How can a doula support people who are dying and those important to them? Dr Emma Clare, chartered psychologist, end of life doula, and director of End of Life Doula UK, joins host Stephen Rumford to unpack the often misunderstood role of the doula. Unlike a healthcare professional, a doula offers emotional, practical and human support at the end of life, simply by being there, witnessing, and walking alongside. Drawing on her clinical training, academic research, and personal experience, Emma shares how doulas help people reflect on their lives, find meaning, and feel less alone in the face of death. Together, Emma and Stephen explore what it means to be truly present, why connection matters so deeply, and how anyone, not just professionals, can bring more honesty, care and calm to conversations about dying. This is a grounding, moving conversation for anyone interested in what it means to show up with compassion at the end of life. Years ago, I stood beside countless patients in the hospital, overwhelmed by the harsh realities and often unmet emotional needs at the end of life. It was during this time that the profound importance of open conversations about death began to unfold before me. Now, as a death doula, I invite you to join a transformative journey towards understanding grief, preparing for life's end, and embracing the sacredness of these inevitable experiences. Together, we'll explore how shifting our perspectives can change not only how we approach death, but how we live our lives with more intention and purpose. Born and raised in the vibrant community of Syosset, New York, Gina Economopoulos emerged as the seventh child in a family of eight whose roots were deeply intertwined in an Italian and Greek-loving family. She grew up in a Catholic traditional upbringing with unconditional love from her parents, despite facing numerous surgeries from a young age, each shaped her into the resilient individual she is today. With a degree in social science from Eastern CT State University, she ventured to Harrisburg in 1989, where she seamlessly blended her social work background with bartending, embodying the essence of hospitality. Following the loss of her mother to cancer in 1992, she embarked on a spiritual journey that led her to the convent for twelve years before caring for adults with disabilities. Settling on the tranquil shores of the Jersey Shore in 2010, she encountered love and loss, finding solace in sobriety through Alcoholics Anonymous. Today, as an End of Life Doula, she extends her compassionate heart to those in their final chapter, grounded in faith and guided by the wisdom of the scriptures. She is also very much involved in the rooms of AA in service and reaching out to other alcoholics. Whether enjoying simple pleasures like playing golf, shooting pool, traveling, or going to the beach, she navigates life's journey with gratitude and grace, forever grateful for the blessings that adorn her path. Terramation, Natural Organic Reduction, Human Composting – whatever you call it, let's get down in the dirt to discuss this body disposition option! In this earth-shattering episode, I talk with Mike Reagan about how a Colorado company is taking this innovation in body disposition in a different, yet down-to-earth direction. Mike says, “We want to enable existing funeral homes and crematory operators to open up their own termination facilities and serve their local communities. These folks are passionate about embracing this green option and serving their community, and we are here to help.” Innovation and expansion?! Let's dig in! Enjoy this conversation with end-of-life doula Mike Reagan. How can we embrace opportunities to “serve” at the end of life? What does it mean to “show up” when someone is dying? Is it possible to engage with all that death presents us with? Mike shares some meaningful insights and experiences from his service of sitting with people at “the 11th hour” as a hospice volunteer. What if we could respond with our presence as those we love enter the final stage of life? https://www.thenaturalfuneral.com/ https://www.instagram.com/thenaturalfuneralcolorado/ https://www.facebook.com/thenaturalfuneral
