In episode 119, I catch up with Alexis Krauss and Derek Miller, the noise pop duo better known as Sleigh Bells. I have been a massive Sleigh Bells fan since their first few singles back in 2009 — brash, genre-defying bangers like “Crown on the Ground” and “Infinity Guitars” that sounded unlike anything else, combining elements of pop, metal, hardcore, hip-hop and punk. They've continued to blow my mind with the leaps they've made since then. The three of us are also old friends at this point, and though we've done shorter interviews in the past, it was great to finally get to ask them some of the classic LSQ podcast questions about all the shit they were into as kids. In this episode, Alexis talks about what she learned from her experience in a teen pop band, revelations she had at the punk and hardcore shows she frequented during her New Jersey youth, and learning to integrate the diverse parts of her musical voice. Derek describes falling in love with the soundtrack to La Bamba as a kid growing up in Florida, and then discovering 80s pop greats like Janet Jackson and Cyndi Lauper before venturing into alternative and hard rock (Nirvana, Silverchair) and then having his mind blown by ground-breaking artists such as Radiohead and Björk, and then eventually joining metal core band Poison The Well in his later teens. They also share the story of how they came together to form Sleigh Bells, and how their current approach builds on the foundational principles they established for the band more than fifteen years ago.Sleigh Bells' new sixth studio album, Bunky Becky Birthday Boy, comes out this week and it's stellar. By the time Silverchair had hit the stage gunge was dead - or so they thought. Kurt had passed a year earlier and with it we started to see a shift in musical styles, except for the small town of Newcastle, who were going to see a high school band help shape the Australian music scene for years to come. On this episode of Retro Reviews we take a look at Frogstomp...

On this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we're jumping in our musical memory machine and going back 30 years to 1995. Rock and roll still ruled the charts and alternative music was still a thing. We got great albums from Alice in Chains, No Doubt, Mad Season, Oasis, Ozzy, and White Zombie. SIlverchair, the Foo Fighters, the Deftones, Jewel, Radiohead, Alanis Morissette, and Garbage all released their debut albums. TLC warned us against chasing Waterfalls. Coolio was living in a gangsta's paradise, and groups also released a handful of songs that we still hear today: Hey Man Nice Shot, Peaches, and those songs by Spacehog, Better Than Ezra, Elastica. Several members of the Wu Tang Clan released solo albums. R&B kinda sucked with a few exceptions. And there was weird stuff like the Macarena, Scatman John, and Cotton Eye Joe were on the radio. We're going cover as much of it as we can in this throwback episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, so let's hit it. Episode Playlist & Other Stuff Check out our episode playlist here. Here at Dig Me Out we spent the last ten years starting each new season by looking back at the albums from each year that stood the test of time, disappeared without a trace, and everything in between. We kicked off with a roundtable in 2015 and revisited the albums of 1995, so it made sense to start a new series of roundtables in 1995 as well. This time we're checking out the singles of each year, looking at the year-end Modern Rock/Alternative and Hot 100 charts in the US, as well as charts from Canada, the UK and Australia for comparison. Like with all roundtables, we enlisted the help of some special guests to revisit this interesting transitional year that saw the rise of the second generation of grunge bands like Bush and Silverchair, the continued success of 1994's pop-punk breakthroughs by Green Day and The Offspring, and the juggernaut that was Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette. But that doesn't tell the entire tale, so former A&R executive and audio tech writer James Barber and music writer Kevin Alexander join us to talk about all the hits, the near misses, and the weirdness that was 1995. Lastly, our third guest, S.W. Lauden aka Steve Coulter was unable to attend due to the tragic loss of his and his family's home in the Eaton, CA. fires. If you are able, please consider donating to the Go Fund Me set-up by Steve's friends. Songs In This Episode Intro - You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette (Jagged Little Pill) 12:15 - Possum Kingdom by Toadies (Marvel's Thunderbolts 2025 trailer) 24:48 - A Girl Like You by Edwyn Collins (Empire Records soundtrack) 33:18 - Bright Yellow Gun by Throwing Muses (University) 53:24 - No More I Love You's by Annie Lennox (Medusa) 1:00:23 - Common People by Pulp (Different Class) Outro - Alright by Supergrass (I Should Coco) Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Interview by Angela CroudaceBrisbane-based alternative rock trio Nonberk have made waves in the local scene since their formation in 2019. Led by frontman Zaac Thompson, the band's sound channels heavy 90s grunge influences like Soundgarden, Silverchair, and Alice In Chains. Their powerful riffs and raw lyrics have earned them a dedicated