Hey Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of Together, We're Gonna Find Our Way: An Unofficial Silver Spoons Podcast. Today, I covered S4E11 The Barbarians, which aired on December 8, 1985. In this episode Edward's father invites him and Ricky to join him at a lodge. And it is there that he unleashes his wild side. When one of his lodge mates plays a prank on him, he sets out to get back at him with Edward and Ricky's help. The time has come I never thought I'd see the day with this show where I would rate any episode less than a two out of five, the Season 2 Mr. President holds that record as the worst episode for me of Silver Spoons. Well, S4E11: The Barbarians in my opinion topped that with my one star rating and taking over as the worst episode of Silver Spoons for me. Now mind you, I still have the rest of Season 4 to get through and all of Season 5 to cover so who knows this may change. I also covered S4E12; Three Musketeers, which aired on December 15, 1985. In this episode Freddy writes a letter that catches the attention of Congressman Tip O'Neill. I though this episode was good, for being Freddy's (Corky Pigeon) last episode. I can see why they chose to move away from Freddy since Brad came on to fill the new Derek Taylor role and now that Rick is getting older, there isn't room for Freddy's goofy and clumsy self. Join me next week for a three episode podcast episode. Yes, for the remainder of Season 4. I will be covering three episodes a week. S4E13: Second Class Parent, which aired on December 21, 1985. In this episode While Edward is out of town, Kate gives Rick permission to go to Fort Lauderdale for winter vacation. S4E14: The Lady is A Tramp, which aired on January 5, 1986. in this episodeRick invites a bag lady to dinner where she makes quite an impression on a client of Edward's. S4E15: Stratton & Stratton, which aired on January 12, 1986. In this episode Rick invents a board game called Rock Express, but refuses to take Edward's advice on how to market it. Have a good week everyone. Stay Home, Stay Safe and Stay Positive! We WILL Get through This!

Hey Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of Together, We're Gonna Find Our Way: An Unofficial Silver Spoons Podcast. Today, I covered Silver Spoons S4E9: A Magnificent Obsession, which aired on November 24, 1985. In this episode Rick tries to win back his girlfriend when she leaves him for the captain of the football team. And I also covered S4E10: Judgement Day, which aired on December 1, 1985. In this episode when Edward lectures him about his poor geometry grade, Rick goes crazy trying to improve it. I really enjoyed both these episodes, but if I had to choose one over the other, I think I would have to go with A Magnificent Obsession, the songs they played and Rick's wardrobe montage in the beginning shows it's beginning to appeal to the teenage demographic hard. I feel the teenagers could identify with Rick going through what a teenager goes through worrying about self image, dating and parents pressuring their kids to get good grades especially when it comes to college. Join me next week when I cover S4E11: The Barbarians, which aired on December 8, 1985. In this episode Edward's father invites him and Ricky to join him at a lodge. Chutzpah and Soul: In Memory of Lenny Bruce

Johnny interviews Barney Frank, member of Congress from Massachusetts 1980-2012, now retired in Maine, but as vibrant and opinionated as ever. He's writing a book on the legacy of John Maynard Keynes, the British economist who rescued the world and the U.S. from The Great Depression by stimulating economic growth via government intervention. Barney argues that Keynes' economic mantra is now counterproductive because the emphasis on growth is accelerating economic inequality worldwide. He advocates that addressing economic fairness is as critical as growth. And in a bow in the direction of new economic measurements, he concurs with Johnny that the World Happiness Index, in which the U.S. scores a pathetic 39th, is relevant. Barney is truly an eminence grise of the Democratic Party as well as of progressive and gay politics, and a prominent informal Jewish leader, with an international reputation. But this frank discussion is not an echo chamber as Johnny advances the prophetic warnings of Yale History Professor Timothy Snyder, author of On Tyranny (2017) and The Road to Unfreedom (2018), a leading expert of fascism. These NY Times bestsellers, were the intellectual opening shot in the Resistance to Trumpism, but Barney has not read them and doesn't feel that Trump's frontal assaults on democracy, attacks on the press, and destruction of the English language, including the famous quote "alternative truth" does not equal 1984 (George Orwell, 1949), because Kelly Anne Conway was totally ridiculed for that. Johnny counters, citing Professor Snyder, that the institutions of democracy are extremely vulnerable and many professionals have already been compromised, as they were on the road to Nazism in Germany. But Barney is particularly convinced by the 2018 mid-term elections which flipped the House back to the Democrats, that Americans have successfully resisted fascism and authoritarianism. As for Trump's demagoguery against the press, he feels that our press has been comprehensive and unafraid in revealing Trump's doings. Johnny cites some of the most blatant fascist actions of Trump in real time, live on TV, during the House Impeachment Trial, as evidence that we're not safe by any means. And so on.On a more positive note, the famous Boston legend, told and retold countless times, is the 1968 story of how the City of Boston averted the African American riots post MLK assassination partly by arranging a scheduled JAMES BROWN concert at Boston Garden to be broadcast on WGBH-TV. Then community leaders and the Mayor urged Boston's youth to stay home and watch the free concert. Barney, who was chief of staff for then Mayor Kevin White, reveals some details never heard before by Johnny or Steve Folsom, both of whom have heard this story many times. Finally, despite the fact that famous local Cambridge legend, Tip O'Neill, House Speaker (1977-1987), wanted him to become the first Jewish Speaker of the House, and it never happened, Barney has no regrets and feels the glass is half full...that he achieved much more success than he could ever have imagined. We end the episode with No Regrets, by Tom Rush, singer-songwriter.Support the show (https://www.gofundme.com/f/podcast-chutzpah-and-soul-in-memory-of-lenny-bruce?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link-tip&utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet)

