Angela Maxwell spent nearly seven years walking around the world — solo. Covering over 20,000 miles across four continents and 16 countries, she braved the Australian outback, battled dengue fever in Vietnam, and faced the daily challenge of finding safe places to sleep, often in a tent. A self-described introvert and novice adventurer when she began, Angela's journey was as much an inner transformation as a physical one — fuelled by fear, curiosity, and an unwavering commitment to explore what it means to live with courage. Angela walked with purpose, raising funds to support girls rescued from human trafficking, and continues that mission through mentoring and women's empowerment workshops. She's been featured by Lonely Planet, BBC Travel, and Outside Magazine, and most recently became one of the first women to swim across the Caspian Sea — a feat that took 28 days and redefined her relationship with fear and endurance. Now based in Wales (for the moment), Angela is writing a book about her world walk and sharing her philosophy that “courage is a verb.” Whether she's walking, swimming, or simply choosing the unknown, Angela lives by example — proving that adventure doesn't require expertise, just the decision to begin. *** New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast drop every Tuesday at 7 AM (UK time)! In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we are joined by Tate Dobson, known on trail as Pyro. Tate is a certified wildcard. It's not just that he's hiked the PCT, AT, Long Trail, and Te Araroa, but how he's done it, including hiking the Appalachian Trail and Long Trail spending $1,000 (alongside Quadzilla), hiking long stretches with carrying a Jansport pack, another stretch using tote bag, hiking the R2R2R eating only Motts Fruit snacks and the 100-Mile Wilderness consuming only maple syrup and a jar of peanut butter. He's run a pair of ultramarathons around a roundabout, he's run a beer mile with his mom, and has accomplished another mile consuming four shots of tequila and a tube of toothpaste. In other words, strap in. We wrap the show with some bucket list hikes you can do over a long weekend, the triple crown of stuipd word spellings, a listener poop story, and more. Nobody's Fool by Harlan Coben. A former detective turned private investigator is stunned when the woman he thought had died 22 years ago suddenly appears in the back of a lecture he's giving, and as soon as they make eye contact, disappears. Her death has haunted him all these years but the possibility she could still be alive has never occurred to him – and now he needs to track her down and find out the truth. From the pen (or the keyboard!) of a terrific and well established thriller writer. Northbound by Naomi Arnold. Naomi is a local journalist who decided to walk the entire length of the Te Araroa trail on her own. There have been books from other people about taking on that challenge, but hers is a really gritty, no holds barred account of the slog of it – the mud, the fear, the loneliness and the exhilaration of achieving something so momentous, all by herself. It's clear there's a very caring network on the trail even though the walkers pass one another like ships in the night. There's also a lot of kindness from people around who keep an eye out on them and offer food and support. This book is a lovesong to the trail and the NZ outdoors; and to the power of communities. Naomi Arnold fulfilled a 20-year dream when she walked Te Araroa northbound (NOBO), from Bluff to Cape Reinga. What she expected to be a 4-5 month trail turned into 9 months as she juggled freelance work and writing a book on the trail. Her determination meant she pushed through all the physical and mental challenges, never for a moment wanting to quit, despite how tough it got. Her absolute favourite moment was the Tongariro Crossing and experiencing the forces of nature in the volcanic area. Naomi reflects on how hard the trail and physical challenges were day in and day out, and particularly the solitude she experience on the trail without meeting anyone else for weeks on end. A Far North famer who's losing hundreds of sheep to wild dogs wants the canine attackers officially labelled pests so there's more freedom to eradicate them. In January an international ultra runner and his support crew were attacked by dogs on the Te Araroa trail. There's still a wild dog warning along the Te Paki Coastal track about 14 kilometres from Cape Reinga. John Nilsson from Shenstone Farms spoke to Lisa Owen.
