Formerly known as The Night Vale Recap, we now present The Binary System Podcast. Twins Kathryn Adams and Elizabeth Wallace bring you recaps of Welcome To Night Vale, and geek out about any shiny thing that distracts them. Episodes will drop on Thursdays
This episode originally broadcast on April 24, 2025. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2025/04/binary-system-podcast-454-black-mirror-uss-callister-into-infinity/We actually DO have a Welcome to Night Vale episode to recap...but we also watched an episode of the latest season of Black Mirror. Believe it or not this is actually what we said we were gonna do, so of course we have to post a recap right away. After a quick discussion of some not so great news (the Pope just passed away, some of his potential replacements are problematic, and Neil Gaiman needs to fire his PR manager and then GO AWAY), we get into all the details about USS Callister: Into Infinity. We were both a little worried that the sequel wouldn't live up to the first installment that came out (wow, really?) more than seven years ago. However, everyone involved did an amazing job, and the result is an episode that surprised and delighted us.Added bonus at the end, we keep forgetting how long a free Zoom meeting is, so please enjoy almost a full minute of the two of us talking to nobody as we wait for Kathryn to start the new meeting already, God. This week's outro is a clip from Images by AFTERTUNE.Correction: our friend David gave Sinners a better than fine review, he really liked it, here's his review!Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? It's really intensely weird, but it's beautiful."So like the title says, this week we're talking about Star Trek: Lower Decks, Godzilla Minus One, and the newest seasons of Black Mirror and Love Death + Robots. SOME of which we've actually watched. (Okay it's Star Trek and Godzilla. LD+R isn't out yet and we haven't psyched ourselves up to watch Black Mirror yet because DEAR LORD SO BLEAK.)Anyway, spoiler warnings for the Peanut Hamper episode of Lower Decks, because we've gotta discuss how there's not a trope left unturned in this show, and they will subvert every expectation you have. Think you know which way they'll go? Nope because BIRD PEOPLE ROBOT SEX that's why. Then we'll get into why we're looking forward to Love Death + Robots (Robert Valley mostly) and why we haven't watched Black Mirror yet (when you look at *emphatic gestures at THE WORLD* sometimes it's hard to jump in.)From there we talk about how Godzilla Minus One is possibly Nathan's second favorite Godzilla movie (and when you know how much he loves Godzilla that is SAYING SOMETHING) before discussing Wonder Woman 1984, consent in Vampire Diaries, the recent San Diego earthquake and Japanese beds that eat people. This week's outro is a clip from Sanctum by White Bat Audio. No lie, the 1998 Godzilla movie was hit or miss, but the museum trailer is SO COOL.Correction, the Black Mirror we said was kinda bleak and pointless was "Hated in the Nation," not Hated in America.Correction, the Black Mirror Elizabeth said was fine was "Demon 79."Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? Raise your hands, how many of you out there knew that Beastars Season 3 was going to be in TWO PARTS?Wow, that many of you? Okay, well we'd ask everybody to check back for updates on when the second part will be released, but we were stunned to find out that episode 12 was not in fact the end of the whole entire series, and apparently we were the last to know.Over in Night Vale, this week Cecil is appalled to learn that someone is broadcasting on Night Vale Radio's frequency (rude). Oh, and also that Leonard Burton, his former mentor who died a gruesome death years ago, was brought back to life and has been forced by the mysterious Labyrinth company to send coded messages over the radio for an upsetting amount of time. Fortunately everything should be back to normal now......hang on, where did all the doors go?This week's outro is a clip from by Stretch by Noisy Oyster. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2025/04/binary-system-podcast-450-beastars-star-trek-lower-decks-and-wondercon-2025/FIrst up this week we do a quick breakdown of WonderCon 2025, discussing everything from the amazing cosplay to low-frills motels, with some quick tangents into Cowboy Bebop (gotta love the anime rooms at Con) and Skibidi Toilet (finally saw some Skibidi merch in the wild!)After that we jump into the second-to-last episode of Beastars, and while there was a lot of forward momentum in the plot (and a ton of not very subtle homoerotic subtext) (also that was someone's tail that got cut off last episode not a penis THANK GOD) we're still not sure how they're going to pick up all the dangling threads in one episode. Finally we jump into the Deep Space Nine episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks, where Boimler beats the house at gambling, Mariner and Jennifer are adorable, and badass Tendi is badass. This week's outro is a clip from Light Fantastic by Noisy Oyster.Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? This episode originally broadcast on March 27, the original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2025/03/binary-system-podcast-450-beastars-and-star-trek-lower-decks/Episode 450! That's...kind of a milestone, right? To celebrate, let's do the same thing we've been doing for a few weeks now!First up, Beastars Season 3, episode 10. This episode merits a trigger warning, since we finally get to see what led to Legoshi's mother's death, and it's pretty heartbreaking. There's also a brief tangent where Kathryn explains why a mournful wolf howl will always hit her in the feels. After that it's the Star Trek: Lower Decks episode "Reflections". Ensign Rutherford's adventure where he has to somehow make peace with his younger, angrier self is all kinds of interesting, and triumphant, and man did they manage to make that Romulan Warbird look even more intimidating than normal. And over in the B plot, Ensign Boimler loses his temper, and God help us but it just never stops being funny. This week's outro is a clip from Dreamgirl 88 by Dirk Dehler. He's also dead! After the recap we jump into episode 9 of the final season of Beastars, where they'd like us to believe that someone got un-alived but they've pulled that stunt before, we're not buying it.Then we jump into two more episodes of Lower Decks: season 3, where even if our four main characters can't seem to stop and parse out a situation for five seconds before making a decision (you all could've had a room! Together!) we can at least agree that Dr. T'ana is just hilariously wrong and awesome.Plus some tangents into Jack Quaid's movie career, Twin Peaks music, books that color your whole travel experience, and a political rant (but that last one was totally Elizabeth's fault and she's very very sorry.)This week's outro is a clip from by Waggish by Grumplefunk. The Twin Peaks singer we were trying to think of is Julee Cruise.Correction: it's not the twenty's anniversary of House of Leaves IT'S THE TWENTY FIFTH AAAAAA.Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? This episode originally broadcast on Marcy 14, 2025. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2025/03/binary-system-podcast-448-beastars-and-star-trek-lower-decks/The episode of Beastars that we recapped this week isn't quite as unsettling as last week's episode. That civet cat is still off-putting and weird, but my goodness do the animators do an excellent job with Yaya's animation. The team that animated that zebra in the noodle shop, however, can go sit in a corner and think about what they've done.We really hope everyone has already watched Season 3 of Star Trek: Lower Decks, because we have an in-depth recap of episodes 1 and 2 with all the spoilers. For a little extra flavor, we included a discussion of "Rule of Three" and "Comfort Blanket", two podcasts which talk about the things we love and also give us fascinating information about why they work so well. Elizabeth's also reading an excellent Naomi Novik short-story collection, and Kathryn's reading another book in Seanan McGuire's Wayward Children series, a collection of lovely little children's adventures that have so much heartbreak embedded in the very fabric of the stories that she's not sure if she can keep reading them. (She's totally going to keep reading them.)This week's outro is a clip from Aqua by Ekilorea Sound.Correction: Elizabeth and Kathryn (mostly Kathryn) repeatedly mispronounce the Beastar "Yaya" as "Vaya". Sorry about that. We're also still not 100% we're getting Legoshi and Rouis's pronunciations right either.Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? And the theme is "amusement." We'd argue that the theme is also "existential dread" and "impossibly frightening." Arms inside the ride, kids, watch out for the dead animals. After that we go over this year's Oscar Nominated Animated shorts, which while not quite at the level of last year's nominations, were still very good, ranging from the bittersweet kick in the feels of In the Shadow of the Cypress, to the silly but very fun Magical Candies, to the DOWNRIGHT DISTURBING Wander to Wonder. (Which was still extremely well made but whoo boy that one's dark.)And after THAT, we've got to go over episode seven of the final season of Beastars. Well, we have to go over one scene anyway, which was hands down the most disturbing thing this show's done YES THAT SCENE THE ONE WITH THE RABBITS WHAT THE ABSOLUTE HELL.This week's outro is a clip from bROKEn dREAM by hARITON zOELooking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? "Thank you!" "It's best to not ask questions. Especially good ones."If the title to the Welcome to Night Vale episode sounds familiar, we're seeing the return of a harrowing duo from Night Vale's past: The Man Who Is Not Tall, and The Man Who Is Not Short. And unfortunately The Man Who Is Not Tall is now...Steve Carlsburg. Yes, Cecil's beloved brother-in-law has taken on a dangerous new job, and Cecil has questions. After a recap were we discuss the rules of childhood games that scared the crap out of us, and also Cecil bemoaning the loss of decorum (I mean, Cloud Perverts? Really?), the Binary Podcast System team also talk about Season 3 Episode 7 of Beastars (which Kathryn hasn't seen), and the 2025 Oscar-Nominated Animated Shorts (which Elizabeth hasn't seen), and then take a brief digression to talk about The Menu, which we've both seen and talked about it at length already but come on, it just dropped on Netflix and how can we resist? This week's outro is a clip from CARAVAGGIO by hARITON zOE You can listen to our episodes about The Menu and the 2024 Oscar-Nominated Animated Shorts, we promise we didn't rehash too much about what we loved from those in today's episode.Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? This episode originally broadcast on February 13, 2025. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2025/02/binary-system-podcast-445-arcane-series-finale/It took two, maybe two-and-a-half months longer than everyone else, but the Binary System Podcast team finally watched the final episode (ever?) of Arcane: League of Legends.Ten out of ten. No notes.Of course it takes us an entire episode to go into detail about why we think this episode was the perfect way to wrap up a series that's beautiful, powerful, exciting, beautiful, heartbreaking, and have we mentioned beautiful? You'll probably want to watch the finale before listening to this episode, partly because you really need to experience this series, but also because we spoil the hell out of all of it.This week's outro is a clip from Shadows by Beat Mekanik. (Otherwise known as corporate takeover.) Totally understandable that they'd want to cut loose for a bit, and what's a little grave robbing among friends? After that we go over two more episodes of Beastars that were equal parts harrowing and freaking bizarre (oh my god the bit with poop, c'mon you guys why you gotta be THAT weird?) and everything we loved about the season 2 finale of Star Trek Lower Decks: dramatic rescue missions! The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2025/01/binary-system-podcast-443-arcane-star-trek-lower-decks-and-bojack-horseman/ Wow, we've got a real rhythm going with these posts! We're back again this week to discuss the second-to-last episode (ever!) of Arcane. What can we say about this show that we haven't said before? It's beautiful, it's terrifying, it's powerful, it's violent. We finally get the backstory on what's been happening with Mel, but we still don't have a handle on exactly what she is now, or how her mother's been lying this entire time. (SPOILERS!) Oh, and Vi and Caitlyn have sex. Finally! We're also still talking about Bojack Horseman, this time about the nature of apologies and how they don't, by themselves, actually fix anything. But first we have to get to Star Trek: Lower Decks, specifically Season 2 episode 9, which has instantly become Kathryn's favorite episode. We get to see the lower decks crew of not one, not even three, but five different spaceships, in an episode that isn't afraid to ask "What does the awkward, eager-beaver, go-getter ensign look like when they're in a crew of Vulcans? Or Klingons?" This week's outro is a clip from Battle Glitch Bot by TeknoAXE. We didn't get the pronunciation right, but the Japanese artform that involves fixing pottery with gold is called Kintsugi. Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2025/01/binary-system-podcast-442-star-trek-lower-decks-beastars-and-bojack-horseman/ Second verse, same as the first: we're back this week to talk about Star Trek: Lower Decks (the Star Trek future is the best future: good hearted and occasionally sexy!) and Beastars (okay but WHY did Louis say he was a virgin, does having sex with Haru not count? Did they actually HAVE sex?), and fangirling about the 1980s cartoon Mighty Orbots (yes it's often silly but we love it and despite the shortcuts the animation is surprisingly good) We finish up with Elizabeth's rewatch of Bojack Horseman, and the downright scary similarity between his public “apology” and Neil Gaiman's response to the allegations against him. I mean, the episode is five years old and it's like Neil was taking notes… Keep an eye out here for Kathryn's upcoming crossover with the Mid-Life Crisis Task Force! Kathryn watched Season 2 Episode 6 of Star Trek: Lower Decks (foley artists, take a bow), and Elizabeth and Kathryn both watched Season 3 Episode 3 of Beastars (“Shit gets weird.”) But what we really want to talk about is Season 2 Episode 7 of Arcane. We're on the third-to-the-last episode ever, and this one is a tale of both time-travel and alternate reality. It's beautiful, terrifying, and bittersweet in the best way. The writers keep showing us the hidden depths of the characters and the meaning of Hextech itself, the animation keeps knocking our socks off, and the heartbreak that the showrunners promised to deliver is still arriving, but in ways we never quite expect. This episode originally broadcast on January 10, 2025. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2025/01/binary-system-podcast-440-beastars-and-star-trek-lower-decks/ Wonder of all wonders we actually managed to watch another episode of Beastars season 3. Never mind the fact that Elizabeth only finished watching it five minutes before the recording, it got done and that's what counts. (Keep telling yourself that, slacker. ~ Kathryn) (Oy! ~ Elizabeth) After recapping the various Beastars heartbreaks (poor Juno just can't catch a break) we get into 4th and 5th episodes of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2, because that series never stops being delightful. We also have a brief word about Tenet (Elizabeth doesn't understand most of it, but she really liked it) and some tangents into Bojack Horseman and the apparently dreadful Megalopolis. This episode originally broadcast on January 2, 2025, the original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2025/01/binary-system-podcast-439-wtnv-260-the-december-monologues/ Happy New Year everyone! Hope everyone's 2025 is already shaping up to be calm and stress-free and completely absent of any kind of drama. This week's recap is actually way late, but we've got to get through a whole month of Welcome To Night Vale being on hiatus, so why not wait until January to cover a story with December in the title? The three monologues this year feature a decent cross-section of Night Vale. The Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives In Your Home talks about the best way to handle a bullying situation, ie: LISTEN TO YOUR CHILD. Or have a ghostly apparition remove the teeth from the bullies while they sleep. Your choice. Meanwhile Michelle Nguyen has a surprisingly insightful argument for why you should only listen to your favorite song once. And Steve Carlsburg is having the weirdest job interview. (Did...did we know that Steve did time for robbing the bank where he currently works? Because it's pretty clear that his bank doesn't know that.) After the recap we continue our trend of actually watching things. No, not Beastars yet. And not the last three episodes of Arcane. Elizabeth finished watching the surprisingly violent Blue Eye Samurai. Kathryn finished watching the surprisingly free Epic: The Musical. And Elizabeth has juuust about finished watching the all-around surprising Christopher Nolan's Tenet. And we liked all of it. (Well, Elizabeth hasn't seen the ending of Tenet just yet. But liking a movie she still needs to watch feels pretty darn appropriate for this film, doesn't it?) This week's outro is a clip from A Simple Glitch by TeknoAXE You can find Jorge Rivera-Herrans youtube channel with all the different Epic: The Musical sagas here, or if you want you can skip right to the watch party where he plays the entire musical here. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/12/binary-system-podcast-438-holiday-travel-edition/ Hope everybody is having safe and happy holidays! This week's episode is super short because one: at time of recording we were on the road, and two: we haven't caught up with much In the way of TV, movie, and books this week. Elizabeth's only finished the second to last episode of Star Trek Lower Decks, most of Blue Eye Samurai, and the Beetlejuice sequel, and Kathryn's in the middle of Valente's Space Oddity. So, yeah, uh, kind of a lot actually? More on that next week! This week's outro is a clip from Auld Lang Syne ( Synth Wave ) by HoliznaCC0. Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/12/binary-system-podcast-437-arcane-season-two-beastars-season-3-episode-1/ Happy Holidays from the Binary System Podcast team! Our present to everyone this year is an extra-long episode, because there is just so much content. The final season of Beastars dropped while we were looking the other way, so we have to talk about the first episode and how this season seems to be tackling some really serious themes, like how segregation may only provide temporary peace while making everything worse in the long term. But what's taking up most of our time this week is the second arc of the final season of Arcane: League of Legends. There's moments of humor and strategically-placed slo-mo, betrayal, loyalty, and an almost relentless stream of heartbreak. And despite how tragic things get we're gonna keep on watching because you guys? It's so pretty! One day we will stop using spinningmerkaba's Christmas On Mars as the outro at Christmas, but today is not...oh who are we kidding, we're never gonna stop using this. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/12/binary-system-podcast-436-wtnv-259-chrysalis-and-star-trek-lower-decks/ "…the chrysalis is showing signs that it may soon open…" It's Night Vale, so that could either mean Steve Carlsberg leaving his old life for a new one, or it could be the VERY LITERAL chrysalis with a monster inside. Obviously, it's both, but between the thing in the cocoon and Steve's employers, maybe we should go stand somewhere else. After the recap we jump into Star Trek: Lower Decks and discuss one of our favorite characters, Dr. T'Ana, possibly the least sexy cat-person Star Trek has ever produced. We love her. We also take a moment to talk about the January return of Severance, television schedules in the UK, being nice to cashiers, and then ask the important question: why DID they make Gladiator II? The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/11/binary-system-podcast-435-arcane-season-two-episode-3/ The first arc of Arcane Season 2 wraps up with a glorious one-on-one battle between Vi and Jinx (well, one-one-one, if you don't count Caitlyn and Sevika fighting it out in the wings, and the Orphan Moppet who's latched on to Jinx just generally getting in the way.) Many things are happening simultaneously in this episode, what with Jayce and Co trying to figure out how to deal with magic that seems to becoming sentient, and Ambessa pulling strings and