Chris critiques the Dodd-Frank Act and the repeal of Glass-Steagall, arguing that both have contributed to the financial crises and the consolidation of power within Wall Street. He discusses the historical context of these regulations, the role of government in forcing banks to make risky loans, and the implications of these policies on the economy. www.watchdogonwallstreet.com

Today we bring you behind the scenes into our office at Healthcare NOW. Just like the TV show The Office, we have our hijinks and wacky characters, including some very smart interns! They have prepped some of their burning questions for this episode. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnG1C8DOZVY First, from Intern Noah from Boston College: In your opinion, what is the most effective way to organize/advocate for Medicare for All? Talk to one person, then another person, and then another! It doesn't start with money, marches, or celebrity endorsements (though if Oprah wants to support M4A, she should give us a call!) Those feel good, but without authentic relationships and networks, they don't make change. Unfortunately there are no shortcuts in organizing; we have to build the power ourselves. Do you have any funny stories from an experience meeting a member of congress? Gillian remembers meetings with former Republican U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, Scott Brown. Unfortunately all Senator Brown cared about was how the policy she was advocating for affected Dunkin Donuts. Gillian fondly remembers the time former U.S. Congressman Barney Frank told her that her hometown in New Jersey smelled bad. He also told a room full of constituents "the only thing that marches on Washington put pressure on is the grass in Washington, DC." Epic one-liner that we don't necessarily disagree with. (He already supported M4A so it was all good.) Intern Gulmeena, a public health student asks: When we talk about Medicare for all - are we thinking of a system with government run hospitals and government employed medical professionals? Do you think such a concept garners resistance or are people open to that paradigm shift? One of the most common attacks on M4A is to call it "socialized medicine." Very few countries actually have real socialized medicine, where insurance is public, all healthcare facilities are owned and operated publicly, and the healthcare professionals are public employees. In the United States, Medicare for All legislation does not socialize the facilities or professionals. By focusing on the payment mechanism, it would give the government a lot of power to reign in the worst parts of for-profit healthcare. Ben notes he has seen a poll showing a majority of Americans support socialized medicine, so who knows, maybe that's the future of the movement. Would Medicare for All include long term care for the elderly such as nursing homes and hospice? This has been a debate within our movement for a long time. Both M4A bills include long term care. The House version is more generous and comprehensive. The Senate bill would cover home-based long term care but not institutional. Currently most people get long term (which also includes care for people with disabilities) care through Medicaid, the healthcare program for the poorest Americans; this forces patients to spend down all their assets to qualify. Medicaid also has an institutional bias: it's much more likely to cover care in residential settings rather than homes, which is usually more expensive. If you're interested in advocacy around this issue, check out Caring Across Generations. Intern Ioanna (who hails from Greece, a country with universal healthcare): Considering that you have been a part of the movement since before Medicare for All was introduced by Sen. Sanders in 2017, how did you first hear about single payer healthcare, and what drove you into the movement at a time when it was not getting much or any (?) media attention? Back in the day of phone books and print newspapers, Gillian learned about universal healthcare from Ben! When her own employer-provided healthcare left her underinsured, a friend in the finance field told Gillian "if your job doesn't give you good health insurance, that's capitalism's way of telling you that your job isn't important and maybe you should get a new one.

Barney Frank represented Massachusetts in Congress from 1982 to 2012, thirty years in which he was one of the most powerful, smartest, and wittiest politicians in DC. He was also the first LGBTQ Congressman to voluntarily come out while in office, a highly controversial move in 1987 during the height of the AIDS crisis. I interviewed Barney remotely from his home in Ogunquit, Maine (where he now resides with his husband, James Ready). As I had expected, Barney's whip smart mind was evident as was his wit. What I hadn't expected were his answers to some of my questions. Most notably, I was surprised by his assessment of the state of our democratic system at present.
