Seismic activity at sporting events is nothing new to Seattle fans. Many of us remember Marshawn Lynch’s 2011 BEAST-QUAKE. Seahawks fans revel in Lumen Field’s reputation for noise when opposing teams are on offense… Even T-Mobile Park has experienced its fair share of shaking. Earlier this year when the Mariners made it to the playoffs, the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network was on site to measure the bone rattling when the M’s hit home runs. And this past weekend, they were at the 49ers game with a live stream where fans could keep tabs on how much shaking was going on... Did you know that some rivers can actually change direction? It sounds wild, but it happens when big geological events like earthquakes, landslides, or even massive floods shift the land around them. One major river at risk of this is the Brahmaputra in India—it's a powerhouse of a river, but also a ticking time bomb. Experts say just one strong earthquake could cause it to completely change course, leading to devastating floods and destruction in the region. This is because the river flows through a seismically active area, where the Earth's crust is constantly moving. It's a reminder of how powerful and unpredictable nature can be! This week I'm talking FPS titles; Wolfenstien, DOOM, Quake, all the classics and not so classics I have ever tried my hand at. I admit I'm not an FPS guy or a keyboard and mouse warrior, but there is good to be had here. Stop by for some talk about the games as I experienced them in the times I experienced them, and of course, my hot and cold takes on the genre as a whole and the games themselves.
In this episode of AwesomeCast 761, Michael Sorg is joined by Intern Mac and Intern Tony for a wildly geeky night of robots, AI, VR, and very silly holiday gifts. We kick things off with the new Robosen Shockwave Transformer robot, a $1,000 self-transforming Decepticon boombox that doubles as a Bluetooth speaker, then fall down a rabbit hole of programmable Transformers, Buzz Lightyear, and WALL-E robots for STEM-minded kids. From there, Mac highlights Apple's latest Apple TV “liquid glass” intro, crafted with real glass panes and practical effects instead of AI – a hopeful sign for human artists in an AI-heavy world. Sorg shares what it's like living with an AI-generated news anchor on his Telly-style TV, including a bizarre “buff Judge Elvis” story that looks nothing like the real judge and points toward a future of AI hosts on gas-station and in-store TVs. The crew then revisits GameStop's “Trade Anything” day, reacting to reports of taxidermy, cans of beans, cursed plushies, and stressed-out employees caught between corporate hype and real-world chaos. On the gaming and VR side, we look at a mod project that brings classic shooters like Quake III, Doom 3, Redneck Rampage, and Quake 4 into standalone VR on Meta Quest headsets and reminisce about the clunky mall-VR rigs of the 1990s. Chachi's Video Game Minute covers the Helldivers movie, Netflix's proposed Warner Bros / WB Games deal, and rumored Japanese studios making design applicants draw by hand to avoid AI shortcuts – which leads into a deeper chat about Netflix potentially owning Mortal Kombat, Batman Arkham, DC Comics, and what that means for movies and games. Tony's Awesome Thing of the Week is pure chaos: the TikTok-viral “Butts on Things” activity books, puzzles, and Cheek-to-Cheek card game – proving once again that everyone finds butts funny and weird gifts win Christmas. We wrap with internship reflections, from Apple sock purses and new Apple gadgets to everything Mac and Tony have learned about podcast production, live streaming, editing, and social media on the Sorgatron Media shows. Stick around to the end for a tease of our Patreon-exclusive segment featuring the creepiest robot dogs you'll ever see.

If you've been watching AI tools race into marketing and tech, but aren't sure what's hype and what's actually useful, this episode is for you. Mod Op's Head of Technology in Calgary, Derek McBurney, unpacks how generative AI, code assistants and “vibe coding” are really changing the way digital experiences get built. He explains in plain language what AI code assistants actually do, when they genuinely speed teams up and when they quietly introduce bugs, tech debt or just plain slop. You'll hear concrete examples of using AI to handle tedious work—like transforming messy spreadsheets—so developers can spend more time on the creative, pixel-perfect experiences that matter most to customers. Derek also digs into how no-code and vibe-code tools are empowering marketers, designers and non-dev teammates to prototype real concepts quickly, without replacing the need for strong engineering fundamentals. Throughout the conversation, Derek keeps coming back to two big themes: ambition and responsibility. He shares practical guidance for CMOs and marketing leaders on setting guardrails, protecting proprietary code, avoiding skill erosion and deciding when to build vs buy in an AI-driven world. Leader Generation is hosted by Tessa Burg and brought to you by Mod Op. About Derek McBurney: Derek is the Head of Technology at Evans Hunt, focusing on delivering meaningful digital experiences and sharing his knowledge about building the web for humans. He's been building websites ever since he first got online. At the age of 12, it was a fan site for the game Quake, with nothing more than a text editor to create some HTML. Now? Clients like Travel Alberta, Calgary Stampede, and Brookfield Residential, which compose builds using best-in-class technologies for performance, accessibility, and intuitive authoring to power beautiful and rich experiences. About Tessa Burg: Tessa is the Chief Technology Officer at Mod Op and Host of the Leader Generation podcast. She has led both technology and marketing teams for 15+ years. Tessa initiated and now leads Mod Op's AI/ML Pilot Team, AI Council and Innovation Pipeline. She started her career in IT and development before following her love for data and strategy into digital marketing. Tessa has held roles on both the consulting and client sides of the business for domestic and international brands, including American Greetings, Amazon, Nestlé, Anlene, Moen and many more. Tessa can be reached on LinkedIn or at Tessa.

Machinima — a portmanteau of “machine” and “cinema” — refers to movies filmed inside video games. The art form had a renaissance in the 1990s, and many thought it had a future in Hollywood. Among the early pioneers were the New York animation collective the Ill Clan, who puppeteered characters in real-time inside the video game Quake, bypassing traditional animation rendering. This technique exploded into a cultural phenomenon through the 2000s with hits like Red vs. Blue, South Park's Emmy-winning World of Warcraft episode, and This Spartan Life, a live talk show filmed inside Halo 2's unpredictable virtual world. However, machinima.com faced controversies and eventually shut down, erasing its archive and leaving many original artists sidelined. Today, machinima is experiencing a powerful resurgence in documentary filmmaking. Projects like Grand Theft Hamlet, filmed during the pandemic entirely within Grand Theft Auto 5, proved that sophisticated feature films could be created in active, real-time virtual environments. Award-winning documentaries like The Remarkable Life of Ibelin showcase the medium's emotional depth and its potential for democratizing creativity. What started as a technical workaround has evolved into a legitimate art form that continues to redefine the meaning of movies, and games. Credits: This episode was produced by Andrew Callaway and edited by Chris Berube. Mix by Martín Gonzalez. Original music by Swan Real, Jamilah Sandoto and Paul Vaitkus. Fact-checking by Lara Bullens.
