Saying Chris Lillis is a details guy is like saying he kind of wants to win another Olympic gold medal. Lillis won gold in mixed team aerials at the 2022 Beijing Winter Games. Making a second Olympic team in his discipline of freestyle skiing is arguably more mental than physical. Tracking the details of how he eats, sleeps, trains and recovers is crucial to unlocking what does and doesn't work for him as an athlete. The data helps shape his mindset training. The key to mental preparation is visualization. Chris says, "Visualization can just be like a kind of mental imagination, whether it's in the first person or the third person. You really just imagine yourself doing that jump." Aerialists are like acrobats on skis. They ski down a ramp, launch themselves in the air and complete a series of flips and twists while maintaining enough spatial awareness to land on on snow. Jumps last seconds. In today's Cloud Wars Minute, I dig into Microsoft's fiscal Q2 results, unpacking the headline RPO surge, the OpenAI effect, and what the numbers really say about future demand.Highlights00:10 — Want to talk about Microsoft's fiscal Q2, numbers that came out yesterday. That's for the three months ended, December 31 and there was some remarkable numbers in there, but we're going to dig into those a little. They're still remarkable, but they need to be understood in a deeper context, and I want to share that today.00:28 — So, the big number that jumped out to me very good, Q2 Microsoft Cloud revenue growth overall. But the big number that jumped out to me was for their Q2 RPO, remaining performance obligation, which is future contracted business not yet recognized as revenue. So, it's a look into the future the pipeline and customer demand for that.00:51 — Microsoft said their RPO for Q2 jumped 110% to $625 billion an enormous number that's even larger than Oracle, which in the past couple quarters, has leapfrogged Microsoft as the RPO leader. But now it's back to Microsoft. Now, that 110% includes an enormous deal, a commitment from OpenAI. I if we take that out the OpenAI commitment then the RPO growth from all of Microsoft's other customers grew 28%.01:29 — I'm not saying this try to undercut a tremendous performance by Microsoft. They earned that OpenAI deal. It's great. And hey, 281 billion is 281 billion, but this reflects a little bit of a different tone to that enormous number. Looking back the other direction, so not into the future with RPO, but the past three months, cloud revenue was up 26% to $51.5 billion.02:34 — Now the RPO totals, I mentioned, $625 billion. Microsoft said that 45% of that 625 billion, that equates to about $281 billion is from an a commitment for OpenAI for future cloud and AI infrastructure services.04:19 — Late last year, OpenAI signed a $38 billion deal with AWS. And there are not many $38 billion deals in any industry, of any kind, anywhere. It's only in the cloud — this greatest growth market the world has ever known — that you can look at a $38 billion deal and say, "Wow, that's 1/10 the size of these other deals with AWS competitors, Microsoft and Oracle." Oracle has risen to number two. Microsoft slides down to number three. Microsoft's held that top spot for four years. It's three times bigger than Google Cloud, but there's much more that goes into the Cloud Wars Top 10 than size alone.01:30 — We've got coming up a video with John Siefert, our CEO, and also a detailed article that looks at a lot of the key indicators behind Google Cloud's rise, points to some of the challenges Microsoft has faced, and also mentions how Oracle, too, has moved up here because it is doing more of what customers need to be successful in the AI Economy.02:06 — Thomas Kurian has just done a phenomenal job. When Kurian started, he said, “I need to triple the size of our sales organization.” So, while Google Cloud's always had great technology, its connection to customers and its way of engaging with customers was something that Kurian pretty much had to build from scratch.02:57 — I think Microsoft's cloud revenues, relative to Oracle, are seven times bigger, but it's more than that. Who's leading the innovation agenda? Who is taking these new ideas forward? Who is helping customers adapt quickly, transform quickly, and become the sort of companies they're going to need to be to succeed and win in the AI Economy?03:46 — When I started, a lot of people said, “You can't compare an infrastructure company to an applications company.” I said, “Sure, I can.” I felt that often these lists of who the leaders are in different markets or categories were driven by Silicon Valley, inside-the-industry perspectives. Here, I've tried to take a look at it for these nine years from the point of view of customers.04:24 — And I think in this case, regardless of the size differential, Google Cloud is doing more on both cloud and AI. I think about what Oracle's done to be able to come up to number two. A handful of years ago, Oracle said, “We're going full force into the cloud infrastructure business. We're going to become a hyperscaler.” Many so-called experts said that's crazy.05:01 — Yet, Oracle has built a huge and fast-growing business out of that. Okay, again, going back a handful of years, there were people who said AWS is the number one company. It's the king of the cloud. Nobody will ever be able to touch it or displace it. Well, Microsoft did that. Nobody owns first place. It's a temporary lease.06:03 — It's now Google Cloud, Oracle, Microsoft as the top three companies.
