This week, the editors talk with East Hampton resident Susan Stout, a certified end-of-life doula who helps terminally ill people and their families find peace with dying. Death doulas are not medical personnel and don't replace hospice care. Instead, doulas like Stout step in close to the end of life or after someone receives a terminal diagnosis to offer nonmedical, holistic support and comfort in a patient's final days. As Stout herself says, “We only die once, so it should be as beautiful as we can make it.”

If you have a differently wired child who is athletic and/or is into sports, this episode is for you. My guest is Susan Stout, the founder Own Beat Athlete, a new resource aimed at helping athletic coaches understand their athletes who march to a different beat. Susan knows from personal experience as an athlete herself, a former coach, and the parent of an athletic differently wired child, that many great athletes can be challenging to coach because of their wiring—they can be easily frustrated, disruptive, forgetful, inconsistent. But she also knows that they can be a teams' greatest asset. Susan's goal is to equip others with what she wishes she knew when she was a coach, and support and bring out the best in the many athletes who didn't fit the mold, with a specific focus on athletes with ADHD, learning differences, and anxiety. This is a really interesting conversation and Susan's resources are a great starting point for listeners who want to bridge that gap of knowledge between their child's behavior and their sports coach. I hope you enjoy it.Susan Stout is an advocate for athletes who are wired differently and struggle to participate or reach their potential in sports. She specializes in ADHD, learning differences and anxiety. Susan is the founder of Own Beat Athlete, a project to provide athletic coaches with the understanding and tools they need to help their differently wired athletes thrive. She brings to the work her perspective as a swimmer, coach, teacher, lawyer and mom to an avid and talented young athlete with ADHD and dyslexia. Things you'll learn from this episodeHow and when parents should let athletic coaches know about a child's wiringWhat kind of unique gifts differently wired athletes bring to their sportsWhat the common challenges are for differently wired kids participating in sportsHow parents can talk with their kids about learning how to self-advocate for themselves with their coachesSusan's thoughts on how willing coaches are to better understand and support their differently wired athletesHow Own Beat Athlete supports coaches (and parents of athletes) to know how to practically support and problem solve with challenges related to neurodifferencesWhat parents should look for to know whether or not they should step in Resources mentioned for coaching differently wired athletesOwn Beat AthleteOwn Beat Athlete / Susan Stout on TwitterSusan Stout on FacebookOwn Beat Athlete's Coaches' ToolkitSupport the showConnect with Tilt Parenting Visit Tilt Parenting Take the free 7-Day Challenge Read a chapter of Differently Wired Follow Tilt on Twitter & Instagram

There's no disputing that — especially team sports — can be a difficult environment for individuals with ADHD to naturally succeed in. It's not just developmental delays and social differences with peers that can make it tough. Things like emotional sensitivity and dysregulation, poor working memory, anxiety, and lagging executive functioning skills can also make it hard to meet peer and coach expectations, because they are set or neurotypicals. However, this doesn't mean that kids with ADHD cannot succeed and thrive in athletic endeavors. Join me as I talk with Susan Stout, founder of My Own Beat, about the challenging areas of athletics for those with ADHD and how you can help your child succeed in sports that are interested in and/or passionate about. Even if your child just plays Little League or Peewee Football, you can't miss this discussion. Listen now!

Susan Stout educates coaches specifically about working with kids who have ADHD, learning differences and/or anxiety. As a former swim coach and now a mom to an avid young athlete with ADHD and dyslexia, Susan wishes she had known when she was coaching what she knows now about how to recognize the differently wired kids, manage the challenges and bring out the best in these athletes. Routines help Give them a responsibility to keep them engaged Let them fidget and move Try to be patient - give them a minute to cool off Own Beat Athlete Website: ownbeatathlete.com Blogs, profiles of successful players and coaches with ADHD, letters from players Tools for coaches and facts to know about kids with invisible differences Cringe moment When Susan was first coaching, they lost a meet because the backstroke flags were the wrong distance. Susan was worried about over-coaching girls who had previously been her teammates. She learned she needed to be the coach first and not worry about trying to impress them or be their buddy. Keeping training fun Relay races are always a great way to compete and have fun while conditioning Achieving peak performance under pressure They start meets with cheering and getting energy up. Then she would have the athletes come and check in with her before their events to chat one-on-one. The coaching is finished at this point - instead reinforce them and tell them - 'you've done it, the work is done, now go have fun and show what you can do' The one that got away As a swimmer, for 3 years Susan was trying to break 36 seconds. 3 times she got 36.00. She still had a great time, just wishes she could have got a 35.99. :) Best stolen idea Building a culture of being a family. Favorite books/quote: Quote: 'A common mistake amongst those working in sports is to spend a disproportionate amount of time on X's and O's as compared to time spent learning about people.' - Coach K Quote: 'When I was a young coach, I used to say treat everybody alike.