OBAMA'S GAMBIT IN KENYA During a speech made in Kenya, Barack Obama referred to himself as "the first sitting American President to come from Kenya." This has reignited social media into a storm of controversy about Obama's actual place of birth. The whole thing is ridiculous because the question has been settled: Obama was born in Hawaii. But why would Obama say something like this if it were not true? There are some very clever political reasons why Obama would like to renew the controversy. Let's examine some of them. To do so, it would be best to examine an often overlooked aspect of the controversy. When Obama graduated from Harvard, he planned to write a book. The book itself was never written, but Obama employed a publicist that also worked for other prominent people, like Tip O'Neill, who at the time was Speaker of the House. A pamphlet containing bio sketches of each of her clients was printed and distributed in 1991. Obama's entry noted that he was born in Kenya. It was believed that the pretense of being Kenyan born would make Obama's book more attractive to potential publishers. Snopes Link Obama had to know what his publisher wrote on his behalf. It's hard to imagine a publicist for an young, ambitious and driven Harvard Law grad being able to write a single word about her client without his full knowledge and consent. The pamphlet remained uncorrected and in circulation for 17 years. It was only corrected in early 2008, when it resurfaced as so many things do, in the heat of the Democrat Party's campaign nomination process. But by then, people in the Clinton Campaign had already latched onto the Kenyan birth conspiracy. Politically, claiming Obama was actually Kenyan born and not eligible to become President due to vague and arcane rules existing at the time of his birth about the duration of residency, particularly for his father, seemed petty, even racially motivated. Obama claimed to be born in Hawaii and there seemed to be a preponderance of circumstantial evidence pointing in that direction. Enough at least, to marginalize those still questioning his eligibility to become President. While the controversy settled down on the Democrat side of the aisle, it was only getting started on the Republican side. Obama kept just enough of his personal background out of site and the media was sufficiently incurious about his personal background to perpetuate the controversy. People would ask, "where are his college transcripts?" "Where is his birth certificate?" One Kenyan Aunt claimed to have witnessed his birth in Kenya. The governor of Hawaii had his birth certificate or other related documents in the state archives. It seemed that the controversy could be ended once and for all if Obama, by this time, President, simply released his birth certificate proving the location of his birth. Politically, it made no sense for Obama to do it. By not releasing them, he could marginalize his opponents by conflating them with conspiracy theorists as people on the fringe of reality. That works to empower a politician. Eventually, Obama released his birth certificate, but not before tampering with them, which again was politically brilliant. Why? Because it divided the birther conspiracists into those who would accept his birth certificate and those who still believed it was a fraud. This is what leftists do, folks. They are all about psychological operations using information and disinformation. Obama releases long form birth certificate: CNN Sheriff Joe Arpaio: Obama's birth certificate is a forgery Perpetuating the birther conspiracy was so politically effective for Obama, it appears as though he might be attempting to get it started again. Consider this: How damaging would it be to President Trump's credibility if he were to start tweeting endlessly about Obama's statement in Kenya? Trump was one of those obsessed with Obama's proof of citizenship and natural born qualifications. He gave up the ghost on it very reluctantly. If he were to obsess about it again, it would alienate at least some of his supporters, who are currently as loyal as any politician could ever hope for. So, this podcast is a word of warning to the Commander in Chief, Donald J Trump: Don't fall for Obama's trap. He's attempting to goad you. Taking the bait will not serve America and it will not make us greater or stronger.

Tip O'Neill famously said, "All politics is local." And the great man was right - because that school board member you elect today can be the Senator representing you tomorrow. Unfortunately, Democrats have a bad habit of focusing just on the big, national races and skipping their local elections. The result is lopsided representation that favors conservatives. Is it because older, retired citizens have more time to engage in civic duties? Or is it a result of today's test-heavy education practices that de-emphasize subjects like civics? At any rate, more Democrats need to become more involved at the local level because that is our only recourse against the onslaught of billionaire influence in the era of Citizens United. Guest Erin Kotecki Vest talks about her efforts to persuade her local school board to comply with California's FAIR Act (enacted two years ago and so far ignored by her school district). And Cynematic updates on primary races with an emphasis on education (and Common Core). MOMocrats Cynematic, Karoli and Donna Schwartz Mills discuss politics from the progressive point of view. There was a time when civility and compromise lay at the heart of politics in Washington; when political and ideological rivals could serve together to forge compromises for the benefit of the country. Today it's hard to believe that this was ever the case, and it begs the question: will civility and compromise ever return to American politics? Having served as the Chief of Staff for Tip O'Neill, Chris Matthews offers a unique perspective on a time when the Speaker of the House and the President, Ronald Reagan, were able to "temper their philosophical divide with a public, and sometimes personal, cordiality." Chris Matthews sits down with the World Affairs Council to discuss a political heroism that once was and the lessons it offers for today's political climate.Speaker Chris Matthews is Host of Hardball on MSNBC.For more information about this event, visit: http://www.worldaffairs.org/events/2013/will-politics-in-washington.html
