This episode originally broadcast on February 29, 2024. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/02/binary-system-podcast-400-start-from-the-beginning/ Happy 400th episode! Time flies, right? About ten years ago we started recording our Night Vale discussions because we're giant nerds and nerds gotta podcast. But here's the thing: we started with the Night Vale episode that'd just been released, "Renovations," number 48 in the series. We've discussed every episode since then, but not once have we gone back to the beginning. The same goes for Saga, Transformers, and (our current favorite thing) Lore Olympus, we started talking about them way after they'd started. That just won't do. TO THE TIME MACHINE! In addition to a deep dive into issue/episode #1 of several of our favorites, we also discussed the first episode of THIS VERY PODCAST. As well as #266 and #267 of Lore Olympus, since we can't wait even a week to discuss the latest two episodes because we're obsessed. Stick around until the end of the episode to hear more than a minute of name flubs and cats deciding to cat. This week's outro is a clip from Voyageur by Monkey Warhol. You can find Kathryn's review of the first few months of IDW's Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye here. Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? "Long-time listener, first-time guest" Amanda Slawinski's coming out journey began with a covert kiss behind a purposefully-closed door at the tender age of five...but then didn't pick up again until eighteen years later. Amanda identifies as queer, demisexual, and a "recovering Catholic," so it's no surprise that sex of any kind was NOT discussed in her family home (even the Gilmore Girls were frowned upon). Ironically, though, an unscripted moment during Catholic Mass the Sunday after marriage equality passed in New York ended up becoming a huge turning point in her life. Amanda describes having her first ever queer experience one week before the pandemic hit (timing is everything!), and shares how finding THIS VERY PODCAST during lockdown assisted her on her coming out journey! Lauren and Amanda also discuss what demisexuality means to them, and we relive the adolescent Gay Panic (TM) of worrying that your family will discover you made all your Sims gay!Follow Amanda on Instagram at @yogawithmoo, and hit her up if you're in the NYC area and are interested in yoga or meditation classes! We get our spirits lifted by disability/mental health/body positivity advocate Claire Raymond, who is A LITERAL RAY OF SUNSHINE! Claire went through so many traumatic surgeries in high school that she already had a difficult time relating to her peers; the burgeoning realization that she was queer was just one more layer of separation. But in a surprise twist, Claire found THIS VERY PODCAST! She shares her funny, beautiful journey, and makes us feel all warm and fuzzy along the way. @livingwithclaireity
In this episode I call my boss, Tom, and I tell him a joke.I've worked with Tom, on and off, for about 13 years. It's the best. Before I called to tell him a joke, Tom put a question about THIS VERY PODCAST into a prime time Australian TV show. Now that he's heard this joke I'm sure he regrets it, but it's way too late to take it back. THEM PUNX ARE BACK IN TOWN!! This is a very SPECIAL EPISODE of Cinepunx, and by “special” we mean incomplete. NOT BECAUSE OUR GUEST, TONY RETTMAN, AUTHOR AND PUNK EXPERT IS NOT AMAZING! Dude rules. No, it is ’cause our beloved Joshua Alavarez could not join us. DO NOT FRET! Friend of the show, booker, artist, and MAN ABOUT TOWN, Evan Vellela, was available to stand in. Granted, I talk a LOT so I did most of the talking, but it was still cool. Hey, we forgot to take pictures so here are some older pictures with Tony in them (Cover photo by Greg Pallante) Tony is a writer whose last three books have chronicled specific aspects of the hardcore punk scene. His latest book, STRAIGHT EDGE: A CLEAR HEADED HARDCORE PUNK HISTORY, is the first expansive oral history of the movement. Tony has previously written NYHC: NEW YORK HARDCORE 1980-1990 and Why Be Something That You’re Not: Detroit Hardcore 1979-1985 He also previously appeared on episode 49 of THIS VERY PODCAST!! Tony decided we would discuss 2017’s Girls Trip, a movie I fucking loved, so glad for that. We also spent a good deal of time discussing his new book and his process. This week's episode of HWYW features two lovely ladies who like cats a lot. KAT DENNINGS is here to lend her charm, vim, smarts, wit and general all-over appeal to the proceedings! Join the fabulous Kat as she tells Julie about the disturbing art in her mom's foyer, getting the Norovirus in France, what it's like to own a haunted piano, why her boyfriend calls her "Richard Lewis," and how THIS VERY PODCAST kept her company overseas! Also, CHIARA ATIK is here to explain what dating is! She writes about dating for HowAboutWe.com and wrote a book, and she shares with us a story about a horror date at Starbucks, a definition of the term taco-crawl, a theory about why celebrities enjoy going to SLEEP NO MORE, and whether you should text, call or email the person you're sleeping with when various circumstances arise. Plus: A premature eulogy for the Nicholson of the TV age, an out-loud musing about whether I should excercise more, a strong judgment against adventure in general, some pre-Newsroom Season 2 man-ticipation, and an introduction to a new character named Kathy. She dates online! Enjoy this episode.
