Last January the hedge fund Alden Global Capital sold The Baltimore Sun to David Smith, an executive at Sinclair Broadcast Group. Smith once told Trump that Sinclair was "here to deliver your message.” He is also known to support conservative causes like Moms for Liberty. It's been a year and with the release of new circulation numbers, its clear that whatever Smith is doing at the Sun, isn't working: Circulation is down, web traffic is down, journalists are leaving in the their droves. After the sale went through last year, we spoke to Milton Kent, professor of practice in the School of Global Journalism and Communication at Morgan State University and Liz Bowie, who worked at The Sun for over 30 years before making the jump to the nonprofit, the Baltimore Banner.  On the Media is supported by listeners like you. A warm welcome back to our Moneda visionaries. In the first week of the Trump administration, several actions have deeply impacted our community, particularly with heightened immigration enforcement and the removal of Spanish-language resources from the White House website. These moves, coupled with the threat of large-scale deportations, DEI order, and the dismantling of environmental justice programs disproportionately affect Latinos. At Moneda Moves, we understand the power of stories, and we are committed to reporting responsibly at the intersection of money and cultura, especially as it applies to our leading entrepreneurial population. The numbers don't lie: Latinos accounted for 36% of all new businesses in 2023, nearly double their 19% representation in the U.S. population. Immigrant Latinos are more than twice as likely to start a net new business compared to the U.S.-born population. The stories we tell matter, and more than ever, they will continue to shape our reality. That's why we started this platform—to ensure that the builders in our communities are seen and heard, especially when our contributions to the American economy and society for a long time went unrecognized in national headlines. Fundamentally, Moneda Moves believes in the inherent value of our community, as humans, but also in critical mass, and in our culture. This commitment remains steadfast.  In conversations with ecosystem builders who are working with underrepresented communities, it has been refreshing to know that we are not alone in this journey. A recent discussion reaffirmed the importance of staying informed, knowing our numbers which undeniably show the impact that we have together and how storytelling has the ability to create change. I highly recommend reading the 2023 State of Latino Entrepreneurship report by the Latino Business Action Network (LBAN) and Stanford Graduate School of Business.  The future is ours to shape, and we will continue to ensure that our stories are told with integrity and respect. This is why we are also joined today by Fernando Hurtado, a former manager of digital video for NBCUniversal Local and the host/producer of Bísness School. Bísness School is a podcast that highlights the stories of Latino-owned businesses and the fact that Latinos are the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs in the United States. That series won a silver Signal Award in 2024. Fernando has recently launched The Hyphen, a YouTube channel that covers one of the fastest-growing demographics, U.S. Latinos, with deeply researched, visually rich stories.  Beyond podcasting at major networks, Fernando was the lead producer on NBC's My New Favorite Olympian podcast, which was named best sports podcast at the Cynopsis Sports Media Awards.  He's expanded his coverage in this arena to the Paris, Tokyo, and Beijing Olympics for NBCUniversal Local. Hurtado was named to Broadcasting + Cable's 40 Under 40 in 2023. Prior to NBC, Fernando was at ATTN: and Sinclair Broadcast Group as a producer and editor. He is a graduate of the University of Southern California and lives in Los Angeles. He is currently an adjunct instructor of visual journalism and multiplatform Olympic and Paralympic storytelling there.  This journalist's mission is to highlight Latino-owned businesses in English in order to reach younger bilingual audiences who are looking for positive representation in entrepreneurial spaces. In his effort to do so, he has produced over 20 episodes with successful Latino entrepreneurs, including Annie Leal, the owner of the $4M business, I Love Chamoy. It is no surprise that while living in Los Angeles, Fernando, like myself hails from Chicago, which is heavily influenced by Latino-run businesses, in neighborhoods from La Villita to Pilsen and Humboldt Park. In addition to raising awareness about these businesses, he's also sharing what's working for them and what challenges they are facing in the entrepreneurial space so that other Latino entrepreneurs can learn from their stories. This week, Fernando shares how Latino entrepreneurs are using their stories to better market their products, why Latino businesses are seen as too niche or exclusive to other communities, and what trends he's seeing in 2025.  Follow Fernando on Instagram @byfernandoh and his website. As the public became aware of Ella Jones disappearance, the Mount Vernon Police Department receives information on a possible suspect's identity. The person was already said to possibly be a male named "Keith."  