The team included modern slavery and human trafficking and legal experts from World Vision and the ANZ bank. The bill defines modern slavery as exploititive or forced labour, forced prostitution and child labour, debt bondage or the trafficking of people. If passed into law, it would mean companies with revenue over of 50 million, have to report any exloitation risks in their international operations and supply chains, as well as declaring acutal incidents of modern slavery and what they're doing to stop it. World Vision's Rebekah Armstrong spoke to Lisa Owen.

Bringing the histories of British anti-slavery and Australian colonization together changes our view of both. Anti-Slavery and Australia: No Slavery in a Free Land? (Routledge, 2021) explores the anti-slavery movement in imperial scope, arguing that colonization in Australasia facilitated emancipation in the Caribbean, even as abolition powerfully shaped the Settler Revolution. The anti-slavery campaign was deeply entwined with the administration of the empire and its diverse peoples, as well as the radical changes demanded by industrialization and rapid social change in Britain. Abolition posed problems to which colonial expansion provided the answer, intimately linking the end of slavery to systematic colonization and Indigenous dispossession. By defining slavery in the Caribbean as the opposite of freedom, a lasting impact of abolition was to relegate other forms of oppression to lesser status, or to deny them. Through the shared concerns of abolitionists, slave-owners, and colonizers, a plastic ideology of 'free labour' was embedded within post-emancipation imperialist geopolitics, justifying the proliferation of new forms of unfree labour and defining new racial categories. The celebration of abolition has overshadowed post-emancipation continuities and transformations of slavery that continue to shape the modern world. Learn more about your ad choices. This week on The Learning Curve, co-hosts U-Arkansas Prof. Albert Cheng and Dr. Jocelyn Chadwick interview fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and the British Academy, Prof. Richard Holmes. Prof. Holmes delves into the life and literary legacy of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, one of the most significant poets of the Romantic era. Holmes offers a comprehensive overview of Coleridge's early education, highlighting how classical learning deeply influenced his worldview and writings. He also touches on Coleridge's passionate anti-slavery views within the turbulent political landscape of late 18th-century Britain, providing context for his masterpiece, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Holmes further explores Coleridge's use of symbolism, particularly the iconic albatross and the haunting ghost ship, illustrating how these elements convey the poet's themes of guilt, nature, and human destructiveness. Prof. Holmes additionally covers Coleridge's struggles with opium addiction, reflecting on how it shaped his life and creative output. Holmes also underscores Coleridge's enduring influence on British Romantic poetry and its profound impact on the American Renaissance, encouraging educators and students to continue cherishing his timeless works. In closing, Prof. Holmes reads a passage from his two-volume biography of Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Esau McCaulley (PhD, St. Andrews University) joins David Capes on the Stone Chapel Podcast to discuss his upcoming lecture at the Lanier Theological Library, October 12, 2024. His title is “The Gospels and the Anti-Slavery Movement.” Many scholars and critics of the Bible conclude that the proper reading of the Christian Scripture promotes slavery and is thus immoral. Indeed, the best cases made from the Bible during the anti-slavery movement were on the side of the slave owners and defenders. Esau McCaulley challenges that conclusion; he says the best readings of Scripture were on the side of the abolitionists. In this lecture McCaulley will show how the life and teachings of Jesus ultimately undermine one of humanity's oldest and gravest sins. Harvey from Duke University's Fuqua School of Business and the author of DeFi and the Future of Finance as they talk about the yield curve and Decentralized Finance. Harvey discusses the phenomenon of an inverted yield curve, which has predicted every recession for the last several decades. Harvey expressed his concern about the current inverted yield curve, which has been in place for 12 months, traditionally leading to a recession. Jason and Campbell also discuss the significance of an inverted yield curve and the potential of decentralized finance (defi) in the financial world. They identified problems with the current financial system and the possibility of solutions through DeFi, such as the need for an alternative to the SWIFT system for wire transfers and the ability to store and use value in transactions. With the advent of WEB 3.0 and the decentralization of monetary assets, DeFi is truly set to revolutionize the world in all economic aspects especially finance.     Follow Jason on TWITTER, INSTAGRAM & LINKEDIN Twitter.com/JasonHartmanROI Instagram.com/jasonhartman1/ Linkedin.com/in/jasonhartmaninvestor/ Call our Investment Counselors at: 1-800-HARTMAN (US) or visit: https://www.jasonhartman.com/ Free Class:  Easily get up to $250,000 in funding for real estate, business or anything else: http://JasonHartman.com/Fund CYA Protect Your Assets, Save Taxes & Estate Planning: http://JasonHartman.com/Protect Get wholesale real estate deals for investment or build a great business – Free Course: https://www.jasonhartman.com/deals Special Offer from Ron LeGrand: https://JasonHartman.com/Ron Free Mini-Book on Pandemic Investing: https://www.PandemicInvesting.com

