Terramation, Natural Organic Reduction, Human Composting – whatever you call it, let's get down in the dirt to discuss this body disposition option! In this earth-shattering episode, I talk with Mike Reagan about how a Colorado company is taking this innovation in body disposition in a different, yet down-to-earth direction. Mike says, “We want to enable existing funeral homes and crematory operators to open up their own termination facilities and serve their local communities. These folks are passionate about embracing this green option and serving their community, and we are here to help.” Innovation and expansion?! Let's dig in! Enjoy this conversation with end-of-life doula Mike Reagan. How can we embrace opportunities to “serve” at the end of life? What does it mean to “show up” when someone is dying? Is it possible to engage with all that death presents us with? Mike shares some meaningful insights and experiences from his service of sitting with people at “the 11th hour” as a hospice volunteer. Reflective of cultural beliefs and personal experiences, this episode encourages listeners to open up and discuss these difficult yet enriching topics.MORE ALI MEZEY:Website: www.alimezey.comPersonal Geometry® and the Magic of Mat Work Course information:www.alimezey.com/personal-geometry-foundationsTransgenerational Healing Films: www.constellationarts.comMORE FLORENCE POPOFF:Website: www.gamriegardens.comInstagram: @gamriegardensMORE KAREN BELLONE:The Seventh Sense website: www.theseventhsense.orgFilm Website: www.kbfilms.comBIO:Founder, Doula, Educator: Karen Bellone, MFA, is a Certified End-of-Life Doula and Death Educator. She is the founder of The Seventh Sense in NY's Hudson Valley, where she is an integral part of a worldwide community that is reigniting the wisdom of death within our modern lives. She is also founder of Exit Strategy for Dying, a monthly Death, Arts and Culture Readers supporting a resource hub to educate and refocus the narrative around death and grief through the lens of arts, culture, storytelling and innovation. Prior to embracing her passion for end-of-life work, Karen has had a long career as an award-winning filmmaker and internationally collected photographer. She received a BFA in Film Production from New York University, and did graduate work with the world-renowned Actors Studio, through their inaugural program at the New School for Social Research. After training and becoming certified with INELDA (International End of Life Doula Association), Karenworked with an innovative hospice in Los Angeles where her skills as a death doula were developed and broadened. In addition to working with patients in various stages of their life journeys, she was responsible for training the volunteer staff, nurses and other hospice and medical professionals to bring more understanding, humanity and compassion into their work with the dying. She spoke regularly with groups, such as the Alzheimer's Project, about the role of the doula at end-of-life, and the space that can be held to bring about ‘a good death'. She believes strongly in the ability to demystify and assuage the fear that surrounds death in our culture and to foster safe passage for the dying, as well as to aid the families and loved ones through grief and bereavement. As a visual artist and storyteller, Karen acquired a multitude of skills throughout her career that unlocked a deep passion for the healing power of visual and auditory perception on human consciousness. She integrated these strengths and resources into tools to bring aid and comfort for those imminently facing their mortality. Working with somatic and sensory awareness, Karen utilizes visual, sound and meditation therapy, personalized guided imagery, and commemoration of the sacred in the form of ritual, legacy and memory work, in order to bring comfort - physically, emotionally, spiritually to celebrate and commemorate the life of the individual. In addition to her ongoing private practice, Karen is currently directing a feature film about living American artist Michelle Stuart, whose work also engages with the elemental and ineffable nature of existence.RESOURCES:Edgar Allan PoeExit strategy for dying (Karen's monthly newsletter)All the Little DeathsAllen GinsbergKaren's Episode A 'Good Death', Death Doula: Embracing Life & Mortality PART ONEIn Buddhism, death is viewed as a natural part of the life cycle and an opportunity for spiritual growth. The concept is deeply intertwined with the notions of impermanence (anicca) and rebirth (samsara). Rather than being an end, death is seen as a transition, where the energy of one's consciousness continues in a new form, influenced by karma—the cumulative effects of one's actions, thoughts, and intentions. The ultimate goal is to break free from the cycle of death and rebirth through enlightenment, which means reaching a state of liberation (nirvana) where the mind is free from suffering and attachment. Mindfulness and acceptance of death are considered essential practices, as they help individuals live more fully and prepare for the moment of death with clarity and peace.Green burial is an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional burial practices that emphasizes simplicity, sustainability, and minimal impact on the earth. It typically involves using biodegradable materials, avoiding embalming chemicals, and opting for natural settings like conservation areas or designated green cemeteries. The goal is to allow the body to decompose naturally, returning nutrients to the soil, and preserving the surrounding ecosystem.Lambing season in Scotland, typically from March to May, is a busy and vital time on farms, as thousands of lambs are born each spring. This period is crucial for the meat industry, with farmers carefully tending to both ewes and newborns to ensure their health and growth. While lambing is often seen as a symbol of renewal and the start of spring, it is also a time of intense labor and long days for shepherds, who balance the joy of new life with the practical realities of raising livestock for food production.A Dream Within a DreamBY EDGAR ALLAN POETake this kiss upon the brow! And, in parting from you now,Thus much let me avow —You are not wrong, who deemThat my days have been a dream;Yet if hope has flown awayIn a night, or in a day,In a vision, or in none,Is it therefore the less gone?