dragging Piltover into war with the Undercity. It's a lot to keep track of, so be prepared for spoilers and a lot of breathless summaries of the very cool things happening, followed by "but before that happens...". Oh, and Vi and Caitlyn's relationship has managed to go exactly where we wanted it to, right before breaking our hearts. This week's outro is a clip from Cadence Cascade by Denys Brodovski. Those are perfectly acceptable, go talk to the demons in the booth by the fuzzy blankets. After the recap we jump into Season 2 Episode 2 of Arcane, which is just as beautiful as ever and features a fight scene that is completely bonkers. Seriously, it's ridiculously over the top. We loved it. Finally Kathryn gives us the breakdown of Time Travel Travellers' Weekend at the Carolina Renaissance Festival, which could only be improved by one thing: those Scottish Meat Pies we got at a Medieval Fair (*censored*) years ago and still remember. Listener recipes cheerfully accepted. And on an unrelated note: Why DO people hate Imagine Dragons? This week's outro is a clip from Twin Gods by White Bat Audio, find more at karlcasey.bandcamp.com. This episode originally broadcast on November 14, 2024. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/11/binary-system-podcast-433-arcane-season-two/ This week the Binary System Podcast team watched the first episode of Arcane: League of Legends season 2. That's it, that's all you need to know; we watched it and it's amazing. Okay, yes, we also talked a little bit about what we're also watching (Dario Argento and the original run of Frasier) and what we're doing (going to Durham Comic Con and making lots of dragon-themed artwork). But really, this week's episode is mostly about Arcane. We're bummed about who we lost in last season's finale, pleasantly surprised by who didn't get killed in Jinx's attack, and looking forward to enjoying more fantastic animation and most likely getting our freaking hearts broken This week's outro is a clip from Sleepless Beast by Jangwa You can follow along with the DragonFall Drawing Challenge by going to Elizabeth or Kathryn's instagram feeds. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/11/binary-system-podcast-432-wtnv-257-traffic-2005s-constantine-and-lower-decks/ On this week's Night Vale recap we're taking about the brand new innovation the venture capitalists have come up with: a ride share where a bunch of people take the same big car, and it goes around to different places and some people get on and some get off (...the bus, they've reinvented the bus. But it's Night Vale so there's also weird non-government agents, blindfolds, and either an angry mob or a pickup game, we're not sure.) After that Elizabeth sets a record in movie-watching, she finally got around to watching Keanu Reeve's Constantine, only 19 years late! She's kicking herself for not watching it sooner because it's all kinds of fun. Spoiler warnings, but chances are most of you have already watched it at some point in the last two decades. Finally, Kathryn's on season two of Star Trek: Lower Decks, just in time for the final season to drop, so we've got to talk about how good the show is and how maybe it's okay that it's coming to an end if it means it ends on a high note. Here's hoping. This week's outro is a clip from Covered in Oil by Broke For Free. (Not the first time we've used this one, but it's one of our favorites so it gets a repeat.) This episode originally broadcast on October 31, 2024. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/10/binary-system-podcast-431-the-exorcist-iii/ Happy Halloween! We're officially in the middle of spooky movie season, so this week we're talking about a classic horror film. It's the Exorcist...Three! Not a perfect film by any means; you can see the heavy hand of the producers who insisted on changing the name from William Blatty's Legion in order to capitalize on the Exorcist name, and then had to shoehorn in an exorcism at the end that makes no logical sense. However, the movie is surprisingly...good? With an interestingly creepy plot, some surprising comedic moments, a couple of good jump scares, and excellent performances by George C. Scott, Ed Flanders, and Brad Dourif (Dourif in particular is not to be missed), this is a fun little experience that's definitely going to be added to our list of Horror Movies We Actually Like. We also ran across some news about the third season of Good Omens, and then Kathryn wanted to talk about having finally seen the original Japanese Ringu, which led to a discussion of all the ways we still love The Ring. Spoilers aplenty for two movies that are more than a couple of decades old. This week's outro is a clip from Pixel Pumpkin by TeknoAXE. Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? It's a lovely selection of Weird Things (that's writer Brie Williams' specialty) and it'd be sweet if it wasn't for the human sacrifices. What definitely isn't sweet is the final episode of the final (...so far...) season of Mayor of Kingstown. Giant spoiler warnings, because we go through this episode in detail, discussing how dumb Ian is for getting buddy-buddy with a serial killer, how Evelyn is going to get herself killed, how Robert went from our favorite character to "holy cow he's going off the rails and it's ANNOYING," and how much the ending was a total bummer. Not a BAD ending you understand, just not one that's going to make you feel very good. This week's outro is a clip from Remember to Hope by Geb. This episode originally broadcast on October 17, 2024. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/10/binary-system-podcast-429-return-of-the-sit-rep-take-two/ We didn't actually plan to do a second sit-rep episode so soon. Unfortunately another gigantic event hit the US in the last week, causing a lot of uproar and basically making everyone's lives harder. That's right, Netflix cancelled KAOS after only one season. It's an unacceptable state of affairs and we demand to speak with the manager! All kidding aside, Florida was hit by the second hurricane in the space of two weeks, which is exactly two hurricanes too many. Our parents and younger sister Hannah fared pretty well with no major damages - our parents lost power but it just got turned back on yesterday - but not everyone got so lucky, so we're leaving up all of the charity links from the last sit-rep episode. In addition to ranting about KAOS, this is also an episode about finales, because Kathryn finished season 1 of Star Trek: Lower Decks and the final episode ever of The Crown. And also the second-to-last episode of Mayor of Kingstown, hopefully of season 3 and not the second-to-last episode ever. You hear us, Paramount? You're on thin ice with all the commercials you run on your paid streaming service, so we better get a season 4 or we're gonna pen a strongly-worded letter to your supervisor. This week's outro is a clip from Dark and Suspenseful Atmosphere by Universfield. The World Central Kitchen is providing meals and water to people affected by Hurricane Helene in Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. The Organized Fishermen of Florida is collecting donations for victims of Hurricane Helene. The American Red Cross is collecting donations for Hurricane Helene relief. This Facebook post has a lot of information about two locations in Asheville NC that are accepting supplies, and what types of donations they need. Ooo and cider! As soon as we escaped the rusty chainsaws and applied corn-silk tourniquets (seriously you guys that episode was DARK) we go into more cheerful stuff like Star Trek: Lower Decks, Mayor of Kingstown, and Killing Eve. Okay, those last two are also super dark. And finally, Kathryn and Nathan watched the first episode of Kaos and really enjoyed it, not realizing that by the time this episode dropped the information would be obsolete because NETFLIX FREAKING CANCELLED IT. This episode originally broadcast on October 3, 2024. