Humanity has a default definition of success. There is a measure of earthly achievement—and we all strangely know it. The problem is, this earthly idea doesn't match God's definition and God's measurement for success. This discrepancy often plays havoc in the believer's life. As young believers, we often launch out into life attempting to build up the skills, the knowledge, and the aptitude to succeed in a manner that will cause an outbreak of applause amongst the world, while, often, God isn't stirred one bit by the sight of our pathetic endeavors. Let's talk about the fish. While this tends to be everyone's focus in the book of Jonah, the richness of the message is not about the fish but what happens from within the belly of that beast. In this study, we examine Jonah 2:1–10 and specifically talk about what Nathan calls the “positive parenthetical poetry of praise” (i.e., Jonah's prayer). In January 2002, 20-year-old Christopher Thompkins mysteriously vanished while working as a land surveyor in the woods near Ellerslie, Georgia. Walking just 50 feet behind his coworkers, he disappeared without a sound, leaving behind only a boot, scattered coins, and his tools near a barbed wire fence. Despite extensive searches using helicopters, dogs, and ground teams, no trace of him was ever found. Theories about his disappearance range from foul play and disorientation to supernatural or extraterrestrial involvement, yet none have been substantiated. Established in 2008, the luxury womenswear label Emilia Wickstead has become known in the industry as the epitome of modern femininity. Born in New Zealand to a part-New Zealand part-Italian mother and a part-Samoan father, Emilia was raised in the suburbs of Pakaranga, Ellerslie and Parnel in Auckland. After her father, an artist, passed away when Emilia was four, her mother Angela Wickstead founded her own successful made-to-measure fashion line. Emilia spent her formative years observing her mother build her business, assisting in fittings after school. At the age of fourteen Emilia moved to Italy when her mother married an Italian, spending her teenage years studying in Milan. There, Emilia became mesmerized with the world of luxury fashion. At eighteen she moved to London to study Design and Marketing at world-renowned university Central Saint Martin's, graduating with Honours in 2007. In the Wright Brother's story of flight, wind was an essential ingredient. First it was the natural winds of Kitty Hawk—they learned to master the gusting winds, gain lift, and soar. But, then, in 1904, they needed to figure out how to fly even when there wasn't any wind. And this challenge proved to be an even greater problem. The Apostle Paul submits a challenge to the psyche of every believer when he describes the idea of becoming a “fool for Christ's sake.” After all, the reason we as believers “believe” in Christ in the first place is because such an action is deemed the wisest and most reasonable conclusion to the dilemma of Sin and Death. As humans we have a proclivity towards the easiest route, the most comfortable way. We will purposely avoid difficulty, pain, and suffering and steer clear of inconvenience. And in so doing we are missing out on the best life has to offer us. For it is through these various trials that we exponentially grow and strengthen. These difficulties are our best friends and they work to build in us the necessary character, strength, and fortitude to change the world. God designed mighty oak trees to grow out of small acorns. The same is true in our lives. Our small decisions in life are the acorns that form the basis of our growth, our direction, and our trajectory. The Wright Brothers laid the foundation of their lives in humble, hidden, hard work in a bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio. This “acorn” grew up to be a mighty oak tree of impact in the world. In 1886 Orville Wright died . . . sort of. We don't want to give away any spoilers, but the simple fact that Orville invented (with his brother, Wilbur) the first operational airplane in 1903, it maybe goes without saying that his death in 1886 must have been short lived. But so are all the deaths that we have along the way in our Christian life. Like Orville's death in 1886, God will bring us to our end so that He can work a wonderful new beginning in us. This is what happened in Orville's life. At the conclusion of the 19th century it was determined by the intellectual elite that human controlled flight would NEVER happen. In fact, it was officially declared to be “impossible.” Such was the challenging soil in which the Wright Brother's miracle discovery of “human controlled flight” was fostered. There are two ways to do ministry. You can either do in it your own strength or in God's strength. Most of us theologically know that the “God strength” option is the superior way, but that doesn't mean we know how to employ it.
