Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) was a French writer who made significant contributions to the development of the short story genre during the latter half of the 19th century. Born on August 5, 1850, in Tourville-sur-Arques, France, Maupassant was influenced by the literary circle of Gustave Flaubert, who became his mentor. He began his literary career in 1880 with the publication of his famous short story, "Boule de Suif." Over the next decade, Maupassant produced a prolific body of work, including over 300 short stories, six novels, three travel books, and a volume of poetry. His stories, such as "The Horla" (1887) and "Qui Sait?" ("Who Knows?") (1890), often explored themes of madness, the supernatural, and the darker aspects of human nature. However, Maupassant's life was cut short by the effects of syphilis, which he had contracted in his youth. After a suicide attempt in 1892, he was committed to a mental asylum in Paris, where he died on July 6, 1893, at the age of 42. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The first significant published short story of French author Guy de Maupassant, and generally acknowledged as his greatest work, "Ball-of-Fat" (French title: Boule de Suif) is the touching story of an interrupted coach ride from Rouen to Le Havre during which occurs the corruption of a principled prostitute by immoral and hypocritical members of the upper class. The story is set during the occupation of Rouen at the time of the Franco-Prussian War.

In part two the travelers are growing more and more resentful of Boule de Suif as she continues to say no to the German officer- and they concoct devious ways to try to convince her that it is her patriotic duty to give in. Featured here: "La Marseilles" (near end), is the National Anthem of France. the song was written in 1792 by Claude Joseph Roget de Lisle in Strasbourg after the declaration of of war by France against Austria and was and is considered a patriotic war song. You might remember in Casablanca (at 1001 Heroes) in Rick's Bar, as the Germans began to sing their patriotic song, the free French in the bar countered with La Marseilles. First published in April of 1880, "Boule de Suif" is one of Maupassant's most famous and important stories. The term 'Boule de Suif' is most often translated as "Dumpling" or "Ball of Lard". The use of this no longer acceptable term for bigness was prevalent in those days and society's upper crust felt no guilt in using it in the presence of persons they thought of as coming from a lower class. In this story a carriage load of persons escaping the German occupation of their city of Rouen, France are traveling to Havre where they believe their French countrymen are still in control.. The division of classes evident throughout the trip allows Maupassant to hand a stinging rebuke to the ills of French society at the time, as one of the passengers, a courtesan, meaning a prostitute, is nicknamed 'Boule de Suif'. She, having thought to bring the only food, suddenly becomes popular when the trip bogs down into a 15 hour journey.. Film director & producer Chris DePretis joins Kirk to talk about the short story “Boule de Suif” by Guy de Maupassant. It is said that Maupassant is the most adapted literary writer after Shakespeare. Though this is hard to prove, because often his short stories offer a broad brush by which film directors like John Ford will use to paint. Nevertheless, his impact on world cinema is impressive. Besides Ford, many directors have adapted stories from the French short story writer, such as D.W. Griffith, Orson Welles, Jean Renoir, Kenji Mizoguchi, Jean-Luc Goddard and many more. These directors, of course, are the most influential directors in cinema. By proxy, very few people can claim as much influence on world cinema as Guy de Maupassant. In this episode, we summarize and discuss one short story in particular “Boule de Suif.” Then we discuss and compare the classic western movie Stagecoach (1939) starring John Wayne and directed by John Ford.We will be talking about the themes of both of these works as well as the way in which Ford was inspired by Maupassant. If you are a literary lover or a film buff, this episode is for you! Great art builds on great art.

Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant was a French writer, remembered as a master of the short story form, and as a representative of the naturalist school of writers, who depicted human lives and destinies and social forces in disillusioned and often pessimistic terms. Maupassant was a protege of Gustave Flaubert and his stories are characterized by economy of style and efficient, effortless dénouements. He wrote some 300 short stories, six novels, three travel books, and one volume of verse. His first published story, "Boule de Suif" ("Ball of Fat," 1880), is often considered his masterpiece, to which we may later attend. Today’s story, “A Ghost,” relates the tale of a brief haunting that results in a lifelong terror.
