When family stories become show biz stories, the world listens. Fitting that very bill we've got actor Keith Coogan, the grandson of the original child star, Jackie Coogan, whose namesake law in the state of California, is the first to safeguard the rights of young performers in Hollywood. Keith talks about growing up with this legend plus his own iconic roles as a prolific film and TV child actor!Keith's career proves that show business blood runs thick: He told his mother he wanted to act before he even knew of his family legacy. His great grandfather, Jack Coogan Sr. was a Vaudeville and silent film star. His grandfather, Jackie Coogan was known, in the 1920s as, “the most famous boy in the world!” Keith began booking roles by the age of eight and quickly became a go-to casting choice, for TV guest spots and commercials starring Henry Fonda and Robert Morse.Keith's show biz success made his grandfather proud but a little jealous and relieved when Keith developed into a working actor rather than America's darling.Keith tells us about the legendary events, which led to The Coogan Act - After Jackie's father died in a car crash, the young superstar's hard earned fortune was squandered by his stepfather.Passed in 1939, The Coogan Law requires that a portion of a child's earnings be placed in a blocked trust account until the child turns 18.Keith recalls with great fondness his experiences working with stellar casts and crews on the “Babysitter” cult greats, 'Adventures in Babysitting', and Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead. Plus Toy Soldiers, The Waltons and The Fox and The Hound. We play IMDB Roulette and get into Laverne and Shirley, Mork and Mindy, and Little House! In recommendations-- Weezy: Netflix series, North of NorthFritz: Book, How Democracies Die by Daniel Ziblatt and Steven LevitskyPath Points of Interest:Keith Coogan Keith Coogan on WikipediaKeith Coogan on IMDBKeith Coogan on InstagramKeith Coogan on XKeith Coogan on YouTubeKeith Coogan on FacebookKeith Coogan MerchNorth of NorthHow Democracies Die by Daniel Ziblatt and Steven LevitskyMedia Path Podcast

This week I am joined by Danielle, a formal journalist, who I met at the ATX TV Festival, and she wanted to cover one of her favorite movies, Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead. If you don't know what the film is about, here is the synopsis: Sue Ellen Crandell (Christina Applegate) is a teenager eagerly awaiting her mother's (Concetta Tomei) summer-long absence. While the babysitter (Eda Reiss Merin) looks after her rambunctious younger siblings, Sue Ellen can party and have fun. But then the babysitter abruptly dies, leaving the Crandells short on cash. Sue Ellen finds a sweet job in fashion by lying about her age and experience on her résumé. But, while her siblings run wild, she discovers the downside of adulthood. White Wine Spritzer: Ingredients 3 parts Sauvignon Blanc 1 part club soda Lime wedge Directions Pour wine into an ice filled wine glass. Top with club soda, and garnish with a lime wedge. Or you could always make a martini & rossi on the rocks, that is both sweet and dry. Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead Drinking Game (drunkenme.com): Drink when... Gus is hit on by Sue-Ellen. Walter is seen watching TV. someone gives a reason why the babysitter isn't there. Kenny is seen drunk or stoned. Sue-Ellen lies. something is bought with the "borrowed" petty cash. one of Sue-Ellen's fashion "designs" is shown. "Clown-Dog." If you don't know what that means, I just clowned you, dog. Caroline acts like a bitch. As always, drink responsibly and with others. Follow or subscribe wherever you listen to the podcast. Anika and Liz sign up for an internship, accidentally steal a ship, and … well, we're discussing the second season premiere of Star Trek: Prodigy! (Please note we have seen the whole season, and although we make some very virtuous remarks about sticking to the episodes at hand, we cannot be trusted to respect the Temporal Prime Directive.) The binge model and Star Trek Dal versus the education system Sexualising the Diviner Zero's story is both a trans narrative and a disability narrative The romances in this series are super low key and free of inherent drama … but would there be a bigger fandom if the show provided more fodder for ship wars? "Dishes are done, man." The summer's here, and according to these two outrageously nonsensical comedies set in the sunny season, it's a time for pretending that asocial psychopaths who unexpectedly die are still alive and kicking - literally. Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman are the lunkheads keeping their boss Bernie moving, while Christina Applegate and Keith Coogan make use of a skateboard and trunk for their babysitter. Plus, behind-the-scenes fun facts, poll results, interactive trivia, and listener shout-outs! "I'm right on top of that, Rose!"
Summer's here! The kids are also home from school which means parents need babysitters to make their great escape. Look no further than Mrs. Sturak, who's timely death kicks off the plot of our latest flick, Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead. It's got Christina Applegate in all her glory as she tries her best to hold it down looking after her miscreant siblings. Is it worth your hard-earned petty cash or should it stay in the 90s, much like slap bracelets? Hit play and find out. Dishes are done, man! Yes, it's finally here. The day we are talking the 1991 hit and fashion foundational film, Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead. It's been a long time coming since this is my first official complete watch ( I know I'm ashamed, don't talk to me). Charles tells the story about how this is one of the building blocks of his film education, and for good reason. I get into why no one told me me there was a c***y version of Mulder and Scully, why Rose Lindsey is best feminist icon, and just how worthless the rest of this family is besides Swell. Also touching on the scary realities of the corporate world, the feeling when you first discover 'petty cash', and the similarities to 'The Hills'. Off-topic rants include: office horror stories, Drag Race, my first time viewing of Chinatown, early Project Runway ---Get BONUS episodes on 90s/00s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! For reasons know to no one they decided to remake Don't Tell Mom The Babysitters Dead. Casey and I really liked the original and decided to revisit it. Is it really Home Alone times five like the VHS cover says? Or is it just an okay coming of age story? Watch and found out!