In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we are joined by Austen McDaniel, known on trail as PI. If that name sounds familiar, it's because we've been reading it off at the end of every episode for years, as Austen is one of our Chuck Norris Award-winning Patreon supporters. But in addition to being a longtime patron, Austen is also one hell of a backpacker, having completed the Triple Crown in three consecutive years. He approached his first thru-hike as prepared as anyone we've ever talked to, hitting the Appalachian Trail with a six-pound base weight after years of fine-tuning his setup on various shakedown hikes. He walks us through how he's managed to shave additional ounces and grams off his pack, shares some fun ultralight hacks, and offers tips for making cold soaking suck less. Of course, we also dive deep into his three thru-hikes. Beyond hiking, Austen gives us a glimpse into his life as a professional tennis instructor, if he's seducing moms at the country club, and how he managed to squeeze in some disc golf in various trail towns during his CDT trek. We wrap the show with news of an massive new FKT on New Zealand's Te Araroa, a breakdown of just how much Irish heritage runs through our DNA, including some truly deranged family tree math from Chaunce, the triple crown of food combinations, and possibly the greatest limerick in the history of the written language. Lauren Roerick is a Canadian adventurer from Southern Alberta who discovered her passion for long-distance hiking in her 30s. After being inspired by a fellow hiker training for the Appalachian Trail, she embarked on the Pacific Crest Trail, igniting a love for thru-hiking. Since then, she has tackled challenging routes like the HexaTrek in France and the Te Araroa in New Zealand, embracing a "comfort light" approach to gear. Currently based in Vancouver, Lauren works as a set decorator for film and TV while funding her travels through vlogging, guidebooks, and outdoor sponsorships. Her next adventure takes her to Japan, where she and her brother will complete the 1,200-kilometer Shikoku pilgrimage.
Today we are so very lucky to have Stefan Ozich, a man with an incredibly powerful story with eye opening and thought provoking views on mental heath and the importance of us understanding it so we can take control of it... After Stefan received news no one should ever have to receive he knew he needed to make a stand... Stefan set out on October 1st 2024 for what would end up being a long, gruesome and lonely journey along the Te Araroa trail. He set out with no more than his determination, thoughts and the selflessness act of aiming to raise awareness for Men's Mental Health and $1 million dollars for 'The Last Chance Project' a non profitable organisation that focuses their time on improving men's mental health and wellbeing here in Aotearoa. Not only did Stefan reach the end of Aotearoa, 114 after his first steps... He turned around and went back UP the country... Today we have Stefan in studio to talk about that journey and his why! Please remember Shifters that YOU are loved and wanted in this world... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Today on the show we speak to Stefan who has been running the Te Araroa trail twice to raise money for Mental Health. Support Stefans efforts here - https://bit.ly/3C8LbHI
In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, presented by The Trek, we're joined by Patrice and Justin La Vigne. Over the past decade-plus, Patrice and Justin have traded their corporate grind for, in their words, “a life less ordinary.” From their first thru-hike of the AT in 2011 (drink), to managing a hostel, embarking on multiple van tours to spread the thru-hiking gospel, thru-hiking the TA in New Zealand, and now living in a 300-square-foot cabin on the outskirts of Denali National Park in Alaska—they've done it all. We dive into how they restructured their lives around adventure, what it's really like living in a tiny cabin in remote Alaska, why moose are jerks, the challenges of thru-hiking with Crohn's, and much more. We wrap the show with the story of a man accused of staging a bear attack to cover up a murder, what the funniest sounding fart is (and introducing Chaunce to the world of covering your farts), and the triple crown of New Year's Resolutions. Taking a long holiday is on the minds of families across the nation. So if you're in the need of some inspiration today's guest from the archives might be able to help... Deanna and her family after months spent in lockdown decided they wanted to go on an adventure. So they mapped out their ideal holiday, a six-month trek across New Zealand on the Te Araroa trail, totalling 3000kms. From Cape Reinga on the North Island to a place called, Bluff on the South Island. So why in the world did they decide to do it? and what did they learn along the way? Anurag Sharma moved to New Zealand in 2002 but didn't start tramping until moving to Wellington 16 years later. Since then, he has done all the Great Walks and recently set his sights on Te Araroa. Although it started as something he would do "one day," losing his mother was a catalyst to set a date for Te Araroa and start preparing. Anurag talks about self-discovery and the importance of trying new things and stepping outside your comfort zone, particularly as a South Asian immigrant challenging cultural norms. Despite setbacks, including an ankle cyst, surgery and changing his start date, he is excited to start walking and raise money for 10 different charities. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by Shari Edelson. Shari is a PhD student researching human impacts in wilderness areas, specifically the impacts of human dookie in the backcountry. We chat about in which circumstances wagbags are warranted, the challenges with compliance when they are, when it's perfectly okay to bury your shit, and how future conservation efforts should be allocated to making this easier to understand for hikers. We also chat about Shari's thru-hike of the TA and are blessed with some plant fun facts, stemming from their background as a horticulturist. We wrap the show with how to score the most competitive long trail permits in 2025, if farts are pushing out poop or if poop is pushing out farts, and the triple crown of things that happen all the time but no one sees. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by Cam Bostock. With more than 600K Followers, Cam is a bonafide Instagram hiking celebrity. Cam teaches us all about his home, the great country of Australia, including his adventures on the Bibbulmun Track and Munda Biddi Trail, in addition to how often someone needs to fistfight a kangaroo, the frequency of deadly snake encounters, and other stereotypically dumb American questions. We also learn all about Cam's PCT trek, including all that goes into creating a polished Instagram Reel for every day of his hike, his favorite moments from the trail, and the biggest cultural differences between hiking in the US and Australia. We've all heard about the popularity of New Zealand's great walks, but there's a greater walk that's steadily growing in popularity. Katie Fitzgerald reports.
