Are you treating your tax refund like “free money,” or like the hard-earned money God has entrusted to your family? In this special episode, Amanda and Jonathan Teixeira of WalletWin join Timmerie on Relevant Radio to discuss how Catholic families can navigate tax refunds, rising costs, supply chain concerns, and everyday money decisions with prudence instead of panic.Together, they unpack why a tax refund is not a bonus from the government, but money you already earned, and how to use it wisely through budgeting, debt payoff, emergency savings, generosity, and family priorities. They also discuss how Catholics can think about stocking up, preparing for uncertain financial times, and caring for their families without falling into fear or hoarding.Amanda and Jonathan also answer listener questions about buying a car while living paycheck to paycheck, whether young couples need a financial planner, how much rent is too much, budgeting as a married couple, and starting a Roth IRA. The episode also includes a personal update from the Teixeiras on welcoming their fifth child through adoption and the role of faith, openness to life, and St. Joseph's example in their family story.

The projects we're moving forward with, the systems we're simplifying, and a few things we're choosing to let go of entirely.Because here's the truth most people don't talk about... You don't have to do everything to build a successful homestead.

Female skunks usually only have one litter each year, but male skunks can reproduce with more than one female during the breeding season, according to the University of Michigan. Skunks have a gestation period of 63 days. The young are born in April or May and the average litter contains about six young with litters ranging from two to ten. Young skunks remain in the nest from six to seven weeks before they start accompanying their parents. Check your property for potential den sites. Baby skunks, known as kits, are protected by their Mother who seeks out safe, sheltered spaces to raise their young, often choosing burrows beneath porches, crawlspaces, or other structures. Den openings are usually four to six inches wide and may have a faint skunk odor. Now is a great time to inspect your property and take steps to humanely discourage skunks from settling in. Warning: a skunk can spray multiple times, reaching up to 15 feet! If your dog has sprayed, the recommendation is to: Wash out their eyes and mouth with clean water Bath them with a skunk shampoo. Commercial products are available but you can make your own with 3 parts 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1 part baking soda, and a teaspoon of dish soap. Wash them a second time with your normal pet shampoo Check them for bites as skunks can transmit rabies Monitor for illness for the next couple of days and consult with your veterinarian if there is any abnormal behavior Reference: https://wayne.osu.edu/news/skunk-mating-season-could-be-tricky-pets Experts Warn of a Big “Bug Boom” Across the U.S. This Summer A surge in insects could be on the way across the United States this spring and summer, according to experts—and it may be noticeable just about everywhere. Entomologists with the National Pest Management Association say unusual winter weather has created the perfect conditions for bugs to survive and multiply. As a result, Americans can expect pests to show up earlier than normal—and in larger numbers. The science behind it is fairly straightforward. A mix of mild winter temperatures, insulating snow, and early spring warmth allowed more insects to make it through the season. Now, rising heat and moisture are helping those populations grow quickly. Jim Fredericks, a senior official with the group, says this kind of extreme and inconsistent winter can have a ripple effect, boosting pest activity well into the warmer months. Experts warn that mosquitoes, ticks, flies, ants, and even cockroaches could all be more active than usual in 2026. That includes popular travel spots like beaches, parks, and other outdoor destinations. The takeaway: be prepared. Stocking up on bug spray, staying alert outdoors, and taking simple prevention steps could help reduce the impact of what's shaping up to be a very buggy season. Reference: https://parade.com/travel/united-states-destinations-swarmming-with-bugs-this-summer https://www.southernliving.com/bug-boom-spring-summer-11930064 According to the CDC regarding ticks, there has been a surge across America in recent years of Lyme Disease. How Lyme Disease Spreads Lyme disease bacteria causing human infection in the United States are spread to people by blacklegged (Deer Tick) ticks. In general, infected ticks must be attached for more than 24 hours to transmit infection; prompt tick removal can prevent transmission. Infected ticks are found most commonly in forested areas in the northeastern, north-central, and mid-Atlantic states, and in smaller areas within Pacific Coast states. In 1970, 85-year-old Nellie Farmer lived quietly in a modest retirement hotel. A retired schoolteacher, she had spent her life helping others and asking for very little in return. One night, that safety was shattered. An intruder broke into her room while she slept. Nellie Farmer had been brutally raped and strangled with a scarf. Her body was discovered face down on the bed, partially covered by blankets, as if someone had tried to hide what they had done. At first, it looked like a single, terrible crime. But it wasn't. Police quickly arrested a man who admitted he had been in Nellie Farmer's room the night she died, but he insisted someone else was responsible. His story pointed the finger at a mysterious accomplice known only by a nickname. That testimony would send a man to prison, but was he the right man? As the years passed, the case began to unravel because Nellie Farmer's murder was not the end of the story. It was only the beginning. Stocking Classrooms, Building FuturesA first-year teacher stands in an empty classroom with a key in her hand and a knot in her stomach. Twenty-six desks. Bare walls. One loud thought: School starts soon, and the room has almost nothing.Dr. Megan Brown, an associate professor of education at Cedarville University, knows that moment well. Coursework can cover research and best practices. Training can shape strong habits. Still, the first year in a real classroom brings a different kind of weight — especially when the space begins as a blank slate.Megan teaches literacy courses to future educators, and she talks plainly about what teaching requires. Learning is hands-on. Students need materials in their fingers so ideas can stick in their minds. Yet school budgets only stretch so far. Families can only do so much. Teachers often fill the gaps with their own money: pencils, tissues, notebooks, cleaning supplies, even backpacks. For a new teacher, those costs add up quickly. That's where Malena Ball comes in. A 2022 Cedarville graduate with a degree in strategic communication, Malena now serves as marketing director for Crayons to Classrooms. In that role, she helps connect educators to practical, personal support. The Dayton-area nonprofit provides free classroom supplies for teachers in 144 schools, reaching more than 50,000 students through the teachers it serves.Malena has watched teachers push carts down the aisles and still expect a bill. “How much do I owe?” they ask, looking at the price tags left on some items to show their value. Volunteers smile back. “Nothing.” Relief softens shoulders, and gratitude shows up as tears. Being seen does that.Crayons to Classrooms stocks the consumables that disappear by October — glue sticks, erasers, paper, pencils. But Malena calls it more than a resource center. It's a care center. Teachers find air filters, hygiene products, Band-Aids, sanitizer, and tissues. Those supplies don't just serve learning. They support dignity, comfort, and confidence.Megan watched one new teacher arrive after visiting her classroom for the first time. Empty room. End of July. No paycheck yet. She left with two full carts squeezed into a small car and a face filled with relief. Now there was something to build with. That “something” reaches far past academics. A spare notebook helps a student keep up. A backpack handed quietly to a child in foster care says, “This is yours.” A pencil offered without a lecture says, “You matter here.”Megan and Malena shared these stories on the Cedarville Stories podcast. Their message? Equip teachers with training, care, and supplies. When teachers feel supported, students feel it too. And that feeling can shape those students' futures.https://share.transistor.fm/s/7fa1e2bdhttps://youtu.be/_4X2P8hjSuk

