After an unlawful expulsion and a high-stakes power struggle, Mariameno Kapa-Kingi is breaking away to start her own political party. In this exclusive interview with The Hui presenter Julian Wilcox, she speaks candidly about leadership tensions, misogyny claims, and why she says “the time is right” for a new political movement. Ngā mihi ki a NZ On Air & Te Māngai Pāho
Mark Mitchell and Ginny Andersen are back with Mike Hosking to delve into some of the biggest political stories of the week thus far. They discussed the 24 year political career of Judith Collins, who is resigning from Parliament and taking up a new role with the Law Commission. They also discussed Mariameno Kapa-Kingi's split from Te Pāti Māori to form her own party and what this may mean for Labour and the Māori seats – plus, the former Labour staffer linked to the troll social media account. Mariameno Kapa-Kingi spoke to John Campbell following her announcement to form her own political party.
Te Tai Tokerau is shaping up to be an electorate to watch this election. MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi is splitting from Te Pāti Māori to form her own party after months of ructions between her and the party's leaders. She'll run in her electorate under a party of the same name. Former Māori Party Co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell told Mike Hosking she could win the seat as she has a foothold in an electorate already. But he says history is typically against smaller parties – particularly those wrapped around a single individual. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A political science lecturer says party affiliation isn't everything in Māori seats, as Mariameno Kapa-Kingi breaks away. She's cut ties with Te Pati Māori to create the Te Tai Tokerau Party and run in the seat of the same name. Te Pati Māori's wished her well - but is promising to put up another candidate to take her on. Victoria University's Lara Greaves says it's an open race for all seven seats. "They're hyper-local, so local issues are really important - but also, sometimes, strategy is important. Again, really hard to tell." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
An election law expert says it could work in Labour's favour for it to not win many Māori electorate seats. Te Tai Tokerau MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi has announced she is splitting from Te Pāti Māori and forming her own party. Otago University Law Professor Andrew Geddis says there could be overhang seats if either party wins electorates with a relatively small party vote. He says told Ryan Bridge it would then increase the number of MPs needed for a majority. Geddis says winning the Māori electorates could mean Labour falls short of being able to form a government. Our guest in this episode is Ashley Faus, a marketer, writer, and speaker who specializes in Human-Centered Marketing. Ashley is passionate about helping brands connect problems with solutions through authentic, lived experiences. Ashley joined me to discuss why human imperfection is becoming a premium asset and how we can navigate the skill gaps created by AI.Key points discussed include:* The critical need to preserve “101 level” learning opportunities for junior marketers to ensure future mastery.* Why “lived experience” and context allow humans to out-perform AI in nuanced tasks like planning and connecting.* How “imperfection,” like the “Gen Z shake” or a bakery box, builds more trust than AI-generated perfection.Listen to the podcast to find out more.Innovabiz Substack is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Show Notes from this episode with Ashley FausIt was a genuine privilege to welcome Ashley Faus to the Innovabuzz podcast for a conversation that felt less like an interview and more like a masterclass in human connection. Ashley, a marketer, writer, and speaker, joined us to unpack the concept of Human-Centered Marketing. We dove straight into the deep end, exploring a question that has been on my mind lately: what happens to trust and judgment when AI can generate almost anything on demand? Ashley's take is refreshing. She believes that while AI is a powerful tool, it lacks “lived experience,” and that is where our true value as humans lies.We started by discussing a potential crisis in skill development. Ashley framed this brilliantly using a university analogy. She explained that she got to where she is today - solving complex “801 level” problems - by spending years slogging through the “101 and 201 level” work. Her concern is that if we enthusiastically hand off all that junior-level work to AI, we deny the next generation the opportunity to learn through doing. It is a powerful reminder that the “grunt work” is often the training ground for mastery. If we outsource the learning process, we risk creating a future workforce that lacks the critical thinking skills to spot when the AI is hallucinating. The Party Planning Test: Why Context is KingI loved Ashley's practical examples of where AI falls short. She shared a hilarious story about using AI to plan a party. It calculated she needed 200 beers for 50 people, completely ignoring the wine and the non-drinkers! A human host knows intuitively that cold weather affects beer consumption or that half their friends prefer wine. AI doesn't have that context. It can crunch numbers, but it can't “read the room” before the party has even started. This lack of nuance extends to our personal lives too. Ashley noted that asking AI to plan a date night is futile because it doesn't know you had Thai food for lunch or that you have leftover spaghetti in the fridge. Humans thrive on these subtle, unspoken details. We build relationships by sharing these small, messy, lived experiences. When we try to strip that away for the