Decades have passed since World War II, but the memories are being kept alive. The stories of the atrocities of the Holocaust and what people endured still emerge. The actual accounts, and the novels that are based on facts. Baila Sebrow, producer and host of The Definitive Rap interviewed author Tara Ison who wrote At the Hour Between Dog and Wolf. At The Hour Between Dog and Wolf is the story of a twelve-year-old Parisian Jewish girl in World War II France, living “in hiding” as a Catholic orphan with a family in a small village. When Danielle Marton's father is killed during the early days of the German Occupation, her mother sends her to live in a quiet farming town near Limoges in Vichy France. Now called Marie-Jean Chantier, Danielle struggles to balance the truth of what's happened to her family and her country with the lies she must tell to keep herself safe. At first, she's bitter about being left behind by her mother, and horrified at having to milk the cow and memorize Catholic prayers for church. But as the years pass and the Occupation worsens, Danielle finds it easier to suppress her former life entirely, and Marie-Jean becomes less and less of an act. By the time she's fifteen and there is talk amongst the now divided town of an Allied invasion, not only has Danielle lost the memories of her father's face and the smell of her mother's perfume, but her very self, transforming into a devout Catholic—and an anti-semitic, fervent disciple of fascism. During the interview Tara talked about her personal life and how she came up with the idea for this story, why the story is set in WWII France, as opposed to another occupied country. Tara described the interesting research she did to write this book, and about the characters, particularly how Marie-Jeanne turns into an antisemitic fascist.
Today's guest is Tara Ison a writer and author of several books, and currently a Professor of Fiction at Arizona State University. Tara Ison discusses her new novel, "At the Hour Between Dog and Wolf". Tara and Betsy discussed how the transformation of the character Danielle/ Marie-Jeanne was just shocking! A young French Jewish girl becoming a Fascist! The discussion leads to Anti-Semitism, and how it is on the rise.Tara and I also discussed the importance of understanding our past, because if we don't learn from History we are doomed to repeat it. They both agreed that there is a powerful lesson for all of us and that it's important to stand up against oppressive systems, even when they hide behind the promise of safety or freedom. We are providing the Audio Interview with Betsy Wurzel and Tara Ion in depth on the book, Anti-Semitism. This a must to listen to this interview. If we do not learn from history our world is doomed to keep repeating.

Brian and Lee talk with Tara Ison, professor of Fiction at Arizona State University. Professor Ison discusses her new book “At The Hour Between Dog and Wolf”. Matt Crawford speaks with author Tara Ison about her book, At the Hour Between Dog and Wolf. A 12-year-old Parisian Jewish girl is forced into "hiding" as a Catholic orphan in WWII France. When Danielle's father is killed during the German occupation her mother sends her away where she must take the name of Marie-Jeanne. At first bitter Danielle slowly begins to doubt her own identity as the years tick by. What follows is an emotional an oft overlooked aspect of the holocaust, the loss or suppression of one's identity due to shame and self-preservation. I hope all will give this powerful story a read,

Ball (Soft Skull Press)Tara Ison's Ball is the thrilling and emotionally provocative debut collection of short fiction by the acclaimed author of the novels Rockaway and A Child Out of Alcatraz and the essay collection Reeling through Life.Ball explores the darker edges of love and sex and death, how they are intimately and often violently connected, with bright, vivid stories set mostly in contemporary Los Angeles. In "Cactus," a young girl comes to fear the outside world following the freakish, accidental death of her adventure-seeking, naturalist boyfriend in the California desert; in "Wig," a woman must help her best friend face life-threatening cancer while covering up an unseemly affair with her friend's husband; in "Fish," the narrator sits watch over a dying uncle, trying to pay for past sins while administering to his final needs, but distracted by the ravenous fish in the Koi pond near the hospital; and in the collection's stunning title story, the bonds of friendship and pet ownership collide in the most startling and unexpected ways. With a keen insight into the edges of human behavior and an assured literary hand, Ball is the new book by one of the West's most provocative stylists.Praise for Ball "The stories in Ball take place at the far limits of obsession and desire and lust, exploring the dangers of turning toward the kinds of love we have tried always to refuse. Tara Ison is a fearless writer, and her bravery before the dark urges of the heart thrills on every page."--Matt Bell, author of In the House upon the Dirt between the Lake and the Woods "Tara Ison is the mistress of bad behavior. She divines the beauty in darkness. She twists the familiar--a friendship, an apology--till something fantastic cracks. And she will have you in thrall to her gorgeous language. The stories in Ball are exquisite and harrowing. Must read straight through. Must remember to breathe." --Dylan Landis, author of Rainey RoyalTara Ison is the author of the novels The List, A Child Out of Alcatraz, a Finalist for The Los Angeles Times Book Prize, andRockaway, selected as a "2013 Best Books of Summer" by "O Magazine." Her short fiction and essays have appeared in "Tin House," "The Kenyon Review," Nerve.com, "Publishers Weekly," and numerous anthologies. She is the co-author of the cult film "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead."
Tara Ison, author of "Reeling Through Life: How I Learned to Live, Love, and Die at the Movies," joins us for an insightful and entertaining conversation about the remarkable influence of films on her understanding of the world.