Thru hiker and author Lauren "Long Way" Roerick joins Doc in the studio to talk about some less familiar thru hikes out there. Settle in and buckle up as Long Way covers some serious territory in this episode, including discussion of Piglet, sunhoodies, thigh high mud, the Hexatrek, rugby, jiu jitsu, Chinese tonal throat singing, raccoon-like activities, hypothermic fun, the magic of not knowing what you're doing, Te Araroa, and the right to bivouac. Kristin is a thru-hiker, climber, and human rights activist from Norway currently living in London. Despite her outdoorsy upbringing in snowy Norway, it was only in her 20s that she discovered her own adventure journey. After going through a very tough time at university, Kristin decided to hike the Te Araroa across New Zealand's South Island as an existential journey to shed her depression when she was 22. Her thru-hiking journey has taken her across the world on trails such as the John Muir Trail, the GR11 Spain, the GR20 Corsica, and The Haute Route in Switzerland. She founded her blog, Let's Trek It, to share her adventures, tips, and inspire others to undertake their own wilderness journeys. *** Don't miss the latest episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast, released every Tuesday and Thursday at 7 AM UK time! In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by Quoc “Double Magic” Nguyen. Double Magic might just be the most accomplished backpacker you've never heard of, along with being in the running for most interesting person on earth. His 23,000 miles of backpacking started with trails you know, like the Colorado Trail and the Pacific Northwest Trail, and quickly evolved to trails you likely haven't including Norge pa Langs, Via Dinarica, the Colorado Loop (a 1500 mile route he made up), a pair of epic excursions in Alaska, and trekking around the Aleutian Islands, a thing people don't do. This one is a like a snowball rolling downhill, it gets more momentum and becomes more dangerous the further it goes. *10 February 2024 marks 5 years since the first episode of The Outdoors Fix podcast!* To celebrate this milestone, I've got a NEW PODCAST EPISODE for you of some of my favourite moments from The Outdoors Fix recordings over the years! I've loved speaking to every single one of my guests, but the moments I've picked are some of the snippets that have had the biggest impact on me and helped me to make the outdoors a bigger part of MY life. So if you'd like to listen, head to your podcast platform and I hope you enjoy the episode! I'd also love to hear what your favourite episode has been and why. I remember 10 February 2019 very clearly - it was a grey, drizzly day. I shared my first episode and then went on a long walk on the Capital Ring in London with friends to distract and shake off the nerves. It had taken me weeks to make fitting it around my job, I'd freaked out several times over the recording equipment, and I didn't know whether anyone other than my family would listen to it… But ever since my 10-week Te Araroa hike in New Zealand after burning out, and how much better the outdoors made me feel, I'd wanted to learn from the people who knew more about it than me, and share their knowledge. I hoped that perhaps the podcast could help us motivate and equip EACH OTHER to get outside and experience nature's power more often. Via 50+ conversations and episodes recorded all over the British countryside (favourite location so far was hiding from the rain in a sheep barn…), I've learnt so much about the outdoors, and I hope you might have taken away something too. But most of all, I think what I've found most valuable from these past 5 years was discovering something incredibly simple - that even just 10 minutes in nature can make things feel better. It's a tool that I wished I'd known about much, much earlier. I've also learnt that the people who love the outdoors are some of the kindest, most generous and inspirational people I've met. So thank you for all the support for The Outdoors Fix podcast since 2019 and to all my wonderful guests. What a ride it's been! Allegations of blackmail have been levelled at the owners of a North Shore property which is blocking access to walkers on a popular beach path. The owners want a heritage status removed, so they can sell the property for what it's worth. While the dispute rolls on with the Auckland Council, they've erected a fence on the popular Milford to Takapuna walkway which passes through their property. The path is also part of the 3,000km Te Araroa trail, which runs the length of the country. The owners' lawyer believes a commonsense agreement can be reached, and took the issue to a council committee meeting today. But he was met by mayor Wayne Brown who was not on the same page. Louise Ternouth reports
Over two recent summers, former newspaper editor Tim Pankhurst, his wife Sue and their friend Kerry Prendergast completed the epic 3021km Te Araroa Trail. The trio speak to Kathryn Ryan ahead of the launch of Tim's new book Every Effing Inch.