following, with each release bringing something fresh to the table. In a candid interview, Zaac shared insights into Nonberk's journey, creative process, and new single, Shallow, which captures their evolving sound. The band's origin story goes back to Zaac's university days, where he met drummer Sam Monk. Their shared love for music soon brought bass player Kevin Boga into the fold, who had been active in Brisbane's alternative rock scene. Despite line-up changes and the challenges posed by the pandemic, Nonberk found their groove during lockdowns, using the time to focus on writing and refining their music.Regarding the band's name, Zaac admits that coming up with something unique was a challenge. "I wanted something original—something you'd never forget," he says. Nonberk is a made-up word, symbolising the band's unconventional approach to music. For Zaac, it represents a "non stupid person" in a playful, self-deprecating way, reflecting their experimental nature and desire to push musical boundaries. The band's latest album, Elements, marks a significant shift in their sound. After a line-up change, Zaac swapped from bass to guitar, influencing the new tracks' dynamics. The album's theme draws inspiration from nature, with songs written in various outdoor settings, from beaches to forests. Shallow, the first single from the album, exemplifies this connection to nature. Zaac explains that the song's flowing verses reflect the serenity of the beach, while the deeper lyrical themes explore existential questions about loss and the human experience.Beyond his work with Nonberk, Zaac's musical influences span across genres. From the hard-hitting riffs of Black Sabbath to the quirky humour of Tenacious D, he draws inspiration from a wide range of artists. "I try to pull influences from all kinds of music," he says, mentioning his appreciation for jazz and classical music alongside rock and metal.Nonberk's music is marked by its emotional depth and sonic texture, with collaborations like the one with cellist Nicholas Tam on their album adding further richness to their sound. With an album launch on the horizon and plans for a 5th-anniversary edition of their debut album, Nonberk is poised for an exciting year ahead. Zaac says, "It's all about challenging ourselves and pushing our sound to new places." Keep an eye on them—Nonberk's journey is only just beginning.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Join us as we rank the under-appricated (everywhere except Australia) discography of the teenage grunge-rockers who progressed into an overall fantastic band and then called it quits.
We were not the only ones who loved Late Night With the Devil. It has set box office records for all independent film and has been critically praised. We talk about what its immediate future holds. Plus, David Lynch made his big announcement and we called it. (Spoiler alert: it's not the second GTA VI trailer.)You can pinpoint the exact moment What Keeps You Alive peaks. Everything up to the moment is tension filled and exciting. The film is beautifully shot and presents an interesting set of characters. It is familiar, but still does its own thing. Regrettably, it falls right off a cliff soon after.Things go on for too long, the writing gives away way too much, and the ending is unsatisfying. It is a classic case of going out with a whimper instead of a bang. And it ruins all the good will that had been built up over the course of the previous hour plus. Tack on the strange addition of 1990s Australian rock band Silverchair, and you have a head scratching finale. We were really looking forward to The Curse II: The Bite. It is B-horror, stars scream queen Jill Schoelen, and is part of a franchise. The fact that it was filmed and takes place in Las Cruces only added to our anticipation. Little did we know the movie would also have Jaime Farr of MAS*H fame in one of the most ridiculously awesome subplots ever, some unironically awesome special effects, and a look at late 80s trucker culture. In this BFE (beer-free episode), Barry, Abigail, and special guest Ian Rees (previously interviewed on Bonus: Friendship Induced Pod) discuss Ian's Virtual Jukebox submission, Diorama by Silverchair. Barry continually references Silverchair's debut album Frogstomp (not also known as Frogstamp). Abigail and Barry both compared the oeuvre of this album to that of Astoria by Marianas Trench, discussed on Cascadia (Marianas Trench and Cascade Brewing), and Electro-Shock Blues by Eels, discussed on Owlectro-Shock Brews [Eels and Dangerous Minds Brewing Co.). Silverchair worked with composer Van Dyke Parks on this album. In a twist we could not have predicted, we discovered some relevant information about Parks after recording that did not come up in our conversation. Per Wikipedia, Parks wrote “‘City of Lights,' ‘It's a “B” Movie,' ‘Cutting Edge,' and ‘Worthless,' all of which were used in the film The Brave Little Toaster, directed by Jerry Rees.