You could fill an entire bookshelf with guides on babies and toddlers, or the best strategies for dealing with teenagers. But for Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg, one of the most critical stages for child development is the pre-adolescent phase, when kids really begin to push their parents away and first ask the biggest questions of their lives: Who am I? Am I normal? Where do I fit in? On this episode of Paternal, Dr. Ginsburg returns to the show for the first in a series of special episodes devoted to the issues affecting our kids. He dives deep into the idea of brain puberty and what's happening in the minds of kids in this pre-adolescent phase, why they're trying harder than ever to break free from their parents, how screen habits figure into their development, and why you should leave your own painful memories of middle school out of the conversation with your kids. Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg is a pediatrician specializing in Adolescent Medicine at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He is also the author of Lighthouse Parenting: Raising Your Child With Loving Guidance for a Lifelong Bond.

Authoritarian parents. Permissive parents. Disengaged parents. Lighthouse parents. How would you describe the parents you had as a kid and, more importantly, what type are you now that you're a parent? The answer could speak volumes about how you interact with your kids when it comes to the rules of the house, how to build resilience, and how much you value expressing emotions. And it will likely determine just how strong the bond is between you and your kids for the rest of their lives. On this episode of Paternal, Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg -  a pediatrician specializing in Adolescent Medicine at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine - breaks down the different styles of parenting and which one consistently yields the best results for children. He also discusses a pair of challenges often echoed by fathers on Paternal - how to honor your kids' emotions instead of shutting them down, and why it's crucial to show yourself some grace in front of your kids.  Dr. Ginsburg is the author of three books on parenting including Lighthouse Parenting, available wherever you buy books beginning March 18.

Today, I want to talk about a research finding that might make your kids angry, but it might also help your kids perform better in school. A study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine found that a student's cognitive performance may be improved if they walk to school, rather than be driven to school in a car or on the bus. It seems that God has wired our bodies in such a way that teenagers who engage in physical activity early in the morning wind up stimulating their brains in ways that contribute to increased cognitive performance during the school day. And because adolescent females are typically less active than their male peers, that early morning walk is especially helpful to our girls. While researchers do say that there are actually a multiplicity of factors that could be at work here, one thing is sure: this research reminds us that God made us as integrated beings. To be balanced, our kids need to get enough exercise. Make sure your kids are active and not dormant.

She is a trailblazing healthcare provider with a significant following, specializing in bridging the gap between conventional medicine and functional health. Dr. Hieshetter is dedicated to inspiring and informing her audience about the body's intrinsic potential for healing and self-regulation. Episode Summary: In this compelling episode of Functional Health Radio, Dr. Kristin Hieshetter delves into the worrying trends regarding American life expectancy and the rising rates of chronic diseases among children. She highlights the stark drop in life expectancy over the past few years and explores the myriad of factors contributing to this phenomenon, including lifestyle choices and the medical system's shortcomings. Utilizing data from reputable sources such as the CDC and the Journal of Scientific Reports, Dr. Hieshetter builds an illuminating narrative around the importance of functional health and the untapped potential of the human body. Dr. Hieshetter turns a critical eye towards modern children's screen time and its detrimental impact on cognitive and emotional development. Through studies from Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine and the Journal of American Medical Association, she showcases the significant decrease in IQ and attention span linked to excessive screen usage. Highlighting research that ties early screen time to issues like aggressive behavior, obesity, and psychiatric disorders, Dr. Hieshetter makes a compelling case for reducing children's digital exposure. She passionately advocates for turning off screens, encouraging outdoor play, and fostering imaginative and physical activities to improve lifelong health and cognitive function. Key Takeaways: Decreasing Life Expectancy: Analysis of recent CDC reports showing a decline in life expectancy for both men and women in the United States. Impact of Screen Time on Children: Studies demonstrating significant drops in cognitive abilities, attention span, and IQ tied to excessive screen time among children. Negative Behavioral Effects: Children with high TV and digital media consumption exhibit more aggression, obesity, and sleep disorders. Differentiating Digital Activities: Constructive use of technology for educational purposes can mitigate some negative impacts compared to passive consumption like video games and social media. Encouragement for Physical Activity: Emphasizing the role of physical movement in brain development and overall health, advocating for more outdoor play and dynamic activities for kids. Notable Quotes: "The life expectancy in the United States is falling, and children are being diagnosed with chronic diseases at unprecedented rates." "Zero to three-year-olds watched an average of 2.2 hours of television a day, dramatically lowering their reading recognition and comprehension scores." "59% of children under age two in America right now watch at least 1.5 hours of TV a day." "Having a TV in a kid's room is associated with reduced test scores, lowered cognition, and lower IQ." "We need to get these kids out. We need to get them moving. The more we move, the bigger the brain." Originally designed to treat diabetes, GLP-1 analogs are now prescribed as weight loss medications. But is this a good idea and should parents allow their kids to try this if they want to lose weight? Can these drugs increase the rates of eating disorders among young people? Diet pills have been around for decades and historically have been pulled from the market after noting serious side effects. So, what do patients — and parents — need to know about weight loss medications? Dr. Anna B. Tanner, Vice President of Child and Adolescent Medicine for Accanto Health, shares her findings on whether these medications are safe and whether they can lead to eating disorders. Now that cannabis is legal for adults to use in Minnesota, it's time to talk to your kids about it. In coming months, more young people will be around adults who smoke weed. They'll likely see adults sip seltzers or eat gummies infused with THC — the active ingredient in marijuana. However you feel about adult marijuana use, there's evidence that cannabis affects developing brains differently than adult brains. It's linked to the risk of adolescent depression and suicide. And, in states that have legalized marijuana, young people have increased access to high potency products that can make them ill.  MPR News host Angela Davis talks with a pediatrician and an adolescent addiction psychiatrist about having “the cannabis talk” with the young people in our lives.  Guests:  Dr. Kathleen “Katy” Miller is a pediatrician and medical director of Adolescent Medicine at Children's Minnesota. Dr. Sara Polley is a pediatric and adult addiction psychiatrist and director of addiction psychiatry at Ellie Mental Health in Golden Valley, Minn.  Subscribe to the MPR News with Angela Davis podcast on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify or RSS.  Use the audio player above to listen to the full conversation.