They highlight concerns about these firms prioritizing profit over property maintenance, creating a semi-monopoly in the market. The impact stems from massive capital injections, largely sourced from public pension funds seeking high returns. Private equity's historical roots in leveraged buyouts are discussed, noting the industry's evolution and its current reliance on institutional investors. The conversation touches on rising interest rates affecting the real estate model and potential challenges for private equity firms. With 11 million potential homebuyers in this category, Jason explores the dynamics of supply and demand, debunking predictions of a looming shadow supply. He also touches on factors like low inventory, the influence of baby boomers staying in their homes, and potential wildcards like geopolitical risks affecting the housing market's trajectory. Then Jason and Bridger finish their conversation as they delve into the housing market, the economy, and financial trends, noting that millennials and Gen Z are gradually entering it, causing a housing inventory shortage. Despite rising interest rates, the market still faces low inventory levels. The conversation shifts to the potential impact on banks due to an inverted yield curve, bond values, and the housing market's reliance on new construction. They also explore the possibility of a banking crisis and discuss the Fed's role in managing interest rates. Jason concludes with insights on the strength of the U.S. dollar, the perceived threat of BRICS nations, and the inevitability of central bank digital currencies, raising concerns about financial freedom. #peterschiff #RobertKiyosaki #ShadowDemand #SupplyAndDemand #RealEstate #HousingMarket #Economy #InterestRates #Banking #USDollar #BRICS #CBDC   Follow Jason on TWITTER, INSTAGRAM & LINKEDIN Twitter.com/JasonHartmanROI Instagram.com/jasonhartman1/ Linkedin.com/in/jasonhartmaninvestor/ Call our Investment Counselors at: 1-800-HARTMAN (US) or visit: https://www.jasonhartman.com/ Free Class:  Easily get up to $250,000 in funding for real estate, business or anything else: http://JasonHartman.com/Fund CYA Protect Your Assets, Save Taxes & Estate Planning: http://JasonHartman.com/Protect Get wholesale real estate deals for investment or build a great business – Free Course: https://www.jasonhartman.com/deals Special Offer from Ron LeGrand: https://JasonHartman.com/Ron Free Mini-Book on Pandemic Investing: https://www.PandemicInvesting.com

IP addresses are a protocol used for transferring data over the Internet, while Mac addresses are for announcing traffic inside one's own network. The limitation of Mac addresses is that they can only exist inside a local area network and do not transmit to the Internet. They also discussed the philosophy of ‘packaged commodities' investment, arguing that investing in real estate with subsidized financing and tax benefits can be more profitable than investing in commodities directly. They noted the potential for increased capital flow and immigration into the US due to economic devastation and war around the world. Additionally, they advised investing in scarce resources, with a preference for those at the end product stage. Joseph expressed his long-standing optimism on residential real estate and predicted that prices would continue to rise. Jason emphasized the need to consider the housing market in a global context, noting that American real estate remains relatively affordable compared to many other countries. In this episode, Jason interviews Mike Zlotnik from the Tempo Family of Funds https://tempofunding.com/ to gain insights into the current state of the real estate market. Mike discusses the impact of high-interest rates on commercial and residential properties, particularly in the retail and office space sectors. He mentions that transaction volumes have significantly declined, with some properties being sold at a distress due to the need for immediate sales. However, multi-family apartments and self-storage properties continue to perform relatively well. Mike highlights the challenges faced by value-add projects that were acquired with bridge loans and are now reaching maturity. These assets may need to be sold at a discount if refinancing is not feasible. Additionally, he mentions the difficulty in raising cash for refinancing within syndications, as investors may not be willing to contribute more funds. Despite the challenges, Mike believes that the market may improve if interest rates stabilize or decrease.  They also discuss various economic topics, including unemployment, inflation, central planning, entitlements, and the real estate market. They touch upon the impact of technology and artificial intelligence on employment, the shortage of workers in the housing construction sector, and the shift from fix-and-flip properties to new construction properties in the real estate market. They also mention the decline in hard money loan volume for fix-and-flip projects and the need for more distressed properties in order to stimulate the market. While they have different perspectives on how these issues can be resolved, they agree that the current economic situation presents challenges and uncertainties. #realestate #marketupdate #commercialproperty #residentialproperty #transactionvolume #interestrates Key Takeaways: Jason's editorial Jason's editorial 0:27 Greetings from the beautiful Danube river 1:12 Shortage of houses affecting people and areas harder than other 2:53 We have 700 videos on our Main YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/@JasonHartmanRealEstate/videos 3:22 Itinerary for the next few weeks Mike Zlotnik interview 5:00 Welcome Mike Zlotnik; an overview of different asset classes 8:10 Transactional volume for office space is down by 75% 9:12 The residential market trend is going down 11:30 Extending or renegotiating deals 14:10 The banks and the creature form Jekyll Island 15:45 Prediction on what the FED is going to do 18:32 Commercial Mortgage Backed Securities, residential market and the overall economy 21:22 Entitlements and a giant shortage of workers especially in the housing sector 23:03 Hard money lending, the build-to-rent model and the shortage of inventory 27:57 Awesome mortgage rates equals non-distressed home sellers 30:42 Home builders are starting at such high prices 32:07 Being opportunistic in this current environment and buying build-to-rent properties   Follow Jason on TWITTER, INSTAGRAM & LINKEDIN Twitter.com/JasonHartmanROI Instagram.com/jasonhartman1/ Linkedin.com/in/jasonhartmaninvestor/ Call our Investment Counselors at: 1-800-HARTMAN (US) or visit: https://www.jasonhartman.com/ Free Class:  Easily get up to $250,000 in funding for real estate, business or anything else: http://JasonHartman.com/Fund CYA Protect Your Assets, Save Taxes & Estate Planning: http://JasonHartman.com/Protect Get wholesale real estate deals for investment or build a great business – Free Course: https://www.jasonhartman.com/deals Special Offer from Ron LeGrand: https://JasonHartman.com/Ron Free Mini-Book on Pandemic Investing: https://www.PandemicInvesting.com