“I do think as a founder of a small business, if you can get face to face with someone, you sell them on the story, not the product”. On this episode of eCom@One, host Richard Hill sits down with Fran Gresswell, the dynamic founder of Riviera Iced Tea, a premium drinks brand she launched while still at university. Fran's journey is nothing short of inspiring: from bootstrapping her business and overcoming a devastating £12,000 loss to a manufacturer, to landing her product in over 400 independent retailers and major venues, including the Co-op and prestigious spots like Chatsworth and Holcombe Hall. This conversation dives into the realities of building a brand in the tough world of physical products without the cushion of huge funding or sugarcoating the setbacks. Fran shares her honest experiences hustling for retail listings; literally walking into cafes and stores, selling her story face-to-face, and building relationships with buyers through persistence and timing. We hear how Riviera repositioned itself as a premium non-alcoholic alternative, leveraging TikTok and personal branding to drive growth and turn viral moments into wholesale success. Fran opens up about navigating tight margins in food and drink, the impact of rising costs, and the strategies she's using to stay resilient as a founder including email campaigns, guerrilla marketing, and adapting to changing consumer habits. If you're a founder or marketer navigating retail, D2C, or just curious about what it takes to build a brand from scratch in today's market, this episode brings grounded advice, practical insights, and a hefty dose of real talk from someone who's living it every day. 00:00 Local Spotlight: Riviera Iced Tea 04:15 Lessons from a Costly Mistake 06:29 "Overcoming Doubt in Business" 11:45 "Flavors Drive Iced Tea Success" 13:24 "Securing Retail Listings Journey" 16:16 "Festival Sales Strategy Insights" 21:06 "Expanding into Ideal Venues" 23:57 TikTok Boosted My Business 28:26 "Rewarding Loyal Customers First" 29:46 "Subscription Plan Discussion Insights" 33:10 Small Business Challenges Persist 35:57 "What Keeps You Up?" 39:09 Learn from Business Failures

Other items include flashlights and batteries, baby needs and first-aid supplies. In other news, Garland ISD's board voted Tuesday to support a proposal that would end more than a half-century of court supervision. The 6-0 vote came weeks after the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Texas filed a motion seeking to have the district's 56-year-old desegregation order lifted; a man has been sentenced to life in prison and found guilty by a Collin County jury for the kidnapping and sexual assault of an 8-year-old child in Plano in the 90s. Sixty-five year old Nicholas Carney of Ardmore, Okla., was sentenced to life in prison, 34 years after the initial crime he committed was reported; nd after five years serving Southern food in Dallas' Lakewood neighborhood, Palmer's Hot Chicken will close at Mockingbird Lane and Abrams Road and move to a delivery, catering and food truck business. Does stocking more bass actually lead to better fishing, or are we just throwing money in the water? I sat down with a fisheries biologist to uncover the surprising truth about bass stocking and why it might be hurting your local lake.In this episode, we dive deep into the science of fisheries management. Many anglers believe that the solution to "slow fishing" is simply adding more fish, but the reality is much more complex. We discuss carrying capacity, genetic integrity, and the specific outcomes biologists look for when managing public and private water. Whether you're a tournament angler or a pond owner, this conversation will change how you look at water management.