sake of efficiency, we lose the very thing that makes connection meaningful. The rest of these show notes continue for paid subscribers, where we dive into the specific human skills, like contextual curiosity and critical vetting, that Ashley believes are the only true antidote to the “efficiency trap.”If you're looking for a thoughtful, human-centered take on how we build the next generation of leaders in an automated world, I'd love you to join the inner circle. It's where we explore the unpolished insights that keep our human edge sharp.Maybe they'll sharpen yours too.The Uncanny Valley and the “Gen Z Shake”One of the most fascinating parts of our chat was about the “uncanny valley,” that unsettling feeling when something is too perfect. We talked about how polished content, like a perfectly lit video or a flawless photo of a playground with no children, can feel eerie. Ashley pointed out the rise of the “Gen Z shake,” where creators intentionally leave in the fumble of setting up the camera. That lack of polish signals: “I am a real person, not a bot.”It turns out we are naturally skeptical of perfection. Ashley shared a story about her baking. She noticed that when she brought homemade cupcakes in a flimsy cardboard bakery box, people assumed they were store-bought and raved about them. When she brought them in a sturdy plastic tupperware, the reaction was muted. Even more telling, people on LinkedIn trusted a “good enough” photo of the cupcakes more than a technically perfect one. The perfect photo felt fake, even though it was, indeed, real. The imperfect one felt real. In a world of AI-generated flawlessness, our human imperfections are becoming our premium asset.Trust, Logic, and AuthenticityWe wrapped up by looking at the “Trust Triangle” of Logic, Authenticity, and Empathy. Ashley argues that AI can mimic logic, but it fails hard on authenticity and empathy. Authenticity isn't just about being honest; it is about showing the messy work of how you got there. It is about the “blooper reel” at the end of the video that proves you are not just reading a script. So, where do we go from here? Ashley believes the most important skill we can develop is skepticism, or perhaps, a skeptical curiosity. We need to pause, ask questions, and verify. We need to seek out real human conversations to keep us grounded. As Ashley so beautifully put it, the antidote to the noise of AI is simply more human relationships. In Summary:Ashley Faus reminds us that in a world racing toward automation, the things that make us “inefficient” - our stories, our context, and our imperfections - are actually our greatest strengths. By embracing our lived experience and staying curious, we can use tools like AI without losing the human connection that makes business, and life, worth doing. The Buzz - Our Innovation RoundHere are Ashley's answers to the questions of our innovation round. Listen to the conversation to get the full scoop.* Innovative AI with Human connection – Use AI as a persona simulator, prompting it to behave like your specific audience to test how your messaging and taglines truly land.* Best AI integration example – Debate with the AI by taking both sides of an argument yourself, using it to poke holes in your logic so you can better understand diverse viewpoints.* Differentiate with Connection – Cultivate a healthy dose of skepticism and curiosity, taking time to verify sources and think deeply rather than accepting AI-generated content at face value.ActionCall a friend, sibling, or someone you haven't spoken to in a while and have a real conversation. Get coffee or just talk on the phone to reconnect with the human experience.Reach OutYou can reach out and thank Ashley on LinkedIn, where she spends her time creating content and continuing the conversation in the comments and DMs.Links:* Website - Ashley Faus* LinkedInCool Things About Ashley* The Multihyphenate Performer: By day Ashley is a marketer, writer, and speaker; by night she steps into the roles of singer, actor, and fitness enthusiast, bringing stagecraft, discipline, and emotional nuance into how she communicates and leads.* The Generational Interpreter: Ashley acts as a bridge between boomers, Gen X, millennials, Gen Z, and Gen Alpha, explaining how each group learned to trust or question information and what that means for AI literacy and deepfakes.* The Job-Change Realist: Rather than buying into “AI will take all the jobs,” Ashley argues that humans tend to raise expectations instead of eliminating work, using examples like the internet and home appliances to show how roles shift rather than disappear.* The Imperfect-Photo Purist: From mosque ceilings in Istanbul to campaigns like “Visit Vienna, Not #Vienna,” Ashley consistently chooses personally meaningful, imperfect photos and experiences over “perfect” or AI‑generated images, reflecting her belief that real stories beat polished surfaces.VideoThanks for reading Innovabiz Substack! There'll be a wait until we learn the outcome of today's court case between expelled Te Pāti Māori MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi and her former party. The High Court at Wellington today heard arguments relating to the MP's expulsion from the party last year, which followed allegations she misused party funds. Newstalk ZB political reporter Ethan Griffiths says Kapa-Kingi's lawyers suggest the party was trying to hold her responsible for comments by her activist son, Eru Kapa-Kingi, who called out Te Pāti Māori's leadership. "Kapa-Kingi's lawyers say that she's not remotely responsible for her son's comments." The court's decision has been reserved. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

To odcinek o tworzeniu bajkowych dekoracji i celebrowaniu świąt w kraju, w którym podchodzi się do nich inaczej niż w Polsce.