Yesterday was the anniversary of the death of the great British Abolitionist Thomas Clarkson who died on September 26, 1846. In recognition and remembrance of Clarkson's monumental and tireless work to end the slave trade and slavery in the British Empire, I am re-airing my fascinating conversation with the journalist Adam Hoschchild, author of one of my favorite history books: Bury the Chains: Prophets and Rebels in the Fight to Free an Empire's Slaves. We also just listened to this episode in my class and I hope other teachers and students can benefit from it!

What does it feel like to hold that diary or broadside or sugar bowl you are writing about? In today's episode, Dr. Christina Gessler is joined by Dr. Teresa Goddu to talk about research, archives, and the book Selling Antislavery: Abolition and Mass Media in Antebellum America. Today's book is: Selling Antislavery: Abolition and Mass Media in Antebellum America (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2020), by Teresa A. Goddu, which is a richly illustrated history of the American Anti-Slavery Society and its print, material, and visual artifacts. Beginning with its establishment in the early 1830s, the American Anti-Slavery Society (AASS) recognized the need to reach a diverse and increasingly segmented audience. To do so, it produced a wide array of print, material, and visual media: almanacs and slave narratives, pincushions and gift books, broadsides and panoramas. Building on the practices of British antislavery and evangelical reform movements, the AASS used innovative business strategies to market its productions and circulate them widely. In Selling Antislavery, Teresa A. Goddu shows how the AASS operated at the forefront of a new culture industry and, by framing its media as cultural commodities, made antislavery sentiments an integral part of an emerging middle-class identity. Exploring antislavery's vast archive and explicating its messages, she emphasizes both the discursive and material aspects of antislavery's appeal, providing a richly textured history of the movement through its artifacts and the modes of circulation it put into place. Today's guest is: Teresa A. Goddu, who is Associate Professor of English and American Studies at Vanderbilt University, and serves as Faculty Head of E. Bronson Ingram College. She is a specialist in nineteenth-century American literature and culture. She is the author of Gothic America: Narrative, History, and Nation; and Selling Antislavery: Abolition and Mass Media in Antebellum America. Her work has appeared in American Literary History, Book History, Common-Place, and other venues. She is the recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and a Senior Specialist Fulbright award. Our host is: Dr. Christina Gessler, who is a freelance book editor. She has served as content director and producer of the Academic Life podcast since she launched it in 2020. The Academic Life is proud to be an academic partner of the New Books Network. In her concise history Slavery and Abolition in Pennsylvania (Temple UP, 2021), Beverly Tomek corrects the long-held notion that slavery in the North was “not so bad” as, or somehow “more humane” than, in the South due to the presence of abolitionists. While the Quaker presence focused on moral and practical opposition to bondage, slavery was ubiquitous. Nevertheless, Pennsylvania was the first state to pass an abolition law in the United States. Slavery and Abolition in Pennsylvania traces this movement from its beginning to the years immediately following the American Civil War. Discussions of the complexities of the state's antislavery movement illustrate how different groups of Pennsylvanians followed different paths in an effort to achieve their goal. Tomek also examines the backlash abolitionists and Black Americans faced. In addition, she considers the civil rights movement from the period of state reconstruction through the national reconstruction that occurred after the Civil War. While the past few decades have shed light on enslavement and slavery in the South, much of the story of northern slavery remains hidden. Slavery and Abolition in Pennsylvania tells the full and inclusive story of this history, bringing the realities of slavery, abolition, and Pennsylvania's attempt to reconstruct its post-emancipation society. Beverly C. Tomek is Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences at Monroe County Community College. She is the author of Colonization and Its Discontents: Emancipation, Emigration, and Antislavery in Antebellum Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania Hall: A "Legal Lynching" in the Shadow of the Liberty Bell, as well as the coeditor of New Directions in the Study of African American Recolonization.