Investigators also determined that Ella Jones may have  used a "RideShare" service when she left her home. RideShare services are not prevalent in Ella Jones area, so Mount Vernon Police were able to narrow the search and locate a ride share Jones may have used. Investigators identified a man named "Keith" who ordered a ride share for Ella and his address in South Haven Michigan.   The FBI reaches out to Van Buren County Michigan Sherrif's department about a possible suspect named Keith Freerksen with an address in South Haven Michigan possibly being involved in the disappearance of a 14-year-old girl in Mt Vernon, Washington.   Van Buren County Sheriff Daniel Abbott says his detectives investigated the possible suspect location and identified the car suspected of transporting the 14-year-old girl 2,000 miles from Washington to Michigan. After obtaining a search warrant, Sheriff  Abbott says they waited for the suspect vehicle to return to the property before executing the search warrants. Sheriff  Abbott says as the detectives watched the property, they noticed there are three homes on the property and several people are seen in the residences. The suspect was identified as one of the people in one of the residences on the property.  Detectives coordinate with the local uniformed police officers in marked cars to roll in with them and execute the search warrant . Having executed the search warrant, all individuals on the property were separated so detectives could begin the interview process. The suspect immediately told detectives the 14-year-old girl was there on the property. Once the suspect was read his Miranda rights, he lawyered up and stopped talking The suspect is 30-year-old Keith Freerksen, a convicted sex offender. Sheriff Daniel Abbott says the Freerksen spoke with and groomed the victim online over an extended period of time before she took a ride share to the suspect's home in Michigan. Keith Freerksen was arraigned on nine charges: two counts of trafficking a minor, three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a minor, one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, one count of accosting a child for immoral purposes and two counts of using a computer to commit a crime. U.S. News & World Report has released its new law school rankings after a boycott by nearly one-third of law schools and a three-week delay due to data problems. Changes in the methodology of the publication led to notable shifts among elite law schools and significant movement among many schools further down on the list. The changes increased the weight of employment outcomes and bar passage rates and reduced the weight of Law School Admission Test scores and undergraduate grade-point averages. U.S. News defended its rankings as vital sources of information for prospective students. The final rankings show Stanford Law School and Yale Law School tied at the No. 1 spot, with the University of Chicago School of Law holding steady at No. 3. The year's rankings shakeup was most apparent outside the elite schools, with 62 law schools seeing their ranks increase or decrease by double digits this year compared with 27 schools last year. Duquesne University Thomas R. Kline School of Law saw the single largest increase, moving up 40 spots to No. 89, and Florida International University College of Law was next with an increase of 38 spots to land No. 60.Revamped US News law school rankings yield major shifts | ReutersThe Biden administration's plan to cut carbon dioxide emissions from power plants aims to require the nation's coal plants and the largest gas-fired units to cut nearly all of their emissions. However, the proposed limits would apply to less than 20% of US natural gas-based power generation capacity, and utilities would have over a decade to comply with greenhouse gas caps. Some industry groups are warning the plan could force power plants to adopt costly technologies that aren't economically or technically feasible, while environmental advocates say it doesn't go far enough, and too many gas-fired plants are exempt. The EPA proposal, which aims to be finalized in 2024, would inevitably face legal and political challenges. Some Republican attorneys general who successfully battled an earlier Obama-administration plan in court are expected to mount similar challenges. The foundation of the plan is the EPA's determination that for many power plants, the "best system of emission reduction" is carbon capture technology, which is barely in commercial use at the sites today. Coal power plants could keep operating through 2040, as long as they substituted natural gas for 40% of their fuel. The EPA predicts that the industry's demand for natural gas would fall 36.8% during the same time frame. The plan would increase electricity prices by 0.24% in 2035, while unlocking up to $85 billion in climate and public health benefits through 2042. The requirements would keep as much as 617 million metric tons of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere through 2042, according to the government's projections.Biden's Plan to Cut Climate Pollution Spares Most Gas PlantsNew York Congressman George Santos will continue serving despite facing criminal fraud and money laundering charges. There is no law or rule stopping him from staying in Congress. Santos entered a plea of not guilty to all 13 counts in the indictment against him. If he is found guilty, Speaker Kevin McCarthy has indicated he would ask him to resign, but don't