projects in this interview, as well as Luke's upbringing in Perth, the importance of his faith and much more.
