There is a sentiment going around that Akira is mid. Richard Lewis, Thorin, and MonteCristo are here to tell you that the internet is wrong, but also that the people who told you it was a flawless 10 out of 10 masterpiece were wrong too. The truth is more interesting than either side. Akira's animation is a genuine 10 out of 10. Nothing from 1988 looks like this. Almost nothing from 2026 looks like this. The craftsmanship is immaculate, every frame hand-drawn with a fluidity and detail that makes anime produced a decade later look cheap by comparison. The soundtrack is spectacular. The world-building drops you into Neo-Tokyo without a single line of exposition. You don't even hear the word "Akira" for 50 minutes in a movie called Akira. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The Esports World Cup 2026 will not be in Riyadh, and the industry that couldn't stop tweeting five years ago has gone completely silent. Thorin, Richard Lewis, and MonteCristo reunite to break down what the EWC's last-minute move to Paris actually reveals about the Saudi Arabian sportswashing project. The official line is that this was always part of the plan. The reality, per Richard's reporting, is that boots-on-the-ground staff were being told it was 100% Riyadh the day before the announcement. That gap between the press release and what people were actually told is the whole story. A Civil Action has the most stacked cast of any movie you've never seen. Robert Duvall, John Travolta, James Gandolfini, Tony Shalhoub, John Lithgow, William H. Macy, and Stephen Fry. It's a 6.5 out of 10 film elevated to must-watch by performances alone. Richard Lewis, MonteCristo, and Thorin break down why Duvall's Harvard defense attorney is the best thing in the movie and why the movie itself can't keep up with him. Robert Duvall wrote it, directed it, and delivered his career-best performance in it. The Apostle is a $5 million Southern Gothic character study about a charismatic Pentecostal preacher who murders a man with a baseball bat at his own children's Little League game, flees to small-town Louisiana, and builds an entirely new congregation from scratch. He is a wife-beater, a womanizer, a killer, and a true believer. There is no rug pull. Richard Lewis, MonteCristo, and Thorin break down why this is the most honest film about faith Hollywood has ever made. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. It's another Review Roundup episode of The Genre of Your Life Podcast, and Doug is covering two very different—but equally talked-about—films.First up, The Devil Wears Prada 2 steps back into the world of high fashion, power dynamics, and cutting one-liners. Doug breaks down whether the sequel actually brings anything new to the table or just rehashes the runway. Then things take a sharp turn with Is God Is—a bold, intense story that doesn't pull any punches. Doug unpacks the performances, the tone, and whether the adaptation lands its emotional weight or overwhelms its audience. From designer heels to heavy themes, this episode swings between glamour and grit in true Genre of Your Life fashion.
Colors came out in 1988 and was the first film to put the Bloods and Crips on screen by name. It feels cheesy now. It would have felt raw as hell then. Richard Lewis, MonteCristo, and Thorin open the Robert Duvall arc with the movie that crawled so Training Day, The Wire, and End of Watch could run. Recorded live at the Retail Technology Show at ExCeL London in partnership with TNS. Host Graham Barrett speaks with leaders from across retail, hospitality and technology to explore the pressures shaping store operations, payments, fulfilment and customer experience in 2026. 1/ Jon Cole, Director of Product and Technical Solutions, TNS 2/ Shazmeen Malik, Partner Brands and Flexible Fulfilment Director, ASOS 3/ Martin Ward, Head of Software UK&I, Toshiba 4/ Gemma Edlin, Retail Director, Company Shop Group 5/ Richard Lewis, Group Chief Executive Officer, RedCat Hospitality 6/ Meriel Neighbour, Director of Technology Delivery and Transformation, River Island The episode opens with Jon Cole, Director of Product and Technical Solutions at TNS, who discusses the surge in retailer focus on resilience and cybersecurity and why hybrid cloud/on‑premise architectures are becoming essential. Next, Shazmeen Malik, Partner Brands & Flexible Fulfilment Director at ASOS, dives into the art of marketplace curation. She explains how ASOS balances global brands with emerging labels, why 20% of its branded portfolio is now newly onboarded, and how flexible fulfilment models, from partner fulfilment to ASOS Fulfilment Services, enable scale without compromising customer experience. Shazmeen also shares how ASOS is using AI for personalisation, outfitting and virtual try‑on, describing it as “super exciting” for discovery‑led shopping. We then hear from Martin Ward, Head of Software UK&I at Toshiba, who explores why retail transformations fail when they prioritise technology over people. He reflects on Toshiba's work with Matalan, the importance of involving store colleagues early, and why retailers must “test and learn and fail fast” to drive meaningful change. Martin also offers a grounded view on Agentic AI, its potential, its risks, and why adoption must be purposeful rather than hype‑driven. Next, Gemma Edlin, newly appointed Retail Director at Company Shop Group, explains how the UK's largest surplus supermarket prevents waste at scale, redistributing products from over 800 brands and stopping 47,000 tonnes of waste last year alone. She discusses dynamic pricing, robotics in the warehouse, and how AI could help set “the right price first time” to balance commercial viability with affordability and trust. Richard Lewis, Group CEO of RedCat Hospitality, shares a hospitality perspective on loyalty and digital micro‑donations. He emphasises that loyalty begins with consistently great experiences: “customers don't give you praise for getting the basics right, but when you get it wrong, they tell you”. He explores how data, communication and digital engagement can drive frequency across pubs and hotels. Finally, Meriel Neighbour, Director of Technology Delivery and Transformation, River Island closes the episode with a fashion retail perspective, sharing how a major high‑street brand is thinking about modern store operations, digital enablement and the evolving role of the physical store in a technology‑rich, customer‑driven world. A rich, fast‑paced episode capturing the realities of modern retail and hospitality, from cybersecurity and payments infrastructure to marketplace strategy, store transformation, waste reduction and customer loyalty.