Intro to the Podcast: My guest, Gina Economopoulos has quite the unexpected twists, turns and cliffhangers in the chapters of her life story. Even as unique as our individual stories are I feel sure you'll find many ways that you can connect with Gina. Her message is most definitely is for us all, God never gives up! Raised in a large, traditional Italian-Greek family, Gina's early life was a rich tapestry of Catholic values and unconditional love. The seventh child of 8, Gina was doing all the expected things as well as all the typical things of her youthful days in college and young adulthood but as life does, her world is flipped upside down and for her it was the death of her mother. Gina shares her story of navigating the fragility of life both in her (in her brokenness and searching for love and purpose) as well as the brokenness of the world around her. Throughout her mistakes, searching, challenges and heartbreak after heartbreak, Gina maintains her out-going, people loving personality. Her resilience continues to bring her faith to the forefront and even her sense of humor remained albeit, at times it was used to cover up the pain. A quick line of events for Gina's life gives you the overview of the various challenges and a glimpse of God's faithfulness to be along for the whole journey. A child who had medical/health complications that lead to a feeling of lack and the need to excel and prove her worth. In college she was a party girl and also graduated with a degree in social work. Out of college she began bartending as a career but as mentioned it was the death of her beloved mother that shook her to the core. She found herself turning back to her Catholic roots, searching for meaning and solace in her grief. This loss acted as a catalyst, propelling her into a period of searching for something more profound—something to fill the void that partying and alcohol could not. Her spiritual journey took a sharp turn when she joined a convent, seeking a deeper relationship with God and a sense of belonging. Despite her efforts to discover the peace she thought the convent would give her, the challenges within herself as well as the added difficulties and conflicts with the other nuns/sisters, would lead to her being asked to leave the convent. This was a devastating blow that increased her feelings of lack, adding more confusion and uncertainty. The next chapter of Gina's life brought her back into the world where she would need a job and a paycheck, problem is she hadn't worked for 12 years. So she returns to what she knows best, bartending. Her knowledge of religion struggles against the intimate relationship with Christ that is developing but it's never more challenged than when she finds love and is then forced to endure the heartbreak of losing her fiancé and his death is associated with alcoholism. She walks away from God but little does she know, God never gives up and she hasn't given up either, she just doesn't know it yet. She goes to a global recovery program modeled after AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) called The Rooms. Heartbreak/pain and anguish were in full anger and hatred mode but just maybe a tinge of fear lead her to The Rooms. And this is the very place where she slowly allows God to reveal Himself in a deeper and more intimate way. Learning that God never gives up on us solidified her journey from religion to relationship and it's been maturing ever since. Gina's story highlights the incredible resilience of the human spirit and the unwavering belief that even in the darkest times, there is hope and healing available. Her message is clear: don't give up, because God never does. He loves you and He will transform you if you let Him. It's a testament to God's heart to save, heal and redeem. No matter how winding the road may be God is there every step of the way. God never gives up on us! In this connected conversation with Henry Fersko-Weiss, the creator of the first End-of-Life Doula program in the United States, we discuss what it means to be a Death Doula. Rather than focus on the technical services a Death Doula can provide, Henry and I dive into the spiritual and generational support that can come from this uniquely powerful role in the dying person's life. We talk about legacy work, about agency in the dying process, and about why and when you might want to hire a Death Doula. In addition, Henry and I speak at length about the Death Doula training and how going through it has helped me and so many others to live life more meaningfully, gratefully, and expansively. Henry Fersko-Weiss is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) as well as a death doula. He has worked with hundreds of dying individuals and their loved ones as a hospice social worker, volunteer coordinator, and manager. As a doula he has been at the bedside of a great many people as they journeyed through the dying process. He has also maintained a private practice for 25 years, focused on helping people face death and grieve their losses. In 2003, while working at a large hospice in New York City, Henry created the first end-of-life doula program in the U.S. to serve people in the months before death, through the final days of life, and to guide loved ones into the early days of their grief. The training he developed then was based on what he learned from birth doulas and his experience with the dying. Henry is the author of Finding Peace at the End of Life, A Death Doula's Guide for Families and Caregivers. Henry has a number of trainings coming up which can be found on his site. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lara Land is a trauma-informed yoga teacher trainer, mindfulness coach, death doula, forest therapist, and crisis counselor. "People are beginning to get comfortable with the idea that it requires just as much planning to transition out of this world as it does to give birth and bring a new soul into this world.” - Dr. Tamara MacIntyre According to a recent study, nearly half of participants (47 percent) admitted they were afraid of death. Some of those factors include fear of pain and suffering, fear of the unknown, fear of non-existence, fear of eternal punishment, fear of loss of control, and fear of what will become of our loved ones. In today's episode, Dr. Michelle Robin invites Dr. Tamara MacIntyre to share why there are ways a person can begin to get comfortable with the idea of dying with the help of an end-of-life doula. Dr. Tamara will also share her story of becoming this type of doula for people, and some of the greatest lessons she has learned about living through those facing death soon. She will also unpack why it's just as important to have an end-of-life doula as it is to have a birth doula. “People don't even know they can die with a level of love and peace that is outside the conventional approach,” she shares during the conversation. About Today's Guest: Dr. Tamara MacIntyre, certified End of Life Doula, is also a chiropractor, doctor of functional medicine and recovering high ed administrator. Tamara is the co-founder of The PRANA Foundation (www.PranaFound.org) where she offers education, mentorship, and retreat to others serving in health and healing professions. She is passionate about assisting, fostering agency and empowerment while educating and supporting others in choosing a death that aligns with the core values that have defined the way they have chosen to live their lives. Her vision is to facilitate a space where people are more curious than afraid; acknowledging that this beautiful life is finite. Tamara offers end of life education, individualized and small group care planning and client advocacy. An exceptional and informative episode with guest, Anna Marie Adams (Certified End-of-Life Doula and founder of the International Doula Life Movement) will encourage all caregivers to realize the value of the extensive care a doula can bring to every member of a family. Host Mary Anne Oglesby-Sutherly and Anna understand the impact of helping thousands of families during their most critical times when dementia and death happens with their loved ones.