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/10/binary-system-podcast-427-return-of-the-sit-rep/ The next Night Vale episode didn't drop early enough for us to do a recap this week, and there's been enough stuff going on that we figured it was a good time to bring back the Sit Rep (With Beers!) The good news is that Elizabeth is newly-employed and feeling very relieved and grateful (unemployment is scary). The bad news is that the coast of Florida has been beaten up by a hurricane YET AGAIN, with the added bonus of western North Carolina being UNDERWATER. Our hearts go out to everyone dealing with this disaster; we're gonna post links below to some charities you can donate to if you want, because the clean-up from Hurricane Helene is going to take a while. In lighter news, we're also still catching up on Star Trek: Lower Decks and Mayor of Kingstown. And since it's officially the start of Spooky Movie Season, we're accepting suggestions for horror movies to watch. Gore is not a dealbreaker (but try not to go nuts), jump-scares are always welcome, and weird creepiness is mandatory. This week's outro is a clip from Midnight Stomp by TeknoAXE The World Central Kitchen is providing meals and water to people affected by Hurricane Helene in Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/09/binary-system-podcast-426-the-crown-kaos-time-bandits-better-call-saul-and-star-trek-lower-decks/ This week's episode features the triumphant return of special guest Hannah Wallace, as she and the East Coast branch of the podcast fight their way through the wilds of Gatlinburg. (But really, they saw a bear and everything!) As they fill in Elizabeth on their adventures, everybody gets a chance to talk about what we've all been watching lately, and there's an actual theme: shows you can enjoy even if you don't know the story behind it. The Crown works even if you didn't keep up with the royal family; Kaos works even if you don't know Greek mythology; the new Time Bandits works even if you don't know historic events; Better Call Saul works even if you didn't watch Breaking Bad; and Star Trek Lower Decks works even if you were never a Trekkie. But all these shows work even better if you DO know some stuff behind it, which is why making a monument to Miles O'Brien is freaking hilarious. Spoilers for everything, especially Kaos: Elizabeth figures it's better to spend a season wondering WHEN something bad is going to happen, than spend the season wondering IF something bad is going to happen. This episode originally broadcast on September 19, 2024. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/09/binary-system-podcast-425-wtnv-254-the-triangle/ Alejandra Nuñez, Ronnie Sharma, and Nanako Barnes of Mr. Prescott's 5th Period AP English Class - the protectors of Night Vale otherwise known as the Library Tweens - have decided that they DON'T want to be known as the Library Tweens anymore. They need a new name, something with a little more staying power. This is gonna take some market research, focus groups, and a lot of social media posting. Which means they don't really have time to, y'know, do any protecting while this is going on. Town being terrorized by spectral cattle rustlers stealing everyone's cows? You're on your own. After the recap, the Binary System Podcast team continues to dazzle the world by catching up on things. Elizabeth's finished the final episode of The Umbrella Academy, Kathryn's almost midway through season 3 of Mayor of Kingstown, and they're both watching (and enjoying the heck out of) more Star Trek: Lower Decks. And that's quite an accomplishment considering - as you can tell from this episode - they have trouble with counting things. And remembering names. And trying to frikkin pronounce words correctly. Anyone else have trouble with the world "rustlers"? Just me? Okay then. This week's outro is a clip from My Hover Car by TeknoAXE. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/09/binary-system-podcast-424-lower-decks-mayor-of-kingstown-kaos-and-somewhat-careless-snake-people/ Okay in some respects it's just business as usual around here: Kathryn and Elizabeth have both been watching season 1 of Star Trek: Lower Decks, four years after it first came out, that tracks. But Kathryn just watched the first episode of Mayor of Kingstown season 3, only three months late, what the heck? And Elizabeth just watched two episodes of Kaos and that's not even three weeks old, WHAT'S HAPPENING WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE CONSUMING CONTENT IN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME? Ahem. We like all of those things, of course, and we also discuss heatwaves, restarting your Netflix account, ridiculously charming smiles, and certain people who got in the news for getting snake bit. (We hope the guy recovers, but man alive that really was the shortest line between Fuck Around and Find Out.) But we do start the episode with the news of James Earl Jones' passing. RIP, James, we hope you know how happy you made all us nerds every time we saw you. This week's outro is a clip from Snake Charmer by Synapsis. Correction: Kathryn says the revelation about Ensign Mariner at the end of Lower Decks season one was surprising. She meant at the end of episode one. (There's a pretty fun reveal at the end of season one too but we won't get into that now...) Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? Due to travel delays, lack of any Lore Olympus updates (mournful sigh), and time (and scheduling) just generally being weird, we're doing two Welcome To Night Vale recap episodes in a row! This week we're getting crafty, so prepare your sunniest room (no windows allowed), grab your best implement (stolen is preferred) and your sharpest table, and let's get to folding! You'll notice we didn't say to grab any paper. Things will be folded in this episode, but they're definitely not paper. (Evil laugh.) After the recap of an episode with some delightfully disturbing images, we talked about the things that we're actually catching up on. Elizabeth's almost finished watching the final season of The Umbrella Academy, and Kathryn's watched four episodes of the final season of The Crown. And their thoughts about both of these are surprisingly similar: excellent shows that are still enjoyable to watch but which have a few glaring flaws that really could have been avoided. Also, Kathryn really recommends the movie "Licorice Pizza", and Elizabeth is enjoying the heck out of "Star Trek: Lower Decks", so you've all got your TV and movie assignments now, hop to. But we assumed she'd be hawking several things, instead of just two: a spray that may or may not repel Librarians, and a teleporter that may or not make people explode. Supplies are limited, order today, satisfaction most definitely NOT guaranteed. After that we jump into an in-depth and VERY SPOILERIFFIC recap of the final episode of Poker Face season 1, which had everything we wanted: plot twists, stunt casting, bridal shower escapes, and penis rings. (Not like THAT.) Finally we wrap up with a quick mention of the first few episodes of the final season of Umbrella Academy (Netflix Bloat has already set in, also dear lord the barfing scene in episode two) and some complaints about streaming services (if we want to just pay for one episode you should let us so PLEASE TAKE OUR FREAKING MONEY.) This week's outro is a clip from A Crime in Progress by John Bartmann. Correction: Poker Face season 2 has been confirmed. It was confirmed in February. February 2023. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/08/binary-system-podcast-421-mayor-of-kingstown-season-2-and-poker-face/ The Binary System Podcast team appears to be on a bit of a roll lately. Just this week Kathryn finished season 2 of Mayor of Kingstown, and both Kathryn and Elizabeth have watched all but the last episode of Poker Face. That's two TV series where we're now less than a year and a half behind! We've got a lot of thoughts on Mayor of Kingstown: the things we liked (impressive as hell gun battles), things we didn't (cartoonishly evil bad guys, and Dianne Wiest is a shining star who's talents are tragically underused after the first season), and some musings about how messed-up it is that the words "profit" and "prisons" appear anywhere near each other in the same organization. To lighten things up, we go into an in-depth recap of episode 9 of Poker Face. There was a lot more peril in this episode, and we avoided spoilers so y'all can go watch it for yourself because the twists are fun as hell and it is so nice to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt in something. On a final note: people who never tip the waitstaff and delivery drivers are great big jerks. That is all. Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em.) Night Vale has come up with this amazing “ride share” program, and it even has driverless cars! Of course, the ride doesn't take you anywhere near where you wanted to go, and the cars are only “driverless” because ghosts don't count. Or do they? Doors are locked for your safety, please stop screaming. After the recap, you're not gonna believe this: we finally watched 2017's Logan. It was exactly as dark, violent, and depressing as we'd been told. We loved it. (Content warning for, oh, death, gore, senility, and getting kicked in the heart, literally and figuratively.) Finally, Elizabeth has a brief word about Deadpool & Wolverine (it's super fun you guys, see it in the theater if you can) and we almost ended the podcast on a depressing note (…Neil Gaiman, ugh…) but brought it back around with an episode of Poker Face. (“Exit Stage Death” is brilliant, no notes.) This week's outro is a clip from Inspiring and Energetic by UNIVERSFIELD. Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/08/binary-system-podcast-419-sdcc-2024-and-galaxycon-2024-convention-round-up/ The gigantic, internationally-known event has wrapped up, with thousands of people having attended, and the whole world's talking about the big reveals and celebrity appearances. That's right, GalaxyCon 2024 in Raleigh North Carolina was a blast. In all seriousness, while the East Coast branch of Binary System Podcast was going to GalaxyCon, the West Coast branch of BSP was attending San Diego Comic-Con. We've got lots of photos of fabulous cosplay, tips for a fun convention experience (the "Activations" are not worth it, you have been warned), some concerns about the latest MCU casting (Kathryn is worried that Robert Downey Jr. may secretly be sick of yet another MCU acting job; Elizabeth shares the concern, but also feels that since he's getting a dump truck full of cash for the gig he's probably fine), some hopes for the future of the multiverse franchise (maybe we could get another Loki appearance? Maybe there's a universe where Clintasha is actually a thing??!!), and a few feel-good stories about how awesome everyone was at both conventions. In more surprising news, we actually found some time during all this convention madness to watch a few more episodes of Poker Face and Mayor of Kingstown. Elizabeth also finally finished watching the entire Star Trek: Discovery series, and she's got an in-depth review. It was fine. This week's outro is a clip from Conceited by Beat Mekanik. No, we're absolutely horrible at TV and movies, which is why this week we're catching up on Poker Face episode one, which only came out a year and a half ago. Before you congratulate us, you should know Kathryn's finally watching 2023's Mayor of Kingstown season 2 and Elizabeth finally watched 2014's The Grand Budapest Hotel. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/07/binary-system-podcast-417-we-watched-john-wick-yes-the-first-one/ In the latest installment of our ongoing series "We're Bad At Movies But We Have A Lot Of Enthusiasm", this week we decided to finally watch the 2014 movie John Wick. And we loved it. It's an absolute symphony of beautifully-choreographed violence that takes the ridiculously improbable storyline of "Terrifying former hitman goes on a cross-city murderous rampage to avenge his dog" and makes it work. Listen in as we sqeee about everything we loved about this movie, including a lot of elements we didn't realize before now that we loved: fixers, unflappable crime doctors, glamorous hotels that are exclusive to dangerous rich criminals, and Ian McShane. We're also still catching up on the second and third seasons of Mayor of Kingstown, but they're not quite meeting the high bar set by Season One, so we may have to switch over to watching the next three movies in the John Wick series. I don't know if you knew this, but apparently they're very good. This week's outro is a clip from The Final Catdown (radio edit) by REDCVT Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? This episode originally broadcast on July 4, 2024. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/07/binary-system-podcast-416-light-speed-travel-edition/ Happy 4th of July! Or if you don't celebrate that, happy Thursday. It's time once again for a super quick Travel Edition because we're so busy being crazy jet setters! Either that or we're all celebrating our Mom's birthday and we lost track of time and had to record at the last minute. YOU DECIDE. Anyway, we had time to talk about a great bar (Revival 1869 in Clayton NC), a great graphic novel (Lazarus volume 2) and a great sequel idea (The Night Manager season 2. Wait, we're actually a bit nervous about that one. We'll call it a "cautiously optimistic" idea.) This week's outro is a clip from Intensity by Beat Mekanik. Episode originally broadcast on June 20, 2024. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/06/binary-system-podcast-415-wtnv-250-father-kevin/ It's a short recap this week, since the action for the latest episode episode of Welcome to Night Vale can basically be summed up with "And then there was a battle." We get a weird glimpse into the past (future?) of Kevin from Desert Bluffs, the Library Tweens need to, well, not learn to respect their elders so much as stop treating anyone over twenty as "elder", and Cecil has an awesome distraction, which we failed to mention includes the radio broadcast of the crash of the Hindenburg and the Indiana Jones theme. But mostly it's the battle, and we're still not one hundred percent sure what exactly happened. In a related note, this marks the twelve year anniversary of Welcome To Night Vale. Can you believe it? Twelve years of us obsessing over this weird little desert town. We're gonna go celebrate by raising a glass and...watching more Mayor of Kingstown. Because we're officially obsessed with that too. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/06/binary-system-podcast-414-wtnv-249-rifts-and-mayor-of-kingstown/ Mother Lauren is sponsoring a citywide cleansing of Night Vale and yes that's exactly as scary as it sounds. Self care is still important, so don't forget to check into the Maximum Security Spa for a few hours. Or days. Years? Whatever, the good word of the day is TEETH. After the recap, Kathryn just watched the third episode of the first season of Mayor of Kingstown, which she says has "a yikes of a beginning" and a giant downer of an ending. Elizabeth says it's a shame that the third season so far isn't as good as the first, but it's a little better than the second. Finally, we wrap up with the most recent Transformers graphic novel, some Hugo-nominated short stories, and one last Lore Olympus discussion (....at least until Rachel Smythe gives us some new content. Pretty please Rachel can we have some new content?) This week's outro is a clip from It's All Coming Together by Mystery Mammal. This is where you can find sci-fi and fantasy short stories for free. Originally broadcast on June 6, 2024, the original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/06/binary-system-podcast-413-lore-olympus-episode-280-series-finale/ The wildly popular webcomic Lore Olympus wraps up with episode 280! We were a little worried that there were so many unresolved plot threads left for the final episode, but Rachel Smythe managed to tie everything together in a pretty little bow. No spoilers, but if you have any questions about how it all ended for anyone in the story, the answer is pretty much the same: they're fine. The couple that you haven't seen for months? They're fine. That one character you really liked? They're fine. Yes and that other one too. They're fine. Apollo isn't fine, but that's a good thing. Zeus is more "okay I guess" than fine. But everyone else has nothing to complain about. Of course, being who we are, we found a few tiny things to complain about: the occasional wonky expression in the artwork, some big confrontations that we never got to see (and now never will). But for the most part we've adored every part of this delightful little webcomic and all the talent and effort that went into making it for the last (wow) six years! So now only one question remains: what the heck are we going to recap now? Fortunately there are still plenty of things in the nerdsphere for us to obsess over, so after the recap we talked a little about Skibidi Toilet (yes, we're still watching it), some complaints about Mayor of Kingstown getting thrown behind a paywall (curse you, Amazon Prime), and Elizabeth's watching the final season of Picard, which led to a discussion of a few Star Trek storylines that the writers created and then dropped like they were on fire. Correction: Turns out the big celebration of Persephone's worshippers WAS when she went back to the Underworld every year. Hat tip to the Lore Olympians instagram page for so many years of historical tidbits. This week's outro is a clip from March on Megopolis by TeknoAXE. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/05/binary-system-podcast-412-wtnv-248-mother-lauren-and-mayor-of-kingstown/ There is nothing wrong with your radio, Night Vale, do not attempt to adjust the dial. Mother Lauren is controlling the transmission. And she is pissed. This week's Night Vale recap features nightmare images of a clawed monster Freddy Kruegering her way down the street, but also asks the age-old question: is a hot dog a pizza? (Kathryn and Elizabeth disagree about it being a sandwich, but they definitely know it's not a taco.) After the recap they have a spoileriffic look at the first two episodes of Mayor of Kingstown (we love how Jeremy Renner short circuits potential story arcs by just punching someone) with tangents into Furiosa hype and how if a movie doesn't make Marvel money it's considered "a flop." Finally, Elizabeth almost missed the recording because she took a nap after a Memorial Day party and woke up to messages from at least four different people going "WHY AREN'T YOU ANSWERING YOUR PHONE ARE YOU DEAD" and she's really sorry she worried everybody, but she's also weirdly relieved, because if you live by yourself sometimes you wonder "...if I fell down and hurt myself and couldn't get to the phone, how long would I lie there before someone came to check on me?" Well, if you're missing a podcast recording, it's 43 minutes. This week's outro is a clip from Encryption by Beat Mekanik. Here's links to both Hugh and David Leninhawk's reviews of Furiosa (they both agreed there were some CGI issues.) The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/05/binary-system-podcast-411-lore-olympus-episode-278-and-279/ Only three episodes left of Lore Olympus, and there is a lot going on. We're not sure how many of the unresolved plot threads are gonna get wrapped up in the series finale (Eros and Psyche? Zeus's millennia of betrayal? Leto finally getting her comeuppance?), but in the two episodes we're recapping this week we can promise the return of a few long-lost characters, a fantastic appearance by some moon-goddesses, and Apollo getting the beat-down of his life. Elizabeth's also watched most of the first season of the Jeremy Renner series Mayor of Kingstown and she can highly recommend it. Kathryn hasn't seen anything new lately, but she did rewatch Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse, and can confirm that it really does hold up. First up is a lightning quick recap