count on it. Any member of the House can offer a privileged resolution to expel a colleague, but in the past, lawmakers have waited until after their accused colleagues had their day in court. Santos has introduced 11 bills and cosponsored 82. He has filed paperwork to raise money for a re-election bid, and his campaign raised just $5,333 in this year's first quarter. If he quits, there would be a special election if there's a vacancy before July 1, 2024, and Governor Kathy Hochul would call it. Before the law, unions could collect dues directly from teacher paychecks, but now that is prohibited. The Florida Education Association believes the law violates their First Amendment rights, while DeSantis argues it is in the best interest of teachers. The law also requires unions to notify teachers of membership costs, prohibits unions from using government resources to deduct union dues directly from employee paychecks, and requires unions be made up of at least 60% of eligible employees who pay dues. If they can't hit the new benchmark, unions would have to be recertified as bargaining agents. The FEA says the law is unfairly applied because it exempts unions representing law enforcement, corrections officers, and firefighters – how strange. The suit names Donald Rubottom, the chair of the Florida Public Employees Relations Commission, as a defendant, as well as commissioners Jeff Aaron and Michael Sasso. The lawsuit is ultimately asking the courts to keep the defendants from implementing and enforcing provisions of the law, which is SB 256.New Florida law putting restrictions on teachers' unions leads to federal lawsuit against state officialsA US bankruptcy judge has blocked the NBA's Phoenix Suns from proceeding with a TV and streaming rights deal with Gray Television and Kiswe, as it violated the rights of its current broadcast partner, Diamond Sports Group. The TVs are at 2400 hours of run time. If you watch your TV about 5 hours a day that's equivalent to almost a year and a half in just over three months. So what are they finding? Here are just some highlights. RTINGS.com has a very thorough investigation and explanation found in the article link: Longevity Burn-In Investigative Paths After 3 Months Three partial TV failures and one complete failure. The Samsung S95B OLED completely failed while the Hisense U7G, Sony X95J, and LG G2 OLED were deemed partial failures. Both QD-OLED displays are showing signs of potential permanent image retention Some of the Sony WOLED displays are also showing burn-in ( A8H, A80K, A80J, A90J, and A90K). After running a pixel refresh video they were able to nearly eliminate all image retention on the Sony A8H, A80K, and A90J. The Sony A80J and A90K, however, don't look any better, and it looks like this is a permanent burn-in on these two TVs. There were significant brightness fluctuations on a handful of TVs. While some of this variation can be explained by the margin of error of the test equipment, a few TVs warranted a deeper look to determine what was going on. Dominick Latorre is the Senior Director of Yield and Inventory Management at Sinclair Broadcast Group. He used to be the Manager of Pricing and Planning at Spectrum Reach, and he's the Assistant General Manager of the Men's National Team in USA Ball Hockey. In this episode, Dominick explains how they price slots for broadcast advertisements as he relates it to how airlines do pricing for their seats.   Why you have to check out today's podcast: Learn how Sinclair does pricing for perishable inventory like ads Understand how it's related to how airlines price their seats Find out why it's important that your sales people know how to make sure that your service is priced effectively   “It's educating yourself on different industries outside of yours and how you can take those concepts and those ideas and apply them to your business. – Dominick Latorre   Topics Covered: 02:01 – How Dominick got into pricing 04:12 – Sinclair's goal to improve efficiencies with the local pricing experts and revenue with pricing 06:41 – “It is not what I wanted. It's not what I wanted to buy.” 09:25 – Relating and comparing how Sinclair does pricing to how airlines price their seats 14:46 – The factors that affect how Sinclair price the programs 18:38 – Pricing for political campaigns 23:01 – Pricing table topics: “Create real value with differentiation. Create perceived value with marketing.” 25:36 – Dominick's pricing advice   Key Takeaways: “I'm very happy with the choice I made back in 2007-ish to get into pricing, because as obviously as you know, it's the biggest driver of profit if you're priced correctly, so much more than sales volume or anything else.” – Dominick Latorre “With the various choices for marketing dollars these days, you can't be upsetting clients and pulling multi-million-dollar deals because we weren't priced effectively and given them a rate that from day one it should have been a premium program; obviously, the demand is there. We should be charging it based upon that.” – Dominick Latorre “You can drive more revenue by lowering your rates, and we've seen that in some cases.” – Dominick Latorre “We talk to our sellers all the time. Sell the value of the program. Don't combine it with other solutions. Don't sell a customer what we call a 9A4P rotator, where basically that customer spot could fall anywhere between that time period. That's not selling value. Look at the value of our solutions and price accordingly to them.” – Dominick Latorre “With so many marketing solutions out there and dollars to be spent, you have to make sure that you're priced effectively. And again, talking about value, making sure that the buyers see the value in your solution.” – Dominick Latorre   People / Resources Mentioned: Sinclair Broadcast Group: https://sbgi.net/ Professional Pricing Society: https://www.pricingsociety.com/   Connect with Dominick Latorre: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dominicklatorre/ Email: dmlatorre@sbgtv.com   Connect with Mark Stiving: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stiving/ Email: mailto:mark@impactpricing.com