I've known comedian/writer/animal activist Elayne Boosler for a couple of decades, but there's so much I didn't know! We got loads of juicy bits from the woman who pioneered stand-up comedy for all who followed in her wake. From her earliest days at The Improv in New York, a waitress/hostess, who needed Andy Kaufman's help to differentiate the brown drinks, to her love/hate relationship with proprietor, Bud Friedman, swooning over 20-year-old Richard Lewis, MC'ing without an act or a net, singing and then not thanks to now partner Andy, who Elayne credits with teaching her “everything.” Tom Waits? Who knew! We got a great story there. Robin Williams, to Bill Siddons, her husband of 30 years, with whom she shares a home in Italy, and a great line to sum up the current state of their union. We got lots on Italy, the when, where, why, and how. Elayne was always a must-see for me whenever she appeared on TV, and hugely impactful when I tried my hands and feet at standup. I could never be as smart, but she gave me permission to let my sass shine. A fan for decades, it was a pinch-me moment when we met on the Facebook and became instant friends. It translated to the reals not long after, over pizza in New York, and sometime after that, with Elayne gracing my living room for Women Who Write. It's taken 10 years to get this sit down, she was well worth the wait. Despite a couple of tech glitches, I adored every moment, and I'm so grateful for all the laughs, so needed now. I'm about to do a YouTube Elayne deep dive and continue to lose myself in her brilliant shine. Elayne Boosler Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Wed, April 8th, 5 pm PT, 8 pm ET
After Kill Bill nearly broke them, Richard Lewis, Thorin, and MonteCristo close the Tarantino arc with the film that was supposed to prove he still had it. The verdict: Inglourious Basterds contains two of the finest scenes Tarantino has ever directed (the farmhouse interrogation and the basement bar), but the rest of the movie can't sustain the altitude those scenes reach. What could have been a profound meditation on the power of cinema, the banality of evil, and Jewish catharsis instead settles for machine-gunning Hitler's corpse on the floor of a burning theater. Kill Bill held a special place in a lot of hearts. The Whole Bloody Affair was supposed to be the definitive version: Tarantino's original vision restored as a single four-and-a-half-hour film. Richard Lewis, Thorin, and MonteCristo sat through all of it, and what they found was the precise moment Quentin Tarantino disappeared up his own references. Everything that made Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction brilliant, such as the compelling dialogue, the clever homage, the subversion of genre, is replaced here by wholesale theft from better movies that the audience can now watch for free on YouTube. Pulp Fiction is one of the most hyped films in cinema history and Richard Lewis, Thorin, and MonteCristo are here to confirm that even after 30 years the hype is entirely earned. What shocked them most wasn't the violence or the nonlinear structure, but how slow the film actually is. Strip away the iconic moments seared into cultural memory and what you find is a movie dominated by two people talking, and it's riveting every single time. Mint Mobile: Ditch overpriced wireless. Before Pulp Fiction made Quentin Tarantino a household name, there was Reservoir Dogs — a film so raw and transgressive it was banned in the UK for years, circulated on pirate VHS tapes, and became the blueprint for an entire generation of filmmaking. A guy who worked in a video store in LA wrote and directed this. Wrap your head around that. Richard Lewis, MonteCristo, and Thorin kick off Four Play's Tarantino Arc with the film that started it all. They dig into why Reservoir Dogs was banned in the UK (and what the Jamie Bulger case had to do with it), how Tarantino's background as a video store clerk — obsessively watching foreign cinema and genre trash alike — produced one of the most assured directorial debuts in film history, and why this movie, despite its reputation as a "video nasty," has a surprisingly low body count and a genuine soul underneath the blood. The crew breaks down what makes the non-linear storytelling genius rather than gimmick, unpacks the iconic Mr. Blonde torture scene and what Michael Madsen brought to that role, makes the case for Steve Buscemi's Mr. Pink as the film's true protagonist, and explains how the K-Billy Super Sounds of the 70s changed how soundtracks work in movies — commercially and culturally — forever. This is the beginning of Four Play's deep dive through Tarantino's career. Coming next: Pulp Fiction. The arc is just getting started. Mint Mobile — If you like your money, Mint Mobile is for you! It's a Triple Feature Review Roundup on The Genre of Your Life Podcast!