Former US Congressman Barney Frank has been described by the New York Times as "one of the people most responsible for overhauling financial regulation after the 2008 economic crisis".Little surprise, given that this acerbic politician was:
The past month has been a volatile one for the banking sector, and its impact has been felt across the entire global economy. On Friday, March 10, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation seized control of Silicon Valley Bank after a run on its deposits left it insolvent. The next domino to fall was crypto-friendly Signature Bank, which shut down on Sunday, March 12. While Credit Suisse has also since been absorbed by UBS, many lawmakers have criticized U.S. federal agencies' actions and pointed to rollbacks of consumer protections in the Dodd-Frank Act of 2018 as a primary contributor to the banks' collapse. The rollback lessened scrutiny for banks with less than $250 billion in assets, meaning the landmark, post-financial crisis law would only apply to a handful of big banks. In today's episode, Representative Barney Frank, the chief architect of that regulation, joins us to make light of the current situation. Congressman Frank served in Congress for over 30 years until 2013. He spent four of those years as Chair of the House Financial Services Committee. As one of the co-authors of Dodd Frank, Frank earned a reputation as one of the most outspoken members of Congress and authorities on financial regulation. He also happened to serve on the board of Signature Bank when it collapsed, and before taking on his role at Signature Bank, personally advocated for the $250 billion threshold adjustment. Listen along as Congressman Frank sheds light on the events of the past month, why he believes they did not represent a systemic failure, and why he believes business leaders need not adjust their banking approaches in the future.
Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank are the two midsize banks that just collapsed. But... how can we have major bank failures, with billions of dollars at stake. Didn't we learn how to regulate banks during the financial crisis of the Great Recession? That was barely 15 years ago! In this episode, my guest, Dr. Lawrence White, explains that almost always when a bank run occurs, it's on a bank that's already insolvent! And he explains that we've been here before. That is, we've experienced how increases in interest rates have caused bank crises in the past. Dr. White has much to say about the impact of the FDIC on our banking system. He tells me about a time before FDIC when banks functioned just fine... that the relied on capital reserves to attract depositors - not an FDIC sign on their window! But Dr. White doesn't just leave here. In the perspective segment of our conversation, he provides an alternative banking system - one without an FDIC and with minimal regulations. To learn more about Dr. White and his extensive research and publications, you can visit his academic homepage. In addition, below is a link to another podcast conversation with Dr. White: S2E11: History of US Inflation. Also, this is the link to The Daily, a New York Times podcast episode about Barney Frank. Barney Frank was one of the people most responsible for overhauling financial regulation after the 2008 economic crisis. After retiring from Congress, he supported a change to his own law that would benefit midsize banks, and joined the board of such a bank. Last week, that bank failed. David Enrich called Mr. Frank and asked him to explain.Guest: David Enrich, the business investigations editor at The New York Times. Background reading: Officials with Signature and Silicon Valley banks, which regulators seized in recent days, had called for looser financial requirements for midsize banks. Here's why people are worried about banks. For more information on today's episode, visit nytimes.com/thedaily. Hosts: Ansel Lindner and Christian Keroles Special co-host: Nolan Bauerle, @countbtc Fed Watch is a macro podcast with a clear contrarian thesis of a deflationary breakdown of the financial system leading to bitcoin adoption. We question narratives and schools of thought, and try to form new understanding. Each episode we use current events to question mainstream and bitcoin narratives across the globe, with an emphasis on central banks and currencies. (Find all associated charts and links at bitcoinandmarkets.com/fed136) In this episode, we are joined once again by Nolan Bauerle to bring you reporting on this crazy week in bitcoin and macro. Of course, we cover Credit Suisse, their long history of corruption and current crisis. Next, we tie this into the US banking crisis that started with FTX, to Silvergate, then Signature, with Silicon Valley Bank also failing along the way. Lastly, we discuss February's CPI and PPI out of the US to see if that can be added to an analysis of the global financial situation giving us a more clear picture of what is happening. Throughout the entire episode, I try to build a narrative that what we are seeing in the bank failures, bailouts, and CPI/PPI crashing is a deflationary story. This is a tale of credit tightness and collapse, bailouts notwithstanding. In this context, bailouts only confirm the dire state of the private financial system and lead to deeper tightness and stagnation. This episode goes perfectly in the entire multi-year theme of Fed Watch. While bitcoin is a hedge against inflation, we don't find ourselves in an inflationary scenario. What we are living through today is the end of a multi-decade inflationary credit bubble, and what do all bubbles eventually do? They bust. That will look like a monetary shortage, not a monetary abundance. In these credit bust situations, money without counterparty risk is a great advantage. I'm alluding to bitcoin here, as it is both a hedge against inflation and credit deflation. The great thing for bitcoin, as well, is it has a long way to go in its monetization, meaning its dollar value will expand greatly as it absorbs monetary functions. As people are looking for a monetary alternative during periods of monetary shortage, it is an absolute advantage if that alternative asset is nascent and its value can expand dramatically as it is adopted. For instance, people that adopt gold in this role only expect perhaps a 5x upside, where bitcoin could see 100x. Thanks for joining us. If you are reading this, hit the like and subscribe button! Former Rep. Barney Frank - These bank failures are complicated. by John Catsimatidis