James was headed into the final year of his most recent deal with the Lakers, who signed the four-time NBA Most Valuable Player and four-time league champion in July 2018. Barring injury, James is likely to surpass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the NBA’s career scoring king this winter. NCAA – Big Ten – USC, UCLA exits could cost Pac-12 schools $13M in rights A new report says the departures of Southern California and UCLA from the Pac-12 Conference could mean an estimated loss of around $13 million per year in media rights for each of the remaining schools. The interim report was released during a Board of Regents meeting held at UCLA to address its move to the Big Ten Conference in 2024. California Gov. Gavin Newsom demanded an explanation from UCLA about the move when he attended last month’s Board of Regents meeting in San Francisco. None of the signing bonuses are mentioned. One provision says players would get a $1 million bonus if they were to win any of the four majors. Meanwhile, Greg Norman has sent a letter updating LIV Golf’s request for world ranking points. Golf – PGA – Players-only private meeting was all about a better PGA Tour Tiger Woods felt strongly enough about a private meeting of top PGA Tour players that he flew from Florida to Delaware to attend. What’s emerging from that players-only meeting is unity against a rival league funded by Saudi money and how to make the PGA Tour better. There was another form of unity. No one is willing to share details on the best way forward. Xander Schauffele says there was a code to keep tight lips. Rory McIlroy says the ideas are for tour executives to hear as they forge a path. As for Woods? McIlroy says he remains the biggest voice. NBA – LeBron James inks 2-year, $97.1 million deal with Lakers LeBron James has agreed to a two-year, $97.1 million contract extension through the 2024-25 season with the Los Angeles Lakers. The maximum deal includes a player option for the 2024-25 season that would keep the second-leading scorer in NBA history with the Lakers past his 40th birthday. UCLA and USC announced in June that the schools would be leaving the Pac-12 Conference in two years. USC is a private institution and not part of the UC system. Golf – LIV – Report: LIV draft contract has restrictions and major bonus The Wall Street Journal is reporting LIV Golf players need permission to grant exclusive interviews and agree to help recruit other players. The Journal says it reviewed a draft contract that Saudi-funded LIV Golf offered players. The newspaper says it wasn’t clear if terms in the draft are in all contracts or can be negotiated. NHL – Blackhawks agree to 1-year deal with D Jack Johnson The Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to a one-year contract with Jack Johnson after the veteran defenseman helped Colorado win the Stanley Cup last season. Johnson’s contract carries a $950,000 hit to the salary cap. General manager Kyle Davidson says Johnson “provides the team with a strong veteran presence, good size and a competitive edge.” The 35-year-old Johnson broke into the NHL with the Los Angeles Kings in 2007. He has 72 goals and 240 assists in 1,024 games, also playing for Columbus, Pittsburgh and the New York Rangers. NASCAR – Kimi Raikkonen hits pause on retirement to race NASCAR Kimi Raikkonen will take a break from his retirement to return to racing this weekend in the NASCAR race at Watkins Glen International in upstate New York. Rookies Steven Kwan and Oscar Gonzalez had RBI doubles, and Amed Rosario and Owen Miller added run-scoring singles in the eighth for the AL Central-leading Guardians. Tigers reliever Andrew Chafin struck out the first three batters in the inning, but tossed a wild pitch that allowed Luke Maile to run to first base and extend the frame. Cleveland then rattled off five straight hits and had seven consecutive men reach base. Astros 3, White Sox 2 – Valdez, Alvarez lead Astros to 3-2 win over White Sox Framber Valdez threw seven solid innings, Yordan Alvarez drove in a run and scored one, and the Houston Astros beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2. Chicago’s five-game winning streak ended. Valdez (12-4) gave up two runs and seven hits, struck out six and walked three. The left-hander is 4-0 in six starts since losing to Oakland on July 9. Alvarez drove in Jose Altuve with a sacrifice fly in the first. He singled and scored on Trey Mancini’s sac fly in the fourth. Cubs 3, Nationals 2 – Gomes’ RBI single in 7th lifts Cubs over Nationals 3-2 Yan Gomes hit a tie-breaking single in the seventh inning against his former team and the Chicago Cubs beat the Washington Nationals 3-2 to win the three-game series.