It's a Review Roundup episode of The Genre of Your Life Podcast!
In 1995, a film predicted POV recording technology, VR experiences you can buy on the black market, deepfake manipulation, police brutality caught on camera, and a society addicted to experiencing other people's lives through a screen. It starred Ralph Fiennes, Angela Bassett, and was written by James Cameron. Almost nobody saw it. Strange Days bombed at the box office, nearly destroyed Kathryn Bigelow's career, and has been virtually impossible to find ever since, as right now no streaming service carries it. But everything it warned us about has come true, and somehow the reality is worse than the fiction. MonteCristo, Thorin, and Richard Lewis make the case for why this is one of the most important sci-fi films ever made. We get into the SQUID tech that directly inspired Cyberpunk 2077's Braindances, the darkest plot device in sci-fi, Ralph Fiennes as the perfect cyberpunk noir anti-hero, Angela Bassett's tragically wasted career as an action star, the Rodney King and OJ parallels baked into the script, and a long conversation about how AI, social media, and surveillance culture have made this film more relevant than ever. Roger Ebert gave it 4 stars in 1995 and called it a future cult classic. He was right. Again. Should Riot Games remove franchising from League of Legends? In this episode of The Four Horsemen, Monte, Thorin, Richard Lewis, and Guest Horseman/esports attorney Harris Peskin break down why franchising was created, what the teams actually demanded from Riot, how Overwatch League accelerated the timeline, and why dissolving franchising today would be far more complicated—and far more damaging—than many fans realize. Remember Robin Hood: Men in Tights from 1993? We do… or at least we thought we did. It's been a long time since we last watched this one, but c'mon, it's Mel Brooks. Starring Cary Elwes, Dave Chappelle, Richard Lewis, and Amy Yasbeck, and directed by the iconic Brooks himself, this should be a slam dunk, right? As we revisit what would become Mel Brooks' penultimate film, we find ourselves asking an important question: Does Men in Tights still fire off laughs like a well-aimed arrow, or does it trip, fall, and land in a deeply uncomfortable, “wow, that really looked like it hurt” faceplant?

One of the things about my podcast that brings me the greatest joy is when I can introduce my listeners to a wide range of singers that need to be better-known. Back when I was preparing birthday episodes in October, I chose literally hundreds of tracks that I wanted to share with my listeners. At the time I made use of only a handful of them, so today I have once again dipped into that vat of gorgeous, expressive voices to bring another foretaste of what's to come on the podcast. There's a special section on some amazing tenors (Alain Vanzo, Wiesław Ochman, George Thill, Anton de Ridder, Richard Lewis, Charles Kullman and many others); I also introduce a plethora of singers of color who will be appearing throughout Black History Month (Madeline Bell, Bertice Reading, Maxine Sullivan, the late Iris Williams, Adelaide Hall, Roland Hayes, Faye Robinson, and Toni Harper, along with many others). It's offered in a spirit of solidarity, communal sharing, and generosity as we face together the tough times ahead. Countermelody is the podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and author yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly or yearly support at whatever level you can afford.