Ousted Te Pati Maori MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi has been awarded a temporary court order to reinstate her into Te Pati Maori. Her case was heard by Justice Paul Radich in the High Court at Wellington on Thursday morning. She spoke with Mihi Forbes about her future plans.
MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi has been reinstated as a member of Te Pāti Māori, following an interim ruling by a high court judge, and will now attend the party's Annual General Meeting this weekend. Kapa-Kingi was expelled from the party, alongside Takuta Ferris, in early November after a period of internal conflict. The party's co-leaders said the decision had been make in response to "serious breaches" of the party's constitution. Both MPs have fiercely disputed their expulsions, with Kapa-Kingi taking her case to the high court. Political reporter Lillian Hanly spoke to Lisa Owen.
Newstalk ZB senior political correspondent Barry Soper talked to Heather du Plessis-Allan about today's political hot topics. Mariameno Kapa-Kingi has been reinstated to Te Pāti Māori, for now, after she took her expulsion from the party to court. Mariameno Kapa-Kingi's membership of Te Pāti Māori has been reinstated after she took her expulsion from the party to court. Although, the decision is an interim measure ahead of a substantive hearing on February 2, where legal expert Graeme Edgler believes her reinstatement will be reversed. Edgler told Heather du Plessis-Allan, "ultimately, if Te Pāti Māori wants to get rid of this person from their party, they'll probably be able to do it, and the courts will probably let them." They're both remaining defiant and have labelled the process illegitimate. Iwi Chairs Forum spokesperson Bayden Barber says he was trying to set up a meeting between the two factions for tomorrow, but that's not going ahead. He told Mike Hosking the two sides haven't talked in a month. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Te Pāti Māori's co-leaders won't share why their National Council decided to expel Tākuta Ferris and Mariameno Kapa-Kingi. The Council met last night to decide on the two MPs' fate. A sense the fall-out isn't over, after Te Pāti Māori's National Council has ejected two MPs from the party. Tākuta Ferris and Mariameno Kapa-Kingi are calling it unconstitutional, and will sit as independents in Parliament for now. It's after weeks of party in-fighting playing out in public. The party's co-leaders say they haven't considered invoking the waka-jumping law, but didn't rule it out. Former co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell says that seems to be the leadership's intention. "I still think there's a little bit of water to go under the bridge as yet - I understand there may well be some sort of legal challenges to process." Te Tai Tokerau MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi says she isn't going anywhere. Te Pāti Māori's President, John Tamihere, has suggested she and Te Tai Tonga MP, Takuta Ferris, should resign from the Party. That's his response to a petition launched by 'Te Tai Tonga Executive' - calling for his resignation. He's accusing the two MPs of avarice and entitlement, referencing Hone Harawira's split from the Party in 2011 - and telling them to do the "honourable thing'. Newstalk ZB senior political correspondent Barry Soper recaps the ongoing saga. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week marks Men's Mental Health Week in Aotearoa – a time to kōrero about the challenges that many men face, and to break down the stigma that still surrounds emotional well-being. For a long time, the phrase ‘harden up' has shaped the way men think about vulnerability, and in turn, often pushes men to bottle up emotions, instead of reaching out for help. ‘Soften Up Bro' is a kaupapa grounded in Te Ao Maori values, encouraging men to embrace softness, honesty and connection. To talk about men's mental health in Aotearoa and this movement, I spoke to co-founder of ‘Soften Up Bro', Heemi Kapa-Kingi.