[citation needed].” Well, we'll be the confirmatory citation - Jerry Rees is Ian's dad! However, during the episode, we did discuss Parks' work with The Beach Boys on their unfinished album Smile and his musically eclectic album Song Cycle. Did you catch Barry's weekly Coriolis force joke? Barry compared the guitar sound in Angie by The Rolling Stones to that in World Upon Your Shoulders. Abigail pointed out that had this not been a BFE, Green Bench would have been the perfect brewery to pair with Silverchair. We discussed the trend of including a hidden track after a long silence on a CD (in reference to “Outro,” the hidden track after After All These Years). We referenced I Have Seen the Rain (feat. James T. Moore) by P!nk, Her Majesty by The Beatles, and Mercy, Sweet Moan by The Black Crowes as comparative examples. Reddit has also discussed this issue at length. Wikipedia maintains a list of albums containing a hidden track. After minimal research, we believe the mysterious album Ian referenced with multiple silent tracks was Sleepify by Vulfpeck. We once again plugged Matty C's multimedia project What Am I Making. We closed by playing Ian's new single, Say Goodbye. Watch the trippy music video! Say Goodbye is available for purchase on iTunes and Amazon. Ian has an abundance of music available on Spotify and YouTube. We especially recommend Panic Induced Love (the album we reviewed on Bonus: Friendship Induced Pod), his Building A Song Series, and his Bo Burnham-inspired video “Why Do I Eat So Much Cheese?”. Up next… A Fever You Can't Sweat Out by Panic! At the Disco Ian also randomly selected our next Jukebox episode, Professional Rapper by Lil Dicky, submitted by Dinos Korominas. This episode is scheduled to drop on July 12, 2024. Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition. Barry and Abigail discuss Twilight Time by Bennie Wallace and sample Time Stands Still, Twinger, Mangoes At Work, and They Call Me Baltastic from Hiatus Brewing Company in Ocala, Florida. Barry has a personal connection to Bennie Wallace through his friend “Uncle” Steve Moore, whose Oscar-nominated animated short “Redux Riding Hood” features a score written by Bennie. Watch "Redux Riding Hood" or read Uncle Steve's blog post about its production! Many thanks to Lucas Frank, owner and brewer of Hiatus Brewing Company, for sitting down with us to talk about the history and the branding of the brewery! Barry shared his other Los Angeles jazz experiences at Chadney's, across the street from the NBC Studios. One memorable performance was by trombone player Matt Finders, who was part of Tonight Show with Jay Leno Band led by Kevin Eubanks. Check out Barry's playlist of the songs that were covered by Bennie Wallace on this album! Abigail could not help but hear Silver Bells in The Tennessee Waltz. Abigail and Barry compared Willie Mae to Linus and Lucy by Vince Guaraldi Trio, from the soundtrack to “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” Up next… Diorama by Silverchair, submitted to our Virtual Jukebox by Ian Rees Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. After hair metal all but destroyed heavy metal in the late 80's and early 90's, things were a bit grim. Grim in the same sort of way that Birmingham, England was grim in the late 60's. Perhaps one of the silver linings to emerge out of the make-up and hairspray laden aftermath of glam was the down to earth, retro metal infused sounds emerging out of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, specifically, the “Seattle scene” which brought us an entirely new genre of metal (aka “grunge”) that served as a desperately needed palette cleanser and helped to breathe new life into the dystopian landscape which had become the world of metal. Enter Seattle, Washington's SOUNDGARDEN, a staple of the Seattle “grunge” scene of the early 1990's that combined the best elements of classic Zeppelin and Sabbath built on a foundation of unpredictable & untraditional riffs chock full of heavy alternate tunings, ugly chords, and screaming vocals, conjuring a heavy 70's infused sound which is both simultaneously retro and brutally modern. It's time to saddle up your “goat camel” and call the “dingo hunter” to learn more about the rich culture of “The Belgish” that goes far beyond “waffles and white beers”. Find out what used to put the “high” in high school, get ready for some “karaoke reflections” (including the best Creed impression ever) and JOIN US as we go INSIDE THE METAL with Seattle's alternative metal mavericks, SOUNDGARDEN Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, Google Podcasts or wherever you get your Podcasts. The LIFERS Podcast is back on stage! We started 2024 off right/wrong with a special LIVE New Year's hangover party at the Gman Tavern in Chicago (it was Kelly Wey's idea). Was it a success? Well… mostly. After talking about Gabe's horrific performance as Jambi from Pee Wee's Playhouse (and witnessing Gabe's horriFIED performance as Richard Roma from David Mamet's “Glengarry Glen Ross) — we welcomed our first guest of ‘24: Deanna Belos of Sincere Engineer! Who then proceeded to win over the audience with her winning combination of heartfelt bashfulness and good humor — that is until she let it slip that she hated dogs(?!?). It got ugly after that. PLUS!!!: Ben's wearing Scrooge's pajamas, Kelly's Bloody Mary program, Colin Smith doesn't want to be here, U2, Silverchair, “One Shot With Scott”, Deanna plays some tunes, Brendan Kelly stops by for a few rounds of “Cards Against Humanity”, and a good time was had by all (except for the dog thing).