This week we present our second ever installment of the "We-Watchables" series where Todd and I both watch a film or show and talk about it for an hour and a half. As you can see, it's the early 90s Christina Applegate classic "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead" that Todd and I both have seen dozens of times, and we were happy to watch it again for this pod. Being Swell in Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead (1991) was Diane's ultimate fantasy as a kid. Does child neglect pass the smell test? Tune in to find out! (Please note the audio this week is a little shoddy, but what are you going to do about it? Take the $0 we make from this away?)

This is a particularly fun episode if we do say ourselves. Join the gals this week for some chit chat about their current (and probably forever) obsession with Steve Harvey's Celebrity Family Feud and the prospect of Nicole Kidman playing Kristen Stewart's part in Panic Room, amongst many other things. THEN they go over an amazing Reddit thread about the butterfly effect in pop culture history. How did 9/11 cause the downfall of Ellen? Listen in and find out! Katie and Bridget drop off their dead babysitter at a random cemetery as they re-watch the movie: Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead! It's a story all about a loving family of 5 siblings who have to make it on their own for an entire summer... I mean technically that's true but the "loving" part is certainly debatable! Come along as we meet Sue Ellen (aka Swell!??!?!?), the oldest of the 5 siblings who becomes head of the house after their summer babysitter literally dies only 2 hours into babysitting. She loses a pizza box bet to her brother Kenny and has to go off and get a job. Luckily, her forged resume isn't questioned at all by Rose - the senior executive at this "bowels of the fashion industry" company (her words not ours!). Sue Ellen learns what it's like to be an adult all while committing multiple felonies along the way. Will the kids be able to survive the summer without getting arrested, dying of starvation, or falling off the roof? Well one kid falls off the roof, but the rest they survive! Released in 1991, it stars Christina Applegate, Joanna Cassidy, Josh Charles, and a severely underutilized David Duchovny.
Is this the longest title we've ever had? For an episode? Yes, probably. Was this movie, as Lindsay loves to say, "unhinged"? You better believe it was. Had she ever seen it? Nope! That's what made it all the more enjoyable, honestly. With a title that completely makes you think something different than what actually happens, a lead in the absolutely, outrageously gorgeous Christina Applegate and a plot that's... ... well it's actually pretty straight forward, what can we say?Make sure to subscribe to Behind the Timeline for all of our newest updates and episodes!