Join Jim and Greg as they welcome the House GOP effort to reinvigorate the American energy sector. But they know getting it into law is going to be very difficult. They also react to the Politico report alleging Marianne Williamson is a terror as a boss and routinely flew off the handle and berated staff during her 2020 campaign. Does this matter much in a Democratic primary that's expected to be a blowout? And did this story arise organically or the Biden team decide to nuke Williamson before she even gets started? Finally, Jim explains how former Rep. Barney Frank would be the villain of the recent bank collapse scandal if he were a Republican. It looks like the Libertarians of Silicon Valley suddenly love government when they need the government to bail them out. Socialism for the mega-rich, taxes and fascism for the rest of us. In this week's episode, we delve into the fantasy hellscape of Peter Thiel, his investments in surveillance tech and A.I. that would give aspiring autocrats like him unstoppable power; Dictator Xi of China as a warning of what could happen to the United States if the Silicon Valley Libertarian Fascist Brigade usher in Big Brother 2.0, why Democrats aren't doing more to stop them (because some are cashing in!). Thiel's allegedly instigated banking collapse comes at an opportune time. Rattling the economy when the 2024 presidential elections are around the corner will drive economic anxiety and uncertainty at a time when Democrats need to defend the White House. This will pave the way for a wannabe fascist dictator like Ron DeSantis, the Viktor Orban of Florida, who is using the kind of anti-gay laws Putin used to consolidate power in Russia. DeSantis just gave an interview to Walter Duranty of Fox News, telling Tucker Carlson that supporting Ukraine in the face of an existential genocide from a modern day Hitler is not in the U.S. interests, which means he's secured Russia's help in the upcoming election. In our bonus episode, we answer questions from our listeners at the Democracy Defender level and higher. This week's discussion includes why we should keep an eye on Russia's threat of invading Moldova (again!) to open up a new front to seize Ukraine; how to hold onto hope and push back against corruption; and how to organize one's life to be creative and productive despite the hellscape we find ourselves in, and a fun story about a recent run-in with Hillary Clinton, possible Gaslit Nation listener? On Sunday, as government authorities announced that Silicon Valley Bank depositors would be protected, they added that the New York Department of Financial Services would be shuttering Signature Bank. Little explanation was given but some, including Signature board member and bank regulation architect Barney Frank, think it was a calculated move to send an anti-crypto message. HAVE YOU SUBSCRIBED TO "Before the Bell?" https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFmyKJKseEMQp1d14AjvMUw (3/14/23) It's Day-Two of Bank Bailout Week, with still-inflationary CPI numbers adding to the mix of woes and worries for the Federal Reserve. The failure of Signature Bank and SVB underscore what happens when regulations are defanged, and Rule 157 is repealed, allowing fuzzy math to prevail. Are banks really too big to fail? The irony of the co-author of the emasculated Dodd-Frank legislation, Barney Frank, sitting on the board of defunct Signature Bank; the differences between Big Banks and Regional Banks. Don't Panic; a look at regional banks' comparative lack of flexibility in troubled times. The new immediacy of deposit withdrawals; The Fed now risks credibility, caught between battling inflation and bailing out banks. Markets have priced-in a massive Fed pivot; why SVB is likely not a one-off event, as previous rate hikes being to impact economy; banks will make loan requirements more stringent, effectively tightening credit; banks will be forced to clean up their balance sheets. The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 1: Following the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, the Treasury Department, the Federal Reserve, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation announced they will guarantee all customer deposits—even those exceeding the FDIC's standard $250,000 per depositor guarantee. According to The Wall Street Journal, “[a] senior Treasury official said the steps didn't constitute a bailout because stock and bondholders in SVB and Signature wouldn't be protected.” Silicon Valley Bank had been the 16th largest bank in America with an estimated $175 billion in deposits, but after losing billions investing in long-term assets customers attempted to withdraw an estimated $42 billion in deposits resulting in the bank's ultimate collapse. Read more about SVB's collapse here: https://www.wsj.com/articles/federal-reserve-rolls-out-emergency-measures-to-prevent-banking-crisis-ba4d7f98 Reason's Elizabeth Nolan Brown critiques the U.S. government's decision to guarantee all deposits with no limit—writing, “[f]or one thing, banks are themselves taxpayers. And in situations like this, the many institutions who act responsibly must bear the burden of bank fees in order to inoculate less responsible actors. Besides, these fees assessed on banks don't exist in a vacuum that only burdens big businesses; banks pass on the costs of regulatory compliance to customers in a number of ways. So, the idea that the government's bailout funds come from some sort of magical pool of consequence-free money is silly.” You can read Brown's editorial here: https://reason.com/2023/03/13/everyone-is-learning-the-wrong-lessons-from-the-silicon-valley-bank-collapse/ Who is to blame for the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank? On Monday, President Joe Biden blamed the Trump Administration for “rolling back” the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, a federal law designed to regulate the nation's financial services industry. However, The New York Post notes that Barney Frank—the former Congressman for whom the bill is named—was a member of the Board of Directors at Signature Bank when it collapsed over the weekend.