Today, I'm excited to share a behind-the-scenes look at the planning and preparation for my upcoming adventure on the 3,000km Te Araroa Trail in New Zealand. I recorded this episode, hours before I headed down to London to catch my flight to first Korea and then on to Aukland, New Zealand. In this podcast, I'll take you through the meticulous planning and preparation that goes into making these epic adventures come to life. From the nitty-gritty details on my to-do list to managing setbacks and equipment challenges. I share the story behind my sponsorship with ZOLEO and the invaluable benefits I've gained from their products. I'll also break down my approach to planning big adventures. Starting by dividing it down into the mental, physical, logistical, and practical aspects, offering insights that hopefully will add value as you plan your adventures. Throughout this episode, I'll candidly share the intricacies and hurdles I've encountered and why I take full responsibly for all my decision, even when those decision put me under huge amounts of pressure/stress to deliver. So, if you're curious about what goes into planning an adventure as massive as the Te Araroa Trail while running a business and keeping that business going while travelling. Then this podcast is a must-listen! Join me on my journey as I navigate the world of planning, preparation, and ultimately, adventure. Follow my Te Araroa Challenge on Instagram @toughgirlchallenges. In this week's episode, I'm talking to the inspirational Laura Waters. Laura is a travel writer, speaker, author and presenter who lives near Melbourne, Australia. She is the author of ‘Bewildered', a book about her solo journey hiking New Zealand's Te Araroa trail, 3000 kilometres of raw, wild, mountainous trail winding from the top of the North Island to the tip of the South Island. Originally, Laura was meant to walk the 5 month trail with her friend, but when the friend decided to drop out on day two, Laura made the decision to continue on alone.Laura is single, childfree, and is a member of the Australian Society of Travel Writers and the Adventure Travel Trade Association. She has written for numerous publications including Escape (Newscorp), NZ Herald, Australian Traveller, Geographical UK, RAC, Jetstar, Virgin, Outdoor, Wild, Great Walks, Action Diver, Active Retirees and many more. Topics that Laura & I cover are:the story of what prompted her to walk the Te Araroa trail;her decision to continue alone when her friend dropped out on Day 2;how the trek involved hiking thick forests, volcanic terrain, mountains, as well as rafting down rivers;how Laura loved the simplicity of ‘no makeup, no mirrors, no media';how although she was alone, Laura would sometimes walk with other people on the trail;how getting caught in a snow storm taught Laura that she was capable of doing it on her own;how Laura found the physical strength required for the trip more difficult than the mental strength;how the anxiety and depression that Laura was suffering from before she left, completely lifted within a couple of weeks on the trail;the transformative power of nature, and how Laura felt totally connected to the nature around her;how the trip freed up her mind and she felt a lightness of being;how her trip gave her the courage to go after her dreams of being a writer;how passion is a great compass to tell you if you're on the right track in life;Laura's book, BeWILDered, and how it was even harder than her 5 month hike;how Laura would love a partner to share her life's journey with.Check out Laura's website:https://soultrekkers.com.au/ Buy Laura's book, Bewildered:https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bewildered-Laura-Waters/dp/0369334442 Follow Laura on Instagram:@laurawaters_writer Book a FREE 30 minute coaching 'taster' session HERE: https://calendly.com/lucymeggeson/30minute Fancy getting your hands on my FREE PDF 'The Top 10 Most Irritating Questions That Single People Get Asked On The Regular...& How To (Devilishly) Respond'? Matthew is in Gisborne where a controversial East Coast barge has been cut from the Government funding list. Te Rimu Trust was spearheading a marine facility at Te Araroa which would have allowed logs, metal aggregate and other products to be transported to other coastal ports. And, Matthew takes a look behind-the-scenes look at Gisborne's fragile water supply. It relies on three dams in the backcountry, about 40km out of town, but two were hit badly by Cyclone Gabrielle. Matthew Rosenberg is a local democracy reporter based out of the Gisborne Herald's newsroom.
Thru hiker and creator of the Trans-European Alpine Route (TEAR), Dylan "RightOn" Ivens calls in from the Great White North to talk some trail with Doc. During this jam-packed episode, Doc and RightOn discuss gear, trail shaming, memorable hitches, trail math, PCT trail magic, injuries on Te Araroa, pain caves, spooking grizzlies, and the challenge of creating and hiking a 4,000-mile trail that crosses 16 countries and six mountain ranges. In 2011 a 3,000 km long walking trail was opened in New Zealand. Geoff Chapple had spent years lobbying for the creation of Te Araroa. He'd written articles in newspapers and tested out routes in the country's rugged landscape. The process of exploring where it could go sometimes put him in danger as he tells Alex Collins.