THE GREEN KNIGHT (2021) is often described as abstract, slow, or confusing, but those labels miss what the film is actually doing. Directed by David Lowery, this Arthurian adaptation isn't a puzzle to be solved, but a moral fable about avoidance and the cost of refusing to grow up. In this episode of Four Play, Richard Lewis, MonteCristo, and Thorin break down why The Green Knight is less concerned with symbolism and mythology than it is with character. Gawain's journey isn't about heroism, it's about procrastination, self-deception, and the terrifying moment when excuses run out. Rather than presenting a traditional fantasy quest, the film strips the genre down to its emotional core. Each encounter tests Gawain not with strength or cleverness, but with honesty and courage, which are virtues he repeatedly fails to embody until the moment that finally matters. SEASON 4 EPISODE 46: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: Well, that's it in sum, isn't it? He's "El Presidente" now, isn't he? Military Dictator. Succeeding Maduro. Until he finds somebody else to “run” it. Not the elected Vice President. Not the actual winner of the last election. Not the U-N. Maybe somebody he, in his dysfunctional haze, somebody he can trust. Maybe an oil executive. Or Elon Musk. Or Catturd. The invasion was illegal there, and illegal here. The kidnapping was illegal. Declaring we would run it is illegal. Naming a proxy dictator is illegal. As was his threat yesterday to the acting president that quote “if she doesn’t do what’s right, she is going to pay a very big price, probably bigger than Maduro” and calling for her belief that her country shouldn’t be invaded by another country breaking its own laws is quote “defiant rejection.” THAT’S illegal. It’s all illegal. That’s a lot of illegal – even for Trump. And I say this, hating Maduro completely. So he needs to be impeached, if not now then a year from now. Rubio can be impeached now for deceiving Congress about its approval. And both of them turned over to the World Court. And the ramifications are almost uncountable, including emboldening them to consider this in Cuba, Greenland, Iran. The poll numbers are terrible, and the risk to Americans of terrorism and violence are just as terrible. And maybe worst of all the evidence of linkage between Putin's strange silence about his ally Maduro, and Trump's dithering about Ukraine, is terrible too. But at least it produced a pretty good Olivia Nuzzi joke. ALSO: WHY DID THEY CHANGE THE TRUMP HEALTH COVER-UP STORY AGAIN? Five significant changes, about his MRI/CT, his cardiovascular health, and now the total of Cognitive tests he's gotten in just the last nine months. Three? Not two? He's really needed three tests in nine months? To repeat the insightful question from his niece Mary Trump: Why do they have to keep giving him cognitive tests? B-Block (40:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: There's begging the new boss to let you keep your current job, then there's what CBS Legal Analyst Jan Crawford is doing for Bari Weiss to try to keep hers. Chuck Schumer comes out firing on Venezuela: with one-millionth of one barrel blazing. And just when you think Cheryl Hines can't get any dumber, Tucker Carlson tries to talk to her about vaccines. C-Block (50:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Will Ferrell did a great comedy bit at the L.A. Kings hockey game on New Year's Day and he did it for the pure joy of it. Which reminded me of the difference between amateurs and pros, and of the days when "Anchorman" was new and Will and I ad libbed a pretty good comedy bit that he said he really loved doing. This week I present two episodes featuring Christmas music which I originally produced six years ago, in the earliest days of Countermelody. Both episodes zero in on tenors; I'll be republishing them both this week. This first episode features a panoply of superb tenors (including Georges Thill, Richard Lewis, Roland Hayes, Tino Rossi, Franco Corelli, Ernst Haefliger, Richard Tauber, Charles Holland, Karl Erb, and Matthew Swensen) in repertoire ranging across the spectrum (Handel, Adam, Gounod, Bach, Berlin, and traditional Weihnachtsmusik), with some surprises along the way. The episode concludes with a brief musical tribute to Dalton Baldwin, Gérard Souzay's partner and collaborator, who had just died on 12 December 2019 at the age of 87 as this episode was first going to press. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song.

Josh Levine's Pretty, Pretty, Pretty Good: Larry David and the Making of Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, Fully Revised and Updated (ECW Press, 2025) is fully revised and includes a full insightful episode guide to the entire "Curb Your Enthusiasm." For Larry David, success was no sure thing. A frustrated New York comic who was known to walk off the stage in disgust, David was barely making a living. At least until his friend Jerry Seinfeld asked him to create a new kind of television sitcom for NBC. The result — Seinfeld — started slowly but became a gigantic hit. But most people didn't know that the real genius behind the show was Larry David. Rich beyond his wildest dreams, David still had something to prove — and some television boundaries to push. And so he created Curb Your Enthusiasm, the improvised comedy that cast aside political correctness and made for hilarious, cringeworthy TV, a show that dared to relive the disastrous Seinfeld finale and turn it into a triumph. This second, fully updated edition of Pretty, Pretty, Pretty Good offers a complete episode-by-episode guide to the series and recounts David's early struggle to succeed in television and movies, the creation and development of his hit sitcoms, and his later success starring in the HBO film Clear History and the Broadway hit Fish in the Dark. It also explores Larry's on- and offscreen relationships with famous pals like Richard Lewis, Ted Danson, and Jerry, Jason, Julia, and Michael. Filled with candor and humor David himself would respect, Pretty, Pretty, Pretty Good is an essential companion to a comedic force. Learn more about your ad choices. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is one of the most influential works of horror, science fiction, and gothic literature, but does Guillermo del Toro's long-awaited 2025 adaptation succeed in its representation of the novel? In this episode of Four Play, MonteCristo, Thorin, and Richard Lewis dig into why this debate the merits of the films visuals, story, and faithfulness to the original themes. While our hosts may not enjoy the source material, the ideas behind the story could be compelling on film if interpreted properly. However, considering the narrative inconsistencies and the surprising lack of tension, the hosts explore how Frankenstein ends up being a film that has all the pieces but none of the spark that makes the story immortal. Along the way, they talk about the legacy of gothic horror, the challenges of adapting philosophical novels for modern audiences, how del Toro's filmmaking strengths and weaknesses show through, and why this version feels more like a visual poem than a fully realized narrative.