For the last episode of season one, Charles interviews Pauline, an educational leader, and professional learning designer. The narrative unfolds as Pauline recounts her 12-year-old-self attending a Dave Matthews Band concert in 1994, courtesy of tickets acquired through a connection to the tour manager. The excitement of the concert is heightened when, unexpectedly, they discover backstage passes in the envelope with their tickets. Pauline vividly describes the surreal experience of meeting Dave Matthews backstage, emphasizing his kindness and the impact it had on her as a young fan.The conversation then shifts to Pauline's journey through her music preferences, from the rock scene of middle school to the boy band era in high school, featuring her appreciation for BBMak. The podcast highlights Pauline's recent experience attending a BBMak concert in 2023, where she joyfully embraced the nostalgia of cheesy boy band music surrounded by fans of the same era. The show turns toward Pauline's role as a concert mom when she talks about taking her family to see Ed Sheeran. The discussion touches on concert logistics, including the importance of selecting suitable seating for younger attendees and the significance of acquiring concert shirts as mementos. Pauline shares her son's enthusiasm for Ed Sheeran, recounting the family's exciting experience at the concert, breaking attendance records and creating lasting memories. Charles concludes the episode by discussing future concert plans and how the podcast has reignited his and Pauline's passion for live music. The episode leaves listeners with a sense of the diverse and enriching experiences that concerts offer, whether as a fan meeting a childhood idol or as a parent creating cherished memories with family.BANDS MENTIONED: Dave Matthews Band, Dave Matthews, BBMak, Ed Sheeran, Bush, Silverchair, Harry Styles, Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Page (referenced indirectly in the episode), Backstreet Boys (mentioned in the context of boy bands), *NSYNC (mentioned in the context of boy bands), New Kids on the Block (mentioned in the context of boy bands).VENUES MENTIONED: Amphitheater, Aragon Ballroom, Soldier Field, House of Blues. Have you ever thought about the story behind your favourite band? How did they create their sound, how did they become a world-wide sensation, how did it all start? In 1994, three young teenage boys from Newcastle, Dan, Ben and Chris aged 14, entered a competition to record a song at the studios of the station Triple J. Scott Hicks is an Academy Award nominated director, with his Best Picture nominated film Shine bringing his work to international attention, alongside the work of the films subject, pianist David Helfgott. We're now some twenty-six years removed from the release of Shine, and the echoes of its impact continues to resonate within the creative minds of those who have become vessels for music. In Scott's latest film, The Musical Mind: A Portrait in Process, he explores just how that well of creativity is tapped into as he follows the lives and stories of four interconnected artists.First is David Helfgott, the centrepoint for each figure and a vital creative force who encourages, inspires, and energises those around him. Moments with his wife, the late Gillian Helfgott, show a supportive, nurturing relationship at work; one where Gillian sees the brilliance of David's mind and the manner that it operates and navigates his path of musicality. Then we meet the man who as a boy played the role of a young David Helfgott's hands in Shine: Simon Tedeschi. Simon is a genius in his own right, and with his story we hear how he navigated the complicated reality of being labeled a 'child prodigy', while also exploring the fractious state he was left in due to that level of reverence. We then flow into the orbit of another youthful genius mind, Daniel Johns. For many, we came to know Daniel through Silverchair, the iconic Australian band that worked with David Helfgott on their magnificent opus 'Emotion Sickness'. Daniel's story is one full of deep complexity. Here is a man who daily tries to grapple with what it means to be a creative entity. Like Simon, it's a complicated state to be in, and not one that Daniel himself fully understands as he sees himself as a conduit for the music, rather than being a musician himself. Finally, swirling into the orbit and feeling the tonal resonance of Shine play out in his own life, is Ben Folds. We see his Adelaide home and hear how his creativity moves forward in unexpected ways. In one awe-inspiring sequence, we see Folds train a captive audience in how to harmonise both together and separately, creating an aural experience that encompasses your heart as you hear it play out. These four figures - David, Simon, Daniel, Ben - each create a layer of a symphony that is tied together by the conductor Scott Hicks. The Musical Mind is a powerful and fascinating exploration of creativity and how important it is for it to be nourished and nurtured by those who see it emerging within individuals. In the following interview, recorded ahead of the films release on November 23, Scott talks about how his own creative mind works, how the sense of dreaming plays out when he's making a film, and what it means to be a filmmaker in Adelaide.
