Te Tai Tokerau is shaping up to be an electorate to watch this election. MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi is splitting from Te Pāti Māori to form her own party after months of ructions between her and the party's leaders. She'll run in her electorate under a party of the same name. Former Māori Party Co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell told Mike Hosking she could win the seat as she has a foothold in an electorate already. A political science lecturer says party affiliation isn't everything in Māori seats, as Mariameno Kapa-Kingi breaks away. She's cut ties with Te Pati Māori to create the Te Tai Tokerau Party and run in the seat of the same name. Te Pati Māori's wished her well - but is promising to put up another candidate to take her on. Victoria University's Lara Greaves says it's an open race for all seven seats. An election law expert says it could work in Labour's favour for it to not win many Māori electorate seats. Otago University Law Professor Andrew Geddis says there could be overhang seats if either party wins electorates with a relatively small party vote. He says told Ryan Bridge it would then increase the number of MPs needed for a majority. Geddis says winning the Māori electorates could mean Labour falls short of being able to form a government. Te Tai Tokerau MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi has officially been reinstated to Te Pāti Māori, after a High Court decision ruled her suspension and expulsion was unlawful. The court found the decision breached the party's rules and requirements, and the relevant tikanga principles were not applied. Meanwhile, despite National's recent low polling the Prime Minister has received wholehearted backing from his caucus. Political reporter Giles Dexter spoke to Lisa Owen.

There'll be a wait until we learn the outcome of today's court case between expelled Te Pāti Māori MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi and her former party. The High Court at Wellington today heard arguments relating to the MP's expulsion from the party last year, which followed allegations she misused party funds. Newstalk ZB political reporter Ethan Griffiths says Kapa-Kingi's lawyers suggest the party was trying to hold her responsible for comments by her activist son, Eru Kapa-Kingi, who called out Te Pāti Māori's leadership. Ousted Te Pati Maori MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi has been awarded a temporary court order to reinstate her into Te Pati Maori. Her case was heard by Justice Paul Radich in the High Court at Wellington on Thursday morning. She spoke with Mihi Forbes about her future plans.

MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi has been reinstated as a member of Te Pāti Māori, following an interim ruling by a high court judge, and will now attend the party's Annual General Meeting this weekend. Kapa-Kingi was expelled from the party, alongside Takuta Ferris, in early November after a period of internal conflict. The party's co-leaders said the decision had been make in response to "serious breaches" of the party's constitution. Both MPs have fiercely disputed their expulsions, with Kapa-Kingi taking her case to the high court. Political reporter Lillian Hanly spoke to Lisa Owen.

Mariameno Kapa-Kingi's membership of Te Pāti Māori has been reinstated after she took her expulsion from the party to court. Although, the decision is an interim measure ahead of a substantive hearing on February 2, where legal expert Graeme Edgler believes her reinstatement will be reversed. Edgler told Heather du Plessis-Allan, "ultimately, if Te Pāti Māori wants to get rid of this person from their party, they'll probably be able to do it, and the courts will probably let them." Te Pāti Māori's co-leaders won't share why their National Council decided to expel Tākuta Ferris and Mariameno Kapa-Kingi. The Council met last night to decide on the two MPs' fate. A sense the fall-out isn't over, after Te Pāti Māori's National Council has ejected two MPs from the party. Tākuta Ferris and Mariameno Kapa-Kingi are calling it unconstitutional, and will sit as independents in Parliament for now. It's after weeks of party in-fighting playing out in public. The party's co-leaders say they haven't considered invoking the waka-jumping law, but didn't rule it out. Former co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell says that seems to be the leadership's intention. "I still think there's a little bit of water to go under the bridge as yet - I understand there may well be some sort of legal challenges to process." Te Tai Tokerau MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi says she isn't going anywhere. Te Pāti Māori's President, John Tamihere, has suggested she and Te Tai Tonga MP, Takuta Ferris, should resign from the Party. That's his response to a petition launched by 'Te Tai Tonga Executive' - calling for his resignation. He's accusing the two MPs of avarice and entitlement, referencing Hone Harawira's split from the Party in 2011 - and telling them to do the "honourable thing'. This week marks Men's Mental Health Week in Aotearoa – a time to kōrero about the challenges that many men face, and to break down the stigma that still surrounds emotional well-being. This comes as recent court documents and child welfare agencies have shown cases of adoptive parents with criminal histories abusing children who have been adopted from overseas. Recently, the Justice Select Committee has called for the Treaty Principles Bill to be thrown away. This comes as an analysis by Newsroom shows that 90% of public submissions were against the bill. The committee accepted close to 300,000 public submissions, with 90% opposing the bill, roughly 270,000, 8% in support, and 2% indifferent. In November of 1987, Sian Kingi, a 12-year-old schoolgirl, was riding her yellow 10-speed bicycle home after she had been shopping with her mother. When her mother arrived home, Sian was not there as expected. Meg tells the story of the abduction and murder of Sian Kingi and the couple who was responsible.

Troy Kingi - "All Your Ships Have Sailed" from the 2020 album The Ghost of Freddie Cesar on All Good Absolute Alternative Records When he began his career, New Zealand-based actor/musician Troy Kingi set a goal to release 10 albums in 10 genres across 10 years, which he calls the "10/10/10 project." Today's Song of the Day comes from his funk-inspired album, which is also his most personal album: it was inspired by a cassette tape owned by his father, who tragically disappeared around Christmas 2005, while driving between Rotorua and Auckland.  As he explained to Music 101, “It looked pretty old and had this hand-scribbled name, ‘Freddie Cesar' on it, and on the back was just handwritten names of songs. I recognized some of the songs from my early childhood back when my parents were still together and started writing down the lyrics as a form of therapy." A search for Freddie Cesar turned up fruitless, so Kingi began to recreate the songs himself. "It's kind of a dedication to my dad and Freddie Cesar, this album. Even though the lyrics aren't fully mine and the music's not fully mine, I feel him when I'm singing these songs."