of Night Vale as Cecil revisits a very strange kids show and correctly answers the daily puzzle. (It's entropy. The answer is always entropy.) After that we also do a quick update on what promises to be a VERY LONG process as we put together the Flametoys Windblade model. ("Easy for beginners?" The hell you say.) So, way back on August 2, 2018 the 24th episode of Lore Olympus was released. Apollo let himself into Persephone's bedroom and what happened next set in motion a series of events that changed the story forever and made a lot of people very angry. Almost six years later, episodes 276 and 277 are the culmination of all these event and WE HAVE SOME THOUGHTS. After that we very briefly talk about Avatar: the Way of Water, because Elizabeth finally watched it and she definitely doesn't think it's worth mentioning. (James Cameron: please find an editor who's strong enough to cut three plot lines and a half dozen characters, thank you.) This week's outro is a clip from Dancing Mr. Mime by Maarten Schellekens. This episode originally broadcast on April 25, 2024. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/04/binary-system-podcast-408-lore-olympus-episode-274-and-275/ The Lore Olympus comic tackles a lot of issues about abuse: spousal, parental, generational. The latest two episodes are no exception, but they also don't really need trigger warnings because the focus here is the response to that abuse. Rachel Smythe gives a balanced look at how abuse victims can overcome the feeling of guilt at something that was never their fault, and how refusing to take the high road and forgive the abuser is exactly as valid a response as forgiving in order to move on. It's also a brutal smackdown, with the titan Kronos starting to get everything that's coming to him, and it's glorious. Listen in as we squeeee once again in the countdown to the final episodes of Lore Olympus. We also go on a few tangents about YouYube metrics, the nightmare process of getting a comic book adapted to a cartoon, and also movie and TV producers deciding to cancel things for no reason, which is an odd thing for us to get angry about since neither of us seem to have the energy to start even one more series, so why are we all fired up to have even more to catch up on? Some of it is unfair (it's not Cecil's fault that Abby had to be the de facto parent because their actual parents sucked) but some of it is valid (let's face it, Cecil was horrible to Abby's husband Steve, on the radio, for years, and still hasn't apologized) and all of this comes bubbling out while she's telling Cecil the story of their absent father. AGAIN. All this is to say, Abby went from generic, faceless, "Janice's Mom" to a fully fleshed out character in the space of one episode, and everyone involved should take a bow. After that, Elizabeth finally saw Dune Part Two, so we spend the last half of the episode fawning over Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, the effects, the music, and those weird-ass fireworks on Giedi Prime because they were so cool. Heads up: between Elizabeth's phone blowing up mid-recording, the usual traffic sounds, and Kathryn's computer fan cosplaying as a jet engine, it's a bit of a noisy episode this week. This week's outro is a clip from schneesturm by voide. Correction: Kathryn said Steve was bullying him on his radio show. She meant Cecil. EDIT: friend of the podcast David Leninhawk confirmed the Dune Part Three Teaser Trailer is indeed a fake, but that Dune Messiah has been greenlit. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/04/binary-system-podcast-406-lore-olympus-episode-272-and-273/ You know how we've mentioned for a while that Rachel can be very, let's say, judicious, with her plot reveals? Some of the commenters have been complaining that it can take quite a long time for anything to happen in the Lore Olympus comic. Hopefully everyone's happier now, because a lot happened in the most recent two episodes. I mean a lot, holy cow. Spoiler warnings all over the shop, especially for this week's Fast Pass episode, because these episodes are extra long, and we've gotten a ton of new information. We finally know what happened to Persephone's powers, Hades has finally met the little ghost child who's been hanging around his dreams for more than ten years, and Hera...you know what? Not even getting into that in this description. Suffice to say, we have seven more episodes left after this one, and we've now got yet another thing for the list of Storylines That Really Need To Be Resolved, and it's amazing. This episode originally broadcast on April 4, 2024. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/04/binary-system-podcast-405-wtnv-245-fridge-worthy/ On this week's Night Vale recap, Carlos and Cecil hold an exclusive Art Show (ie: a family dinner so they can show off Estaban's drawing on the fridge) and we get some of our favorite horror tropes: unreliable narrators, creepy jumps in time, and pictures that change when you're not looking at them. Or do they? No, they totally do. (Keep your eye on the owls.) After that Elizabeth goes over this year's WonderCon (short version: it rained the whole time, but you can't keep the cosplayers down) and Kathryn gives an enthusiastic thumbs up to Dune Part 2. (Make sure you get good seats, you'll want to see everything because man alive is it pretty.) Before we wrap up we also mention how Lore Olympus is ending at episode 280 and if we don't get the resolution to at least seven different plotlines we're going to be cross. (Unless she's just moving from Webtoons to another format, in which case shut up and take our money.) This week's outro is a clip from Unrighteous by Beat Mekanik. Originally broadcast on March 28, 2024. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/03/binary-system-podcast-404-lore-olympus-episode-270-and-271/ The first half of Lore Olympus episode 270 is light on dialog. Baby Dionysus starts the most adorable Hero's Journey ever as he sets off to rescue Hades and Persephone. The cuteness balances out the second half of the episode, with images of Hades dealing with his worst nightmare: being a child at the mercy of his father Kronos. No physical abuse (in this episode anyway), but still, bleak. Episode 271 jumps to Hera and Persephone in Tartarus, preparing to take on Kronos. Hera is obviously ready to sacrifice herself, but there's still some hope; Hera's skills at conversation can make even a titan stop and think for a bit, and Persephone has already demonstrated that she now has the power to make a god bleed. Not much else going on in the nerd world right now, so we talk for a bit about the latest developments with the Royal Family (get well soon), and about the plans for the next Fyre Festival. And by "plans" we mean McFarland is releasing commercials and selling tickets less than a year before a festival that isn't even 1% ready to go. Again. Everybody stock up on popcorn, the "Fyre2" documentary is gonna be wild. This week's outro is a clip from Thumper by Beat Mekanik.