4:00pm- While appearing on Fox News with Maria Bartiromo, Congressman James Comer (R-KY) suggested that Silicon Valley Bank's “quest for ESG [Environment, Social, and Governance] policies” may have played a role in its collapse. 4:10pm- On Monday, President Joe Biden called the U.S. banking system “safe” and credited his administration's decisions—specifically guaranteeing all deposits at Silicon Valley Bank—for avoiding the contagion-like collapse of multiple banks. But didn't the Federal Reserve ultimately decide to bailout depositors? 4:30pm- During her acceptance speech at Sunday's 95th Annual Academy Awards, Best Actress in a Leading Role Michelle Yeoh took a shot at CNN's Don Lemon for his comments about women of a certain age being “past their prime.” 4:45pm- Dr. EJ Antoni—Research Fellow for Regional Economics in the Center for Data Analysis at The Heritage Foundation—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to explain the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank. Dr. Antoni debunks the Biden Administration's narrative that the Treasury Department, the Federal Reserve, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation are not bailing out depositors with taxpayer dollars. Will the decision to bailout SVB's “gross fiscal mismanagement” encourage other banks to take on risky investments, operating under the assumption that if things go wrong the federal government will step in and save the day? 5:00pm- The Drive at 5: Dave McCormick—Veteran and former Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss his new book, “Superpower in Peril: A Battle Plan to Renew America.” How do we decouple from China and assure American hegemony? And with over 500 homicides in Philadelphia in 2022, isn't the city inherently scary? Read more about Victor Fiorillo's editorial here:https://www.phillymag.com/news/2023/03/10/steve-keeley-fox-29/ 6:05pm- Andy Bloom—President of Andy Bloom Communications—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss his latest editorial at Broad + Liberty, “Biden Plays the Blame Game.” Bloom documents the Biden Administration's instance to fault Donald Trump for everything that goes wrong. Bloom writes, “Biden has consistently blamed Trump for Covid deaths…Although largely ignored now, the Afghanistan withdrawal is one of Biden's biggest and deadliest disasters. At the time, Biden explained it was Trump's fault for making a deal with the Taliban. For some reason, THIS was the one Trump policy Biden was bound to and couldn't change. Although the last troops withdrew after the negotiated date, Biden still blamed Trump…When the Biden administration had to acknowledge that a Chinese spy balloon had penetrated U.S. airspace, they were quick to add that three prior incidents happened when Trump was president.” You can read Bloom's article here: https://broadandliberty.com/2023/03/09/andy-bloom-biden-plays-the-blame-game/ 6:30pm- While appearing on Fox News with Larry Kudlow, former Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers Kevin Hassett revealed that buyers were willing to “step in” and purchase Silicon Valley Bank. 6:35pm- While speaking with Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) on ABC''s This Week, host Martha Raddatz baselessly claimed the Trump Administration was responsible for the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. 6:45pm- Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, and MSNBC Commentator Jen Psaki have all publicly considered the idea of censoring Fox News.

Dennis is joined via Zoom by cartoonist Eric Orner, who is best known for The Mostly Unfabulous Life of Ethan Green, to talk about his new graphic novel Smahtguy: The Life and Times of Barney Frank. Eric talks about meeting Congressman Frank when he was in his 20's, going to work for him in his congressional office and describes why, decades later, he wanted to turn Barney's life into a graphic novel.
