Te Aroha Hohaia grew up moving around the North Island, lived in a caravan as a child, and didn't discover tramping until adulthood - starting with a summit climb of Taranaki. She shares how that first mentally and physically demanding experience reshaped her relationship with the maunga, leading to repeated climbs and a deeper connection with Taranaki. After getting hooked on tramping she decided to walk sections of Te Araroa, choosing autumn and spring windows until a breast cancer diagnosis and double mastectomy disrupted her seasonal plans. Te Aroha shares her favourite moments from the trail, walking with her mokopuna and adapting plans to fit in extra sections. She shares the benefits of section walking Te Araroa and the joy of returning to a trail and having something to look forward to each season. Abigail & Isaac are kayaking for 1,000km from Cape Reinga to Tauranga in Feb-Mar 2026 to raise $20,000 for mental health and the ocean. New GPS trackers on Matamata's kerbside bins will keep waste in its place. From September, the Waikato township along with Te Aroha and Morrinsville residents are ditching the bags and wheeling in a standardized four-part rubbish and food scrap disposal system. Black latches on the bins hold RFID trackers to help relocate any lost bins and assist contractors in counting daily collections. Matamata-Piako Mayor Adrienne Wilcock spoke to Corin Dann.
More than 11,000 people reported feeling the earthquake that hit just after 2am on Friday. The magnitude 4.8 quake was centred 5-kilometres south of Te Aroha, at a depth of 6-kilometres. People from Kaitaia, through to the sodden regions of Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Coromandel, and even down in Christchurch, reported feeling it. A series of weaker aftershocks began to strike 40 minutes later, although there are no immediate reports of damage as of yet. It's not the first quake to hit Te Aroha this year - a 5.1 quake rattled the town on January 4. Te Kuiti resident Zane Burdett and Kees Meinderts from Motumaoho, just south of Morrinsville, spoke to Corin Dann.
If the weather's not enough for those in the north, Waikato residents were rudely awakened by an earthquake which struck at 2am this morning. The magnitude 4.8 quake was centred 5-kilometres south of Te Aroha, at a depth of 6-kilometres. There have been no immediate reports of damage. Geonet's Seismic Duty Officer Libby Abbott joins us now.
The Waihou River has burst its banks north of Te Aroha, blocking State Highway 26. And in the Coromandel Peninsula, people are being urged to stay off the roads until further notice, with extensive road closures in effect. State Highway 25 is closed between Coromandel Town and Whitianga. And Thames Coromandel Mayor Len Salt told Tim Dower that State Highway 25A between Kopu to Hikuai is likely to be closed for months, after being effectively destroyed by a significant slip. Following a 10-year hiatus to work on other projects and student politics as well as the imminent digital release of his back-catalogue, we can announce that New Zealand producer Deadbotz Kid will be releasing his new studio album "Shadow Theory" on February 18th, 2023.Influenced by Indie Rock and elements of Dance Music Shadow Theory was written and recorded in Morrinsville, Te Aroha, and Hamilton, New Zealand; in secret recording sessions over 2020-2022, the album details his journey through the pandemic years and his subsequent battle with mental health issues and life events within that time. Featuring 11 tracks and 7 guest vocalists from the USA, Argentina, Hungary, and France; Shadow Theory clocks in at 49 Minutes."These songs were never meant to be released. To me, this was a therapeutic exercise to express how I was feeling in a very shaky and uncertain period of my life. Unknowingly these songs came from that therapeutic exercise as a blessing and have acted as a vehicle to reconnect with life, faith, family, and the thing I care about the most that I lost sight of during the pandemic and the madness that came with it. I hope this album will connect with you and help you on your own paths too, just like they did for me".- Deadbotz KidShadow Theory will be available on CD, Vinyl, and Digital Streaming outlets on February 18th, 2023. Pre-Orders will begin on February 1st, 2023, for all platforms. In the meantime, you can stream the first single from the album "Brightest Star" on Deadbotz's website and on streaming sites from February 1st, 2023. Hosted on Acast. She's spent years collating over 8-thousand pieces in her Te Aroha abode, not including the walls of book and newspaper clippings dating back to 1837. Their immaculate home in Te Aroha is full to the ceiling with royal decor and open for tours. Throughout their many decades honouring the royal family, the Queen sent several gifts. Angela Thompson spoke to Susie Ferguson.

You may be a fan of the classic Kiwiana beverage Lemon & Paeroa, but did you know it wasn't the first lemon soda created in the Waikato? Lemon & Te Aroha - made with mineral-rich water from the spa town of Te Aroha - appeared 19 years before Lemon & Paeroa but disappeared into its shadow in the early 1970s. Now, 50 years on, L&T is coming back to market.
The four-day celebration marking Queen Elizabeth's platinum jubilee has finished as it began, with a spectacular display of pageantry in London. Our next two guests, New Plymouth's Barbara Larsen and Angela Thompson, from the Waikato town of Te Aroha, were with us on Friday to chat about their hopes for the long weekend. Barbara was four when she began her 81 years of collecting royal books and magazines. Angela's home is filled with over 8000 items of royal memorabilia. They spoke to Susie Ferguson.
A four-day celebration is under way to mark Queen Elizabeth's platinum jubilee, beginning overnight with a spectucular display of pageantry in London. New Zealand played a part last night, on the steps to the Tangi Te Keo Mt Victoria lookout when mana whenua ignited a torch in a short ceremony. A choir then sung A Song for the Commonwealth, a piece specially commissioned with the chorus in te reo. Following her majesty closely throughout her 70-year reign has been two very keen royalists, New Plymouth's Barbara Larsen and Angela Thompson, from the Waikato town of Te Aroha. Barbara was four when she began her 81 years of collecting royal books and magazines. Angela's home is filled with over 8000 items of royal memorabilia. They spoke to Susie Ferguson.
